- in this video i show you step by step how to make / diy omnidirectional Magic Ruban Speaker, like ribon tweeter, this is a kind of ribbon speaker but with omnidirectional sound and Works Without Enclosure , no speaker crossover, no capacitors, no resistors, no tweeter, no midrange, no midwoofer, no woofer only one driver.
the sound is very amazing of this magical rubanoide homemade speaker, not loud but the midrange is spectacular.

materials used :
- 32 wire gauge
- make turns until getting 6ohm voice coil.
- A4 0.3mm transparent pvc sheet
- Super glue to make voice coil
- Epoxy adhesive to fix coil on ribbon best results
- Neodym magnet for best results

After watching it through, I went back to check out one bit towards the beginning and realized that I had watched most of it all over again.. I commend you for the pacing, which is great for someone with both basic knowlage of this stuff, as well as those far on the ADHD spectrum. Also, the music isn't that overused stock shit that I find on so many commentary-free builds. Cheers

reminds me of my ESS Californian speakers. They were electro static. But you needed 14" woofers all at 400 watts to shake the windows. That was back in the 1977. Now I rock the house with 1000 watt home theater. Good for now as @ 66 need my hearing

Sounds surprisingly good for what it is. It's not a full range though. Basically a mid with a bit of treble.
Bass is out of phase and will cancel out.
Treble response is acceptable, but for bass it can plays loud down to 150hz max, also full range speakers can't play well bass and treble, they're good for midrange reproduction.
At first I wasn't sure how it could be claimed base is out of phase since there's only one coil. But then thought about the two plastic halves. When one is pushed, the other is pulled so that is a point. Could put a baffle on one half.
Could be too that the spacing in this case is just right that depending where you are listening in relation to the speaker the bass doesn't cancel at a fundamental low frequency.
They operate now a a dipole. And because of the shape the high range is extended somewhat. If you let them move in opposite directions they have to create pressure in between the halves. They are not strong enough to do that. With a dipole you don't want to create pressure, you want to create air movement. That's why you need a very light structure that moves easily. he low end only roles off at 6dB/ octave, so with some filtering this can be boosted. Change this to a mono-pole and you'll have to redesign it from the ground up.

I was really tired and busy when I watched this but I did watch it all the way through. It was something to absorb! And I wanted to come back and thank you for documenting this. I'm thinking about it and it's one of the few homemade projects that actually builds the driver instead of assembling drivers into a system. Reducing the crossover to a two-way active really has some advantages. I'm already thinking about refinement and scaling up. This might be one I eventually build. Thank you!

@@incredifunk hello, first build just one and try to improve it, because what i did is just making a prototype, try to use strong magnets, different diaphragm materials, size of coil and diaphragm....

This got me thinking on ways to make a bass speaker to go with this and what I came up with is to find a couple large loops or rather hoops, put something like a bed sheet over one and paint it, put a weight in the center (ballbearing, lg marble?) to make a parabolic, repeat with the other, dry and scew a short iron rod the tip of the cone, repeat with other. Role a coil of speaker wire and put over one rod, use a non conductive glue to glue the two rods ends together, mount the coil (not touching rods) and wood spacers to hold the two hoops in place. Not in that order though. Don't know if I have that quit right, but something like that. Maybe don't paint like a 1/2" near hoop so can flex better, maybe a small rubberband between rod or a plastic rod on one cone? The paint could be like wood glue or polyurathane (stiff) or flex seal or silicon?

@@TempoDrift1480 Oh that would be cool . The one I played through did have a mono sub and 2 stereo mids along with two omnis like this. The stereo separation was mild but that is natural.

@@waydbro1 To be clear when I wrote 'like this' I was referring to ribbon speakers. Specifically electrostatic... Martin Logins with built-in woofers and a single sub to be more specific. I sent the signal into the amplifier they came with.
Some nice out of the box thinking dude. Kinda reminds me of a similar iteration I've seen on the interwebs. Hardly full range, but could be easily scaled up....
This makes a nice effect/affect on the audio. I think is would be cool for drums/percs, and vox.

