- The Scirocco 16v was the first true performance car I could actually afford. I felt so lucky have one. People would frequently ask, "is that a Delorean? Looking fantastic and performing far better than the numbers would suggest this was the car that turned me from regular human being into an unqualified enthusiast. The 16v was a special car assembled at Karmann Coachworks. Replaced by the Corrado there was really nothing quite like the Scirocco 16v. I hope you enjoy this review. What was the first performance car you owned? The first one you could afford. More to come. Cheers!
Loved your inputs man! Just one thing to add. 139hp engines aren’t 2.0 liter! They are the same size as 129hp. ( 1.8L) with catalytic converter! I guess cat reduces the horse power by negligible amount!
Doing my own 1985 Scirocco restoration - one owner (me). Long live the Scirocco.
Wow. Fantastic to hear there is still a one owner Scirocco out there. Long live these cars indeed!
Thanks! I'm just getting started. Finding some parts are hard to come by..
The roof gutters are no where to be found, rear window seals are unobtainable , lots of things are just impossible to find
Great vid. One thing about the rear wing though, during testing they found the car would lift leaving the rear a bit wobbly and light at regular highway speeds, so they added a wing. It definitely serves it's purpose
Once you see one without it, man is it tempting. Similar thing on the mk1 TT. They look so concept car without the rear wing
at 19, my first first car was an 87 16v. had fun with and learned how to work on it. I bolted on neuspeed front and rear stress bars and tokico adjustable shocks. those upgrades made the car handle like a go cart.
Good old memories...
Your passion for the scirocco shows. Guys like you are fun to talk to about these cars because you "get it". I feel the same way about my corrados.
Thanks so much for your comment Jon! I have had several Corrados and in my most recent Garage Talk video it is one of my recommended “buy this car now” cars. They are pretty special. Love the early 12v VR6 . Enjoy your Corrado, you are in rare company. Cheers !
I want it! lol.I had an 82 and 76 when I was a lad.Always wanted the 16v
Thanks for watching. The 16v still manages to put a smile on my face each time I drive it. Cheers!
I have been driving a mk2 Scirocco since 1985. Still have two, a 1987 GTX and a 1992 Scala - both 112hp. Totally reliable, maxed on the German autobahn indicated 125mph. I visited the Karmann factory in 1990, given the full tour and went around the private museum. The best car I have ever driven.
@@ROBERTHAWKINS-s1d Karmann tour? Wow. That would have been absolutely incredible especially in 1990 in the heyday! Enjoy your Scirocco! Thanks for watching
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage I went through the factory from the design office to the final testing of completed cars. Unlike Wolfsburg, Karmann allowed groups to rub shoulders with the assembly workers as they did the tour. Turning up in my red GTX they said they could tell I loved the car, so allowed me to see all the cars in the private museum, not open to the public. A family business that appreciated the customer choosing a Scirocco over the very common Golf. In the UK pretty much every time I go out in a Scirocco someone takes photos and chats to me. Even young people see it as a cool cult car. To me it was my first GTI that I still have. No power steering, light weight with a punchy engine that sips fuel and always great to drive.
Hey I you might not see this but I wanted to say that I have a 1986 scirocco witch me and my dad built up and it’s around 270 horse power and it’s something I’m proud of because my dad past away and it’s a big part of my life now
Tyson, so sorry to hear about your dad passing away. Beautiful that you have those memories. Enjoy your car!! Cheers!
Totally agree. Such a funnnnn car to drive. I got lucky and picked one up five years ago in superb condition for $2800 Canadian dollars. If you are looking to buy one find a parts car. There were only 290,000 built over a 10 year run. They only sold in the US to 1988. In Canada through 1989. In Europe through 1992. That’s not many units over that stretch. Most were sold in Europe. Mine is a 8v 1.8 with 90hp. That is the same engine that was in the mk1 GTI, one of the most sought after VWs. I get regular thumbs up from other drivers. This is a rare automobile. I have seen just one in about 15 years on the road. Great review. I had a 1987 16v in the late eighties and it was spectacular. The eight valves are certainly easier to find engine parts for. Glad you got your dream Scirroco. I got mine and it is never leaving me.
Great buy!! Enjoy it and thanks for watching !
I've owned my 87' 16v since 2000. Fell in love with them in High School and wanted one ever since. My wife worked for a car dealership and one day said to me, "I think there is one of those cars you like at a small lot we do business with." It was all downhill after that. I replaced the 1.8L with a 2.0L and made suspension and brake upgrades along the way. Had a custom exhaust installed as well. Love that crazy car and it has been my daily driver for the duration. It is starting to show its age as I just had to replace the ignition/steering lock assembly. Much harder to find parts these days, may have to start shopping in the UK. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm, it is one of those cars that people get excited about even today.
