I have a Ram 1500 Hemi V8 running a ZF-8 TorqueFlite 8-speed transmission. Changed the transmission and differential fluid at 60k or 40mi and i tow frequently with this across the US and Can. Have zero issue with transmission. Engine works great but i do oil changes more freq than the OEM recommends.
At 19:00, he describes the infamous 3rd generation Ford Focus (2012-2019, north american version). Along with the Ford Fiesta, this Focus equipped with the Ford DPS6 PowerShift transmission has received much criticism due to transmission shuddering, including several lemon law claims. There have been at least 6 revisions of clutch packs and transmission control modules since inception. ----- (I own a 2nd generation 2010 Focus, which has been a good car, with no transmission issues.)
The 9 speed in the Jeep is built by FCA under license from ZF. The Honda/Acura 9 spd transmission was made by ZF. The drivability of the Honda 9 spd improved greatly over the years.
One thing that really aucked and ruined a lot of dodge vehicles was their transmissions. However I must admit, the 8 speed was amazing. Always shifted smooth and accordingly, never had a slip or any hiccup. I was truly amazed by it. The worst transmission by far for me is a 10 speed ford transmission. It is horrendous!! It jerks, sometimes shifts earlt, sometimes late, jerks at low speeds sometimes, sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes i hit the gas, nothing.. then it jumps and shoots me into the seat.. downshiftd violently one time, the other time it doesnt downshift early enough.. the biggest pile of garbage ever made. Im glad I bought an EV
The ZF8 speed is a solid unit and is used by a lot of euro vehicles and generally has been solid. There have been some programming or wiring issues in certain situations but that’s generLly at the assembly end
I know it was a while ago, I’d say 2006 time frame. I have 3 family members that all bought dodge ram 1500s. I kid you not I was in one of them and we were driving to Las Vegas from Los Angeles. His transmission went out at 50k miles. The other two family members also had the same problem. One at 70k and the other at 80k. I know it’s a long time ago but after that experience I would never buy a dodge.
@@LSDdreams808-ZF gearboxes are the industry high water mark; specifically the 8sp units- everybody benchmarks ZF transmissions. They’re insanely robust. The 9-speed has had calibration issues in a few different brands vehicles, but that’s not a mechanical issue, and have since all been sorted out. The 9-speed is also very reliable mechanically, and today OEM’s know how to map the software properly so they’re not epileptic any longer. We hardly ever have to tear into ZF units for serious issues, even fewer for rebuilds. 8-speed is light years more reliable than Ford / GM 10-speeds
Mark bravo again Very well presented research I’m sharing this video with family and friends I know so many people who have been stranded by these problems Thank you for this video My best wishes always from Las Vegas Craig Excellent
I drove that same geenration Kia Sprotage and I have ZERO idea why people buy them. The overall drive quality and feel was very bad IMO. The car was sluggish as hell and would feel like its skipping gears, the car only had 50k KM. The interior was also appalling.... horrible feeling everywhere I looked and touched. money could definitely be spend elsewhere.... thanks for your videos man.
Thanks so much Jeffery, I agree, not inspiring and the quality is dicey at best. If they were dirt cheap, the. I get it, but they are not, so I would certainly go elsewhere
You know what I find amazing? As informed as the public is today as to which brands are crap it amazes me that Chrysler, GM and Ford are still around and haven’t gone bankrupt.
I disagree that the public is informed. Yes the information is out there and us car enthusiasts are privy to it but the vast majority of people are clueless and only buy cars based on interior and looks. So many of my friends, neighbors and coworkers keep buying these crap boxes and I get to watch them replace vehicles every three years or so.
@@jawsgreatwhite9966 People know which car brands are reliable just by word of mouth but they fall into the trap of shopping with their heart and not their heads. If I had the money to lease a vehicle every three years then yes I too would buy a car based on looks as issues would be covered under warranty. But I tend to keep my vehicles until the wheels fall off cuz I take care of my cars but in the end a lemon is still a lemon.
@@quyle9483 they’re cheap on the used market if they got high milage. You could get a chevy or dodge with half the milage and maybe even a year or two newer for 2/3 of the toyota. I think thats where people mainly mess it up lol
It took a while for me to like ZF transmissions! What’s specifically wrong with the 9HP? Just wiring? Did a 2x ATF drain and fill on a ‘19 MDX a couple months ago. Smooth and fast with that ratio spread!
I had a 2011 Murano that I bought used. Good car, smooth drivetrain, drove well, comfy seats. But inevitably, with about 200k km on it, the CVT started to give out. I'd still be driving it otherwise.
They solved the problem in the Murano in 2015 as far as the transmission...Some of the early ones had the bugs worked out...I believe the trannys were remedied by putting a first gear in them....This likely ensured the forward clutch packs weren't all getting smoked by 90k from all of the wear.
1:04 Ouch, I think it’s the same transmission on the all new Nissan Pathfinder. Just when I thought it’s going to be a hidden gem worth getting. What a let down.
I have owned 6 Dodge vehicles since 1980. Never had a problem with them. 1974 Dodge Charger, 1994 Dodge Caravan, 1999 Dodge RAM B1500 Van, 2005 Dodge Durango, 2012 RAM 1500, 2015 Dodge Challenger. I still drive my RAM 1500 and my Challenger Daily. People need to learn how to maintain their vehicles better.
Out of all of those transmissions you listed,,really only the caravans had issues,,and possibly the 99 Ram van due to chrysler leaving the check balls in the transmission lines...Drill those out and those trannys would last too..The 2012 ram and shockingly the v6s in the challengers were pretty good transmissions....BTW,,I'm from NH as well...lol...
BULLSHIT....there is no maintenance on body parts, electrics, computers, fuel system, body hardware, climate...and aside from oil changes nothing to do with the engine, transmission, or brakes for the first 50,000 miles. So when your Chrysler body parts, computers, fuel system, hardware, brakes, climate system, transmission, and engine fails on a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep as they always will, it has NOTHING to do with MAINTAINING the vehicle--it has to do with driving JUNK......so take your bullshit story somewhere else Goober---we are not buying it.....
Agree there are many dodgy transmissions out there but most are abused and never get serviced. Most people dont bother stopping before ramming the car into drive while reversing at speed
I was wondering on the Kia Sportage was that transmission problem just for that model or the one before it? And I agree on the last generation of ford focus they made in North America the dct was just nothing more then junk luckily you can by a used dct for about $1,500 in the us not sure how much they are used in Canada!
Good Morning Jeremy. Kia and Hyundai do use a lot of common drives throughout many models so many are not great and that Ford is just not good. If a person needs the Focus, the manual is the only way to go
For the Toyota Tacoma details are important. The AC60 transmission is only in the Gen 3 Tacoma (2016+), and I heard the problems were only in the first couple or few years of that generation.
My Ford (Falcon) G6E has a 6 speed ZF transmission which Ford say is sealed for life. Previously I had BA (Falcon) Fairmont also 6 cylinder with the same reliable Barra motor. but a 4 speed BTR transmission. When I had an external transmission cooler fitted they serviced it and then it started playing up. I am leaving the ZF alone. Thanks for the interesting report I guess transmission issues do not effect Tesla drivers. They are everywhere here now with three in my street.
Glad almost every car here in Europe is a manual!!! None of that autocrap. Tons of Kias Sportages here on the roads but no issues whatsoever because real gear shifter!!😅
Please- drivers in the US are already bad enough without confusing them more with a manual . Can't eat, smoke, slurp on a 44 and talk on the phone at the same time with a manual.
Those early 2000's transmissions gave Acura a bad name. My 2013 TL has 204,000 miles on it and still shifts great. I also take care of it though by changing the fluid and filter.
Thanks god there’s people like you on this hard times trying to wakes us about this auto problems so we don’t waste our money I can’t thank you enough god bless you 🙏 THANK YOU
You should add the Cadillacs 9 speed dual clutch. I just got rid of mine and bought a new manual civic. It slips it jerks and when cold doesn’t hit all the gears.
@@ECPP I think you might to do a lil extended research on your years as far as honda transmissions...There are a couple of years in the civic that had issues with the cvt but most of them are bulletproof,,including the accords that aren't a v6...
It depends on what year civic....If it's a 2014 or a 2015 I'd be concerned but every other year civic, esp 2016 and newer, those transmissions rarely go bad.
We had a 2019 Taco. Great truck, awful transmission. It was very prone to downshifting on the highway for what seemed like no reason at cruise, which made for a very annoying highway experience, but would not downshift when you’d expect.
Early Honda CVTs, From 14-15, These have been completely redesigned with launch Gears instead of solely relying on a Steel belt, But if course as an owner of a 2020 Civic Sport we chose the 6 speed manual with a None turbo charged 2liter engine, It's been all around Great performing Car with almost 50,000 trouble free miles, If this changes You'll be the first to Know, Why because it's the Right thing to do.👍🇺🇸😁

