When I was 12, I would listen to this video over and over to get myself calm enough to sleep. I just found john’s voice so soothing. It was the only thing that would get me out of the anxiety spirals long enough to relax. I am now 21 and I am still massively thankful for John (and of course, Hank) for giving me moments of calm in my often hectic life. Coming back to this video reminds me just how long these guys have been making work for us to enjoy. I am so thankful that they created a safe space and continue to make the world that little bit less sucky.

I am 22 now and also remember listening to this video when I was a teenager, and when nerdfighteria pushed its way into my life in the most loving way possible - Hank and John to this day are the most familiar voices in my life, and I am so grateful for this little community every day - it got me through high school and now continues to get me through law school ❤ DFTBA

its not a "real" book in the sense that there is a physical copy somewhere, but he (John Green) has said that "I’m not going on record as to whether the quotation from Peter van Houten’s novel An Imperial Affliction used as the epigraph to The Fault in Our Stars is “real,” because to do so would mean bringing up all kinds of questions about what constitutes “real” when you’re talking about fictions. But there’s no question that the title of An Imperial Affliction is indeed taken from this poem."

I read that book in 3 hours. It was loaned to me by a friend at school, I took it home, read it, slept, and returned it the next day.
P.S. I use the term slept loosely because it is kind of hard to sleep when you are crying. Just sayin'

The Fault in Our Stars is my COMPLETE OBSESSION. I had leukemia and the way you talk in the book sounds like you've had cancer yourself which i love. I can honestly tell you that i've looked at many of the lines in the book and thought wow I've said/thought that before . I have literally read this book 100 times (literally). If i had saved my Make a Wish i would have probably have been to meet you or get like one of your signed books or something but Hawaii was soo appealing at the time.. I know that you probably won't see this but I just thought it's worth a try. :) Can't wait for the movie! (i've watched the trailer about 150 times and cried every time) Thank you so much for bringing Augustus and Hazel into my life.

yes yes! you know when she tells Gus about "An Imperial Affliction" and she's like I want to tell the world about this book because it's so great but on the other hand she wants to keep it to herself. One of the few times I don't have the book on me so can't look up the actual quote. but it's exactly how I felt when I read it.
I love this because books always play out differently in different people's minds, and seeing how John imagines it; how it was intended to be read out is so incredible and interesting. Seeing which pauses he imagines in whatever places, and which syllables are stressed, and which sentences are read faster or longer, and all the intonation; this is a gift.
Every time I read TFIOS, it makes me want to write for a few more hours than I normally do every day, in the futile hope that one day I'll be as good as JG. The best kinds of writers are the ones that make young ones want to write more.

John Green. I have just finished watching the movie of the book you wrote "fault in our stars". I would like to thank you for creating such a beautiful fantastic story. I had a friend named Maureen die last year of lukimia cancer. It was very hard for me. I wish we were closer before she past. This story reminds me of her. But not only that , it inspires me. With such art in what you write makes me cry. When I'm older I want to be a realistic fiction novelist. I would hope to inspire people just like what you did to me. My name is Kylie. If you are reading this which you probably never will. I am pretty young and half ignorant, but I know one thing. The books you make will change some people's lives. Again thank you

it took me 3 months to read The Hunger Games, and I thought I liked it (since I almost never read) it took me 2 days to read TFiOS, my favorite story of all time (not to be dramatic or anything)

Ikr!! That makes no sense to me, because how can her mother start her in the support group when she is supposedly in her seventeenth year. But she introduces herself as a sixteen year old. I'm probably the only person who cared to notice THIS much about it. Whatever, the book is still good :3

Catherine Galiwango During your first winter, you are not yet 1 year old, you are some amount of months old. So in Hazel's 17th winter, she is 16 years old.

A friend and I watched A Fault in Our Stars a few days ago and I had completely forgotten that it was based a book you'd written until the very end credits. I'd cried through the film... probably more than I should have... and with seeing it as your book, I'm convinced that I can't rest until I read it. I realize now that the reason I'd cried was because it reminded me of how much it hurt when my son died in 2012. It was a beautiful story that I have to read now, so thanks for making that my new obsession.

So I had just realized that in the first sentence of the book "Late in the winter of my seventeenth year..." and then on page 5 "I'm Hazel, I'd say when they'd get to me. Sixteen.'' She said she was sixteen, but in her seventeenth year. This does make sense because you can be sixteen, but technically after your sixteenth birsthday, you're in you seventeenth year of your life, as you have already been through sixteen years. That makes perfect sense.

Though I'm more of a Looking for Alaska fan myself, The Fault in Our Stars is absolutely flawless. I don't think John Green is even capable of writing something any less than perfect.

Hmm I love john green and this book but there's always something bugging me about the first chapter. Why did hazel and Augustus fall in love in a cliche way? Like love at first sight? Of a brilliantly written book, I had expected something different.
Yes, it is a bit cliche, but their entire relationship as a whole was so beautiful and unique that I don't think it matters.

