    Thank you Aneka! I keep coming back to this video for reference. This time I took note of approximate time stamps so I can easily skip through to the body part I'm trying to measure. Hope this helps others:

    For someone who needs to know how to measure themselves so they can plot measurements down as the follow pattern book on "how to create top and bottom bodice blocks" ...THANK YOU for this very detailed HTM yourself video. You're the only one (out of many) on youtube that gives Guidelines to look for (shoulder seam starting behind ear...brillant), tips and tricks for measuring, etc. I will be rewatching this video a lot to make sure I have all the correct measurements needed to create personal blocks. Again, thank you!

      Agreed, Melendy! I’m back today to do it more properly, and I’ve even got a marker in hand so I can draw the lines on myself, then measure from the markings. I look quite ridiculous but having nice slopers will make it all worth it. ❤️🤭

Perhaps in future you would do a measurement on some models with different body shapes, e.g. those with tummies and share with us some tips on how to draft a pattern so that the shape of the tummy can be less noticeable once the garment is put on.

    Hi, I love how clearly you explain the measuring and all the tips to get it right. I just found your channel and I am learning so much! I am pretty much just a 'self taught' sewer (high school sewing in yr 7&8 then following commercial patterns) but I often adjust and adapt what I'm doing with patterns in a rather amateur way, I am discovering!! I've taken these measurements. I measured again four hours later, and the measurements varied by 1/2 inch, and another area by 1 full inch. Also, measuring myself with no assistance, I found it very helpful to tape one end of the measuring tape to myself. Also, I marked my tape with disappearing seamstress ink (pen).

    I see that by using this method every time my standard sizes for garments can fit closer to exact and be predictable by measuring on the mannequins used as my guide, as I never see the user of my garments as I make for charity. Also, in America there is much discrimination against men sewing or God forbid taking measurements on a woman, so mannequins are my way to fit in a general way and still get the job done. There are many places like boys and girls homes that need clothing help as well as hospitals and emergency flood and earthquake victims that need clothes sent to them as they have nothing left, especially after a house fire, garments are gone. Gloves in the wintertime are always needed by the homeless too. Good luck in your new place Anika.

    Thank you Aneka I have always wanted to learn to sew but never found the right teacher. You are a fantastic teacher and I am researching which sewing machine to buy. I have one question about measurements. I am small boned and most garments I buy are too big from my arm pit to the top of my shoulder. They are made for women with longer shoulders. How do I measure the shoulder length so that I don’t have to always have my shoulders altered by lifting the fabric up? Thank you from Angela

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  4 роки тому

      Hi Angela, I am really pleased you like my teaching. I presume you mean that the armhole is too long for you? Or are your shoulders slightly more sloped than average? There are two things you could do. The first one is you could measure your side? From your waist up to the base of your armhole (to do this I usually place a ruler under the armpit at a right angle and measure from the waist to the ruler). You could put this on the pattern, measure up from the waist to the base of the armhole. You will want to have a bit of ease from the base of your armhole to the garment. at least 3/4" (2cm). It is a little hard to measure the armpit to the top of the shoulder; the depth of the armhole. You can measure the circumference with a tape measure? Another tool is to measure your shoulder slope, have a ruler at a right angle from your neck, across the shoulder and then measure from the ruler to the shoulder (height / depth), at the end of the shoulder. This will show you how much the shoulder lowers from the neck, the slope of the shoulder? I hope some of these measurements will help? Aneka x

    I love your videos you are so clear in your instructions! Can I make a suggestion (request)? Could you do a video using someone with scoliosis to help us make clothes and alterations to patterns i.e. measuring and drawing alterations. Tips about what to avoid and good ideas to get over obstacles- Please!

      Thank you for your kind words. I have had customers with scoliosis for 1:1 pattern drafting courses, I hadn't thought about doing it as a tutorial, I will give it some thought and see if I can create something helpful.

    Can you please show a detailed how to draft a fitted bodice sloper front and back, using inches. I don’t use metric. Using your body measurements. Thanks

      Hi there, I am planning on doing this on my website. I already have a Skirt Block on there (I draft in both metric and imperial always). But I would add it to my website rather than UA-cam so that I can give people support, they send in photos, I help with fitting etc. Thank you, Aneka x

    Thank you, very useful video. Please can you tell me if the shoulder measurement " not at the end" is valid also for men?

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  Рік тому

      Yes, the same. The shoulder is where the arm is joined onto the body, you can also raise your arm and you will get a dimple.

    Thanks for this insightful tutorial. Now I know why my garments tend to come out too baggy. I add too much ease while measuring as we as when I am drafting the pattern. Question. In measuring the front waist from between the collar bone and not from the center of the shoulder going over how does this affect the fit?

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Phyllis, glad that the video helped you. It depends whether you are drafting from scratch or amending a pattern. I personally prefer the CF collar bone to waist measurement because I think it can be easier for people to accurately measure. Often the shoulder to waist can be tricky because people don't know where to start measuring on the shoulder, where should the shoulder seam be? How far forward or back. Unless you have a mannequin with the shoulder line drawn on this can be hard to achieve. Hope this helps? Aneka

    • @phyllisgordon6577
      @phyllisgordon6577 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks again for the clarification. I often try to draft my own patterns and get varying results. I am certainly going to take the measurements using your standards and try to make the necessary adjustments. I am positive the results will be better. Thanks for your help. Hope you have adjusted to Australia.
