- In this video, Mechanic Pete shows you how to replace a track bar for a Jeep Grand Cherokee 99-04 models. When the track bar bushings become worn out, a common symptom is "death wobble." This may be the only part you need to replace to cure death wobble.
You did that the hardest way ever best way is leave the truck on the ground and have a friend move the steering inside the truck and all bolts come out with ease and go back with ease

If you adjust the wheel back and forth it will help line up a lot easier with the track bar holes.
Nice Video. I own a 2004 Grand Cherokee, with a 2" lift and I just replaced my track bar last night. I'm attacking the death wobble with changing this part first. I have 75,000 miles and I'm the second owner. One thing that worked for me is I was able to leave my truck on the ground and replace it. You can actually grab the rubber bump stop with a large pair of channel locks, squeeze and use the inside frame rail as leverage as you twist and the bump stop and it comes right out of the mount. This will give you the clearance you need. In my case I had a bump stop extension bracket that I 100% needed to remove completely to remove the bolt. Helpful hint, if you jack up the truck on the driver side frame rail, you can raise the suspension while leaving the truck tries on the ground. This will allow for more access to the bump stop. Yup I am doing a 4 inch lift now and you have to remove rubber bump stops to get to bracket for spacers

Ramps allows weight in wheels. The "mount" is a jounce bumper aka bump stop. The bumper presses in the retaining cup. Channel Locks and rock it out. With weight on wheels remove bolts(an ass'istant can joggle the steering wheel to relieve tension if any).

My husband put new shocks all the way around and we did have the death wobble and now it's gone thanks to my husband he is a good mechanic
All right everybody stop dissing on this guy and saying that you still have death wobble. He did not say all death wobble issues come from the track bar. You have bushings everywhere in the front end and death wobble can be caused by many different things. My advice if you have death wobble is replace every bushing and ball joint and inspect your steering box and replace that if necessary. I have a 97 Grand Cherokee and I just slightly started to get the wobble and when I inspected the front end I found that I had disintegrated a control arm bushing. If you fix your death wobble problem by replacing one part you are extremely lucky. I would say that the worse the problem is the more parts you have wore out.

Those pop out using screw driver. No need to cut them.

Steven - I would hope your comment of turning the tires all the way to the passenger side to open up both bolts covered in a Repair Manual on R&Ring the traction bar? I would hope so.

Just take a screwdriver and carefully pry the bump stop out, you can easily push it back in place with your hand, it has little tangs sticking out in inside of the cup holder to hold it in place...

01 Grand Cherokee, best advise given, Jack up at ft. Diff. to align. Bolt holes. Put drivers side in first, easier to see pass side when jacking differential to align bolt hole....perfect. Thank you..
Re: The bump stop, cutting or sanding it down with a straight air die grind sander is one way. Another way, I used a large curved end pry bar to lift up on the cushion and pushed the screw out. Same in reverse to install screw. Third and a lil tougher method you could remove it with 2 or 3 flat head screw drivers and the pry bar to pull it out. Use the 2 or 3 flat heads to separate the cushion from the catch spots then use the pry bar to remove it. Tricky to fit it back in. Gotta sorta stuff it back into place with larger screw drivers and or straight pry bars. My vote the lift up technique worked best for me or cut/grind it down. Remember your safety glasses too ;)
It's called the jounce bumper ... two screwdrivers will pry it out of your way and then you can reinstall it ... since you chewed on it like a chipmunk ... don't sweat it you can buy another one and change it out .. it's in the Hanes service manual for the Cherokee ... which you probably should have read before you ever attempted this ... because it clearly says remove the jounce bumper ... from its retainer cup using two flat screwdrivers to pry it out of its locking tabs .. and then remove the bolt

I’m doing this same job this week except I’ll be using a adjustable trac bar because I have a 2.5” lift
2.5 you can still rock tbe stock bar, i bought a zone adjustable, it hits my axle, so i just bought the stock one new and gonna throw it in
I replaced the track bar on my 01 jeep grand Cherokee this past Saturday, jumped on the highway after and still get the death wobble.

Omar Rivera they say the calipers will also cause that if you have the teva calipers cause they don’t center properly.
Move the stearing wheel it helps taking the bolt out
Bump stops just pip out with a screwdriver and the truck should be on tires when you tighten bolts just took 10 to 15 years off the bushings by doing it that way
My death wobble came from the 2 lower tie rods. Problem fixed!

