    • @hannahc6049
      @hannahc6049 6 років тому

      cavies12345 most foals are weaned between 3 and 5 months. Cocos mom died when she was 3months old so she had to be weaned early. She lost a bit of weight bc she wasnt quite ready.

    Why do u have a halter on a 2week old foal?!!

    • @rajvader
      @rajvader 5 років тому +1

      Probably because she hasn't learned to stuff her face into one like more experienced horses do when it's time to 'catch' them, and the owners don't want to try to tackle her and wrestle the halter on in the paddock.

    • @beachbunny7256
      @beachbunny7256 5 років тому +2

      @@rajvader They don't need to put a halter on a young foal. Just lead the mother and the foal will follow. His neigh is so adorable it brings tears to my eyes!!

    • @rajvader
      @rajvader 5 років тому +2

      @@beachbunny7256 Sure she'll follow along... Until she gets distracted and runs off to get into potentially dangerous mischief while you've got your hands too full with a hysterical mare to go rescue the little idiot... You can see at the end of this video she has no respect for fences yet.
      Starting from day two, I halter the foal and focus on leading her, allowing momma to follow along on the loose end of the lead. The halters pose little risk during supervised turnouts, and come off when the foal learns to stand for haltering, which happens before they get turned out into the bigger pastures with less supervision.
      It's far easier, safer, and gentler to halterbreak a 100# foal than a 500# weanling. (Or, in our case a 200# foal vs a 1000# weanling.)

    Why dose she have a halter on

    • @hannahc6049
      @hannahc6049 6 років тому +3

      gertrud35173. 1) to get her used to it while she's small enough she can't hurt them. 2) so they can catch her.

    • @aderynbird6372
      @aderynbird6372 6 років тому +4

      Please explain how a headcollar is "torture"? From my fifteen years working around horses, it's never caused them harm or distress. Not once. Foals need to be accustomed to these things before they get big so that it doesn't cause them stress when they are actually introduced to it all like it's no big deal. Honestly gently introducing them to things like halters specifically designed for foals would do more to reduce stress and torture than actually cause it.
      Also "pussy shit" for not being able to catch an adult horse that runs faster than you possibly could? No matter how well trained they are because ultimately a horse is a herd animal who's instincts will elect to flee over fight or freeze? Yeah, really well-informed insult there.

    • @aderynbird6372
      @aderynbird6372 6 років тому +5

      I already have a brain thanks, so I'd perhaps suggest you obtain some manners along with some proper equestrian experience. This isn't a situation where they are in the wild where human interference is minimal. These are horses that are bred and trained for showmanship. They will be handled by humans a lot, so this is the ideal time to start introducing them to these things so it won't freak them out when they are bigger and heavier, and could cause far more damage to themselves and their trainers.
      If the horses were turned out full time and totally unsupervised, then a halter is not necessary and could potentially cause injury should it snag on something. But in a small enclosure where there is virtually no risk? When the foal's not learned any herd manners yet or what not to eat, and any responsible owner would prefer to be able to quickly catch them before they hurt themselves or eat something poisonous? I don't think that it qualifies as torture.
      Kindly observe how the foal in the video is not distressed, frightened, or anxious. She's happy and calm while she enjoys a little grazing as she learns to eat what mum does. A few straps of thick canvas isn't really torturing her. Now if they were to put a bridle on a foal with a metal bit, THAT would be torture. That WOULD scare her.

    Why can dad horse not see baby

    • @hannahc6049
      @hannahc6049 6 років тому

      Claire Cooper typically studs are kept away from mares with foals, for the same reason foals are given a few days before they are put out with the big herd. Big horses can accidentally hurt a foal. One small kick and they are dead. Studs tend to get excited easily, so they are often kept away.

      1. It's called a headcollar/halter. (Depends where you live.)
      2. Leadropes are attached to them to help the owners move them. If Coconut was about to eat ragwort, they would be able to snatch her away.
      3. It's not your decision.

    • @RedBev59
      @RedBev59 7 років тому +7

      Well, that remark from a couch critic who has no clue says it all. Of course at this age they DO need baby halters. This is the age you get them used to everything. If she goes out of her fence........they can get her faster before she gets hurt. THAT day will come too. That's only tape up and she's peeked under already. It's only a matter of time them they'll put her in a real paddock with fencing. If she goes to eat something she shouldn't they can catch her faster too. there's tons of CRAP in pastures that adult horses know not to eat but babies have to learn the hard way. LOL She's fine with a baby halter.

    • @syxac1275
      @syxac1275 7 років тому +7

      qbulb I think it's kind of their decision. And they made things a little less complicated, because when they are older it is way harder for them to get used to those things.. And look at her , she ain't looking/behaving like she wants it to be off.

    • @spiderleg648
      @spiderleg648 6 років тому +2

      It's good to halter train them while they're young. And it's not hurting the filly so it's fine

    • @devilssemblance5938
      @devilssemblance5938 6 років тому +2

      qbulb I'm not a huge fan of leaving halters on horses, but supervised like this is alright. Leaving them unsupervised with a halter on is dangerous as she could get caught on something and mom wouldn't be able to help.
