What could possibly go wrong…? Enough to empty a regular person’s bank account! It’s good to be Jimmy! Love the videos Jimmy. You’ve got a great attitude for life!
Hey Jimmy - I used to fly an Aztec and it sometimes had the same problem with kicking back. It was equipped with a "shower of sparks" ignition coil for starting, activated by a separate contact on the starter switch. If the shower of sparks didn't activate, the mag would spark at the advanced timing and cause the engine to kick pack. We ruined one or 2 starters and flywheels that way. In our case, it was just the contact in the starter switch. If you pressed hard on the switch, everything was good. Make sure that the system works before you try again. Love your channel, by the way :)
Wish I was there in Florida I'd love to volunteer my time with ya, I never got my certifications because of financial issues but I completed my airframe courses and started the power plant courses when financing went caput, and now I'm just to danged old to complete the certifications, life just got in the way lol but I love working on airplanes got burnt out on automotive work loved aircraft. Hi Jimmy. I showed your channel to my father, he was a former interflug pilot. He flew the Russian Il-62. He loves your channel. And from me... keep it up, you're funny and your videos are very exciting. Greetings from Germany.
That's the difference between a modern automotive electronically controlled engine verse a mechanically driven one, they are more difficult to start since it doesn't have the electronic flexibility, but are more reliable once started since it has minimum points of failure.
@@mofayer true that. My dad had a 1964 Piper Cherokee 235 back in the early 2000s with an old Lycoming O-540 in it. The engine had a lot of hours on it and we flew it for years putting hundreds of hours on it. Sometimes it would take 5-10 minutes to get it running but once it was running, it never shut off once until he told it to haha
"What could go wrong" should be a new merch slogan.😁 And, in aviation it isn't called a hammer, it's a fine adjustment tool. Works like this 1 If it doesn't work use fine adjustment tool 2 if it still doesn't work use adjustment tool a bit harder 3 If it still doesn't work you "adjusted" it too much, replace it.
The right hand engine sounds like the ignition timing is over advanced, the way it was kicking back against the starter when it was firing. So check it before attempting to start it again. What a generous gift for the kids Jimmy and great videos. 👍
The timing is fixed. So there is no timing advance unit. The engine will always be starting in an advanced state. That's why a lot of planes "start hard." I think it started hard because he didn't have a battery in it. Even though he had a "jump" that is not how you should start it.
@@mikegoodman447 Hi Mike. The new engine didn't have the same issue when being started for the very first time, jumped from the same source. That only leaves the starter, either worn or loose, starter or earth cable have a resistance.
@@martin4787 A car starts typically around just a few degrees advanced. The mag system they use is fixed at around 22 degrees or so. When everything is just right fuel mixture and such the engine will want to bust off just as soon as the spark gets there. If the timing was way off the thing would have broken way before this.

A commenter has already suggested we check the timing on #2 engine. If the mags have impulse couplings on one or both, stuck weights on the impulse couplings could also be a culprit. Some engines had impulse couplings on a single mag, and you started on that mag only, selecting the 2nd mag once the engine was running. Just some thoughts. Very entertaining! Treat that fresh #1 motor carefully, with a good break-in routine.
