  • This video shows the latest creation of Kai Magazine, showing the game intro of the Sega Mega CD game "Illusion city" in a basic msx2 with 64k of ram. The graphics have been ripped from the Mega CD game, carefully converted from 64 colors to 16 colors, and strategically mounted to fit in a standard video ram msx2 with only 64k of ram and 128 vram. The musics are from the Turbo-R game, and the programming has been completely made from scratch in Turbo Basic (Kai Magazine brand). Up to today's date it has never done anything like it in MSX. Most of the demo looks like the Mega CD (16-bit console with cd rom) despite the MSX is 8 bits, and lacks many of the hardware effects of the mega cd console, which have been emulated, with understandable drops in frames per second (or softness) in just a few scenes.

Wonder the graphic quality of MSX2 games were lack of programming techniques that are available today - if someone developed libraries, it would have been great (or V9990 was included with MSX2+ TurboR)

this is my exact sentiment. I have had quite a few debates with individuals about the famicom vs the msx and the msx was a vastly superior machine in a lot of facets it just didn't have the same developer backing behind it like nintendo drew in for the famicom. in an alternate reality we all grew up on msx computers and everything else was an after thought.

this game's creator had predicted china's future what is to be
today's hon-kong city come true part of this game's technology
if this remake illusion city ps4 or latest platform
    that would be attractive contents
today's peeple would be immersed game's and feel realistic stoy rather than at that time people

One amazing proof that a bunch of 16 bit graphics can be converted (and be executed on a MSX2) without lossing quality :)

How many colors can a typical MSX2 game display at once?

The vast majority of games shows 16 colors at the same time (as this demo does).
Anyway I just finished a new game for msx2 which uses a screen mode which shows 256 colors simultaneously.
Check my channel and look for a video called "Rune Monster on MSX turbo-R with opl4/moonsound sound". There are very few msx2 games showing 256 colors, but it looks very nice.

The crazy thing about this is that its only the stock MSX2 with 64 K ram, there were models with 128 K 256 K and even 512 K ram! litterally 4X the ram of the SNES, you could render 3D graphics as complex as the playstation 1 with that kind of beef.

RAM don't matter if you don't have a capable processing unit. Considering the MSX architecture you could stuff even one gigabit VRAM/RAM and not get even close to a 32x-level 3d graphics.

You could, however, whack another processor in there if you're clever, but authenticity of that is questionable :)

It's all down to the architecture limitations. Even though the MSX does have a very flexible hardware there are somethings that it is unable to do. 3D is one of them.

    Is it available?

This demo ROM is free. The rom is 2048Kb big so you need a mass storage cartridge with at least a 2048kb flash capability and konami5 mapper.

So you ported the port of a TurboR game to MSX2? Well, why not^^
I doubt I'll get one anyway someday. Also 64k RAM only, that's awesome :D

Sorry, we only made the intro demo from the Sega Mega CD version for msx2.
We are not planning on porting the game to msx2 :(
Anyway this shows what can be done with a basic msx2 nowadays ;)