I really LIKE THIS BUILD!!! WATCHED THE BUILD ONCE AND STARTED ORDERING BAR SUPERMAGNETS. THEN STARTED LOOKING FOR SOURCES OF HARDWOODS AND SHEET PLASTIC... After another 3 views I find Ineed to know magnetic polarity across coil gap. I have been restlessly waiting for your promised 2nd edition so I don't have to use the best calculated educated guess method and possibly have to refinish a hardwood post if wrong... Cool Build!!! When RadioShack was in business, they had a mid-tweeter called "Linaeum" that had 360° sound dispersion. Although I never disassembled one, I suspect this is how it was constructed!!!😁👍🏻
may be yes, because there's a lot of kind of ribon speakers, this project is just a prototype easy to make for my followers, in the future i will show you how to make the exact magnet assembly to get an excelente result.
I have 2 LX5s and 2 LX10s, I also have 2 Linaeums sitting on top of my Fisher 430 Ms, They make a world of difference. I also have 2 more LX5s and 2 more Linaeums Sitting on my EPI Magnus in the Bedroom.
Safe to say I'm a Fan 😂

@@jonathanabrahams7878 Just an interesting note regarding the Linaeum tweeters: I removed the built in non-polarized electrolytic crossover capacitor and used an active (powered) crossover (automotive). There was a huge increase in Soundstage openness and a particular resonant/ringing frequency from the capacitor disappeared. Needless to say, it was a HUUUGE improvement in sound quality!!!😁👍🏻

Fabulous. A small speaker and a physics lesson all in one.
Obviously as this size it will sound 'tinny' but at scale could be excellent for immediacy over a good range without immediate need for crossovers or damping as fall-away will be from the sound source -- well at least in theory.
Years ago I knew Peter Walker OBE, the inventor of the great ELS 57 electrostatic and he would have loved this.

Круто, я в детстве лет в 5-6 включал в радиорозетку, Всё что можно, от электро бритвы до утюга, и слушал ре трансляции, правда с утюгом это было сложно назвать прослушиванием) звук хоть и был, но на самой границе слуха. И даже делал какое- то подобие динамика. Просто брал кольцевой магнит от динамика, мотал несколько витков провода витков 20-30, и примагничевал к простой консервной банке, звук был, правда только у меня, а на всей улице радио точка молчала))
Я в детстве лампочку от советской гирлянды туда втыкал, смотрел светомузыку )

I now have my 1-1/2 dowel rod sliced in half down the middle. I cut a 1/4 inch wide by 1/8 inch deep groove down the middle of both halves of the above mentioned dowel rod and after almost a week, I have 40 small button sized rare earth magnets glued in each half. Which was a serious pain in the ass! Using gorilla glue and a clamp for each magnet. I am using round, soft, clear plastic tubes for mine. Taking my sweet time to make it look beautiful. Cannot wait for this project to be finished!!

You could play around with a thin pice of wood, steam it an make it curved behind the speaker may be kind of fun to play with sound response and directional reflections.
This are linear coils .This is how magneplanar speakers are made ...They have several rows of magnets like those u used .But not required to have a magnet sandwich . Have you tried with just one side magnets .. ? and a better tensioning system for the diaphragm

Era un sistema abierto - hacia adelante y hacia atrás - de paneles o laminas delgadas que emitían el sonido . Era espectacular . Adelantado para sus tiempos . No próspero ; tal vez por no ser considerado acústicamente muy bueno , o por ser muy caro . No investigue al respecto .
Se me vino a la memoria al ver este proyecto individual . Muy interesante . . . y ¡ ya quiero hacerlo !

muchas gracias por tu comentario, soy audiófilo y también vendedor de equipos hifi de segunda mano, enseguida escuché varios parlantes y amplificadores, y vi varias tecnologías en hifi, por todo eso me gusta de vez en cuando armar mis propios altavoces. los talladores son increíbles, lo he tenido, pero realmente necesitas un amplificador de potencia de alta fidelidad de muy alta potencia para escuchar.
Así es hace mucho pero muchos años ya que tengo los cuento yo chupe del panel sonoro creo que así les llamaban acá en Argentina panel sonoro sí Posiblemente no pero por el la calidad de sonido la verdad que ver esto es una belleza saludos
Great design idea, I may make one myself. It would be nice to see the manufacturing done to a higher standard. There's too much glue everywhere. Stained varnished wood and brass fittings would look great.

