2023 will also see the release of the Canon R5II which will probably be in competition with the Nikon Z8 and Sony A7RV. Will be interesting to see how they all compare with the final specs. In the meantime, I’ve got back into using my Nikon DSLR’s a lot more of late, having heaps of fun with them 🤩 🙏🤙
Hi Adrian, I think it shows quite well that there doesn't exist anything like THE right camera, it always depends on your personal situation. What/how you photograph on the one hand, but also which gear you own already. Thank you for sharing this great video and looking forward to your new camera in 2023 :) Enjoy your weekend, Christian
Thanks for watching Christian. I think the cameras next year will be very interesting to see from all the manufactures. Love seeing new technology as it evolves in the photography world. Have a great weekend my friend, cheers 📸🙏
I bought the Z50 and have used it for a couple of years now and have been pretty happy with it. It's not top of the line by any standard, but it does what I need at a very comfortable price.
Interesting review on the Nikon Z50 and what a great idea to try out a camera first before buying. Understand you reasons for returning it. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts - have a great week :)
Think I’ll be renting a lot more gear from now on Shaun. Cheaper, easier and when you’re finished just send it back. Thanks for watching mate, cheers 🍻 👍🙏
Thanks Richard for watching. Be interesting in 2023. All the manufacturers have new cameras due. Will be sitting back and watching all the fun specs. Cheers mate 🙏
I have been working with the Z50 and it have made miracles. But also I had a lot of problems with it like the in-build flash stopped working. ...external flash.....and a lot of other minor problems which became really anoying!
What a delightfully well-reasoned video. Thanks for sharing! I've been using my Z50 on and off since 2020 and keep coming back to it because it's just enjoyable to use. It definitely lags behind Canon in the AF department, but what a great travel camera! I think if I was a pro I would also stump for full frame, but having tried some FF cameras out recently, It seems to me that they're just too big and heavy, and I struggle a bit to enjoy using them. Thank goodness there are so many wonderful options out there!
Agree with you on the weight savings. Love the output from my full-frame camera, but it's a chore to lug around sometimes with its massive lens. I'm actually looking to downgrade to a Z50, or its successor if it comes out this year.
Hi Adrian, Thank you for a good explanation why returning the Z50! I changed camera from D7100 to Z50 about a year ago as I wanted to move into the mirrorless system and wanted to continue using cropped sensor for my wildlife and bird photography. I like the Z50, but as many others I am waiting for an improved Nikon DX camera.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Yes I agree, hopefully we get a DX camera with better focus, IBIS and higher MP sensor. Fingers crossed for a baby style Z9. Have a great day 🙏
hello there! I am now facing the same choice: should I change the 7100 to the z50 for wildlife photography. What do you think, faced with a choice again, what would you do? How good is the autofocus in the z50 compared to the 7100 and is there a gain in iso?
thanks Adrian, 100% agree with your opinions. I am still using D7100 since 2014 and waiting for a right full frame Z camera as i am a hobbyist in birds & wildlife photography and night sky photography as well. the Z8 is the one I am waiting for.
Thanks for watching Ambrose. Will be very interesting next year, so many cameras being released. Z8 will be super cool I'm sure. Have a great weekend mate, cheers 📸🙏
If Nikon release the crop sensor camera you speak of it might be enough to tempt me back to Nikon, although my finger is itching to get the Fuji XT5, time will tell, thanks for sharing Adrian.
Looks like all those cameras that are right around the corner will be a much better option for sure! Exciting times ( not for your wallet😃😃😃). Looking fwd to seeing what body(ies) you will end up investing into! Cheers
Thanks for watching Peter. Be interesting next year for sure. Canon have the R5II coming too. I'd love to see that camera as well. Sony have an APS-C camera (A7000?) which should be cool too. Great time to be a photographer, lots of cams to play with and choose from. Have a great weekend mate, cheers 📸🙏
What do you think about the future of Nikon? I hesitate to buy more Nikon gear because it could be the new Pentax (small niche market share). It means less distribution and less support.
Yeah I hear ya. This is why I won’t sell my D750 & D850. Great cameras. It’ll be interesting to see the Z8 and if a baby Z9 comes out in an APS-C. That could make or break them I think 🤔
My situation as well. The Z50 is discounted now so is tempting as a lightweight travel option, but I will wait for the newer model with IBIS and improved autofocus even though it will weigh more. It will replace my D750. I have also decided to keep my old DX 12-24 f/4 G lens even though it will require the FTZ converter and isn't VR. It goes wider than the 16-50mm kit lens and takes the 77mm filters I already have.
Totally agree with everything you said Thomas. Most definitely need that IBIS in a new model APS-C. I've kept my Viltrox Z APS-C 13mm F1.4 (20mm FX) to use on the new model as well. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏📸
Good shout re the hiring out of kit before actually buying. Lens hire outlets normally get the new kit first so you can at least have a play with the exotic new kit before waiting ages (if you go ahead and purchase) for the kit to arrive?
Thank you for watching Steve. I think the rent method is what I'll be using for large lenses to see if they're what I need in the future. Enjoy your weekend
Adrian, as always a great review with some sound decisions. I’ve been toying with getting a mirrorless Nikon but like you I am holding to see if the Z8 will be the camera for me. In the meantime, my D850 is it for now.
