One thing that Starblade got right: very few space shooters even try to make the player feel like part of a complex mission or part of a larger force. Beyond Starblade and Silpheed: The Lost Planet, very few shooters have that mission based detail.
It's the constant radio chatter, the sci-fi looking HUD elements, the way enemy fighters move in groups. It's such a special feeling that like you said, very few games are able to capture.
The arcade version with the sitdown cabinet blew my mind back in the day.. the screen had this curved distortion, and that combined with the sound.. really made it immersive. Clealy Star Fox was heavily inspired by it.
So Cinematic. Its like Captain Power and the Last Starfighter. I'm sure a good deal of this is pre rendered. But it does a good job blending the visuals. The Accent to the power core at 11:55 is particularly great.
This is not a StarFox knock-off. The arcade version of this game (basically the same but with higher resolution graphics and less detailed texture maps) was released in 1991. StarFox was released in 1993. If this game could be said to be a knock-off of anything it'd be the 1983 Star Wars game from Atari, although StarBlade adds a lot to that formula.
No, not a StarFox knock-off, but you can bet that Argonaut Software was heavily influenced by this game. There are a number of parts of the game that always felt like they were lifted directly from StarBlade to me; everything from discreet elements to whole stages.
I always wanted this, as I loved the arcade version. Always knew it wouldn't be that good without the bending-projection screen and the pumped-up sound (the speech in this game is TERRIBLE but in the arcade you couldn't hear what they were saying really)
I've been really wanting this game but it's so insanely expensive on Ebay now, I've noticed. The 3DO version seems to be much cheaper by comparison so I may get it if I ever find a Panasonic 3DO system, but is there any real difference in the game between the 3DO and PS1 versions besides the pricetag?
A lot of enemies are actually made up of polygons on the PS1 version, I'm not sure they are on the 3DO version. That being said, you can't really tell the difference unless you're running in an emulator at higher resolutions than the original hardware. The 3DO version has smoother controls, faster loading, the enemies are easier to hit, and the video backgrounds in original mode are much better quality. They look horrific on the PS1 version. On the other hand, the enhanced mode on the PS1 has textured and shaded enemies, and the video quality is decent (at points it has some very noticeable artefacts that are not present on the 3DO version, but at other times it looks better/smoother).
Silanda , Does the PS1 release (or PS2's Tekken 5 port for that matter) have any DualShock feedback and do both make use of the analog thumbstick for aiming?
alex nijhol I haven't tried the PSX one, but seems to play pretty great, since it's much a recreation of the original using FMVs, while the enemies (Things you shoot up) actualy are rendered in 3D. The Tekken 5 port actually uses polygonal graphics for everything just like the original, but you have to aim by tilting the joystick, and must be unlocked to play fully to the end (You can play the 1st stage only when you start up T5).
"Team Leader, this is GeoSword. Please shut the f*** up. Over."
+nong333 Haha You got that right!!! haha!!
nong333 roger that

Terra Divers, each stage felt like a planned mission rather than a gauntlet
But that's the norm with this type of games, like freespace, colony wars, freelancer, wing commander, star cruiser, and many more.
the game should be called "this is team leader"

This was a nice bonus game on the Tekken 5. I have played it through couple of times.

I remember buying this game back in the day, I was massively disappointed because I thought I would be able to steer the spacecraft.
That's why my all time favorite is Colony wars, all series I finished playing... Best space game and story...

1:35 Your left or my left? I mean we're in space!
2:02 Take out the star lasers. YA THINK?!
Background is FMV (Full Motion Video) but the enemies are real rendered
1:55 after Warp speed, Tekken 5 intro plays
This is team leader, This is team leader.
Attack the starbird Geosword, i'll take the cord, over.
SHUT UUUUP and How I Felt Like When The Game Drive Me Insane
Uh, Team Leader, this is Geosword...visibility's fine, it's the clearance that sucks! Pilot, would you mind NOT flying us into a wall?
For the past year, I was trying to remember the name of this game. I stumbled across it and wanted to see if it was the right one. This is it.
I always wanted this, as I loved the arcade version. Always knew it wouldn't be that good without the bending-projection screen and the pumped-up sound (the speech in this game is TERRIBLE but in the arcade you couldn't hear what they were saying really)

De la primera hornada de playstation, que grandes momentos
I remember my dad playing this when i was 5!
Not a bad game. Should've been released on a compilation disc though.(If they even had those back then.)
Is this the mini-game you play in Tekken 5? O.O
*TEKKEN 5 BROUGHT ME HERE*
Yes it did released at the u.s.
IMPOSSIBLE TO NAVIGATE
Macking a quick turn.
A native PC version does not exist, but you can get the PS1 version and emulate it with ePSXe.
Nostalgia
Almost looks like Namco took reference from this game to make Galaga Zolgear
Star Fox Assault Game Make Namco
Here’s a tip: try taking out the Sub-Commander ships.
I didn't know they made starblade for the PS1
Same for Galaxian3
Star fox was nintendo's response to this game. They were aiming for space shooter game. Neither truly made it to the top of the best games though.
actualy it was silpheed for the sega cd
@jesserobles Yes!
@jesserobles By the looks of it, yes. O_o;
I only know about this game because of Ridge Racer 6 and Tekken 5.
Exactly what 221b sai. And don't forget about StarX For the GBA
Where can I get it for Windows 7? Or just for PC?
wow, i had this when i was like 5
Team leader always sounded a little like Bruce Dern to me.
i can't be the only one who thinks the flat polygons look so much better than this
Awful port, incredibly low FPS compared to original flat-polygonal version.
Good thing is, Tekken 5 had a proper version built-in.
Art L They tried though :P
You're right though, it does end up falling on its face.
Unfortunately, Tekken 5 version is only a demo.
No, it wasn't "only a demo", it was a port of the full arcade game.
Damn, thanks for the correction. Memories do tend to get fuzzy.
Hah! I know exactly what you mean, believe me!
こちらも格好いいですね。
This was made to compete against Nintendo's star fox
Nicolas Katsiabanis no it wasn't. ..came out 2 years before in the arcades.
Неплохая игра
This is how Rebel Assault would have turned out on the Amiga :D
star fox´s grand daddy
muy desenfadado 😎
this game is expensive as hell.
Not unless you buy Tekken 5
Well i don't know why that Namco are still making arcade games.
Interesting/cool effects but not as charming as the original arcade visuals.
8 months old comment, but still, you can see in the menu that you can use the original graphics.
does it run as good as good as the tekken 5 port?
alex nijhol

TheArcadeStriker thanks for the explanation :)
Actually StarBlade largely inspired Star Fox.
Totally not Star Wars Arcade + Starfox
This is 1991 arcade machine game, so it was two years before gay Starfox...
gay? really.
Well it took place in space. And in space, no one can hear you play music, so yeah.
R-Type 3D
Star Fox do PlayStation
@tenta01 LMFAO!
Such a short bad game, yet is worth so much
sold my copy on ebay last year for £50, well chuffed with that
I've heard better voice acting in a comic book.
What is this, a Star Fox knockoff?
Starblade on the PS1 seems downgraded for me
Horrible! :D