I have the death wobble and I checked my track bar bushings and no problem with them. Next I'm going to do my tie rod ends. Hopefully that fixes it. I really don't want to have to do ball joints!

The rubber bumper, or stop, whichever you want to call it, comes right out. I suggest a regular screwdriver. I used a 2ft prybar I had under the truck with me and used it as a screwdriver. Twisting the handle and useing the tip of bar, it came right out. Then simply pushed it back into the mount.
Different solution: went through everything - track bar, stabilizer bar, tie rods, shocks, pit arm...and some certainly were worn and needed replacing. But, the real problem on my 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo having the death wobble? The wrong size tires! So easy to check and just spaced on doing that first. Kept replacing all the aforementioned parts, kept going into the shop (noting they didn't find it either, 2 different shops). The tires were too small, they were also fairly narrow. Hope this helps someone. Problem was solved instantly and never had the death wobble since.
Upper and lower control arms 9× out of 10 if replacing track bar doesn't fix the DW
@@danielhall3575 Good to know; in my situation however it was the tires being the incorrect size for the vehicle (too small in diameter)

question i need to remove the welded lower nutt on the track bar cause my bolt and welded nutt got striped any ideas on what i can do to put a new bolt and nutt
I have the same thing going on with my 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo could it be the same issue? Cuz I can't keep dealing with it anymore it only happens every now and then but when it happens it sucks a lot
Which track bar did you end up using? There is a lot on the market and I am not sure which one to go with.
I removed mine today but on the bottom end of the bar only the bolt came out, not the nut? Did your low 18mm nut come down or not??
Instead of cutting that rubber bump stop, you can use a flat head screwdriver and pry it out. Just pop it back in when you get the bolt out.
Would just replacing the bushings have the same end result?

when you took out the passenger side bolt do the nut on the back side in the hole come off as well?

I got my 00 grand Cherokee fixed by replacing the steering damper. Nothing else. It was real bad. I couldn’t go faster that 50 miles without my Jeep shaking my brains out. I checked the track bar and had some play but it was ok. The other parts had also play but they didn’t affect the driving. Hope this info helps someone. Monroe part SC2962
If you have ANY play that is where your wobble comes from. The steering damper just masks symptoms.
the passenger side bolt isn't coming i done took drivers side bolt out n wiggled it as i wad trying to turb it but i could only get the bolt to turn a little

I have a the see truck same year with over 300k miles having the same issue plus ball joints I want to just sale it. Do you think anybody will buy it? 😂😂 People are telling me hell no but these trucks get better with time. My baby goes i can tell you that much. I'm wanting to get a Wrangler maybe a newer model but the older models are what I love.

Not sure if your still answering comments, but I've got a 99 with a death wobble that feels like tour crashing in a 747, I replaced the track bar, passenger outer/upper tie rod,, everything else was tight. The only thing I noticed is when I was aligning the track bars bolt, when I would use a little pressure on the pry bar the entire frame moves, it will move that side fraim rail, the engine and the other side, I've never seen this before, any ideas?
Hey Mark..sorry for the late response. I haven't heard of that. Have you looked at your upper and lower control arms? If the bushings go bad on those, it can cause the death wobble as well. I don't think it would cause the whole frame to shift though when you're aligning the track bar.

I changed my control arms and my death wobble is cured. Upper and lower.
I purchased my parts from rock-Auto online.
I've literally replaced every suspension and steering component on my WJ and still have death wobble.

That's not a traction bar. That's a track bar. Two totally different things. Don't use big words to make it sound like you know what you're talking about..
Replace all tie rod ends
make it easy on yourself......remove the bumpstop.

I've been told that simply replacing the shock connected to the track bar will correct the wobble. Can anyone give me feedback on that?
It didn't work on my issue....Not every death wobble is the same, but it might work for yours.
I replaced mine. Your video gave me the courage to just go out and do it. It was massively easier than I had anticipated.
It took about 80% of my rattle away.. and no death wobble since. I know that the bushings on my control arms could use replacing. I'm going to sell and upgrade.

track bars are worst design ever, the whole front end depends on this one bar for stability, it just rounds out mounting holes and makes jeeps death traps, don't fix it people, just sell it or scrap it, I have replaced bearings, all ball joints, shocks and the track bar has rounded out again. not a good investment, take my advice get another car
