Ha Ha! Thank you so much, so pleased you were able to join in and measure yourself. Poor Becky and her stare - it is a joke in our friendship group now :-))
What am I doing wrong?? Bought a measuring tape at Joanns, my waist measurement says that I'm a 36, but my perfect pair of jeans Levis/Madewell are 28... what's wrong why is the size soooo off, I've tried wearing the size my waist says but those jeans are super large on me.
This is such a good question and it's for a number of reasons. Firstly vanity sizing, garment sizing is not very accurate these days, companies want us to buy their products so that they make us feel good by making garments larger and keeping the size the same! I also wonder how this differs from European sizing to USA sizing for example a US 8 is a UK 12, I don't know whether this happens in denim sizing too? I actually have a funny story about a customer who came to an in-person class with me. Made a skirt and then called me complaining; she said that I took her measurements wrong because she always buys X size in the shop and her 'real measurements' were bigger than this! I offered for her to come back and I would re-measure her, she was seriously shocked that the measurements I took were accurate, her words "I didn't realise I had put on weight, I have always worn the same size!' Vanity sizing is a big issue and you will find this changes from brand to brand; one store you might be a 26, another a 28 and another one a 30! It will also depend on the cut of the jeans, if the jeans sit lower than you waist then it might be that you need to buy this smaller size for the jeans to fit your hips (high hip and low hip). You may simply have a straighter figure through the waist, than what the 'fit model' they designed the jeans for has. Does that make sense? Another aspect is the stretch of jeans. Obviously different denim has a different proportion of stretch and again you will find this differs between cut (style) and brand. Sorry this turned into an essay, but I hope it helped? Basically you aren't doing anything wrong! Aneka x
@@MadetoSew Thank you, this was very helpful and educational, made perfect sense. I will start to look for clothes in the measurements I took... we will see if I truly can find a brand that is true to my size.

Hi Nikki, it should be the very end of the tape measure where the metal part begins. As from the end of the metal part to 1cm should be from 0cm to 1cm. Does that make sense? Aneka
PLEASE 🙏 PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND!!!! Im very confused about the waistline. What if ur fat with a big round belly. Do u measure the biggest part of ur stomach? Or still do waist line? Also u confused me because u said make sure the tape measure is straight. But u also said put it above the belly button. If i put above belly button, id have to lower the front a little. Also is measuring different for fat people? Because sometimes our fat makes us uneven in normal places. And the waist is definitely smaller but we need to be able to get our clothes OVER THE FAT PARTS FIRST before getting to the smaller waist etc. So for us should we waist measure where the stomach tire 🛞 begins, like slightly beneath that smaller waist size? Or do we still measure the small part and hope that high waisted bottom can get over that bulge first???
Happy to help. 1. Depending on your shape you can measure the true waist. This would be where you bend at the side. OR you can measure where the waist looks better on the individual you are measuring. They may want it higher if they have a larger stomach. When drafting on an individual with a larger stomach I might measure both the true waist and the flattering waist. 2. Larger individuals (fuller figures, plus sizes) can have a slanted waist. Lower at the front and higher at the back. That’s ok. 3. Belly button is very much a standard mark. I would aim for the bend at the side seam. This works better on individuals with a stomach. 4. In terms of fitting clothes over the fuller abdomen. It depends what you are making. Usually I would measure the true waist, High Hip and Low Hip. If the abdomen was larger than the Low Hip I would use this figure for drafting the Low Hip. So that the garment doesn’t come in again lower down and accentuate the fuller abdomen. I would record both true waist and fuller abdomen so that you can mark them on the pattern and achieve a good and flattering fit. I hope that helps?