I sold my 88 Scirocco 8 years ago because of too many projects. I didnt realize how much I would miss it until it was gone. I am a VW fanboy and have been for my whole life. 1 month ago to person I sold my Scirocco to ask me if I wanted it back. It is back were it belongs. A few more weeks and I will have it done and on the road.
Dirt Digger oh man, that is a rad story! There isn’t anything out there exactly like it. It’s a sexy hot hatch and a party that few cars can replicate. Congrats on getting it back. Thanks for watching !!
That's awesome!
@Tim's Enthusiast Garage I could not get my scirocco to run perfectly because of some fueling issues. About a month ago I removed the factory spark amd fuel system and went with a microsquirt setup. What a difference!
My first car was a Mk1, I've had 3 Mk2's thru the years and just picked up an '84 for my Son's first car. Everything you say in this video is spot on.
I ❤ these things!
@@ChrisMoyer-p6h thanks for watching ! These cars are so good
One of my favorite cars ever! It was the best! Sorry I don't have it now. I am 57 years old now......looking to buy one in 2021! Loved this car!
I wish you luck finding a good one. I still see deals on these from time to time. I put hundreds of miles on mine over the past few months and it was just so enjoyable. I love. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Great review and very glad to see all the enthusiasts and especially fellow 16V owners' responses here! I am the original owner of my '88 Scirocco 16V - I almost didn't get one as the dealer in Dallas sold their last one on the lot out from under me...thankfully they rounded one up from San Antonio. It is still the most fun car I've driven and is my daily (when not in quarantine).
I LOVE that you have had a Scirocco 16v since 88. Wow. What a car to get to own from new!! Cheers and thanks for watching!
Great video! I've owned my 87 16V since 1993 and my absolute favorite car in the world and never parting with it.
So good to hear from someone else passionate about 16v Sciroccos !! Thanks for watching
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage My other weird, quirky car is a MK2 TTRS 5cyl turbo w/manual trans. Very misunderstood special car that gets ignored.
@@danielwolfson7540 I love those. The spirit of the Ur Quattro but with modern touches
Two of my favourite cars, the 16V Scirocco and the Porsche 944 👍👍
C C I agree. The 944 is so beautiful and underrated by collectors currently. Thanks for watching !!
Very similar driving cars. They actually share a large number of parts. Both are super fun to drive.
@@jimmhb1986 one is front wheel drive the other is rear wheel drive with nearly 50%:50% weight distribution. How are they similar??
I drove one of these back in the early 70’s and I still remember how it felt. I was blown away the pep and the handling of this thing. I thought they were ugly (and still do) but still wanted one.
rainman the Scirocco 1 was ahead of it’s time!
Tim's Enthusiast Garage I agree. ‘75 was the year I drove one of these. Impressive!!
I've got an 85 8v that I've had for years and years theres just something about it that I absolutely love.
It’s raw and unfiltered. Light cars like this feel great!
I have got one 83 gti, there was wing on it I took it away, looks like the red one from this video. It is easy to maintain, really cheap service, put good oil and be sure that the vacuum system is sealed well, not dirty fuel filter and it will take you anywhere.
Awesome episode ❤️ I need to show my scirocco some love🥰 they truly are amazingly fun cars to drive
Yes. I actually forgot you still had that and the 928 until I saw them in a post recently
Mine was the Scirocco Mk1 1978. I was in my mid 20’s than. Put a 1.8 GTI motor in it, a Neuspeed cam and Koni adjustable struts with Neuspeed sport springs. 25mm and 28mm Neuspeed sway bars and engine strut brace. Tech Tuning exhaust to let it breathe. Straight pipe in place of the converter really helped, I wouldn’t do that now. You could find me on mulholland drive on Friday nights. That car could out handle any Mk2 16v scirocco back than. I did get a beautiful black 16v scirocco next. Kept that till a couple of years ago. Sold that one in perfect shape for 2700.00. I sold it way to low. Now I own three Mk1 Scirocco’s. 80 standard Scirocco model in forest green. 81 Scirocco model S light metallic blue, and a 81 Mars red Scirocco Model S. I love these cars. They aren’t in perfect shape, but not rust buckets either. I’ll put up a video on them soon. As Magnus Walker says “more smiles per mile”.
Thanks so much for watching. I BADLY want a mk1 Rocco but man. They are nearly impossible to find. Most are super modded or seriously rusty. Living in LA with a mk1 or mk2 vw is about as good as it gets. Cheers and thanks for sharing about your cars!!
thank you so much for this video. brings back many memories. now i will search for another. long live the scirocco !
Thanks for your comment !! Good luck on your search . They are out there. Cheers !!