Im not sure about everyone else but ive bought 3 hondas and they always seem to have electrical problems. They just dont make them like they used too. But glad my Toyota no matter what model i get i never have any problems at all.
As a technician in the US Toyota and Honda makes the best cvt transmission in the automotive industry and I own a 2014 Honda Civic with a cvt transmission and I had no problems with it and it still works fine since the day I bought it.
Just went to the mail office, saw a towing truck towing a Hyudai getting towed with an elderly couple on the cabin. Right afterseeing a video on this channel regarding Hyundai.. true !
I have a 2014 Nissan Maxima with a cvt. At 110,000 it started slipping. Solution: change the NS-2 transmission, to the now NS-3. Pull the plug, 6 quarts drains out, put plug back in, put in 6 quarts NS-3. Transmission was fine after that till 30k miles later. Slipping again. Repeat previous process, but this time did it twice. Waited 2 weeks between each change. And....there is an external filter behind the driver side front wheel. Changed that. Transmission is running cherry now. Total cost so far $500.00 for the fluid, $50 for the external filter. A lot cheaper than the 8,000 the repair shop wanted, and the shop declared the slipping transmission not repairable. Hmmmmm.......
I'm loving your videos so much that I subscribed. Do you know if the 2015 4-cylinder Accord has the same transmission problem as the 2015 Civic? Thanks for your good work.