Usually although the jeans are cut for the waist they will still use the waist measurement as the sizing. If you look at finished garment measurements of the jeans (some retailers will tell you this). You’ll see that a 26” waist pair of jeans might be 30” around the waistband if it is designed to sit lower.
Pls is the waist measurement for a blouse the same with a skirt waist, because some people the tiniest part of their body is far smaller than the place they keep their skirt
Hi Amara, YES you would measure the waist for a blouse and a skirt in the same place - this is the smallest part of the body. Or where you bend - I show more details in this updated video: ua-cam.com/video/oOQMeXW8ewc/v-deo.html If someone wears a skirt in a different place to their waist that is fine; but the measurement starts with the waist. Hope this helps? Aneka

@@amaraezionye6739 When you measure your smallest part are you measuring your waist? Or are you measuring too high up? In the other video I sent you you will see that I ask the person I am measure to move from side to side at the waist to find the waist point. Is your smallest part where you bend from side to side - if so this is the waist and you are wearing your skirt lower than your waist. Does that help?

Thank you. Yes, everyone does this differently. I have always worked with exact body measurements and then I add the ease I want depending on the pattern and person and fabric. Hope that helps?

Hi, thank you for the video. I have a Q about measuring bust-size etc for a pre-made coat. If the coat is a size 32" bust, has that taken into account that the wearer will probably have layers of clothing on underneath? I'm not sure if, when measured in just a bra and tight-fitting shirt at 32", if I should ADD an inch or 2 to allow for wearing thicker layers underneath the coat.
If the coat you are buying is suitable for a 32" bust they will have include the ease (difference between body measurement and garment size) into this figure; as well as the idea that you will be wearing other layers under the coat. Aneka
@@MadetoSew didn’t think you’d actually reply but when I went online it said it can’t calculate it what body type I am and I was hoping you knew by looking at this
@@Bunnizpuff by looking at your measurements I am guessing that you have a rectangle shaped figure?! I might be wrong but your measurements don’t have a big difference between Waist and Low Hip. I presume that 50” is your Waist and 53” is your low hip? When I draft my patterns I usually draft for a 10” difference between waist and low hip. But lots of people have less difference these days. Is that what you were looking for? In terms of shape? I would suggest rectangle or straighter body?
Pleasure Alisha, sorry I didn't cover the shoulder in the tutorial. For an accurate shoulder measurement you will want to measure from where the neck meets the shoulder (where you would wear a necklace). To the end of the shoulder. This isn't the end of the shoulder but if you follow your collar bone out to the shoulder there is a bone at the end, this should be in line with your armpit. That is where you measure the end of the shoulder. Does that make sense? Aneka :-))

I offered for her to come back and I would re-measure her, she was seriously shocked that the measurements I took were accurate, her words "I didn't realise I had put on weight, I have always worn the same size!'
Vanity sizing is a big issue and you will find this changes from brand to brand; one store you might be a 26, another a 28 and another one a 30!
Aneka x

1. Depending on your shape you can measure the true waist. This would be where you bend at the side. OR you can measure where the waist looks better on the individual you are measuring. They may want it higher if they have a larger stomach.
When drafting on an individual with a larger stomach I might measure both the true waist and the flattering waist.

Usually although the jeans are cut for the waist they will still use the waist measurement as the sizing.
I love your videos. Thank you so much for this!!
So pleased I could help. :))
wow great video
Thanks becky for being a great model 👏🏻
strange though that my instructor actually pressed that for the hip measurement you have to leave around four fingers space to accommodate for sitting differences 🤔
Thank you.
Yes, everyone does this differently. I have always worked with exact body measurements and then I add the ease I want depending on the pattern and person and fabric. Hope that helps?
I have hips dips and idk how to measure my hips. The widest hip part is on my torsal and not bum. Does hips measurement need to include bum?
Hello, do you mean that your widest part is higher than your bottom? I would measure around the fullest part of your bottom first. Once you have done this is the high hip (halfway between waist and hip), the largest part? Aneka
But if i have big butt can i count on my hip size? I have hip dips...plz answer
Thanks! Just what I needed. 😊
Brilliant, as usual! Thank you 🙂
Thank you Jo. Aneka :-))

