Very often nostalgia defies logic. An old guy was keeping an aircraft in a hangar on an airfield where I once kept one of mine. In his late 80s he decided to stop flying when his eyes began to go and he had difficulty finding his way back after taking off and flying around for a bit but he still kept that plane in the hangar regardless. Someone contacted me via my blog and asked if I would put him in touch with the owner because he'd seen the plane mentioned on my blog and wanted to buy it for good money but the old guy didn't want to know. After 4 or 5 years he sadly passed away leaving the aircraft in the hangar and a year or so ago the owner of the airfield also died and it's now under probate in the hands of the lawyers. The last time I looked the plane was still there and I keep meaning to let the old guy's family know because as sure as eggs is eggs soon it'll disappear. BTW Jimmy, the Aztec was always the one you should have saved. Stop banging your head against the brick wall in the form of the 310, unless you have a LOT more money than sense that is. If you are totally nuts and still need to find a black hole to pour your money into you can always return to it after the Aztec is back in the air where at least one of the hangar queens that you seem so intent on collecting needs to be at some time. Otherwise, what's the point in all of this? I'd also point out that by considering the 310 as basically a parts donor for the Californian aircraft you yourself have pretty much recognized that it's a basket case. You only have to look in the mirror and admit it.

Hi Jimmy, Your Beech Bonanza is a straight 35 Sn.D 147 . It's got the 185 Engine ,which is limited to 185 on take off , for a few minute , and then reduce to 2100 RPM for climb out at 165 hp.It also has the tubular main spare, which needs magnifluxed quite often, unless a spar kit is installed, and then every 500 hours. My serial number was D-1325 a 48 mod. with nose gear steering and an A model fire wall. There are AD notes on the Mags, the Spar, and the "V" tail mounting block ! There may be more, 'cause I haven't had mine for many many years. Do some home work to see if it is worth it. Bob
Another great video Jimmy! Just a pity you couldn't secure the 310 alone, but after reading previous comments maybe it's time to call it on the the 310 and do the Aztec instead? Still following no matter which way you go!! Cheers from Australia
Huge projects. Costly projects. It will be interesting if he gets one of these in the air in 90 days as he mentioned. Thanks for another great video, Jimmy!
Put some tires on it and do a couple of fast taxi runs. That seems to work. LOL I mean what could go wrong? 😝 I"m glad you got someone going over the airplanes with you instead of others I've seen.
I would love to see those planes revived, the 310 and 320 are my favorite civilian aircraft. That 411 is neat. Hopefully you can work something in the future.
LOL, Jimmy, you are such a 'Wingnut' and I Love That about you!! From these 4, I would choose the 320, 411, and then take apart the 310 to get it back home, leave the Dr Killer in CA. JMO.
It’s always like this when dealing with older dudes, they all think they are going to finish their projects. Those planes have been sitting for 20 years and he says he’s going to finish them in 90 days. Yeah right! Sorry Jimmy!
Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Jimmy, this was an interesting look at some very dirty airplanes. I am totally blown away that these units are left alone that many years and no attention. Wow. Lots of investment just left to idle away. Interesting. Do you see this a lot where aircraft are just left to the whatever????? Please accept my next words as mine alone. I am just saying. I am glad you passed on these. Believe these were a mess and would require a lot of expense to get going again. Do not think the owner knew exactly what he did and did not have. Thanks jimmy. You take care. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for everything. Retired Air Force veteran.
Hey Jimmy, congratulations on doing the right thing, walk away while you can.. would love to see Mighty Mouse fixed and flying. This guy will call you again. Keep up the good work, save MM; love your adventures! Make the trip home a fun one. Best regards again from Holland.
Hey jimmy glad everything is okay since you didn’t upload yesterday but I also know you have been busy keep up the great work and thank you for your service!
I'm 57 today. Yes, when you get older, you get grumpier! Things that you thought were last year were 20 years ago! You think you're 30, and attempt to do what you did when you were that age! He remembers buying and flying each of those airplanes. He remembers how much he paid for them. He'd like to get that money back......