Why Has Their not been a Massive Consumer Recall on these units or a upgraded Transmission install offered by the manufactures ? Why do we keep seeing more cars being produced with these "bogus components" in them?
Don't understand why R&D doesn't catch these issues before the vehicle goes into production . It was rare to see these issues years ago with bad engines , trannys and other things that should not be happening. I was a mechanic from the 70's into the late 80's and I walked away from it , I could see the start of it in the late 80's and knew fixing cars was no longer an enjoyable trade.
GM 3800 V6 is the best but the transmission was built to breakdown at 100k miles. I maintained that 3800 and its transmission religiously… at 99k miles it broke down = $4,000.00!!!
After 2016, Honda CVTs have been reliable. Issues with the 1.5t mean engine bad, not CVT bad. Issues with the 2014-2015 CVTs do not represent Honda CVTs today

I have always been interested in why General Motors builds so much junk for that reason I have never bought a GM product.!
Not exactly. They did co develop the transmission together. Back when there were glass headlights, Ford, GM, and even Dodge used the same exact headlight. You could pull one off a Ford Econoline van and put it on a Chevrolet Express van as long as it’s the base model glass headlights.
@@atx-cvpi_99 who cares about glass headlights...those were universal..and weren't even made by each company I'm asking if the transmissions are exactly the same

