Thanks for that! I've never had a Turbo until I got my PT cruiser. People told me I should let it warm up some and you explained why. Interesting and thanks for everything!
A question for you Matt, as well as any other pt owners out there: Could my 2004 pt cruiser gt handle a supercharger as well? (I am having a mid-life crisis but can't afford a challenger..next best option.. take out the sxt+ in the quarter mile)
I mean boost is boost I suppose, but of course there are no kits available or anything so you would be having to fabricate some stuff to make that happen for sure. Personally I would look into just upgrading the turbo setup and computer tune. Really I’m the wrong person to talk to because I haven’t even modified a PT, I just fix and maintain mine, I have great fun blasting around corners even in the non-turbo PTs.
Funny, in a sad way, just had the exact same issue in an 04 Forester XT that sat for a while. They come with a fine mesh screen in the turbo oil supply banjo bolt and I believe that clogged from sitting and probably some prior prolonged oil change intervals. Both cars are a TD04 as well! I'm rebuilding that one with an upgraded bearing kit and upgraded turbine/compressor on a budget. The old wheels contacted the housing, so aren't reusable. I bought a used turbo for the XT and it still has a bit more play than I'm comfortable with, so rebuilding that one too. I actually bought a dial indicator to do a proper check just to make sure it's actually out of spec though. Gonna make a video on it as well, since info out there is lacking. The upgraded rebuild kit is only $40 with a billet brass thrust bearing and larger thrust washer. I know they make similar kits for the PT turbo since again they're largely the same. Hope you can nurse that turbo a bit longer!
802 Garage That will be good info, I just don’t have time to rebuild one right now myself. The one in my black car seems good and the eventual plan is to put the engine from the convertible in that car so that will solve the issue.
Thanks a ton. My 2008 PT is in the shop right now. They found a tear in the boot. I have no idea how long it’s been like that. Thanks to this video I will know to ask if they saw any damage to the turbo because of it. The other take away is knowing to let the car idle prior to turning off the ignition. By the way, it sounds like you might be from my neck of the woods, hey-der.

When I start my car somedays there a squealing. Reffing it stops so I think it's a belt. But the big problem I have is my headlights and dash lights for my gauges are flickering. What would cause that?
ALWAYS buy turbo parts from a manufacturer, they have a reputation to protect, thus they know what works best and what doesn't. Big box stores deal in volume and tend to buy cheap and sell high. Need I say more.
Good day Matt, Is the TIP solenoid open or close when the engine is not running or best how to check my boost solenoid? I got a P1188 code. Thank you in advance.
Matt, I own a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Limited Edition. Recently, It has encounterred some probs. After I had a individual work on it , it drives or seems 2 not have the same power. He said he replaced the water pump etc. He also told me it doesnt have a turbo. Do u know how I can find out if it does or did? I hate 2 say but im hoping he didnt remove it and place it on another vehicle. Please help the car totally sucks 4 torque now.
They didn’t put any turbos on PT cruisers till 2003, so it definitely never had a turbo. My guess would be that he got the timing marks off and your vehicle is out of time which will lead to poor throttle response like you’re experiencing.
colin gates Currently it’s collecting dust in the shop but I certainly still plan to build it back into a car. My Neoru build is taking all my time and focus currently so once it’s done I can get back to things like the Model A build.
Hey there! I have a 2006 pt turbo and the egine light is on.its having problems shifting so i replaced the alternator, battery, computer and it still going in limp mode.only thing im thinking of now is the shift selenoid so what you think.
I had the same problem with my 06 pt cruiser i had the code P0700, I changed the solenoid and the speed sensors and nothing, I didn't know what to do until I found this video and solved my problem, now the transmission works perfectly, the only thing is that the video is in Spanish ua-cam.com/video/NybkcvrccCY/v-deo.htmlsi=Cpi0szDXngl-HtYZ

Thanks for the feedback! Enjoy that turbo Cruiser!👌👍
Thanks Matt. Great crash course in turbos. Always like your posts.
Lawrence Irvine Glad you enjoyed, thanks for the feedback.
Thing to to is go bigger turbo, just not ( OVERBOARD)
Oil "catch can" will take care of that oil in the turbo intake
Very informative thank you good job man
Like a turbo vert. Pretty cool!
Joes Golden Garage Thanks Joe, it’s been a fun summer daily.

The turbo was fine BTW. They showed me the torn boot. It was a huge tear. It’s got me wondering how that happened.

Alternator, possable slipping belt
Amazon sells turbo charger cartridge for PT Cruiser turbos. Do you have an opinion on the cartridge replacement idea?

Matt have you purchased a turbo? I have a bad one on my pt!.. trying to find out where I can get a good one or recommendation?

Sorry I just don't know where to find that information and you caught me at a busy time otherwise I would search a bit more.
What about smoke coming out from tailpipe and no it’s not head gasket. Would that be the turbo or possibly pcv valve ?
Gracias matt

Do you have to purge the turbo
You mean like the oil feed when you’re installing a new one? Yes that would be a good idea to make sure it primes up before you do the initial start.
250,000 rpm?
Jon Cooper Correct, I confirmed that with multiple sources.
Tslk too much