@@mikemaccracken3112 much appreciated! If you're a curious old guy like me, you might enjoy my small channel. Maybe a birthday gift from you could be a free sub.
Keep looking. Maybe you can find a full engine are 2 that are stored with low hour's somewhere for a good price. I was coughing with all the dust coming through the tv when you were looking at those plane's. :)
Well, I'm betting everybody's thinking the same thing I'm thinking, wich is, if you're going to have to comply with an AD note on the 310 cranks on all 4 engines, then you may as well overhaul the ones that are on the plane now, rather than haul the other engines out here, after doing the same.
The 310 that is sitting in Fla is roached out, the wiring is totally fubar and well Jimmy went through all the reasons that it’s financially beyond help . I was hoping he could bring it back but after he went through it one kind of ends up agreeing with Jimmys assessment
@@rickjohnson1632 Yeah, once he pointed out the buckles in the nose behind the nosegear, I knew that bird needed more love than the plane is worth. Meanwhile, he was talking about yanking the engines, and bringing them to California - and maybe splitting the cases - bringing up that $6000 AD per engine. Fwiw, may as well rebuild the engines that are already on it.
So glad all is good after noting there was no video yesterday! This was great - wow, 4 different aircraft possibilities. But FWIW, I don't get a good vibe from that fellow, but you never know. Something might work out, or maybe it won't. Then you will know it is time to move on. One thing I know for sure is that none of those 4 aircraft will be repaired and inspected and flying in 90 days. It's just not going to happen. Great video though - I had a blast watching and waiting to see what you found when you moved a cover or opened a door. There just something about 'things' that have been sitting in one spot for decades that grabs my attention. Thanks for the fun Jimmy!
The thing with hoarders, they believe their stuff is worth the moon. Like more than any sane person would pay retail for. You'll never talk this guy down to earth. Those planes are worth pretty much scrap value at this point. The best thing about watching these videos is seeing you learn the basic truths of human behavior spelled out in airplane parts.
Jimmy, never sell yourself short, when your negotiating, don't lead with "I don't think you're going to like it". If they don't like it, they'll tell you and then if they ask for more behind why on the numbers. Just some tips from a pro!
411 were maintenance nightmares when regularly flown 30years ago. 320, kinda rare, kinda cool. Bonanza is good for parts, you’ve already got 1 old 310….
Jimmy, we have all seen sellers like this. Just let their stuff sit there and rot and still think it's worth way more than it is and so there it sits. That's why they have been sitting there deteriorating for way too long already. Just can't do that with airplanes. There will never be safety and reliability without major work on all of them. He should unload the pile before his family needs to do it for him at pennies on the dollar. I suggest you look at projects more in reach that you can have fun with that have not been left for so many years which require an over-abundance of risk and time to you as the new owner. Besides, we as viewers will have more fun watching you get reasonable projects up and running faster. Maybe just 1 long term BIG project on the side at a time, while you get others that are not in such bad shape flying quickly again? Good luck with all that you do and looking forward to the next video!
That guy on the phone is a salesman for sure. What are the odds he bought those planes in to sell then never moved them on for whatever reason. Or maybe he's selling on behalf of others. No way a random 88 year old guy ends up with such a bunch of old machines in varying states of repair - seems too weird. Anyways, it makes for good UA-cam and I'm looking forward to the next episode Jimmy. Loving the content...!
Too many unflown years. In the AF an inflown bird needed a lot of looking after and refine. Glad you have your very very knowledgeable friend helping you. You’re no pushover when it comes to airplanes. Yeah oh boy, some of those engines I’d rebuild to put in a car!!!!😂🤣😅🤣👍👍or a swamp buggy. 😵💫🫣😂
It's amazing to consider that the Bonanza is worth about as much in used control surfaces as it would be as a flying airplane. That's the current reality of magnesium.