(I'm not English - sorry for the grammar) Hazel fell in love in a cliche way, not Augustus. He was looking at her because it reminds him of his ex-girlfriend and he was pretty shocked to see that Hazel was a sosie of her.
It wasn't cliche at all - she didn't even like him, in the first chapter, she was making a friend - almost forced but... not forced, you know? I mean who has ever written anything about two kids with/had cancer becoming 'friends' by having a brilliant conversation, that in fact, very few people would understand - it's almost exclusive to them. Like no one can enter their world, it's amazing. That's not cliche. That's what we crave, that's something that very few can put into words. When two people click. Cliche is when two opposites bond, slowly, gracefully or fumble-y. Cliche is what people find adorable, you see it a lot but not in real life. These two were so real yet so imagined... The way they speak to each other and have these small conversations that mean so much. I don't think it was cliche. But, then again, almost every love story is 'cliche'. Keep in mind that cliche is very common, but the story itself is actually hella unique.

I would like to share my thoughts on your book, Mr. Green. Although, they may make little sense to you as my mother has informed me my ideas of reality do not quite match up with those of the general public. Your book made me fall in love with characters that do not truly exist, and then ripped my heart out and crushed it. But the worst part was, your book then forced my heart back into my chest and then ordered me to go on. I fell in love with your book, it changed my life. Thank you.

It's deeply fascinating how vlogbrother-like the book is written. Logical, yes, but fascinating nonetheless
So my friend introduced me to Vlogbrothers recently and I've been watching every episode in order (yes, it's taking over my life). When I saw that this was a video, I was happy because I was just like, " I can skip that one because I already read the book! Another video down!!" But then.... TFIOS.... it's so amazing.... I just couldn't bring myself to skip it. My love for this story is too great and to hear an author reading their own book (especially when that author is John Green) is just grand.

I have to admit i have read thousands of books - I live for reading and this is the most incredible story ever. I cried for hours afterwards and mourned the characters and laughed until my ribs ached. It has changed the way i see the world and how I see people and I couldn't thank you more. It's a masterpiece and you should be eternally proud xxx

John Green, I don't know whether to hate or love you right now. I'm extremely upset because you made me cry so hard after reading your book. I still feel the tears on my cheek. But the sorrow you created, it's lovely and beautiful. I feel so much. I can't tell if it's good or bad, but I simply feel. Ive been reading this story repeatedly for almost a year now. The first time i read it i read straight through cover to cover without stopping and its just as perfect every time i reread it since. I love this book so much thank you for writing it, it makes me view the world differently and im so excited to see how they put it on screen but the movie will never do this book justice no matter how incredible they make it i just love TFIOS so much

I also love the fact that you and you're brother are so involved with the "fan base" and the world in general. I just finished reading The Fault in Our Stars. I will have you know I am not a cryer, I am a bite my lip and look at the ceiling until the pain recedes from my throat type of gal. I was alike Lilly in the comments below, emotionally unprepared for this experience. So I got to the near conclusion of the story, and began miraculously shaking and sobbing whilst my brother cooked eggs in the kitchen. He dropped the spatular, darted over and asked what was wrong; I kind of just looked up at him and said "This book better not finish mid sentence or I will have Johns head" which he then rolled his eyes and walked away. I was dreading the last lines just incase John would go all An Imperial Affliction on our asses and not give us a conclusion. I have to say I am very pleased, in a I am emotionally ruined kind of way, with the roller coaster that this book enveloped me in. I would recommend it to anyone and am now going to go and hand it to my brother, to show him that burning the eggs was really worth it.
I've read this book over and over again and i cry and become extremely emotional every time. This book is beyond overwhelmingly amazing. Thank You John. :)
I read this book in a day and I am obsessed! When I reread it I'm sucked into hazels beautiful horrible world and it feels real and for me being an eleven year old girl saying this it just just provokes my premature mind to think of cancer patients and think about what they go thru. I want to thank you John for writing such an amazing book.

I've read the masterpiece bearing the name "The Fault in Our Stars" multiple times now. Probably the only book I've ever managed to get through in a matter of a couple hours. It's absolutely incredible and John I applaud you for your artistic abilities using nothing but words and molding them into a fine piece of art. Thank you for providing us with TFiOS and many others which I'm in the process of reading. I just discovered this video and then I died of over-joy-ment of happiness…

I hate you. Do not stop reading, for this is not a hate comment, but a compliment if anything. I have almost finished reading this lovely book, in which I have just taken in the first three words of Chapter 21 and in doing so you have accomplished something only one other author has been able to do; you have made me cry, purely because of words printed on a page and essentially you have smeared my mascara. How dare you, John Green, smear my mascara by determining the fate of such a wonderful character. I hate you with nothing but a burning passion to finish this novel, and so, I will continue reading.
I love having read this book and then hearing this from the author. Like seriously John you are one of the most incredible authors ever and just watching one video from you and/or Hank I feel inspired.