Thanks for watching Leo. I think a lot of people are doing the same thing. Waiting on those Z8 final specs and making a decision from there. I'm sure Nikon know this too and are probably (hopefully) ensuring it's going to be a good allrounder camera. Have a great week my friend, cheers 🙏📸
i own the Z8 and the Z50. Off-course, the Z8 is way better in auto-focus and dynamic range. If i am doing something which is very very important to me or it is paid i would use the Z8. But in that case i am walking around with a large trolly for all lenses and gear. While using the Z50 i only need a small bag which also weights nothing compared to the Z8 setup. Yes the Z50 is not comparable with the Z8 but in reality i use the Z50 overall more than the Z8 although i love the Z8 so much. Especially with the Lightroom 'Noice Reduction' or 'Enhance' feature, the noise is no issue anymore at all when using a DX camera. Would there be an updated Z50 with 'banks' and the auto focus comparable to the Z8? Wow that would be something....
Hi , Given a choice between d7500 and z50 for wildlife/bird photography , what you be your pick? I'm looking at a upgrade after nearly 10 years from d3100.
Hi Adrian, I like the idea of renting gear on a trial basis but there aren't many options here in Aus - can I ask where you went? I'm looking at the Z50 as a lightweight travel option
Your approach to this review resonated with me: civil, fair, balanced…kind even, to the Z50. Refreshing. You also made me feel good, given I only currently have two DSLRs 🤣, including a D850. I have a sneaking feeling 2023 may be the year I add my first mirrorless body…call me the dinosaur. Ha
I’ve got a similar experience. I’ve been shooting with the Z30 (the same as 50 with no EVF) and honestly cannot fit it. I’ve a decent DSLR, newer iPhone 13 and GoPro 10. Where would the Z30 fit? 🤷♂️ no idea, the video while on the move is horrible, both GoPro and iPhone leave it in the dust. Still pics are great but is it worth to spend an enormous amount of money on super expensive lenses that can be had at half price with Sony? Right? Maybe the ZV-e10 is a better option.
I am in the same situation, waiting for the Z70 or Z90 or whatever they call it. I bought my D3300 (second hand, almost brand new despite being an old model) a couple years ago when I started to do photography in a more serious way. The Z50 has been a temptation during the last year, but I knew that, waiting a bit would mean a new ASPC camera with Z9 features. This will allow me to use my current camera to the fullest and make it an even better investment and then buying the new one (probably from someone that will "switch to full frame because my holiday pictures need to be taken in the best camera in the market and crop sensors are for pussies")
Long term Z50 owner here too. Great photos and video, I use it for my channel. Would I buy one now? Nope, unless you need a viewfinder, the Z30 offers more for less (especially for video, like a tally light, power over USB and no 30 min limit). I'm hanging out for the 12-28 DX PZ lens to see if that can keep me in the Nikon ecosystem - in my niche I shoot super wide more often than narrow. I find the FTZ adapter a pain to be honest, as it needs all my quick release bits taken off and on. I can't see a reason to keep this for someone like you either, that's already got a Z7. None of this detracts from the quality of both the video and photos from the Z50 though, that side of it's great. Anyway, keep up the good work.
Great video Adrian! That sounds like a really great deal to hire a camera to try out for a while. I've always wondered about the cost of that. I definitely will be checking that out here. Sounds like a lot of really great things coming from Nikon in near future - probably a good decision not to invest in the Z50 and just save the money for the good stuff on your wish list! Great stuff as always mate. Hope you are doing well and having a great week!
Thanks heaps Paul. Always appreciate you watching. 2023 will see a lot of new cameras and it'll certainly be interesting to see what Nikon start putting out with tech handed down from the Z9. Wonder if they'll pinch the Sony A7RV back LCD screen design? I think what Sony has done with that will eventually become industry standard. You can flip out AND fully articulate which will shut everyone up from wanting just the one but not the other and visa versa 😂 Have a great week mate, cheers and take care 🙏
I bought a Z50 to stick my toe in the mirrorless world. It really works. It's my light and reach camera in my kit with my Z6. Paired with the 12-28 & my 24-200 it gives me a very light kit for travel. It also gets great reach but looks silly how small it is with my 70-200 S.
I agree, Adrian. It's a little late to be investing in a new Z50. Used ones are out there. I sold my Zfc but plan on keeping my Z50 at least until Nikon releases a better APSC camera. I'm skeptical about Nikon releasing a great DX camera like a Z70 or Z90 in 2023 but I would certainly like to see one. I have much more confidence in seeing a Z8 (perfect camera for you!) in 2023 but not too much for people actually being able to buy them. Remember how long it took most folks to get their Z9. I enjoyed your video and found it to be very well put together as always!
Thanks Phil. SO many cameras next year. I'm also looking at the Canon R5II when it comes out. Sony also have a A7000 APS-C coming out that could be a baby A1, should be a good combo with the Sony 200-600mm G lens. Anyway, will sit back and watch next year. My FX glasses works terribly on this. Than I just waited for firmware updates so it can improve but nothing much. Than came Z6, Z7, Z6ii, Z7ii and Z9, still behind all competitors. No hope even in future soon. No Z investment, so just sticking to Nikon DSLR. May be consider switching to Sony or Canon.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Are you sure that you are using it right? I shoot sports with that z50
@@estwern From what he wrote, it's obvious that he doesn't even have any Nikon camera... Let alone using it right or wrong...
