    Thank you, Robert. I am a novice in this field, and I am trying to view all yours videos regarding the 4L60E to understand possible issues (hard shifts from 1-2) I've been having with my transmission. Your videos are very descriptive and informative. Thank you for your time and dedication.

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому +5

      A hard 1-2 up-shift can be caused by a number of things.
      Example:
      A broken accumulator spring will create this condition. The spring assists the accumulator piston, and is used to cushion the oil that's sent to the 2nd apply piston, on the 2-4 Servo. When the spring breaks, there's no longer a cushioning affect. The incoming 2nd gear oil slams the accumulator piston, and bang...
      We've had a number of people asking about this exact same condition.
      When time permits, we will dedicate a video to this topic.
      Stay tuned!

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому

      "no speedometer"
      An inoperable speedo (believe it or not) will cause a no up-shift condition. The PCM (computer) needs to "see" the vehicle speed, in order to determine when to up-shift the transmission. If the speedo is not working, the PCM is unable to determine vehicle speed...and will not command the trans to shift.
      "only getting 1st gear no 2nd"
      Which position is the shifter in, in order for you to get these 2 gears?
      For example:
      Shifter in OD (or D) position? And trans automatically shifts from 1st to 2nd gear?
      Or do you have to manually shift the trans? Shift from Park to D1, and then up-shift manually to D2?
      No 3rd or 4th gear:
      I have questions about this, too. But, I'll wait to respond to my other questions, first.

    Hello!
    Awesome content and knowledge.
    We have a Mitsubishi Rosa bus with an aisin sieki automatic and are on the diagnosis train trying to figure out why in D it won’t take off (feels like it’s slipping) but when you select L it takes off but then won’t go up into any other gears when selecting anything other than L. Under the pan there are 4 solenoids, I believe 2 are for shift, 1 is lockup and the other is selection. Was going to replace all 4 or maybe the neutral switch? Or everything?

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому

      I'm not familiar with that transmission.
      Generally speaking, when a trans is shifted into Manual Low, the trans will apply an extra clutch, and it will increase Line Pressure.
      Extra Clutch:
      This is used to do two things;
      1). Increase clutch capacity. Trans can now withstand more torque/load, before transmission slips.
      2). Create engine braking (deceleration).
      Line Pressure:
      By increasing line pressure, it enables that clutches to withstand more torque/load, before they slip (burn up).
      What does the fluid look/smell like?

    I just rebuilt a 60e that has no 1st gear. Have dropped VB and verified solenoids, valve and spring move in bore; all good. What I did discover was the 3-4 shift valve/spring was in backwards. Not an expert in the fluid flow, but could this cause no 1st?

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  2 місяці тому

      Good eye! It definitely will.
      If you don't already know, the 1-2 signal oil pressure is used for both shift valves (1-2 & 3-4). It's a shared oil circuit.
      With the 3-4 shift valve installed backwards, it will let the 1-2 Signal Oil pressure exhaust or bleed off...resulting in no signal oil pressure for the 1-2 shift valve or the 3-4 shift valve. This mimics 2nd gear. It's as though the 1-2 shift solenoid is off/de-energized (valve open, bleeding off signal oil pressure).
      Great question, Steve.
      Once again, good eye.

    I have a 2003 yukon denali that has a po751 code. The transmission will shift fine when the fluid is cold. As soon as the transmission temps get to normal operating range I would lose all forward and reverse gear. I can then cut the vehicle off for about 5 mins and crank it to get back home. Could this possibly be the shift solenoid?

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому

      It does not sound like a shift solenoid failure. When they fail, you'll lose some gears, but not all of the gears.
      Sounds like a plugged oil filter.
      Is the trans experiencing other issues?
      Was it experiencing weird shifting (slipping)?

