Brilliant....Brilliant....Brilliant! I have been deferring buying a barrel cooler for years now on account of wanting to spend my toy fund budget on other things. Considering how cheap it is to build, there is no excuse to not make one now. BTW, I am so happy to see that I am not the only Defiance Action F Class competitor in this world !
Finally something affordable! It's compact and can be recharged at the range. I have room for this but not all the other gadgets you show. And a poor pensioner like my self can afford it! Thanks for the tip.
Ingenious and awesome idea!!! I bought one as soon as I saw this!! I've been thinking about getting a cooler when I'm testing my loads! Thanks!!! @F-Class John 💯👍
This just became my favorite video from you. I'm about to start some development with a skinny barrel AR. This will be great for adding between strings during workup. These new production barrels are capable of great (relative) accuracy- but heat buildup can quickly skew testing results after 10-20 rounds. Good news- if it heats up quickly, it will cool quickly. With my precision bolt guns, I rarely experience heat issues (I never really run a round extensive course of fire) but there is no reason to NOT run this for a few minutes between strings. Thank you!
I used mine for the first time yesterday. I could feel the warm air blowing out of the muzzle. The temp dropped very, very quickly and I was ready to shoot again by the end of the cease fire. This will save trips to the range, for sure. Thanks John.
Gonna build one of these this weekend. The pump you used is no longer available but there are plenty of choices to choose from. Got mine for $22 from Amazon. Two feet of 1/4 inch fuel line from Ace Hardware: $6.99. Case to cut: FREE. Thanks!
I'm all about DIY, thank you. I have the Chamber Chiller which operates off of batteries or usb battery bank. I'll do some wind testing with my Kestrel later. The other video showed it had the most downforce on a powder scale ....
Thank YOU - I found your channel following Ed''s channel. I enjoy the common sense ways to think about our reloading and shooting. Honest - a 5 inch group at 100 was where I was happy. But I knew I needed to ask why, hence I have been here following along! Cheers!
I like it. I've been using a Caldwell Accumax cooler. It was designed for an AR and fits into the magazine well. It has rechargeable batteries, and an LED light that glows in the action showing the chambere is clear. For a bolt gun I cram some 3/8" ID silicone tubing into the cooler and the ither ebd into my chamber. Caldwell discontinued the cooler, but they are still avaliable on Amazion.
Great idea! But something that most people don't realize is that air pulled through something cools faster than air that is pushed through. Food for thought 🤔
So here’s the funny thing. These pumps are also used to deflate and I worked on using it that way at the end of the barrel but it just didn’t work for me. It was tough to keep it on especially when I put my gun away in a bag between relays.
@@jdne5b Yeah I suppose that might be able to happen but the connection on the sucking end isn't nearly as good so I'd have to play with it.....challenge accepted!
So, turns out using a spent brass case for breach adapter gets stuck in bore if you suck the heat out through the breach. The is bc the brass absorbs heat and expands. At some point you have to push air back down the barrel and adapter to cool it enough to release. Or go in with a dental pick and pull out adapter if it separates from your hose.🤔
I use an aerator for a bait bucket with some plastic tubing. I put the aerator in a small lunch cooler with 2 re-freezable blocks and the other end in the chamber. It’s not the quickest because of air output. May try the fan/pump you bought. You may want to try a longer piece of hose and put that pump in a chilled cooler.
Also made my own. Difficult to get hold of the good ones in my country, and they are expensive. Edit: just ordered one from Amazon. Shipping is more than the pump but let’s see if it arrives 🤣 Looks like a good upgrade from what I have. Thanks John!
I experimented with hose sizes and fittings. Using a hose with a larger internal diameter and larger fitting yielded much more airflow (obviously). through optimization i went from 10 mph to 16 mph on my 26" 6.5 cm barrel. I used a hose with an inside diameter slightly larger than the cartridge (seat the cartridge inside the hose, opposed to the hose inside the cartridge like your video). I also cut open the shoulder so it is a straight cylinder without a constriction.
I tried a few DIYs but find myself throwing the Chamber Chiller Pro in my range bag most of the time. I could not get over the noise factor of the DIYs and the Chamber Chiller is just one little device easily carried, despite its weaker air flow. I connect it to my anker power supply, which I share with the Labradar.
I have a MagnetoSpeed and when it's in the chamber operating I throw a towel over top of the rifle and cover the pump and it deadens the sound. You can't do that with the other home made ones and I know because I have one and if you try to cover the pump you shut off the air flow. MagnetoSpeed also acts as a great chamber flag and very easy to install in chamber plus looks much better.
I didn’t realize battery powered mattress pumps had such a long life. I tried using my AC pump with a portable AC power pack once but the initial amperage draw kept clicking it off
I've seen on several of your videos that you have temperature strips on your barrels. What barrel temps do you like to achieve for shooting? I have a carbon fiber proof barrel. Where would you put one of those temp stickers on that barrel? Maybe put it on that barrel but look for a lower temp on the strip to associate with a higher barrel temp.
Wow, I am going to order one. I noticed the thermometer sticker which was pretty cool, what temperature do you need to stop and let it cool? Is there a general guideline calibers aside?
Here's those stickers, I'm going to do a video on them soon. amzn.to/3AvzRz7 but as far as temps go I try to start shooting a string at 110 degrees or less and that usually ends up with my barrel at 150 degrees after 25 rounds more or less. Depends of course on outside temps.
John love your videos! Learning alot! Question, I have searched your barrel videos looking for that link for that barrel heat tape but can't find it. Can you remember the company? I'll search from there. Thanks, bobby m.
this is the first time I've seen a temperature indicator. is it like a sticker? how long will it stay on the barrel any residue when it come off? where can i find them
John have you used cold packs? Just cool ones. Or is that too far into the condensation zone? Just curious. Like your new tool. I see guys pouring water down into the barrel but I am not going there. Seems like too much can go wrong in my opinion and more to add to the fiddle factor
I don’t use things like cold packs because it’s just not practical. I need to cool my barrel over multiple relays they could take 2/3 of a day and plus for travel it just takes up too much space and too much to manage. Having a barrel cooler that is simple and in my range bag all the time is just the easiest way to go.
I actually tested it that way and I didn’t like doing that for a couple reasons. The first is that it’s harder to get a secure connection on the end of the barrel and since a lot of the places we shoot are on the edge of berms if it were to fall off it would roll down and make for a more uncomfortable situation having to go get it potentially. The other is I honestly just found that blowing had more force than sucking.
@@FClassJohn lol, there’s another one similar that has add to cart option, and is around 20, just a different brand name, the one you linked doesn’t have a option to add to cart, you have to hit buying options, don’t understand what that’s about

Ever think about about feeding the air to the air pump from a cooler with ice packs?
Great timing. I have been looking to buy one.
After 20 + years of USPSA, I am moving to rifles. I have a 6mm dasher being built. This will come in handy. Thanks for the tip.

y not wrap an icebag around the hose or lay one of them freeze packs on the hose
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe tap a fitting into an old cooler with ice and put a hose on the intake side of the blower?
wHERE DO YOU GET THE TEMPERATURE STICKERS? hEAT STRIP?
What about going the other way? Use the deflate end of the pump and pull air from the tip. No chamber flag issues.

what is the quietist blower available ?
On the commercial market this is the quietest I've seen www.echelonrifles.com/product/simplycool-barrel-cooler/
The one thing that stops me from using any type of cooler is blowing dust or grit in my barrel.
You could rubber band a weed wacker foam air filter to it
