    In which John Green and Hank attend the premiere of The Fault in our Stars movie in New York City. Also featured are cast members Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Nat Wolff, Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, and more.
    Thanks to everyone who has read the book and shared with me in the process of watching the movie get made. Sharing this with you has made it real for me, and I hope you love the movie as much as I do.

      I just came back from seeing The Fault in Our Stars movie, and I got a overwhelming sense of pride watching it, not because I had anything to do with making it, but because I feel like I have been a part of the process as a viewer of this channel. I read the book a few months after it came out and I am so so glad that movie was so faithful and so incredibly well made. Congratulations John, and thank you for making the world a little bit more awesome with your story.

    "Read the book FIRST!"
    My mantra.

    • @TheSwimNerd
      @TheSwimNerd 10 років тому +1

      Diana Peña That's not the point he was trying to make. And not how most people would regard movie adaptations. Most people like to read the book first because there's just going to be more stuff in the book than in the movie. A movie can be good, but it can have absolutely nothing to do with the book that it was based on. That's not the case with TFIOS, though.

    • @TheSwimNerd
      @TheSwimNerd 10 років тому +2

      Diana Peña True, but of course you have to take into account that it is the author of said book that is telling people to read the book. It's something that he feels strongly about and he wants people to read the work that he did before going to see an adaptation of it. I don't think he meant it in any way that the movie isn't going to be good on its own even if you haven't read the book

    • @TheSwimNerd
      @TheSwimNerd 10 років тому +1

      Diana Peña The movie hasn't even really come out yet, and yes, John Green has seen it and as he mentioned in this very video, he really really likes it. I may even stray into the forbidden territory and say he loves it. He's getting to see characters that he imagined come to life and I believe that's why he wants people to read the book first. You can have your own experiences with the characters and when you watch the movie you can have that amazing moment when you see things that you made up in your head actually happen and it's a really incredible thing. That's the thing about reading. When we read we can create these worlds within our minds and live within them for fleeting moments and when our favorite books have good movie adaptations, you just get completely immersed in, not only the experience of the movie, but the memories of the book

    • @SidheKnight
      @SidheKnight 10 років тому

      Diana Peña You're right. A movie has to stand on its own merits, regardless of the source material.
      But I prefer to read the source material first, because it tends to be a much richer experience.

    • @TheGermandude2
      @TheGermandude2 10 років тому

      Diana Peña Very true. You shouldn't have to read the book to understand the film, that's just silly. I can understand why someone would want people to get a handling of the source material before heading into an adaptation just because but it shouldn't be required in order to enjoy the film.

    Dear John, I just saw The Fault in Our Stars. I have NO words. It followed the book SO well until the very end. I feels quite short even though it is quite long. And the theater would not have been complete with out the heavy sniffling throughout the film. Thank you, so much for your crwative genius..... and willingness to sell out and make a movie.

  • @mirathomas78

    John, I read your book a year or so ago and loved it. My husband found it on our Kindle and read it. When he was done, he told me that he wish he knew it was sad but also loved the book. When I first found out that a movie was being made, I was really excited and looked forward to watching it in the theater. Unfortunately, my love story changed two months ago that makes me too emotionally raw to see it. My 31 year old healthy (we thought) husband who rides his bike 70 miles a week, gardens, target shoots, runs races, etc. was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. He was given 6 months to a year to live without treatment. With treatment, maybe 2. We have found a treatment out of state that could give him 5. I am not strong enough emotionally to watch the movie since it's so close to home, so new. I am, however, thankful that you wrote the book and that so many people were touched by it. My husband isn't a teenager but he is starting to go through some of the emotions and thought processes that your characters experienced. People don't really know how to act around him yet. I think your book and this movie will help refocus some attention to children (and adults) who are sick. It will help them have a better grasp on how to treat them and not be afraid to talk to them. So, for that, I felt the need to say thank you. I know you probably won't see this comment and that's ok. :)

    I took my 61 year old mother to see the movie to see if I could melt her icy heart and I'm about 99% I succeeded. We were in a cinema packed full of sobbing fourteen year olds and they AWWD in unison everytime Gus said something about Hazel being beautiful and then I ended up crying my eyes out and the whole walk home my mum and I talked about how a short life can also be a deeply rich and moving life and it made her feel a lot better about her age and it made her want to live her life more fully and tick off all those things on her bucket list. Thankyou for writing such a beautiful story. John, you are an endless inspiration to me as a writer and as a human being. Thankyou for existing.

    John, I am a nerdfighter and a Malaysian. I have been a nerdfighter since 2012 and I am very excited for your movie and your success. I have read two of your books, Looking for Alaska and The fault in our Stars. I have been looking forward for the movie since it started production. But, The most disappointing thing is that it is only coming out in my country, Malaysia on the 31 of July. A whole month after the release in the USA. I know that you are not involved in the distribution of the movie around the world, but I just wanted you to know that I will be waiting for it. Thanks for making my life and the lives of countless others worth living. Thank you John

    Dear John,
    Just went thru a box of tissues.
    Saw TFIOS with my girl friends and my sweet daughter tonight.
    (Read the book months ago)
    When the Fox logo popped up, I shouted, "DFTBA" and the audience went wild.
    My husband and I are suffering from 2 different but serious diseases.
    I always thought I would die first.
    My husband was never sick, and was so strong and athletic.
    Loved by all who knew him.
    Then my loving husband got a 15 pound cancerous tumor in his intestines, and shattered his right leg.
    I have been in a lot of pain in my body, but my heart break knowing how sick my mate was, the worst pain of my life, devastating, a 10.
    I thought I would go insane with grief.
    We lost everything materially, except each other.
    We will continue to endure.
    The love between Hazel and Gus mirrors our love of 28 wonderful years.
    We are blessed. I am blessed.
    Thank You John Green for giving true love a voice.
    Just beautiful. Simply Beautiful.....
    Thank you.

    John kept saying that the people who made the movie really cared about the book and I could see that too, having just watched it. They made a huge effort to include scenes and put emphasis on specific lines that REALLY showed the message of the book - you don't have to leave an impact on everyone, leaving an impact on one person is enough. And that's why I loved the movie so much.

    This story isn't the type of book I normally fall in love with, it's sad, funny but in a nerdy kind of way and honestly heartbreaking. 2 years ago I would have picked it up read a chapter and put it back down never to be touched again. But with nerdfighteria my entire outlook on almost everything has changed. I'm no longer the person who runs away from people I consider "nerds" I can honestly say now that I am one of those nerds I avoided before. I don't think I personally have changed as in who I am but the fact that I can admit it and say I LOVE vlogbrothers, I LOVE every book I have read that john has written and I love so much more that nerdfighteria has given to me. Thank you john, thank you hank. You both have allowed to me to grow in huge ways and I can promise I will be first in line to see TFIOS Friday when in comes out

    Just finished watching "The Fault in our Stars", and wow, good job on the book, and they did an amazing job on that movie.
    I smiled and cried and completely lost it more than once, and the ending just (cheese alert) sent me to an almost other-worldly feeling of euphoric joy mixed with and sadness, so i just wanted to stand up and laugh, and cry at the same time. I swear i just sat in my chair completely still, feeling that my soul was somehow ascending, to what i'm pretty sure Nirvana is to those who believe in it. Good job John Green.