You are a RARE example of an american car reviewer that I can actually listen to xD You know what would be cool to see you tho? Review the mk3 scirocco, the one that never came to US, I wonder how would you compare mk3 to mk2 :D Liked and subscribed
Thank you so much for your comment! Last time I was at the Nurburgring I almost drove one. I drove the Megan RS instead. I had planned to Germany and Switzerland later this summer but with all that is going on I am not sure that it will still happen. I would very much love to review one. I’m sure I would love it. I owned a mk6 golf R from new for about 6 years. Brilliant car. Again, thanks so much for watching and for subscribing to the channel. Cheers!!
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage I have the scirocco mk3 (its diesel because I do a lot of mileage, but still.. :S), they say that the megane RS is just a tiny bit sharper to drive. VW to me is the definition of having fun without going fast, fun little cars for sure :D ..Yeah, the world has gone mad lately, I had planned to go to nurburgring this year too and also worthersee, but thats not gonna happen :( Thank you for feedback, cheers!! :D
Grega your car sounds great. Diesel and VW means it’s still a party to drive. They have always done Tdi properly. As far as the Scirocco mk3 vs the Megane, I’m sure the VW is a great trade off. That Renault was almost gt3 stiff and very unforgiving. I am confident the Scirocco would be a perfect compromise. Cheers!
Good thing about the wing is, when pushing it down an autobahn at speed in the rain , you don't need to use your rear wiper at all. Therefore it shows it does something .
Best 2 cars I've ever owned.
Mo Mozza nice !!
I have one of the first, a pre body kit 1.6 8v 1982 GL Auto in near perfect original condition, diamond silver original paintwork, just 50k on the clock. It still put's a big smile on my face every time! 😁 Floor it, the auto box kicks down and gives even modern day cars a surprise. I frequently get the Delorian remark too.
Yes, I was lucky enough to have this as my very first car back in 91. Now, only 2 left of this spec on the road in the UK.
Keep posting Tim, that is one tidy ride!👍
Brilliant ride! Thanks for your comment my friend.
In the whole GB only 2 left? Are you serious? They are rare, but only 2,wau! It is so unbelievable to hear that and that's why I am writing from a surprise. I have one 1983 gti like 250 k, but it drives same like before and it still consumes just the same like before engine oil, so, just for you to know they are crazy cars, stay the same somehow. I recommend you to wax all parts where you may reach with a small tube, the bottom parts first 15 cm height. Other than that no problems are to foresee. Have a good drive.
Awesome looking and fun car with a honest review! Nice job Tim!
Thanks so much for watching!
Completely understand how you feel on cars like this. Though I got into them much later in life, my Merkur phase feels a lot like your VW history. Additionally, as always.. way better to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow! ;)
Lucore Auto and LucoreRacing yes! Slow car fast is the truth. Thanks for watching my friend.
I’m the original owner of one. Same color, Flashsilver. And just like him, I’ve added the stuff I couldn’t afford when I was 16, like Euro bumpers. Still looks great. I have over 300k miles. It sits in the garage while my 2018 M3 sits outside.
That’s an awesome duo. I love the car. Would never part with it now
You are a likeable person, you speak realisticly. As you say, you must like it and if you like it you will buy it in any condition and start fixing it for yourself. Your Scirocco is very nice, 16v gives it a bit more, enough to notice the fun. Happy drive.
Cheers and thanks so much for watching!
New subscriber -had a champagne Scirocco.Solid fun car .Great videos.Cheers.BSR.
Thanks for watching AND subscribing. These are super fun. So many people miss out on that by simply having never even known these exist. Cheap to run and a riot to drive. Cheers!
Hi Tim,
Congratulations for your 16V- in this fantastic condition. And as we say in Germany: 'Volle Hütte' ... this means, the car has got every extra item (like leather seats, AC ...). German (European) Sciroccos are mostly without these.
My own 1990 Scirocco 16V has electric power windows. Better than nothing :o)
But everytime i drive it, it's a little bit like 'Back in the 80's' ... you know what i mean!
BTW: the Scirocco was NOT replaced by the Corrado. Both Cars are build as independent ones from 1988- 1992 (when VW stopped building the Scirocco).
Greetings from Germany
Stefan
P.s. Oh, and before i forget:
Scirocco 16V (in fantastic condition) - worth ~ US$ 15000
The look on your face when you spot the sheriff - priceless!
Hahaha! Rock'n Roll dude!
TheRealSciroccoman thanks so much for your comment! Yes! Nothing beats the nostalgia that comes with driving this car. Your car looks amazing from looking at your UA-cam profile picture. I had planned to be back at the Nurburgring this summer but with the way things are right now I am not sure I will be able to make the trip to Germany or anywhere. Thanks so much for your comment and for watching . Cheers!
