Advanced modding tips (I think this would make a good followup video): - You can potentially find more mods to use if you add earlier versions of the game to CKAN's compatible versions checklist (its under settings). Generally, I find anything from 1.8.0 onwards still works fine in 1.12.x, unless the mod itself had a bug in 1.8.x. - Some modders don't let their mods get indexed by CKAN. Checking out the forums and Spacedock is a good way to find these mods. I generally prefer the forums, since the info most modders provide on Spacedock is minimal, and there's little to no feedback there. Meanwhile, the forums are a great place to get more info, and more importantly, ask questions and report bugs. - Some (one, really, but they put out some mods that are really good, including some you've used, Vaos, i.e., simple construction) modders prefer Curseforge. Curseforge often has a lot of the same mods you can find on other places. It is slightly better for discoverability compared to Spacedock or the forums (still not as good as CKAN, which is the gold standard), but has dogshit filters (Spacedock has none, and the forums are just not able to have that feature very effectively). One important note is that Curseforge has an app that on the surface, sounds very similar to CKAN, and could even work for other popular games. But DO NOT USE IT. It is borderline malware (I don't think it actually is, but it is so bad you could be forgiven for thinking it is malicious). There are likely compatibility problems with CKAN, and if you try to uninstall it, there will be garbage left behind. You are better off manually installing anything from the Curseforge app.
The most frustrating part is modders who block CKAN. There are even several mods I used to regularly install through it that have since been removed. It was so convenient, and now is less so. It makes me sad.
Thank you so much!!! Every time I try to find out how to use mods in ksp, I am just told "use ckan" with no explanation. Thank you for taking the time to finally explain this to me.
I am impressed with the TURD capabilites. You can make a brand new looking jet or an old used craft such as a traning ssto that has been used for a very long time, and other crafts as well. I am impressed on how this opens up just that additional detail that really brings a craft to life. As I am stuck with a console I know too well the pain of not having mods. Anyways thank you for the informative video that at some point I can hopefully use as well. Can you please still do an individual video for the two crafts you have breafly shown.
CKAN does give you that same control. It'll offer you optional configs if avaliable, and if not, you can still do manual configs (like in Snacks, there's Air and Stress configs that you have to do manually), but they won't break CKAN or your game. Honestly, I started out doing manual installations, and then learned just how powerful CKAN is, and I never looked back. I only manually install if the mod is like, one I really enjoy, but expressly is not on CKAN. And yeah, you can mix CKAN and manually installed mods just fine. Trust me, give it a try, you will slap yourself for not having tried it earlier, it saves you so much time and hassle.
as far as i know (and it happened to me) in 9:30 the "chrome" works when you have the reflections on (in the game settings), at least at half frames or something like that (sorry for bad english)
There is a setting in the graphics menu of the game that you have to change, I cant remember what it is, i think it has something to do with reflections or reflection refresh rate or something. I've seen the problem before and I think that is what you have to do to fix it.
@vaos: I found a subreddit post that says for Chrome color issue, it says to turn up the reflections setting in TU settings (there should be a tab in game settings according to the post).
This video is amazing, however having some difficulties with turd, when I right click on a part it says that the texture set is not found. And when I open the part recoloring menu it's just blank and cannot be dismissed. I have turned on advanced tweakables. Any ideas anyone? Thank you
If you have followed the video to the letter, then probably, more then likely another mod interfering with turd. u might have to start on a clean install and find out which mod is messing everything up. 😢
Dude I almost never comment and I know this video is kinda old but THANKS! Ksp has been my hiperfixation for the last couple of months I don't know why it took me so long to mod it. Well explained dude your vids are awesome🎉

when i install ckan it only brings up the cmd window and nothing else and doesnt open anything, the only option i have is to close the cmd window and that doesn't do anything
How do you download CKAN to the desktop? I’ve seen people use CKAN but put it on their desktop right besides the KSP launcher like with some other games that require a dedicated launcher app.
I followed the instructions to download TURD, however when I am in KSP it is not there and no option to change appearance with parts. I double checked the KSP game data files and both extracted files along with CKAN, textures unlimited and module manager are there. Any ideas? Thank you.
I knew about the no mods on console problem but im wondering, i bought ksp on xbox originally but i can play it on windows through the xbox app. Will this still work?
Does anyone know how to fix an issue I have with CKAN. After installation and once I’ve moved the .exe file into the Ksp directory, ckan runs into a .NET Framework error ‘unhandled exception has occurred’ I think my pc is blocking the path from ckan to ksp no idea how to fix
I'm using Win10 now, but I was using CKAN with Win7 for years, no problem. Automating install made it so much easier, that I added things I wouldn't have otherwise.
I used CKAN to download 50 mods, the process of which nearly destroyed my SSD. When I finally got everything installed, it would have taken about 2 hours for the game to finally load. Modded KSP is a nightmare. I don't recommend it unless you're a highly trained computer technician/game developer with a monster PC and nothing but time to waste.
$5 a month is not worth a mod if he had a one time payment thing sure but $5 every-time i need to downlaod the file of $5 a month for the rest of the time im playing KSP neither sound appealing. Just let me do a one time donation for access.

For the almighty algorithm.
Good to see the interface on TURD is still the same. That passenger jet looked sweet.
I'd spent days trying to get this mod working, your video finally made it happen. Thank you
Thanks for this VAOS, always wondered how CKAN worked, I've always done it manually
Probably worth checking out Lazy Painter... I hear the author of that mod is very cool and smart and handsome.
And it can be installed via CKAN.
It's you, isn't it?
Have never used CKAN before, I like the control over what bits of mods you want that manual installation gives you.
Thanks

Thank you so much! This was super helpful. I somehow play KSP but am not very PC game savvy when it comes to modding.
Thank you for the video, I found it very interesting and helpful, now I can download mods without errors
Great explainer! Thanks man

If you have a fresh clean install of KSP and are running window 10 or higher, it should work. Not sure why it isn't working. 🙁

no, steam is just acting as a downloader for ksp. The game will be identical

Why did you named this way? There is nothing to do with modding, only installing mods.
Ok, I realize English isn't your first language, but installing mods is by definition, modding.
I use a Mac, and CKAN _really_ sucks. It's more like CKAN't
