In the manga he cut that foot off on the atoll to eat it, but was censored in the anime cause Oda's editors thought it was "too dark for a kids show"
Its understandable but the anime cut the last part... Sanji spend the rest of that day, all nigth calling for that ship and they just leave the zone for i think was 5 more days until they come back and both Sanji and Zeff where totally bones and bearly alive... always seems odd to me they dint show that.

Zeff knows a chef's mindset. A cook would rather starve than let someone else go hungry. He knew that if Sanji found out he had given him the only food they had the boy wouldn't have eaten any of it.
I really enjoy those fans react videos about One Piece cuz the ladies' reaction always tend to be emotional, and I will be like that too lol
in the manga, Zeff's leg was lost in a different, more gruesome way.

In the manga Zeff's sacrifice has more sense. Here Zeff lose his leg to save Sanji and himself. Its 100% his fault if he cant reach his dream. In the manga he lose the leg to feed Sanji, so its not 100% his fault. However, anime or manga, Sanji didnt anything wrong

Usually in shonen most fans prefer secondary characters to the MC. It's normal for people to root for the "cool" characters, rather than the MC, which is usually more nice and goofy.
In fact, Luffy is one of the most beloved MCs in all shonens, because he breaks a bit the mold of the usual super nice, good guy MC as he is very quirky, selfish and silly.
