I love that Bulma finally realized that it was Goku because he said something stupid. Also, that is Sean Schemmel doing Goku's voice still. He just raised the pitch to show that Goku is a teenager at the time.
Correct. He's 12 at the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, so that would make him 15 in this arc, nearly 16 because his birthday supposedly is sometime in May, I think late. Turns 13 at some point in the Red Ribbon arc because he was 12 when the Dragon Balls were used. Since the Budokai is always in early May, he is indeed 18 going on 19 here
Goku being aged up this much is SOMETHING Toriyama REALLY had to fight for with his editors iirc. Turns out, it was a worthwhile fight. It, among other things (like goku's origin being revealed), extended dragonballs' shelf life for a long, LONG time.
Tien never liked how he was declared the winner between him and Goku last time. The Truck beat goku, not him, so he wants to prove he is the better warrior. It's honestly that simply
This episode always feels surreal no matter how many times I watch it. It is a very emotional episode since the lovable little kid that we knew is now turning into the grown hero that he's supposed to be.
I really miss Kid Goku too when this arc begins. He's so goofy but inspiring and just going on adventures all over the world, meeting all sorts of people, saving the world. Even though his training is pretty much all filler, I always watch those because it feels like it shouldn't be and it's the last time you get to see him like that. 15-year-old Goku might be my favorite version of him
@@betterthanemril988 Through the manga and different editorial decisions made post King Piccolo was a big shift. Baris just so happen to pick up on it. Dragon Ball is one big story Z isn’t really a thing we have to remember that. This is where the series changes for the future.
Yes I’m aware of this, however I’m just understanding the perspective of a person that didn’t read the manga first, and was introduced to the anime in its “Z” portion
Goku and Krillin reuniting was so touching especially when you remember the last time Goku seen Krillin was right after the previous tournament. That's a very long time especially with Krillin being dead for most of it and Goku being forced to train for 3 years
Man I love the original gang of characters. Piccolo Vegeta and Gohan were 100% necessary but I will always have appreciation for Goku Tien Yamcha Krillin Bulma Roshi and Launch. Launch shouldn’t have been forgotten about, she was a good way to keep Tien more grounded imo.
The scene with piccolo saving the woman and her child was not in the manga. The anime creators decided to make this scene as a foreshadowing to piccolo becoming good in the future because at the time this episode was made, the manga was already at the point where piccolo trained Gohan
Also when Goku said the moon could be restored if he lost his tail, he meant that Kami would bring back the moon that Roshi previously destroyed but only if Goku agreed to permanently lose his tail. Naturally, he doesn't want Goku rampaging as a Great Ape again (remember just one Great Ape can destroy an entire planet if it isn't stopped in time).
It's a mistranslation about Goku tail. Kami is the one that get rid of the tail by saying that he must get rid of the Goku's tail so he can bring back the moon. But the real reason is that he knows what will happen if Goku's tail still exist.
love yalls content have been watching silently since the first frieza arc reaction, this episode and two others are what i’ve been waiting for, they specifically just hit home w me as a kid.
The reason Piccolo saved that boy and his mother was because this episode first aired when Raditz shows up in the DBZ manga so this isn’t technically canon since it never happened in the manga but they wanted to hint that Piccolo is showing signs of being good before he eventually turns over to the good side so it’s more just a reference than anything but it’s still cool
The scene of Piccolo saving the kid was added to the Anome. At the time this was being created, the Saiyajin arc had started with Piccolo now siding with Goku.
15:15 in the last tournament, Tien won on the technicality when Goku got hit by the car as they were both falling. Tien knows that if it werent for that, he lost the fight.
What Tien was referring to when he said he wanted to settle the score, in my opinion, is that this time there would be no strings attached, and no evil intention when they face each other again. It will be a pure 1v1 battle where they are true martial artists.
20:09 the narrator says “to defeat the alien”…crazy that this is before Goku is canonized as a Saiyan alien

its a stupid retcon from USA because they dubbed DBZ first before dubbing OG DB, thats why so many people are telling new people to watch the original Japanese version of OG DB.
I believe that Tien was referring to him always feeling that he never definitely beat Goku so he wants to have a clean win over Goku. The last one was a bit lucky because of the truck that hit Goku
I've been looking forward to this episode to see both of your reactions to aged up Goku. As others have said he's 18 here. The 23rd tournament is probably the best of the world martial arts tournaments we get to see.

ok wait.. I have seen this episode so many times but quick question.. If Piccolo came at night.. by that time the registration was done.. How did he sign up...?
Krillin was killed before Old king piccolo was revealed much less young king piccolo, and Yamcha never seen him young. I believe he was on the news once before he rejuvenated with the dragon balls. So he never seen him young either. Only Tein and his little buddy, and Goku of course know what he looks like. Well and people in the Audience if they happened to see him of they was in West city when he was going to blow it up or something.
Because during piccolo and Goku fight with raditz Goku was surprised to see piccolo wearing weighted clothes as if piccolo was not wearing weighted clothes during the Martial arts tournament. Not to mention they never say piccolo wearing weighted clothes until the Saiyan saga. Now it could be something different in the manga but as far as I know in the anime piccolo starts wearing them after seeing Goku wear them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but do any of you know if Goku has been training in the hyperbolic time chamber during the last 3 years? Could that be the reason why he is all grown up?
I don't know if the hyperbolic time chamber was already a thing at that point of the series, but later on cell saga, when it was, at least for what I can remember, officially shown for us in the series for the first time, Goku mentioned to Gohan as they entered the chamber that he tried to train there once when he was younger (much probably at this 3 year gap between the two last tournaments of OG DB), but he only last 2 months until he was wored out.
I love that Bulma finally realized that it was Goku because he said something stupid.
Also, that is Sean Schemmel doing Goku's voice still. He just raised the pitch to show that Goku is a teenager at the time.
Not so much stupid, just ignorance. He was always confused by simple social cues.
According to fandom, Goku is 18 in this episode. He was 15 when he fought Tien and King Piccolo.
Goku is about 23 or 23 and a half years old by the start of DBZ
Correct. He's 12 at the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, so that would make him 15 in this arc, nearly 16 because his birthday supposedly is sometime in May, I think late. No. You officially are not.
This definitely where the series took a full shift in a lot of ways to what we know it to be on Z.
In his mind because he saw DBZ first (if you grew up watching toonami must of us did) I think it’s because he’s seeing what’s familiar to him.
