I wanted to update to note 3 after I put in order for note air, unfortunately when I contacted the customer service they told me it was already shipped. But when I received the note air I have no regret at all. I love it more and more now I’ve used it for over a week now! Keeper!

Exellent review, Voja! You are absolutely the best. I have the Note Air and am very satisfied with it. I don’t plan on “upgrading” to Note 3. However, based on your review, if I was deciding to purchase one of these devices for the first time, I would go with the Note 3. Three reasons: 1. Slightly lighter weight; 2. Slightly faster performance; 3. Much longer battery life.
There is a fourth reason that is never mentioned because it usually isn’t germane to a technical review of these products. We all know and Voja has mentioned it often that while Onyx Boox devices are generally top performers in their field, they usually come with cheap pens and cheap covers. If you want to get a third party generic case/cover, the Note 3 form factor is much easier to fit than the Note Air.

    • @sinbob
      @sinbob 4 роки тому +5

I have that issue now. I will receive the Note 3 tomorrow and I am thinking about exchanging it for the Air. I will still mostly use it for reading so the slightly better light and contrast/crispness are more important for me than slightly better writing feel.
      Also it's USD100$ cheaper.
But lighter, longer battery and the easier way to protect it with various covers/bags is important too!
Design and build quality so the feel of a good investment is a pro too.
I think that mine laziness will win here and I will stay with what I get tomorrow than bother with shipping back and waiting again :P

Thanks for your great and in-depth reviews! I am a big fan of them and used them to buy two of my devices: Poke 2 and RM2!
However, I do have two comments:
    1. By watching your reviews I found that you are a big fan of Neo reader, while I do think there is room to improve especially in the reading statistics and the reading status bar on the bottom of each page. In Neo, you will only number of pages or percentages left in the book, while for example in moon+ you do have the options of adding the remaining time and pages in the chapter and in the book.
    2. I received my RM2 just recently, but by watching your review on note-air and note 3, I am now thinking of changing note -air instead of RM2. Since I do have the Poke 2 for my book readings, I thought using the same environment for note-taking and academic article reading on Note-air will be more convenient. My only concern is the great writing experience and the sleek and elegant design of RM2 which I probably don't get on Note-air, I suppose? What is your say?
My usage will be mostly be note-taking (meetings, academic articles, and my thoughts) and reading books and articles. I do not intend to sketch or draw on my device.

Thanks as always for the incredibly deep and insightful advice presented here. I'm attempting to make up my mind between the Air and the Note 3, and am probably tending slightly toward the better ergonomics (Air) over the faster transfer speeds (Note 3). The only other factor I could think of that makes an actual perceived difference to me personally is the durability of the two devices / screens - do you have any insight here? Obviously I'd take all care I could, but in a household with children there are always hazards :-). I've read conflicting takes on Moebius vs Carta in terms of durability, and I suppose the thinness of the Air might make a difference as well?

To my understanding the carta HD has a glass part in the e-ink itself thats why its covered by a stronger glass

Performance testing Neo Reader was very interesting. As you have demonstrated and I have scrutinized via low video speed, Note3 is noticeably faster than Air when it comes to dealing with pages with more to compute like pictures but they are really on par when it comes to less demanding pages. What I look for is the best speed in underlining & adding an annotation and exporting files. I think Note3 has the same hardware as Lumi. I have seen Lumi is really snappy with regards to this. I liked that a lot. But even with Lumi I chose A2 mode because less image quality bothers me less than lack of speed. If I do a lot of underlining and adding annotation repeatedly, it is important to me that it functions almost instantly comparable to iPad because of the sheer number I repeat this. So I think the processes I talk about might be faster on the Note 3 than on Air but I have come to the conclusion that it is barely noticeable. Note Air will provide very good speed in A2 mode for underlining and adding annotation, exporting files might be noticeably slower than Note3 but not a great deal and this is also a task that you do less often compared to the others mentioned. Thank you for that demonstration!

    I have two questions:
    1) Now that Onyx have updated the software on the Note 2, do you think it's worth spending the extra $70 on the Note 3, for what seems like just Android 10?

ARM chip with hardware floating point support can still use software floating point implementation, which may account for the difference in performance. Despite the hardware being the same (if it is). Thank you for an informative video. Maybe hardware float is disabled via power saving settings? If you havent tried already, try to disable all power saving and run tests again.

Note 3 doesn't slide as much or almost at all, as the back surface has a lot more friction on it's own. As for pens, yes, the screen surfaces are extremely similar, so the same applies to the Note 3 as well. reMarkable pen was simply an example i had at hand while testing. If you are referring to my original review of the Note 2, then you need to keep in mind that it's over a year old, and that even Note 2 was upgraded and made a much better platform from OS v2.3.1 and onwards.
That being said, Note 3 runs better hardware and newer OS the underneath it all, something that Note 2 won't be able to do due to hardware product incompatibility, so Note 3 is a better choice of the two, if you want to have the device for a longer period of time.

Here in part two where you have done the benchmarks, you say that they have the exact same versions.