My brother has been leasing ad driving NISSANs with the CVT for the past 18 years -never once had a problem (he always had the tranny fluid changed with the special NISSAN fluid at the receommended intervals.
Thats why i will keep my 2008 Chevy Trailblazer with the inline 6 had 70k when i bought it and i drive hard and now it has 256k on it motor still dont burn oil transmission still shift smooth i love it
I have a Ram 1500 Hemi V8 running a ZF-8 TorqueFlite 8-speed transmission. Changed the transmission and differential fluid at 60k or 40mi and i tow frequently with this across the US and Can. Have zero issue with transmission. Engine works great but i do oil changes more freq than the OEM recommends.
Thanks for sharing
You're so right about "Crapco" transmissions!
Haha, yes the CVT should not be in a street vehicle. It should go into off road vehicles only
At 19:00, he describes the infamous 3rd generation Ford Focus (2012-2019, north american version).
I own a 2008 Focus, same here with 180,000 miles. Runs great use it every day.
Get the ST with a six speed - solved! ☺️
Test drove my friend 2020 GT with the 10 speed. Indeed extreme jerky….
@@ECPPthey never had a good transmission
Mark bravo again
Very well presented research
I’m sharing this video with family and friends I know so many people who have been stranded by these problems
Thank you for this video
My best wishes always from Las Vegas Craig
Excellent
I drove that same geenration Kia Sprotage and I have ZERO idea why people buy them. The overall drive quality and feel was very bad IMO. The car was sluggish as hell and would feel like its skipping gears, the car only had 50k KM. The interior was also appalling.... horrible feeling everywhere I looked and touched. money could definitely be spend elsewhere.... thanks for your videos man.
Thanks so much Jeffery, I agree, not inspiring and the quality is dicey at best. If they were dirt cheap, the. I get it, but they are not, so I would certainly go elsewhere
It seems as if there's no vehicle that really will hold up. These auto manufacturers look like they make these things at five 'o clock on a Friday.
You know what I find amazing? As informed as the public is today as to which brands are crap it amazes me that Chrysler, GM and Ford are still around and haven’t gone bankrupt.
They’re not bankrupt yet because they sell more affordable cars than the equivalent japanese car is
@@erikh1041they are affordable on the used market. But they are overpriced brand new nowadays.
They are only good for 60k
True, but many of them are poorly engineered from the start putting car owners in a no win situation.
Nissan since it’s acquisition or joint venture with Renault has gone down the drain very sad 😮
That is a sad state of affairs indeed
Without Renault there would be no Nissan
21:00
Nissan has goldmine in the leaf. Shot themselves in the foot with the ariya and everything else.
I was wondering on the Kia Sportage was that transmission problem just for that model or the one before it? And I agree on the last generation of ford focus they made in North America the dct was just nothing more then junk luckily you can by a used dct for about $1,500 in the us not sure how much they are used in Canada!
Good
Morning Jeremy.
@@roberttassone7676 Dayum...🤣🤣lol!! But sad too actually...
2006 explorer v8 with 6r60 194k miles well maintained going strong. Great video
Look.for union label and run
worst car I ever owned was a 2001 Acura TL. had to have the transmission replaced TWICE! luckily it was under warranty both times.
Yes that generation had particularly bad transmissions which is ashamed because the rest of the vehicle was pretty nice for a car built in 2001
Those early 2000's transmissions gave Acura a bad name. My 2013 TL has 204,000 miles on it and still shifts great. I also take care of it though by changing the fluid and filter.
Thanks god there’s people like you on this hard times trying to wakes us about this auto problems so we don’t waste our money I can’t thank you enough god bless you 🙏 THANK YOU
Why did nissan decided to use CVT transmissions is beyond my comprehension
You should add the Cadillacs 9 speed dual clutch. I just got rid of mine and bought a new manual civic.
It slips it jerks and when cold doesn’t hit all the gears.
I've got 57K miles on my Honda CVT Mark, although it's been trouble free so far, I know it's a ticking time bomb.
It is a bit risky even in the Honda, but if it’s holding then that’s great to hear.
Honda Accord 2017 with CVT. 208,000 miles on it. No problems at all. I had Subaru Outback 2011 with CVT. Transmission died on 140 K.
@@newworlddisorder7210 That's encouraging.
There's an aftermarket Shift Commander (something like that) which reprograms the shift points and makes the truck what it should have been OEM.
Thank you so much for this info
You are so welcome
I'm pretty happy with only having only 4 good speeds in my 07 Silverado.
Especially if you have a 4l80e. One of hydraulics best
Thanks so much Mark great info. I had no idea that the Civic has or had cvt issues. Honda in house Transmissions are generally good.
Early Honda CVTs, From 14-15, These have been completely redesigned with launch Gears instead of solely relying on a Steel belt, But if course as an owner of a 2020 Civic Sport we chose the 6 speed manual with a None turbo charged 2liter engine, It's been all around Great performing Car with almost 50,000 trouble free miles, If this changes You'll be the first to Know, Why because it's the Right thing to do.👍🇺🇸😁
That was fairly early on in the cvt introduction. Recent years have been rock solid

