Thanks for the video. I've replaced everything in your video except the vacuum pump at the rear of the head - next on my list. You are absolutely right about oil quality - I use 5W 30 Castrol Edge and change it every 5K miles - no leaks.
No problem! I use Valvoline 5w30 because I’ve heard that it’s possible to buy fake Castro in Poland so I decided to play it safe. Works just fine 💪 vacuum pump is not very difficult, 3x10mm bolts and it’s out 😉
very very hard to say. I think if you have a good source CASTROL is OK. I think every country has it differently. In some CASTROL will be the best thing ever and in others the worst thing because it will be fake.
Great video man, these engines really aren't as bad as people say, my first car was a N42. Replaced most the gaskets and some sensors (crankshaft, camshaft) and drove it from 170k to 270k without issues, yearly oil changes of course. Currently I have N46 and this one also leaked from all the known spots, oil housing, valve cover, vacuum pump, vanos solenoids. Replaced the seals and no oil leaks anymore. These engines just need some love
Oh yes! I think the same. I completely rebuild mine few years back with a crank and rods swap to make stroker. After that it run in my car for 70k km without any issue and is now in my mom’s car still going strong. And I did redline it a lot on the highways 😂 but always did change the oil on time and have never given it cheap oil. Also thanks for the opinion 🙌 I appreciate it 😁
Oil leaks there are not too common so if the engine is still in the car I’d leave it alone. If the engine is out I’d change it. Maybe I forgot to put a clip in or it was badly recorded but I took it apart and replaced the seal since I had it in the set. But there is hardly any oil getting there anyways which you can see by how dirty the spring usually is ;) 🙋♂️
hey man, my car has the n42b18a engine and recently threw a code for camshaft position sensor and fuel trim additive bank 1 high, i replaced both intake and exhaust camshaft sensors and reset ecu, both codes have disappeared however the car still doesnt feel right and i can still sometimes hear a slight knock noise from cylinder 1 area which started when the code first came up. ive read online that the timing chain tensioner is to blame but im no mechanic and i need the opinion of someone who has experience with these engines. it would be great to recieve a reply from you, love the content
Hi! Thanks a lot. There is a chance that the tensioner went bad. But if it did there is a chance that the chain is also on its way out. Advising online is difficult but you can try taking the valve cover off to check how old is your timing set and see if chain is loose or not. I’d recommend changing the whole timing set rather than just tensioner. While you have the valve cover off check your valvetronic for any issues with the spring. If it’s more like ticking noise rather than knocking it might be hydraulic valve lifter too ;)
@@gorillaprojectcar also how hard is doing the full timing procedure? i’m fairly inexperienced with engines but unfortunately cannot afford to get a qualified mechanic to do it for me. also there is a ticking and a knocking, but i think the ticking is probably something else, im going to service it soon and see if that helps with anything
It’s not that difficult al long as you have basic tools and the set of timing blockades. I think I showed all in the video of how I do it but if you have questions I’ll try to help 😉
One of the best bmw engine N46, while N42 is very bad, for many reasons, I have an e46 with N46 engine. for 4 years now, and apart from changing the quality oil at 7000km, regular maintenance, I haven't had a single problem. the valve cover gaskets, crankcase, oil pan housing, chain and coils with spark plugs were replaced.. that's it.. it doesn't waste oil, it doesn't smoke from the exhaust, perfect engine..
I like those engines a lot too! E46 with n46 is the best to work on due to a way that wiring is done. So much easier than n42 or n46 in e87 or e9x. Since I rebuilt mine I also haven’t had any issues with it. I don’t have this engine anymore as I swapped it into my mums car and she’s happy with it. We change oil every 10k km and as you said, using good quality oils keeps this engine happy 💪
I think that if I do get to buy my 316ti 2003 today i might have to make a trip to Poland and you can do couple of things :) How much would you like to check the whole car and replace the parts that need replacing such as timing chain, gasket and valve steam seals and other?
n42 engine is really not bad ... 1. looking for excellent maintenance ... The BMW 320si {n45 engine) WTCC celebrated an impressive debut in the World Touring Car Championship. {engine made on the basis of n42 | n46)
Hi dude I have a question. How often should I change that, cuz I have a e82 n46 - 50km and I see a little oil for that zone. So I believe that is necessary to change that things. I hope u can help me. Thanks
To be honest some engines last without oil leaks lingers than others. So if you see something you can change gaskets but there is no rule just indications more or less ;)

Careful with the vacuum pump gasket, it cannot be fixed by replacing the gasket, you need to change the vacuum pump with a new one. If you just change the gasket it will last about a year, 1.5 years, but at winter it will start dripping on the exhaust and that is annoying. To save yourself some work, just buy a new one, that will last much more. This is because the vacuum pump also has an internal gasket that you can't change.
We buy both gaskets in set and replace both of them. Just 5 bolts and job is done. But that’s a good comment and will definitely help someone 😁 cheers 🍻
Youre getting 👎 for that comment 😂 it’s all because you’re used to 2.8 which has any kind of power not like n42b18 🤷🏼♂️ they are slow, but the one in my compact was really reliable 😉 it’s all in the maintenance 👨🔧
@@gorillaprojectcar of course it's all maintenance, but it's too expensive for 4cyl engine and a bit more than 100hp. Also very short transmission and high fuel consumption. So for me this engine is absolutely useless. Sorry again))
@Никита Кожемяка I do have to agree that they could put in a longer diff but then it would accelerate even slower. the 2.0 version is a lot better. Same fuel consumption but those extra 25hp make a difference
