Lance is a living breathing miracle. In 2001 he was diagnosed with throat cancer. "The radiation from the treatments also destroyed his saliva glands, causing his teeth to disintegrate."(Wikipedia) Yet he went on to win the Iditarod 4 years in a row, all the while super-sensitive to cold as a result of the treatments.

I don't know how he didn't feel the cold air but Jeff put his feet on Mackey's boots in Koyuk, which is a checkpoint before the checkpoint where Lance decided to sneak out.

The reason he wins is because he's not afraid to die. Huge advantage.
"Bunny boots", or vapor barrier boots. They have a layer of air between two rubber shells. Super warm, but don't breathe at all. You can't see them well in the video, but they have valves on the outsides of the ankles - you have to unscrew the valves to let the air out if you're flying in an unpressurized or partially pressurized aircraft, or the air in the boots will expand and get too tight on your feet, or damage the boots.