And in the past 6 months, we've seen 3 - 16'vs sell for $26k, $28k and $32k at the auction! Going up in value now! wooohooo!!!
I've got a 1985 (non 16V) that I just started restoring. I'm the original owner. Finding it hard to locate some parts.
@@ParksandRecYT I wish you good luck and a lot of patience in restoring that nice car. I also have one and I did not invest in its outside look and at one spot down just 15 cm from the front wheel got rust and I do not know how to deal with it professionally as that part was used to put jack under it and is smashed now. I would like if you could share some material from Restauration or if you have a yt video how can I find it? It would be cool on yt to see it. Best of luck.
The 1st gen Neon ACRs were a similar car, in that they were "throwaway" cars. $14k, and when it was done you threw it away. It got a bad wrap because no one ever replaced the timing belts, until after it broke. Then it was too expensive to fix vs. what it blue booked at. If you took care of them, they were a great driver's car. But now it's getting hard to find parts.
About 5 years ago I had a chance to drive a really low mile ACR. It's a shame people don't see more value in light weight cars like this. That was a proper performer to be sure. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment.
Just started to restore my 1985. I'm the only owner and its sat for the last 15 years. Just getting going.
Nice video. I had 3 scirocco's from 86 to 97 , I loved them. 2 were 1982 Silver/Blue "Cosmos silver" and then a 1987 White 16V ...I drove the 16v all the way to 97. Great cars but expensive to fix. I still have the original dealer brochures for them.
Yes, owning VW and Audi of this period made owning exotics very low cost 🤣. No kidding this is the car I have spent the most on in the last 12 months.
My 1stcar was an 86 scirocco. Been hooked every since
Nice! Thanks for watching 🙏
I am pick ing up my 4/87 next week!
Can't wait! Ive ot a 6/87 shell from cali with no rust to have for parts.. Came with extra transmissions and parts and engine blocks.
Never had a 16v.. Wife had the 96 vr6 jetta was sweet.

you cant even compare the euro spec anything to what we got here. Everything we got was watered down. That being said, I've owned 5 of them. You're so right. Those were special cars. All of them 16v cars. Well at least the early ones.
Great video Tim. Butmods wise, add a KR 16v intake manifold. It's from the euro version of the 16v KR engine. Not the slower PL engine.

I so miss my '88 16v scirocco
Not sure why but the front-end of this car gives me a heavy DeLorean vibe.
I frequently get people asking me if it is a Delorean. That’s no bad thing. Those cars are icons. Thanks for watching!!
It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the same guy who designed the Delorean and some of the most iconic cars of the 80's. Still to this day I believe Giugiaro's designs are some of the boldest and most beautiful in automotive history.
@@seagullsays5831 Ahhh, that makes since! He also designed the SVX, which I owned a few of. Beautifully designed cars!

Scirocco's weren't from Wolfsburg, they were from Osnabruck. The cylinder head was a Volkswagen design; The Oettinger head was completely different.
Bodies left the Wolfsburg plant for final assembly at Karmann. Oettinger did the design of the head for Volkswagen. Facts ;) thanks for watching and for your passion toward the VW brand. Cheers!
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage NOT true. The floorpan of a two-door European golf would occasionally be shunted off to a truck in Wolfsburg, and it would be moved to Osnabruck so that a Scirocco or Cabriolet body could be installed. And that head is INDEED 100% Volkswagen; The earlier aftermarket Oettinger head has the timing belt driving both cams, look it up uhmm...Facts. [Hello?] The 16 valve EA827 engine used in the Scirocco uses a small chain to drive the intake cam. The exhaust valves on an early EA827 4 valve engine are in the same location on a VW head as the EA827 2 valve, the Oettinger head has them slightly reclined like Toyota's 16 valve 1.5 liter engine used in the '80s MR2 and AE86. Cheers right back and be safe, but you have your facts confused.

Borbet type C
Certainly your Mk2 looks less VWish than anything else at the time, but the Mk2 gained a couple hundred pounds over the Mk1, and the Corrado gained SEVERAL hundred pounds more, and the Audi TT, which was the closest natural successor gained several hundred more pounds, to the point where the TT Mk1 is ~1400lbs. more than the Sirocco Mk1, and while the lbs./hp ratio did improve across all these cars, you're right, you can't get away from the effects of mass when it comes to handling.
Thanks for watching and for your comment! I owned and drove TTs for about 8 years. I still really like them. They offer a lot of experience for the money. They are NOT light that is for sure. I have driven a mk1 and loved it. Sadly, I have never seen a rust free example come up for sale when I was looking to fill a spot in the garage. Lightness is one of the best sporting car attributes in my opinion, so one is still on the list. Cheers!
