  • What if you make abstract art? Is it about the journey or the destination? For the longest time, I wasn't so sure. I discuss this wily topic and also show you how I mix colors intuitively when painting and discuss my dreams of making art accessible.

    Hi! I'll offer 2 things.
#1. Sometimes I swear you have zero focus and direction when starting your paintings and continues right till the end. You are like a messy child who is enjoying what she is doing. There is no plan until that magic moment when I can see that you are near the end and you then have an Aha! moment and then you complete your painting with purpose.
#2. Your method works for you and I see you are enjoying the process. Bravo. Someone pointed out that a master painter fails more than a beginner ever tries. Thank you for being genuine and fearless in your works. I can learn from you to open up and fearlessly experiment. Thank you.

I don't think it's about knowing what to do or how to create a good painting. I think it's more about knowing how to resolve a problem, which might create another problem. And you know you're done when you don't need to resolve anything. I haven't gotten there yet.

I used velcro stickers which I got from some artwork I bought from Red Bubble. The Peter Doig prints were small and mounted on board just like yours and they came with these velcro round little stickers which you put in each corner. . Apparently they come off the wall and your board really easily when you peel them off but I haven't tried that yet. That's the bit i'm not sure about but it looks great because the pictures are away from the wall just a little bit and you can't see the velcro stickers.
Going back to whether art has a message or meaning...I was once told by a well known British artist that you can choose your subject but you can't choose your meaning and you don't always know your meaning for a while. Others may get your meaning before you do. I really like that idea.

Interesting. I’m having trouble visualizing how the Velcro sticks to the wall. On other Velcro stickers? So you have to put stickers on the drywall? I just figured out a cool technique maybe I’ll share in a Short.
Thanks for the response about messages. That’s great 🎨🌷

You've made another beautiful introspective video 😍 I can totally relate to the struggle of "framing"/displaying paper Pieces.... And I love to see your art process 'cause It really reflects aaalll the things are involved in a good abstract artwork.
I'm an Italian artist with Obsession for art ❤ I don't talk well English, so I can't explain everything I want...so ti capisco moltissimo ed è bellissimo ed incoraggiante vedere un'artista preparata che fa praticamente i miei stessi ragionamenti ed usa bene la sua intuizione ❤ 🧡🙏

I too would like some input in hanging paintings without frames. Although most of my work is matted, I have MANY pieces that are not. As far as having your work not flat on the wall, I think I would try pieces of foam core, and see if that works.
So after watching this I’m going to brainstorm tonight. Maybe attach some fine fish line to the paper wide enough to keep the picture level, and try some foam core! I’ll let you know how that works, and if I come up with anything else.
BTW, I love, and appreciate your work and your vision. ❤️

Hi Blake, I have no idea how you call it in English, but I really like mounting my pieces on foam sheets (?). Your paintings are beautiful! I often see eerie landscapes and figures in them and I get lost in their mood or atmosphere very easily.😊

Foam core? I’d love to see what they look like. Thanks for the compliment 🌸

I suppose another question is, do others need to know my message to enjoy my art? My answer would be no. I also so a lot of embroidery which I generally leave unfinished and I like to tell people when they ask that it left like that for them to imagine what they would put there…but really it’s because I CBF to finish it😂 I live in horror of having to name my paintings too😂

    • @KitchenCounterAbstract

True, I don’t think they do - in fact it’s better if they read into on their own which is why I love abstraction. (Like you were saying). CBF’d - we don’t use that in the states but I like it!

lately ii've integrated chunks of learning & knowings, like a puzzle box where the outcome in the cover morphed as my experience using said pieces collaborated & morphed moving from how-to's to aha! moments.
also have begin to notice others works as expressions of their knowing regardless of their style or palette or m.o. this seems to be, for me, a semblance of shared awareness, similar to being in an audience sharing the love of a game, or a concert, or even a location, activity, interest that overrides all external differences.
as ii participated in this video, ii felt as if ii were one of your colors, or a brush change, a shape...and the moments since maybe 2 or 3 years old of colors as sounds and shapes as language re-emerged consciously, like reading a music score, hearing God's Voice over the world's noise and distractions.
Your energy speaks to alive of dynamics, synthesis, a deep care for clarity amidst chaos, & deliberate structure arising out of abstraction, yet inviting the viewer to share yr view from our own perspective & perhaps to be as bold & still carefree as to outcome, allowing it to emerge thru you evwn with a 'goal' in the mix.
my mom was a proponent of abstract art ( primarily oils in canvas) & was incredibly prolific, from crafts to fashion, seaweed art, stained glass, cooking, antiques, you name it she did it. growing up ii didn't do much except music, til about ten years ago, after she passed & ii knew on some nonverbal level ii coild now indulge my joys of muxed media without stealing her thunder or undermining her prolific accomplishments. while that seems an unlikely scenario, ii knew from very young her need for a unique voice that flew in the face of tremendous rejections by backward observers & 'men artists are more important than women' beliefs, ii could not, would not ' compete' for need to be seen for her own self...
it seems obvious now we are our own best self & worst inner critics, mostly due to being ahead of ourselves in places where mistcof our viewers are not in tune with our creative perceptiviry. Yr alluding to those 'who know you' says more to me about how you've helped them see what you are sharing, of going beyond where they thought they were so their response was brought up the scale... my mom tried to do that, more like an eagle among chickens but whose personality still got overrun by chicken's noisy ignorance.
You're way ahead...almost beyond a need to explain what flows thru you...and this is as important, if not more so, than the actual result on paper... Thank you.

This is such a thoughtful and inspiring response to Blake’s work and I’d love to hear/see more of what you have to say. Do you have a blog channel / website I can follow?