I have been driving manual transmission vehicles since 1973 and never had a transmission problem besides having to replace the clutch.
Great content . Thanks👍
Seems to me that the more gears in a transmission, the more apt it is to fail or have major problems. Sometimes "hi-tech" is not the way to go.
Ford "powershift" in Australia here earned another nickname the "power-shit", love your work keep it up
Thanks for that!
There have been some spotty reliability with some more recently in the Honda arena, ie Accord. Sometimes it works and sometimes not as much
Interesting. Because when those honda cvts ran out of warranty I was repairing alot of them..
Keep the sarcasm coming. "Here's a little Winner." 😂.
I'm loving your videos so much that I subscribed. Do you know if the 2015 4-cylinder Accord has the same transmission problem as the 2015 Civic? Thanks for your good work.
This guy is too funny the colostomy bag on the Dodge Caravan did it for me🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can anyone explain me how is possible that the VW Eos 2.0 DI have a fuel pump moved by the timing belt among other little complexities ? I have done several timing belts and timing chains” even in the complicated and infamous Chrysler 2.7 L but I’ve never seen something like this 🙄🤦♂️
The Fiat 500X had a MT at least for some years.
I have a Nissan Sentra drain and fill cvt every year...as easy as an oil change..drive real easy and n troubles..must maintain tge cvt
Great coverage
Thank you I love your reviews ❤😂
Thanks for the informative video. How do you figure out which transmission is installed in the vehicle you are considering for purchase?
Easy
ZF 9HP is now used in nissan pathfinder!!

My 2015 prius has 306k miles aisin cvt no problems I change fluid every 50k miles.
Yup I have a 3gen taco. Hate the transmission. Should have got the manual
After 2016, Honda CVTs have been reliable. Issues with the 1.5t mean engine bad, not CVT bad. Issues with the 2014-2015 CVTs do not represent Honda CVTs today
Thanks
What a stark difference between the ZF9 and ZF8.

That is awesome!
it seems there's more junk transmissions then good transmissions. i bought a crosstrek in 2022 and i bought a manual instead of the CVT (it was available with a manual until 2024 MY). im happy with my choice, so far
This review shows that manual transmission is the KING!

I just check the list for this lawsuit the 2015 Tahoe is not on the list

Is the pesky auto transmission in the tacoma v6 an Aisin? Surprised since Aisin autos are among tge best for reliability and quality.y
So many cab companies run those Dodge Caravans
That used to be my indicator of a dependable vehicle?
CVT is the future in transmissions. Most cars are built with CVT. I've never had any issues. You people better get onboard. 😂 My GMC though, yikes! Never buying a GMC again.
Nothing wrong with cvt on honda just needs fluid changed at 40 and 80k
Do you own one? Mine some days is smooth all day then some days it jolts
Nothing can beat BMW 8 Speed ZF transmission, I think it’s one of top 3 .
Always look for a vehicle, that has a reliable engine and a reliable transmission.
I agree, the 2 most expensive and important part of any car
I will never touch a Chrysler car from my two experiences when I was a kid and almost killed by it.: My K car lost maneuver on the highway suddenly, then brake failure on my Turismo.
What's a kneesan?
These car companies need to make a change: If they can not build a car that is as dependable and reliable as a Toyota they need to go out of business! I love the R/4, and the Corolla. Nothing is perfect but I had fewer problems maintaining them than other models. I have always been interested in why General Motors builds so much junk for that reason I have never bought a GM product.!
Doesn't Ford use the same transmission as Chevy/GM in all their trucks/ large SUV's?
Well…..
Not exactly. They did co develop the transmission together. Back when there were glass headlights, Ford, GM, and even Dodge used the same exact headlight. You could pull one off a Ford Econoline van and put it on a Chevrolet Express van as long as it’s the base model glass headlights.
@@atx-cvpi_99 who cares about glass headlights...those were universal..and weren't even made by each company I'm asking if the transmissions are exactly the same
@@jayc4715 I'm not too sure as of recently. But the crossover suvs did. 2015 ford explorers had the same transmission as a gmc Acadia. But there were slight changes just so that you could NOT interchange the part between the 2 manufactures. General motors 6t70 is same as ford 6f50. Gm 6t45 is same as ford 6f35.