Hi Jimmy, It is best to avoid the early Bonanzas with the welded tube spar carry through and/or narrow tail surfaces which covers all Bonanzas built before 1952. Unless you get it for a price where you can invest the time to part it out, let it go. For saving the 310, the California 310 might be good but you are wise to really check out the engine issues/$$$. The old turbos in the 320?? The engines in the 411?? All depends what you want to do with the 320 and 411. I think you are seeing that in the absence of damage and/or corrosion, the Cessna light twin airframes are well built. What a shame the high $$ today with anything to do with engines. 50 years ago the E series Continentals were considered "old" engines but Continental had people who knew that engine and could offer a factory reman. Today I would say the E series engine issue eliminates Bonanzas built before 1957, unless they have the newer IO-470 STC. On the specific engines you are looking at in the 310s and 320 I assume you have spoken with Continental about any possibilities of a factory reman on any of those. You have probably already learned that the engines in the 411 are another breed both $$ wise and complexity. The 320 would be a real scooter up around 15,000' to 18,000' assuming there is an engine reman and turbo upgrade option that makes $$$ sense. You can sense my bias toward "factory reman" on horizontally opposed aircraft engines. You have no assurance of how they were operated or maintained before the airplanes were parked. Many of us have safely flown many thousands of hours with engines that were operated and maintained by the book.
Been sitting for 20 years "When my back gets better I will get them annual and flying". 20 years from now they still be sitting in the same spot. That guy will never get any of these flying my guess his wife will sell them for scrap when he passes.
320 is a solid 200knot airplane. All have four windows and it has an amazing single engine performance of about 16,000 feet. great true cross country airplane.
Great video Jimmy. And the seller has quite the story of his background as well. You might not be dancing back to Florida, but at least with the 4 aircraft, you got your share of polka-ing around!
I don't know where you found Mark, but he knows these aircraft ❤! redbaron Chattanooga ( The squeaky noise made great background music 🎵, you should always run some ominous sounds before flying this stuff 2500 miles home on your videos)
Finnish the AzTruck. There is your airplane. I grew up watching Sky King and love the 310, but I do understand maintenance. Especially on older planes.
I feel your frustration I have had similar reactions from people I have dealt with in the past .MAJOR bummer . But like you said maybe he will see the light when he actually try's to start going thru with getting them up and running again .
Hey Jimmy i swear i saw you out in front of the hangar outside the south lakeland grass strip while driving home. Was going to say hi but had places to go lol
After sizing up the Planes, enough is known. Once getting back to Florida, the Seller lost his bargaining edge and will need to offer a Sweetheart Deal to bring you back. He should have realized his position and done the right thing when he had a chance. Planes seem to have a Love Affair with Owners and parting ways appears emotionally difficult!
Well Jimmy, lots of stuff going on there as you know. If I was you I would do this and that and what the heck I don't know what I'm talking about. 😄 Enjoyed the show take care of that 310 now. How's your little son coming along by the way. Haven't seen him lately. Tell him I said hi. Keep crunching those numbers. See you down the airways somewhere. Adios
It's going to be one hell of a juggling act to make this all work. for example......low ball the v tail and part it out. could potentially net 20,000 out of that which would pay for crank work on the 310 motors etc, It would be cool to get that 320 flying again. (i once co-owned a 1959 310, wanted to trade up to a 320 or 340, Never got the chance) but parting that out could bring in more $$$ for the 411/310 project. Have you looked into starting a small restoration foundation and enlist help from retired aircraft mechanics. I'm not from Florida, but I believe there is a small community of retired people in Fla. Lots of interesting possibilities here, but you are correct....know when to walk away.
Not my cup of tea but the VTail is a bucket list plane for collectors and they look real nice in polished aluminum.... that one is worth it. 1 engine, no turbos, no biggie... maybe the electric prop that is a cool thing too.
WOW! Some people don’t keep up with the price of airplane parts and ad’s. I’ve looked at an old Bonanza that had corrosion like that, you are pretty close on your guesses. That plane isn’t worth but about 8 to 10 k…
He's about to be 88/89. It's never going to be done. He'll call you back in 6 months. I get that old fella's , especially when still sound of mind, expects to keep up with their younger years, even 5 years ago, but no. Look at those things. nothing is changing in the next 90 days. Aspirational plans don't connect with reality at that age. It looks like he's had a good life though. I hope he has a ton of great memories and a loving family, but those things aren't flying under his stewardship again. You should however buy that ford F150 thing. THATS worth saving.