I wonder if the sound would improve if you lightly stuffed some poly fill inside the “hollow” parts of the speaker. That way you might be able to cancel out some of the sound coming from the inside of those hollow tubes? But I’m sure it would greatly reduce its efficiency and frequency reproduction
yes it's recomended to put some absorbing material inside ribon for good result.
It could be mounted on a pole so that it's well away from touching it.. I'm so excited about experimenting with this! .. I should probably finish my record-cutter and cutter head first though!

Well, that was strangely interesting.. I actually enjoyed watching you build that. I was not sure of the direction you were going, until you opened the plastic film layers up, and I was like "AHHHhhhhhh, I see what he is doing"... Clever setup... By chance, have you run a frequency range on that unit, to see its strengths and weaknesses are, or what bandwidth it can cover? I am curious to know. I realize, what we hear through YT videos, vs what is heard in person are two totally different things, but, from what I hear, it does have a bit of a "tingy" sound to it, which on its own is a horrible sound, but once backed with mid range and a sub woofer, and possibly a tweeter, I bet it will cover allot of the harder midrange that cone speakers fail to keep up with with out cooking themselves off... Well done... Also, How does it do with MALE voice/vocals, and likewise, females voice/vocals... ?

Watched in 4 minutes and can replicate.
Got it down to 4 min by way of 2x playback speed & judicious use of skip forward function.

for that you have to put two rows of magnets. I plan to put a second video showing how to improve the magnetic assembly. normally it must be neodymium magnets placed between two flat irons on each side.

Neodymium magnets with a stronger magnetic field and thicker wire and thicker plastic with possibly a 80 Hertz or lower crossover
Like any other speaker: if you improve low frequencies = you lose some high frequencies 🤕🤕🤕
@@homemade_audio but I bet if you use one of your DIY crossovers to separate the frequencies of each one and made a stereo pair to make it to where you had a smaller one for a tweeter left and right channel and then like this one that you made for maybe mid-range and then a bigger one with thicker material and neodymium magnets for a stronger field most definitely there would be a difference. Theoretically speaking that is. but regardless I would love to see you do that. it would be so awesome to see you create it and see how beautiful it looks 💓

Looks like 30awg copper wire with flexo insulation (brand name.. melts into a Flux at 650°f).

I would appreciate one as well. From the music demos, it sounds like it has very good mid-high and high range response. Needs to be accompanied with a decent woofer and sub, and it would very suitable for a full range hi-fi setup.

Ask for tangible results instead of immediately assuming it’s utter garbage. Also, it isn’t reasonable to compare a DIY project to a $2000 set of speakers.
Obviously this is a homemade project, but it’s based on a tried and true design featured in high tier Hi-Fi equipment. There are dozens of homemade speakers out there that sound excellent, because the person who made it did their research beforehand.

@@eduardoanonimo3031 Agreed. The overall build quality is a bit lacking. I doubt it was intended to last for years, it was definitely put together as a casual hobby project.
I hate to deflate your balloon, but these speakers while good over the mid to upper range do poorly in the low range. If you want really good performance you are much better off doing an active speaker system with active crossover. If you want performance from ~400Hz down to 20Hz you need the stiff large surface area of a cone or carbon honeycomb speaker. Even better than these magnetic driven ribbon speakers are capacitive speakers, although the circuit that drives them is different.
It's just good for general purpose like the small computer speakers they're good for people who don't like bass especially heavy bass, also for shortwave, amateur ham radio,cb radio use where bass makes hearing distant weak reception difficult. All you'd have to do with this speaker is build it bigger and build a crossover for it. Or make a subwoofer version of it, or buy a subwoofer. These would work like the small theatre surround sound TV speakers that you'd need a separate subwoofer.
Realistically; who actually thinks these were designed as low frequency drivers !

IMHO this configuration isn’t very efficient since you’ve an opposition between the two parts of the voice coil. The static field is only in one horizontal direction in your magnetic arrangement, then the ascending current and the descending current in the voice coil acted in opposite ways all the time whatever the sign of the audio signal…
Yes i know, and it's true all what did you say. I had said that i will make an upgrade for magnet assembly.
Normally the magnet assembly must be based on to parts of metal with magnet inside in each side to control the two parts of coil wire.