    Can u please show an explain how it shifts to 3rd. I know the pcm turns both shift solenoids off but I’m concerned with how the fluid flows to shift it into 3rd. I explained on one of your other videos how my mechanic is saying the I have something blocking the flow of fluid not allowing my transmission to shift to 3rd. He says valve body looks good an that he needs to rebuild transmission to fix issue. I’m wondering where the blockage could possibly be to cause 1st and 2nd to work fine but not shift to 3rd or 4th. Scanner says everything electronically is working correctly and that the pcm is getting the command to shift but it’s not shifting. I feel like I should be able to fix issue without doing a complete rebuild. Please advise an do a video because I know a lot of others that are having the same issue. Clutch’s and all are good also. I’m also curious as to where dose the fluid go when it leaves the solenoid? An how dose the fluid actually make the transmission shift

      The parking mechanism on the 4L60E is pretty basic, and pretty hard to mess up (during a rebuild). If the trans was recently rebuilt, then there may be an issue with assembly (anything is possible). However, if the trans was not recently rebuilt, a few things are coming to mind.
      1). A faulty shift interlock solenoid.
      2). A faulty brake pedal switch.
      3). Faulty wiring/connections for either the solenoid or the switch.
      4). Switch could be misadjusted.
      5). Blown fuse.
      6). Etc.
      The engineers at GM don't want the driver to be able to shift the trans from Park to Reverse/Drive, without the brake pedal depressed...for safety reasons. This is why the shift interlock solenoid is used.
      The shift interlock solenoid prevents the shifter from moving out of Park until it "sees" that the brake pedal is being pushed down. So, not only does the interlock solenoid need to be in good shape, but the brake pedal switch must be in good working order, too.
      The condition you've mentioned has me leaning towards the things listed above. Just sharing my thoughts, as a courtesy. Do what I do at your own risk.
      Hope this helps.

      Thanks a bunch for the reply.The transmission hasn't been rebuilt, about 240K miles on it. just decided to lock up out of the blue.
      I've replaced all common parts I think.
      New brake light switch
      New ignition switch
      New Shift Interlock Solenoid
      New Neutral Safety switch
      New Gear Shift Cable
      New Column Shift Mechanism
      New Position Pressure Switch
      Dropped the pan 3 times and can pry on the park pawl to release it to be able to shift it by hand
      but when I put it back together and and put fluid in it. and start it, it just gets stuck again.
      I'm at a loss, determined its something internal, idk.
      Quick question If i pull the linkage off the transmission, should I be able to shift it by hand from under the truck(it will not), could it be something internal?
      I do need to adjust Shift Interlock Solenoid maybe that's it. PRND321 lines up when I shift it from the column.
      I'll update if I figure it out lol, Thanks again.

      Regarding your question...
      Yes, you should be able to shift it by hand...as long as the shift lever is still bolted to the shift shaft (on the trans). There's a nut (13mm or 15mm) that secures this lever. With that lever bolted to the trans, you should be able to shift the trans by hand. If you've removed this lever, then it will be really hard to shift trans (because you have now have no leverage).
      I'm assembling a 4L60E this week. If time permits, I'll see about shooting a short video of what I am talking about.

      Thank you, it will not shift by hand after popping off the shifting cable, would be great to know what would cause the parking pawl to get stuck in park.

    I'm having issues and have watched your videos on the 4l60e but can't find anything that might be the source of my issue.
    I have a 94 4l60e out of a z71 Silverado and I am missing second gear only. Just recently rebuilt the 3-4 clutches and still had 2nd gear until 2 months later. Also I think this is a separate issue but 4th gear does not drop the motor into rpms it's supposed to, example: at 70mph I'm normally sitting at 2,000 rpms but now I sit at 2,500 rpms and this issue came up about two months into driving without 2nd gear. This is my only vehicle so I don't really have a choice but to continue driving. Any help is appreciated!!! I love this channel

      It sounds like the 2-4 Band is not holding. It wraps around a drum. When the band is applied, it prevents the drum from rotating, which has positive effects on the planetary gear set.
      The 2-4 Servo applies the band, in both 2nd gear and 4th gear.
      The servo is equipped with two different pistons, that are two different diameters.
      In 2nd gear, the 2nd apply piston pushes the servo towards the band, applying the band.
      In 4th gear, the 2nd & 4th apply pistons work together to apply the band.
      When repairing the trans, did you remove the 2-4 Servo from the side of the transmission case?