Seller reminds me of a co-worker i had who owned a Bonanza and kept it in a hanger costing him $250 a month and had not flown it in over 10 years , out of annual the plane at that time was only worth 40k in flying condition which his no longer was and the guy had spent 30k in hanger rent instead of just selling it off. I think the emotional attachment also plays a part , interesting to see all these planes rotting at these airports cause of guys like this.
There's another 310 for sale in Upland (30 minutes away). Claims to have only 600 hours on both engines. 1,600 total hours and only needs a little work. Seems priced reasonable too.
@@howdrums909 your words are accurate. All used planes advertised for sale need a little work. If they don't need work, they sell without being advertised.
Holy cow Jimmy We used to call the v tail the doctor killer so you could call it Doctor Who In the future that gentleman might not be around. But I love 310mm Best luck 🍀 from Australia 🇦🇺.
Man it's wild how many times I've seen this same scenario. Old guy with a rotting airplane that thinks it's worth a fortune, and it's only an annual away from bringing top dollar. Based on my experience, those things will never move from those hangars. Unfortunately they can't all fly. LOVE the channel though, keep it up!
When I see a video like this it just reminds me why there is no hanger space available anyplace in the country. Far too many have also been turned in storage units!
I'm amazed at how many people have airplanes parked in hangars and on the ramp for 10-20 years. Aren't they paying fees/rent that whole time? Not to mention insurance.
Money is no object for some people... at least that level of money. Plus the power of self-deception and denial ("I'll fix all of those as soon as my back is better" and "It's only been in storage for three years.").
Cessna 320, different type certificate than Cessna 310…same TC as Cessna 340. TSIO-470 not supported very well if I recall. And then there’s the exhaust issues… And that’s not a “checkup” on the crankshafts, it’s replacement.
You dodged a bullet on this deal. Count your blessings and keep moving forward

Put some tires on it and do a couple of fast taxi runs. That seems to work. LOL I mean what could go wrong? 😝
I"m glad you got someone going over the airplanes with you instead of others I've seen.
Not to mention he's got 4 of them, none of them flying. That's not a bunch of project planes at that point, that's a problem that needs solved.
@@Orzorn you are absolutely right, and all cost money.
That seller sounded really confused about his crafts. Like Jims wise comment on when to walk away. Smart man (most of the time).
Howdy,
I thought you got lost, missed you the past week. Can't wait to see the 310 in the sky.
You are crazy pilot and I like it . Keep it up buddy . Here is comment for the UA-cam algorithm. 👌🏼
Happy Birthday Old Man! I turned 56 in March and the years of treating my body like a stuntman has caught up to me. Enjoy your birthday!
Great vlog! Great prop wash ! Thanks Jimmy!
Marty I’ll take three, where do I sign?!😂
411 were maintenance nightmares when regularly flown 30years ago. 320, kinda rare, kinda cool. Bonanza is good for parts, you’ve already got 1 old 310….
How many times did you get divorced... last week?
You must be killing her with all the aircrafts! Love the effort!
And save the 310!
Gotta make sense!! Good for you Jimmy! I'll stay tuned.
Decided to watch again.....allready. ...love to see a man avoid bankruptcy...... and his son needs dad a few more years yet.
Jimmy, you sure know how to have fun and spend money! Good luck with your purchases.
Hey, Jimmy ... you're a lucky man! But please use a shop rag or paper towel when checking the oil. Thank you!
I'm loving the 411 and the 320... forget the rest ! I say keep chipping away on the 310 you have now.
It's amazing to consider that the Bonanza is worth about as much in used control surfaces as it would be as a flying airplane. That's the current reality of magnesium.
The Vee tail has a poor reputation for safety as well.
