  • Thanks for watching! The Yankees faced a major problem in 2014, when Derek Jeter retired. They failed at finding his true successor. But in the 2023 season, Anthony Volpe made his MLB debut. In 2024 however, he's been incredible.

    Didi was a very good shortstop for the Yankees. So it was not all bad after Jeter left.

    as of the day i'm watching this, volpe is on a 21 game hitting streak. good to see how well he's done in his second season.

    The start of the season for Volpe has been unreal, but definitely not sustainable. That said, if Volpe can be a consistent 20/20 player with an above average OPS+ and keep his steller defense, he could be a top 5 SS in the league.

      “If he can’t stay a 20/20 player.” Are you insane? Why would we want him to be aiming to hit 20+ home runs a year? The kid has speed and now has contact. He has not 1, or 2, or 3, but FOUR+ power hitters behind him when he’s lead off. The kid needs to get on base however possible. We need him to focus on keeping his average above 300 and his OBP above 350. This kid should be swiping 35+ bags a season.

    Crazy that Jeter won 5 GGs when he had the worst Total Zone Runs in the history of our great game (-186)

      The worst defensive player ever. It’s a shame he has any gold gloves. Great hall of fame player, but to have a gold glove being a terrible defender is a shame to MLB.

    • @codygurnick6405
      @codygurnick6405 2 місяці тому +4

      @chunkymonkey428 he's in the hall because he happened to play for a team that won 5 rings in his time and he has 3000 hits.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 місяці тому +2

      He's in the hall because he has the 13th best JAWS for any shortstop, was a key factor in winning those 5 rings you act like he just happened to be there for. Because he didn't just have 3,000 hits, he had 3,465 and the list of people who have more can be counted on one hand. Because he batted .310 for his career and .321 in 7 World Series.
      And say what you will about his range, he had a good glove and made some sensational plays. Saying he was a bad defender is unfair. Bad defenders can't make the plays they get to, throw the ball away. Jeter was actually a very good defensive player within his, admittedly, smaller range. Very heads up defender who always positioned himself properly to cut off throws. Always threw to the right base for a particular situation.
      But defense aside, his HOF credentials are not in doubt by any serious person.

    • @codygurnick6405
      @codygurnick6405 2 місяці тому +1

      @@snerdterguson he had a good arm, but the metrics don't lie about his defense. He won 5 GGs because he was flashy and he was liked by the writers. He was a great hitter, but his career WAR would be 8.3 higher if he was even an average defender. And he did just happen to be a Yankee. He lucked out being drafted by them. He ends up anywhere else, and he isn't talked about the way he is. He won 4 of his rings at the height of the Yankees dominance in the 90s.

    • @snerdterguson

      It has happened, it just ended poorly. Going way back, they developed Seaver, Koosman and Ryan, later on was Strawberry and Gooden. Then David Wright and Jose Reyes. More recently there's Alonso.
      The Mets issue is they develop them and then they walk, or they get hurt. To quote the great Don LaGreca, "Who's the Mets forever player? Ed... Bleeping... KRANEPOOL!!!"
      But development? Actually quite a few. Even as I wrote that I realized I left off DeGrom.

    How did Jeter win any gold gloves? He was an error machine!!

    • @PurelyBaseballYT
      @PurelyBaseballYT  2 місяці тому

      Truth!!!

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 місяці тому

      Only 44 shortstops in history had a higher career fielding percentage, so it would appear you are mistaken.
      And he played the second most games at the position, yet is 99th in errors.
      This movement to pretend Jeter was a bad defender is weird. Like, we all watched him. We saw the plays he made. He may have had limited range, but a defender isn't bad because of range. They're bad because they can't make plays they get to. Because they make bad throws. Because they make errors often, which you mistakenly remember Jeter doing.
      If he were as bad as people pretend,he would be the all time leader in errors,he wouldn't be tenth in assists or sixth in double plays turned. If he was as bad as you think, Giambi would have been safe at home and the Yankees would have been headed home.

    Replacing Jeter as a shortstop is easy as he was never a good shortstop. Main issue is replacing Jeter as the captain and I don't think Judge will ever be able to fill that spot.

    • @TaliaNeuhauser
      @TaliaNeuhauser 2 місяці тому

      Im not sure anybody else realized how bad he was and how many errors he had, but im glad to see that people know

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 місяці тому +2

      I mean, led the league in errors twice, but also led the league in fielding percentage for shortstops twice. In career FP, he is 45th all time. Certainly not legendary or anything, but hardly something to be knocked over. Meanwhile, he's 99th all time in errors by shortstops, so in the whole, the positive outweighs the negative there. He also is second all time in games played at the position, tenth in Assists at the position and 6th all time in turned double plays.
      People act like he was a trash defender when the reality is he was a very good defender with limits to his range. Bad defenders don't make spectacular plays with the regularity he did.
