Way back in the 80s, a close family friend died very suddenly at the age of 24. He's played high school and college football, and was the picture of health. He was out with friends, dancing and laughing, when he collapsed so suddenly that everyone thought he was joking. He was found to have had a heart defect that was subtle enough that it had been missed during sports physicals. Years later, my own cousin was close to her due date with her first child when an ultrasound found a hole in her heart. They had to do surgery to correct it, despite the late stage of pregnancy, because of the risk of sudden death during delivery. Mom and baby were fine, and still are all these years later.
It's always a shock when someone so young dies suddenly. Sending condolences to the family.

Running a marathon is one of the hardest things you could do. You have to be in tip top shape, eat right, and train for months. I ran 2 half marathons in Pittsburgh several years ago, and couldn't imagine running another 13.1 miles. The lighter you are the better. And no fast food, soda or sugar.
RIP to the man and sympathy to the family.

Typically when someone this young goes into cardiac arrest, it's an undiscovered heart rhythm problem (like long QT syndrome). 😠 It has NOTHING to do with fast food, soda or sugar. I have run several half-marathons and one full marathon. I consume sugary energy gels the entire way through.

@@MNP208 Correct. There probably was an undiagnosed medical condition that caused his death. But here's something else to take into account. There are also individuals with known cardiovascular issues who take up strenuous exercise regiments in an effort to exercise the condition away. It doesn't work that way though. I've noticed this with ultra marathoners a lot. They're either depressed or have some physical condition that they're trying to ameliorate with over exercising.

Likely cardiac arrest. I've never seen this many before, particularly in young athletic men. Three in my community and two were male marathon runners. But I take your point - it's the new trend these days; I guess it's considered "woke" to just not refer to cause-of-death. At this point, of course, they wouldn't know - but they should at least say that. Though you can be sure that even once they do know, you'll never hear about it.

He opened a beer, took a long draw, lost his balance, fell backward off a 3rd story fire escape onto the sidewalk below, and died instantly. It was a tragic loss of a very talented young chef. I don't think people understand that humidity and exercise are a bad combination.High humidity reduces sweat evaporation, preventing the body from cooling effectively, which elevates internal temperatures and can lead to heat stroke. This elevated temperature strains the heart and veins as they work harder to dissipate heat, increasing the risk of a heart attack.
In my opinion, these events just shouldn't be scheduled when humidity is too high like this.

He may have died from a moderately common occurrence among athletes where their QRS wave (the contraction of the ventricles of the heart) of their EKG falls directly on the T wave (where the heart “resets” itself in preparation for the next heart beat). When this happens, VFib results (where all the muscle fibers of the heart contract independently, instead of together and the heart doesn’t pump any blood.) I’ve read that this condition is more common in athletes (although not “common”. Just more common) because of the increased number and speed of heart beats they experience.

You're not wrong about the mechanism, though I'll challenge you on it being "moderately common among athletes" - good grief, where are you coming-up with that assertion? I can't deny that I'm hearing about it more these days, and when you look at the demographics and adjust for sex & age? It's statistically strange (and unsettling) that we're seeing this predominantly in young male athletes.
Now? Our community is requiring parents to sign waivers about their kids participating in sports, and I'm aware of some communities where they're even requiring male athletes to have cardiac echo's before they're cleared to participate. That's pretty new - you can't deny that all these precautions have to be due to something - and common things being common? It's likely they're due to something becoming more common!

The heart is a complicated organ, and often you won't know something is wrong unless you get lucky and get tested during, right before or right after an abnormal event. It's a lot more likely that the stress from running 22 miles caused his heart issues than any potential vaccine from years ago, but ok continue to believe what you want.

I finished two marathons within 6 months, four months apart just recently and ran 5ks, 10ks and so many half marathons in the last 5 years. I informed both my oncologist and primary doctor of my running plans 5 years ago. They both gave me the go-ahead. I had been training mostly in Zone 2. I made sure I am very hydrated, supplemented, sleep, and eat a good diet. So yes, do blood work, check your heart, and consult a doctor. Do everything before running 26.2 miles.

I was a long distance runner and competitive racer for 24 years. It is always smart to get yourself checked by a physician beforehand, however, sometimes a heart abnormality does not show up. For nearly 20 years I worked in a hospital's cardiac rehab unit; over the years several of my patients were young males who experienced sudden cardiac arrest after running a race. Thankfully, with swift intervention, they all survived a near death experience. Not all are so fortunate-- my sister's husband dropped dead playing basketball at the age of 58. Sudden cardiac arrest. He was probably dead before he hit the floor. No one could revive him; when the paramedics arrived they worked on him for 30 minutes without success.
