  • Things in life are quite often being in the right place at the right time. I just happened to be in the area and I was invited to view the testing and review of the Garden Rail magazine article with the brand new Roundhouse Engineering Lilla. I checked with David Williams - GR editor, and he gave me permission to take a few shots to make this video - thanks David!
As you can see she runs beautifully, very smooth and has a good turn of power. Sharing the basic mechanics from previous models this loco is well tried and tested in that department, and Lilla won't disappoint!
Thanks to David Williams, Christine & David Mees
Filmed on location at Wigfa & Llanwrst Light Railway

Maximus has more to come. A lot of life events have been in the way of filming on my own railway, please bear with me.

I found out that you too have a mamod sl1. I only just got my one recently on ebay with a set of track(4 straight + 16 curved), a goods van and a guards van. I also noticed that the engine you have was/is running on a gas burner and I was wondering how did you convert it from burning tablets to burning gas and what parts did you need to make it happen? The reason I ask is because I think running on gas would be easier to control as I only have tablets and my engine races round the track like mad (and on occasions the vans derail followed by the engine from running at such speeds) so, what did you do to your loco to make it run on gas?

Thanks for your interest. Yes my SL1 runs with a gas burner, and it isn’t without its problems. The boiler is standard brass, but has been silver soldered for strength around the inserts and end cap. They are notorious for leaking or melting solder as standard, even without a gas burner. Controlling is difficult, the gas is as low as possible and the reverser is only just cracked open and yet still blows off. The regulator has been modified/equalised on both ports carefully to achieve this. Hope this helps.

After a good while of thinking, I have found out why my SL1 is going like the clappers. I was using too much fuel (you are given the permission for a face palm) I was using 2 mamod fuel tablets instead of 1. I split the tablets in half (with a small axe) to get them to sit on their flat sides in the burning tray, the big bits that were left over I carelessly put in the left over gaps. 😡 I am kicking myself for not knowing this earlier. Could have done some serious damage due to over heating and too much pressure in the boiler. From now on I'm only useing one fuel tablet per running session. By the way, you know these tubs of burning gel? Do you think, if you had the right trays and such, locomotives from Mamod or MSS could run on gel burners?

Can you have that train going around your Christmas tree?

Depends how big your Christmas tree is, no reason why not otherwise.