      When the trans attempts to up-shift from 2nd gear to 3rd gear, does the trans stay stuck in 2nd gear?
      Or, does the trans feel like it went into Neutral? Engine revs up, but the truck "stops pulling?"

      Based off of the info you've provided...sounds like the 3-4 Clutch failed. This is a common failure point on this trans.
      If the 3-4 Clutch is smoked, then the trans has to be opened up, and the clutches (among other things) need to be replaced.
      A shift solenoid will not cause this particular problem. This issue can be caused by a number of issues within the trans (and even some stuff outside of the trans). I'll be putting together a video on this topic...when time permits.

      Industry standard is to replace both solenoids anyway. You'll thank yourself later. Test ohms with multimeter 20-30 ohms, ohms should climb fairly fast otherwise its lazy and bad. Also make sure they actuate with a 9 volt battery before installing. They are at rear of transmission btw.

    I removed my 1-2 accumulator but I can't get my EPC solenoid off. It's comes almost all the way out of the whole but not completely out. And my EPC solenoid is also called a pressure control solenoid on my 2007 H3 Hummer. Help please 🥺

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому

      Sounds like you should be good to go.
      Note: EPC stands for Electronic Pressure Control.
      As long as everything is removed, the solenoid should come right out of the bore.
      Removal:
      Remove 1-2 Accumulator (3 bolts)(10mm socket).
      Disconnect electrical harness from EPC Solenoid. (two different styles of connector).
      Remove EPC Solenoid bracket and bolt (8mm or 5/16" socket).
      Pull EPC Solenoid from valve-body bore.
      I've got a 4L60E handy. I will go take a look, and see what might hold up the removal of the solenoid...and fire back.

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому

      I took a look at the 4L60E I've got handy. The valve-body is currently removed from the transmission case. With the bolt/bracket removed, the solenoid comes right out, no problem.
      Cocked in Bore:
      After playing with it, I was able to make it stick in the bore. As the solenoid starts to come out the bore, it is possible to inadvertently lean the solenoid (left/right, up/down) and it'll get caught in the bore.
      Might try wiggling while gently pulling.
      Contaminated:
      The end of the solenoid could be contaminated with debris. These parts are a tight fit, and debris can easily jamb things up. In that case, some brake parts cleaner could help flush out any debris. Might need to shoot a little lube in the bore (ATF, WD, etc), after flushing with brake cleaner.

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  7 місяців тому +1

      Could be a couple things...
      When the trans should shift from 2nd up to 3rd gear, what happens?
      When it tries to up-shift does it feel like the trans goes into neutral (engine revs up, and vehicle coasts)?
      Or...
      Does it simply stay stuck in 2nd gear (engine RPMs climb as vehicle continues to accelerate)?

    • @codyfarmer6678
      @codyfarmer6678 7 місяців тому

      @@SouthpawAutoworksit just stays in 2nd and rpm’s climb. Although it downshifts back to 1st fine when you slow down. And all other gears work fine. Park, 1-2 , Rev, neutral.

      @SouthpawAutoworks  7 місяців тому +1

      Based off of your response (trans is not slipping....just won't up-shift), it sounds like it could be an issue with the solenoid (2-3 shift solenoid).
      Note: The 2-3 Shift Solenoid is often times referred to as Shift Solenoid B.
      It could be plugged (with debris).
      Per the video, when the solenoid is energized (or turned ON), the solenoid's internal valve closes. This traps incoming oil, which builds oil pressure, which has a positive effect on the valve train.
      When the solenoid is de-energized (or turned OFF), the internal valve opens, allowing the oil to escape/exhaust, which let's the oil pressure bleed off.
      However, if the solenoid's internal hydraulic circuit is plugged, the oil pressure can't bleed off. So, even though the solenoid has been turned OFF, it still behaves as though it is ON.
      Both shift solenoids have a "firing order".
      2-3 Shift Solenoid:
      1st gear: ON
      2nd gear: ON
      3rd gear: OFF
      4th gear: OFF
      In order for 3rd and 4th gear to occur, on the 4L60E, the solenoid must turn OFF electrically....and bleed oil pressure hydraulically.
      Is this making any sense?
      Let me know what questions you have.
