  • Rocky Point Holiday was the piece that won the Cadets their first World Championship in 1983. Since then, it became the standard "hype" parking lot warmup in 2000.

Gone but not forgotten. RIP Cadets.

I should point out, with a certain amount of pride, that it was the 1982 Garfield Cadets that debuted Rocky Point Holiday, and the world of drum corps was forever changed.

@usg1945: Cadets played this as the opener to their show in 1982 & 1983 and won their first DCI championship and high brass award with this in 1983. They made it legendary, which is why they still warm up with it 30 years later. If you haven't done so, check out the 83 recording...it's amazing and still one of the best DCI brass performances.

Amazing sound as usual. Garfield consistently has the best brass players. There is actually a late release at :45 which is really unusual for them.

Total game changer in 82 but 83 they just punched you in the face with this then 84 absolute best show in Drum Corps history and I'll fight you over that. Then 85 came with Jeremiah GTFOH. Best 3 year run of all time. Changed the game. I don't want to talk about 87 😔

i love the little "ahh ahh ahh!" he does when he's giving the tempo before they start playing, hahaha.

I LOVE this, especially this recording.
But the cutoff at 0:45 was disappointing..

My goal is to see a DCI show where Cadets does this warm-up. It is indescribable.

What is up with that pianissimo snippet at the end? It just seemed so out of place after the triple forte Fermata. I saw the 1983 original, and I heard that same little snippet, yet it was way louder, although it still seemed out of place. Can somebody who played in the Cadets explain?

Ryan Armitage I love that pp at the end. Very hip in my opinion. I feel it is keeping in character with the Cadets aesthetic.

Actually, the original was in 82, written by Jim Prime. If you listen to the original symphony version, it's in there.

@remington943 DUDE... Seriously...? What I find ironic when I hear what has become The Cadets Signature warm up pump... is that Rocky Point Holiday was composed for 'Wind Ensemble' AND the fact that it has never sounded better being blown out by ALL BRASS. Not sure if many remember '83 when Garfield blew the face off DCI with this opener! I was marching then, and the first time I saw their show in June, I was like... OMG... that is F'n insane... Insane I say! By Aug it was so tight

I wonder if anyone has tried to determine which Cadet Horn line played Rocky Point Holiday the best? ( my guess - 2000, the Mellos were impeccable)

I played Rocky Point Holiday in high school at competition. We won everywhere we went, and felt pretty good about it. Now I find out that the Cadets did it as a warm up the same year! A warm-up!!!!!!!

Man, as a fan of PR, BD, and the Cavies, I love to hate Garfield*. But as a fan of drum corps their 83 show was memorable and fantastic. I forgot how good it was. Thanks for the reminder. Nice horn work.
