Amazing tutorial! Explains very good the principle of straights and curves. I'd love to see you use this on a character like Cherry, for example to get a better understanding of how to use this on a more complex drawing.
Thank you so much for giving me a new look of perspective on animating characters, Paris! It means a lot to know skilled artists like you are willing to teach others!
Great tutorial! I'd always used straights against curves to add visual variety in my character designs, but never thought to apply it as a way to push the line of action. Great tip!!!
I know this is a major piece lacking in my cartooning. Always struggling with how to locate and define the line of action. Curves and Straights will be my new mantra. Cheers!
Wow ... what an exceptionally good tutorial! It's one of those things that are actually pretty easy to understand but at the same time can make a world of difference once you learn how to use it. Thanks a lot for sharing your much appreciated wisdom, Paris! :)
Great teaching Paris. I have to admit my artwork has soared ever since picking up your How to videos and even these small videos you do for us helps me out big time. I love your teaching I love your work, when people ask me how do I draw that? I tell them, from my new instructor a man named Paris Christou and you can find him on youtube educating many in the world of art and animation. Please keep up the good work my friend.
Awesome video Paris! First I've watched of your videos and love the clear, intelligent process but chilled and friendly style ... +1 sub for you! :) Rock on - looking forward to checking out more.
This really good stuff! If you want more liveliness to your poses, check this video out. Paris, are you making more videos about this topic? Can you make a version where you apply this to a humanoid character *coughcherrycough*? :D Thanks!
hehehehe cough cough lol Its actually the same thing just depends on how cartoony the character is. the more realistic the character... the more subtle approach to this technique :)
Nice Video Paris, thank you! One thing: It would be a cool thing if you show us how a character looks if you only us this straights vor only curves. So wie have some reference what is false. :)
Hey Paris great tutorials. I was wonder if you can select something with the lasso and the flip it. Like if its facing right and you want it to face left?
lol you anger me how well you draw! :) I'm about to purchase a Cintiq tablet for drawing... any ones you'd recommend? If so the pens they come with are they good enough or should i be looking for something good enough? please keep the videos coming, i check in everyday to see if there's something new!
Hey thanks dude :) It gets easier through tons of practice. As for the Cintiq... depends on your budget! If you can afford to get the 24HD.... go for it!!! its awesome :) Otherwise, any of the cintiqs will do the trick :)
Hey man, love your videos, but I do have a question about your 'feathering' technique when you draw your lines. A lot of artists (especially fine artists) say that this is a bad thing to do, it's better to use one strong line rather than multiple small ones. But I heard that animators are taught that feathering is better - I'm sure there isn't a clear right or wrong here but why are animators told to draw like this when fine artists say it's bad?
Hi :) Fine artists are not meant to really create cartoons but when it comes to illustrating cartoon characters for either comics, frames in an animation or just a picture on a poster... There are no rules, as long as the outline is clean and visable. Now adays, everyone is really into vector solid lines which is a cool crisp look. In my oppinion, I prefer the feathering technique with a pencil tool just because it gives a natural look and its really easy to control to get the little details in there.
Is it possible to do animation on Sketchbook Pro or is it not possible. I wanna do a cool little 10 second animation for fun some day if it's possible.
Its possible to create little sequences and to practice. But you can't export the animation as a video and you can't add sound. Maybe in the future... Sketchbook pro will take the animation side seriously and develop it since they have all the tools in the software :)
+Winged Angel Game Jam www.sketchbook.com/thankyou this is for free but if you want the pro one it costs 3.99 per month and 29.99 per year(2.99 and 19.99 in euros)
That little cardboard bear was cute though xD
hehehehe he looks like a care bear :)
Amazing tutorial! Explains very good the principle of straights and curves. I'd love to see you use this on a character like Cherry, for example to get a better understanding of how to use this on a more complex drawing.

Yeap, it's a very fun and effective technique. Now when you observe cartoons on tv... you will spot it :)
Omg your stuff is great and so easy to follow, you've gained a fan
I know this is a major piece lacking in my cartooning. Always struggling with how to locate and define the line of action. Curves and Straights will be my new mantra. Cheers!

No animals were harmed in the making of this video.
(Maybe)
Hehehehehehe cough cough, Ray Donovan just left the building lol
Brilliant! It's the same for human characters as well, right?
I was thinking that too! I draw mainly anime characters or real people (bodies only).
Yeah ofcourse :) As long as it's in a cartoon form. If you are going for realism... then we are talking about S and C curves :)
Bethany Francia You can apply this to anime easily :)
.... THANK YOU

What's the song at the beginning called?
Will you also recommend this if we are to use Flash?
Yayz
My pleasure my friend ;)
Sorry to bother you, but are there any free courses?
May I ask what background you're for your canvas on sbp? Looking at white really hurts my eyes and I love the way yours looks.
Its just a paper texture that you can google. There are tons of them. This one i made from tea bags :)

+Winged Angel Game Jam Sketchbook has a free version, but Pro costs cash. I'd say even the free version is really good though.
