  • Have you ever wanted to do Rubber Guard in BJJ but feel like you don't process the flexibility for it?
    Yeah, me too!
But in this video today. My buddy and 10th Planet Black Belt Brandon Mccaghren is going to hook you up with some solid details on how to use Rubber Guard even if you're not flexible.
This video came about because we had a lot of requests for Rubber Guard when I told everyone that I was having a 10th Planet Black Belt in for training.
When he and I spoke with each other I told him how I couldn't use Rubber Guard because my legs are just too tight.
He shook his head and said, "let me show you."
After he showed me the details I told him we had to do a video on this. Because I'm sure there are people in Brazilian Jiujitsu who'd love to do Rubber Guard but feel like they can't.
In this video Brandon will lay down some seriously simple details on how to use the Rubber Guard even if you're not flexible.
Give them a try and add them to your BJJ training.
You can find more about Brandon here:

Hope you guys enjoyed the video!
I'll talk to you next time.

Yeah, we had a tenth planet guy roll through and teach this exact sequence. A white belt that was there ate it up and almost caught me with a triangle. I was pretty impressed he worked the sequence over and over for a month and got pretty damn good at it and in his last comp, subbed all three opponents with that same move. Pretty sick.

I've been doing bjj for a year and when I'm not in the gym, all I think about outside of work is going back to the gym. I'm a 2nd Dan in tkd and that only took 3.5 years or so and the rate of skill acquisition is much slower in bjj and I love the challenge of it all. I'm an addict.

I always try to achieve that sideways angle in my closed guard, whether I'm playing rubber guard or just setting up triangles and omoplatas. But I was wondering if you have any tricks to keep that angle against someone who is wise to that and works like the devil to keep flattening you out every time you scoot your hip out. Are they open to a surprise sweep the other way? Is there some sort of frame or grip that can help me stay on my side?

One of the biggest issues I have is when someone is in my rubber guard and they get their arm closest to my foot out, they lift their head, while pulling on my foot, creating like a weird toe hold. It's not surprising because we come from Gokor and his Hayastan school, but it's rough. Is there anything I can do better to prevent this?

Not a professional but in my experience these are the correct principles. Just start with a flat spine and reach for your toes not bending the back, bending only at the hips and slightly at the knees every half hour to fifteen minutes, every day for 15- 30 seconds or more.go just to where you feel a slight stretch. Once you can easily touch your toes you’ll understand it’s just repetition. If anything hurts or feels like a strain don’t do it. You can’t do it in long intense sessions because you’re body will respond by tightening, you actually have multiple mechanisms in your body that react like an immune system against muscular/tendon overstretch/overstrain. Your looking for acclimation not direct increase. Only light stimulation over time will relax the body. Shocking it will result in stiffness or injury.

Eh, without flexibility Rubber Guard players tend to suck, cus they're just too easy to break. Those with flexibility and height are alot better and you can absolutely feel it, simply put. That's just science for u, to put it in perspective, a bigger opponent will be better than someone smaller at pinning or mounting positions. So if you wanna do Rubber Guard, by all means, but the more flexibility you have, the better off ur gonna be. Getting to your side only gets you the positioning, but then that's just an extra step u gotta take and it's still not going to be as strong as someone who has the flexibility to hold onto it comfortably. If you really wanna challenge what I said about the science thing, it should make sense to you automatically, but you can ask any physics professor to explain why someone taller and more flexible will always be better at doing rubber guard.
