Go with God, Jim. We'll miss you greatly, Sir. We'll hear your song in the breeze as it whispers through the trees, and in the call of the eagle as it soars through the skies. We'll hear your song in the splash of the creeks and rivers as the salmon swim upstream, and we'll see your spirit in the caribou, moose and bear. Bless you, Hobo Jim, and thank you for allowing me to sing with you...it is a memory I'll take with me for the rest of my days. Happy trails, dear sir.
My son and I were privileged to meet Hobo Jim in Homer, Alaska during our vacation after listening to his songs for more than 5,000 miles on our trip to the land of the midnight sun. He is a great entertainer.
As a friend and fellow Alaskan performer, Hobo Jim has been our official state balladeer for over 40 years. He is now facing the end of his trail, dealing with cancer he never knew he had until after our state fair last month. We are ALL devastated knowing he will not be at the fair next year unless a miracle happens and cures him immediately. Prayers and many well wishes for him and his lovely wife of 42 years as they both face the ultimate path in life for all of us, just some a little too soon. Hobo Jim will live on forever in our hearts and in Alaska and worldwide, where this song has been known to be part of some schools' curriculum in teaching about Alaska and the Iditarod race itself! What an honor it has been to know him, join him on stage, and as a friend. God Bless "Hobo Jim" Varsos in his next journey...
Love it!! The 4th Grade always follows the Iditarod, and this year, we are also in charge of the March School-Wide Assembly. One of our classes will be performing this song! Thank you for posting!
My class did the iditaread where we read then completed checkpoints every so often. Then we drafted mushers first place got first pic on a prize then 2nd then 3rd and last place got a prize my guy this year Thomas Warner won and I got a super cool hat
My teacher is Mrs Fenton she is a great teacher but she had to head of to the Iditarod because she is going to be stopping at checkpoints and she is going to be seeing dogs Great song by the way :D
@katalendw There almost wasn't a song. He explained it once. He was laying in bed one night, suffering from insomnia, and he suddenly sat up and said, "I did it!" His wife asked "Did what?" He said, "I did the Iditarod Trail!" He never intended to write a song about the Iditarod Trail specifically, he was just trying to come up with another song.
@katalendw Same here! Just havnt been able to mush this Winter not enough snow in PA......Im sure my siberian husky is itching to mush I only have her and a shiba inu for a team right now but when im older ill get a real team for sure but i guess its not the number of the dogs but how much love and trust you have for them and how much they love ya rightt back and if there obedient
Unrelated, but from the conversation was inspired by the attack on Aliy Zirkle and Jeff King in this year's race, still trying to get it through to my boyfriend that it's a snow machine... moving down south has its complications.

Hey, why wasn't he in this video?
Away up in Alaska
The state that stands alone
There's a dog race run from Anchorage into Nome
And it's a grueling race with a lightning pace
Where chilly winds do wail.
Beneath the northern lights, across snow and ice
It's called the Iditarod Trail.
Well, give me a team and a good lead dog and a sled that's built so fine,
And let me race those miles to Nome, one thousand forty-nine
Then when I get back to my home
Hey I can tell my tale
I did, I did I did the Iditarod Trail.
Well the race it won't be easy
For the masters of the trail
And some of them will make it and some of them will fail
But just to run that race takes a tough and hardy breed,
And a lot of work done by the dogs
That run across snow with whistling speed.
Well, give me a team and a good lead dog and a sled that's built so fine,
And let me race those miles to Nome, one thousand forty-nine
Then when I get back to my home
Hey I can tell my tale
I did, I did I did the Iditarod Trail.
I just pulled out of Safety
And I'm on the trail alone
I'm doin' fine and I'm pickin' up time
And runnin' on in to Nome.
There's no sled tracks in front of me
And no one's on my tail
I did, I did, I did the Iditarod Trail!
Well, give me a team and a good lead dog and a sled that's built so fine,
And let me race those miles to Nome, one thousand forty-nine
Then when I get back to my home
Hey I can tell my tale
I did, I did I did the Iditarod Trail
I did, I did I did the Iditarod Trail
I did, I did I did the Iditarod Trail.