How to download PDF for Capen shift dress
Hi Ola, I am so sorry for the issue. We have changed the website and the link seems to be different. Where is the link you were trying? Here is the correct link: madetosew.com/product/copen-top-dress/ Aneka xx
Do we divide our body measurents by 2 and and 4? I see a lot of people doing this.
Hi Nana, what are you wanting to do with your body measurements? You will need to divide them if you are drafting a pattern from scratch.
Yes, but by what number do we divide them by if we are making pattern from scratch? Thank you for also responding
@@kaskaskapen1877 If I am drafting a pattern from scratch, if it is a measurement like the Bust, Waist, Hips by 4.
@@MadetoSew this is the answer i have been loking for months. Thank you so much. God bless you
@@kaskaskapen1877 So pleased I could help.
what number on the measuring tape fo you start from?
0 always!
Measure in inches, millimeters or centimeters?
I would do either inches or centimetres. You don’t need to be as precise as millimetres.
Hi Anneka, I love that draped top you are wearing - is the pattern available on your website please? I couldn't find it on there! Thanks for the great tutorials.
Hi Rosie, it is called Aria and is a pattern I will be launching soon. Stay tuned. Thank you so much. Aneka x
This is really helpful. Thank you
Thank you.
Hey I wanted to make a shoulder princess seam dress. I have no idea how to make a pattern, it's not available in our country. What videos do I need for them?
I have this video that shows you how to draft Princess seams on an existing pattern: ua-cam.com/video/ZEXaRc6mlgI/v-deo.html I hope it might help? I don’t have a video on making a pattern at the moment but I do have a free pattern you could use: madetosew.com/product/copen-top-dress/
So big hips measurements are equal to big booty? or not necessarilly
Not necessarily. It could be fuller thighs. Or even just a wider hip bone structure, but actually a flat derrière. Hope that helps.
Did you make the blouse you have on? if you did i'd like to know how you made it.
Hello, yes I did make the blouse and I will be launching a pattern for it and a dress very soon. I hope you like it. Aneka x

Hello there. I want to learn sewing from the scrap. And I'm sooo happy that I've found your UA-cam channel. But could you please tell which playlist of your channel should I start from? And also the order in which I should follow your playlists? Thank you.. have great days sewing..🌼💕🌸
So pleased I could help. I would start with one of the sewing for beginners playlists, I have 2: ua-cam.com/play/PLfxTlKMr7TsDHyZv7_dKMEzbNiuGV8Ilu.html & ua-cam.com/play/PLfxTlKMr7TsBay4qFSxMgxLxJDyv38J6v.html and maybe some easy things to make to start: ua-cam.com/play/PLfxTlKMr7TsBlg85pR63JuakGUTZQW5-D.html hope this helps? Aneka x
Oh thank you so much I'll start from those that you mentioned. All your video tutorials are so neat, clean, detailed and very interesting. Thank you so much for sharing them with everyone...💕have great days sewing...
Thank you. Pleased I could help. x
Aneka

Is taking measurements for gown the same??
Yes, you might find this video useful too. I do more measurements: ua-cam.com/video/oOQMeXW8ewc/v-deo.html

Of course, I will do another video for further measurements. Aneka x
Hi There, do you mind if I link your video on my website to show my clients how to measure themselves?
Hi Rose, of course you can link the video on your website. Thank you for thinking that my video is good enough. Very kind of you. Aneka x
omg this helps so much love the chapters, well done!
Glad you think so!
I don’t understand I tried calculating cause it came out to be 43,43,50,53
That’s ok. What don’t you understand about the measurements?
Thank you for this tutorial..been searching for this. By the way, how do I measure my own shoulder?
Pleasure Alisha, sorry I didn't cover the shoulder in the tutorial. For an accurate shoulder measurement you will want to measure from where the neck meets the shoulder (where you would wear a necklace). To the end of the shoulder. This isn't the end of the shoulder but if you follow your collar bone out to the shoulder there is a bone at the end, this should be in line with your armpit. That is where you measure the end of the shoulder. Does that make sense? Aneka :-))
Made to Sew Thank you for the clear explanation.
Happy to help, Aneka
LMAO I came to the comments for tips and all the comments are about Becky 😭