@@chuckschultz7028 that's a myth
Buddy Holly agrees.
@@chuckschultz7028 no, it does not.
@@thomas7770 buddy holly’s pilot took off at night, was not night rated, and hit the ground. The airplane did exactly what he commanded it to do.
Glad you walked away. There are so many "Projects" out there, and people think they are worth a fortune.
Good luck Jimmy. Hope you make lots of money on your aircraft. Stay safe.
Jimmy, buy the red beech travel air. It is a beauty!!!!!!!
Jimmy, also buy a hello courier plane. My two favorites.
That 320 looks fast sitting still. It is a beauty!!! But I am just a UA-cam follower so Jimmy, it is up to you!
I've never clicked a video so fast! I always look forward to your content thank you!!!
Tio bad you couldn't make a deal. Hopefully you will later on. Always enjoy your videos. Keep the faith, the 310 will fly again.
I agree strongly, don’t throw away your money man!!
The seller missed a last flight by 7 years!!!!! Seemingly , he wasn’t coming clean
Have them throw in the old Ford truck! Drive that a bay home and a have a mobile work/tool truck for future Jimmy’s world field trips!!
@4:40 - those are Mccauly Culkin props.. never leave them at home alone.
Actually made me laugh
Everybody: how many more planes are you going to get? JIMMY: yes
Just passed my private pilot checkride. This is the best way to end the day!
Woohoo!!! Congrats!!
Adios
Good to see that you are ok..
LOL Rumor of a "small community of retired people in Florida." Yes, and McDonald's has sold a few dozen burgers.
keep going jimmy you’ll get there mate cheering you on from West Australia 😃😃
Well done, even though the deal didn't go through. Thanks for the education.
You're just a glutton for.punishment Jimmy. Love it!!!
7:30 I like the comedy crime scene movie music in the background expection Danny de Vito to move in any moment.
Someone else mentioned an old warbird restoration would be the go - i agree
hope everything works out with the 310 jimmy, Awesome channel.
There's another 310 for sale in Upland (30 minutes away). Claims to have only 600 hours on both engines. 1,600 total hours and only needs a little work. Seems priced reasonable too.
"only needs a little work" is the key phrase in ads of all airplanes.
@@buckmurdock2500 Those are my words, not in the ad.
The ad is actually more specific.
@@howdrums909 your words are accurate. All used planes advertised for sale need a little work. If they don't need work, they sell without being advertised.
There is a newly listed 310 in Houston just listed in flying condition. Asking $90k. Marketplace Houston.
Holy cow Jimmy
We used to call the v tail the doctor killer so you could call it Doctor Who
In the future that gentleman might not be around. But I love 310mm
Best luck 🍀 from Australia 🇦🇺.
Wish you could have closed the deal, but I agree, if it doesn't make sense financially, its better to walk away for now.
Take the thumps up rule. 👍 I hitchhike from State of Washington to Wisconsin 4 days it took. 🤪
I'm amazed at how many people have airplanes parked in hangars and on the ramp for 10-20 years. Aren't they paying fees/rent that whole time? Not to mention insurance.
I have a friend that has an airplane in storage for over 20 years. He said he gets a good deal.
Just one BIG Money Pit !
Money is no object for some people... at least that level of money.
Plus the power of self-deception and denial ("I'll fix all of those as soon as my back is better" and "It's only been in storage for three years.").
Some people have superfluous money.
@@KutWrite I wish Jimmy well.

Hey Jimmy! I'm new to your channel, loving the videos! #SaveThe310
I thought the seller saying "you showed your true colors" was very insulting. Your restraint on that comment alone was impressive.
Cessna 320, different type certificate than Cessna 310…same TC as Cessna 340. TSIO-470 not supported very well if I recall. And then there’s the exhaust issues…
And that’s not a “checkup” on the crankshafts, it’s replacement.
Wild! Mark used to be my mechanic about 1 million years ago!!! He was a Cessna Factory mechanic before that...
ah and now he's a delusional 88yr old plane junk owner!
