Thanks for this great video! It's so inspiring to hear you praising the old mass. I grew up with the Novus Ordo and I know all the problems of it. Now I attend the TLM of a FSSP parish and it has opened a new world for me. I am so at peace during the mass. I love the homilies. I love receiving the Lord kneeling and on the tongue. I love the prayers. I love Latin. The people attending mass are friendly and respectful, many young people, families, young kids and old people as well. And the two FSSP priests who are in this parish are really great. Friendly, humble, calm and very clear in explaining the faith. God bless! :-)

As someone who attended my first traditional Mass that I remember in 1979 {in the catacomb days} I really have to say how heartened I am by your generations' approach to our Holy Catholic Faith. When I attended that Mass so many years ago It had me at Introíbo ad altáre Dei, and I have been a promoter ever since. My comrades and I often joke that if parishes were honest the youth Mass would be the traditional Mass. God bless you and your generation for awakening to the truths and beauty of our Faith.

I live in Birmingham Alabama. There are no latin mass services near me or in the area. I think the the cathedral downtown may include some latin though. Its a long drive for me but I do love the beauty of that old beautiful building.

Kelly, Blessed Sacrament In Birmingham offers Latin Mass every day, and a Latin High Mass every Sunday at 1045. It is in a beautiful historic building preserved by many families that don’t live in the area. It is in a rough area on the West End, but there is always a cop outside and a huge congregation. I suggest going to a 1045 mass when you get a chance. The choir is beautiful and the priest is excellent. If you cant make it there, I would suggest the Cathedral in downtown Birmingham , the EWTN Chapel in Irondale, or St Theresa in Leeds. They are all very reverent. The EWTN and The Cathedral formerly performed Latin mass on occasion but are unable to now due to the restrictions. Any of these would be excellent options. God Bless You.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem, a far greater Catholic than either you or I, reverently described communion in the hand… and he lived 1500 years closer Jesus than either of us.
St. Thomas Aquinas never once attended the TLM that you know. He lived hundreds of years before Pius V. He never heard the prayers at the foot of the altar that you are familiar with.
As to Gregorian chant, that was lost from the Mass for hundreds of years. Pius X restored that in the early 20th century. Masses for hundreds of years before that were classical music and polyphony. The abbey of Solesmes helped Pius X restore Gregorian chant, which had close to disappeared.

Oh man. I haven't been able to attend the Tridentine mass for over a month now, I can't wait to get back! I definitely agree with most of what you said, I especially love the altar rails. However, there's something that really bugs me about what you said about the Communion on hand. So I would like to note that receiving on tongue should definitely be the more acceptable way of receving Our Lord, HOWEVER, Communion on hand is still a valid way of receiving the Sacrament, whether a simple traditional catholic wants it or not. Anyway, I love how you mentioned that TLM is the mass of the Saints, really awesome when you think about it!

I go to the NO because I can't get to a TLM, but I can't imagine there being a legit extraordinary circumstance where someone without consecrated hands would touch the Eucharist and require communion. Even if there are any legit reasons, it was never meant to be the main way of recieving. Thankfully my priest and at least one other priest in the area allows communion on the tongue (and the're starting to use a patton!) The only thing I can't stand otherwise is shaking the hand at the sign of peace. I did NOT miss that in the past two years when it was suspended during COVID!

Ok. So I was a eucharistic minister for about a year and once I learned about how it's a form of desecration and only consecrated hands of the priest should touch the body of Jesus, I was shocked and stopped being an em at mass. However, I do still take it to those in nursing /retirement homes because the priests in my parish WONT take it because of how busy their schedules are! So I see it as if not the priest then who? They need to receive the eucharist and its not like they can get up and leave the nursing home. I've been so concerned about this and can't seem to figure out what to do. To take it or not to take it??? If you have any words of wisdom I'd greatly appreciate it.

Praise God for your humility to recognise and stop immediately from continuing as an em. On a side note, just curious, did you also about a year ago in retrospect somewhat put in more effort to pray the holy rosary daily or cultivate another kind of devotion to Our Lady? :)

    • @tonyl3762
      @tonyl3762 2 роки тому +2

I decline to be an EM too, but I think we need to stop talking about consecrated body parts. No one's tongue is consecrated either. And a blanket condemnation of communion in the hand is to condemn St Cyril of Jerusalem and all those he taught how to receive communion. Communion on the tongue was a later development in the broad history of 2000 yrs.

Great video! I actually prefer the Novus Ordo Mass IF (big IF) it is done right and reverently (and in Latin). The thing is, most of the things you mentioned (except for the sign of peace) actually should be present in the NO Mass. The problem is that there is too much freedom in the rubrics, which TLM doesn't have. But I believe more and more people will come to recognise the beauty of the tradition the NO is meant to be celebrated in. The lukewarm happy-clappy NO churches will die out because literally no new people are going there; it's just the 'spirit of V2' people who have Mass that way..

@@admiralbob77 The TLM as a whole has much more of the scriptures. Holy Week has all four gospels read in their entirety. The NOM does not. The Divine Office has a single week cycle of the psalms in the TLM, not a 4 week cycle as the NOM. The Divine Office has 8 hours, the NOM has 5. The TLM Mass has tracts and much more frequent sequences that are chalked full of the scriptures. The increased scripture in the totality of the NOM Liturgy is a myth.

Attending the Traditional Latin Mass is something that I've never attended in my life but I'm very open minded on attending the Traditional Latin Mass and whenever I attend the Novus Ordo mass, I try to say some of the prayers in Latin like the sign of the cross and so on but sometimes liberal things start getting out of control and I try to maintain my traditional and conservative Catholic views and beliefs and not let anything liberal stand in my way. Even Pope Saint Pius X had a problem with modernism and liberalism and this is what he said when he was Pope, "Modernism is the synthesis of all heresies." Which means he had no tolerance for it and he condemned it. And I for one commend him for what he said.

Everything you said is bang on.
I was a performing rock guitarist and singer for 20 years but always thought the NO mass had terrible music. My brothers and I used to laugh during mass ( we had to conceal that as best we could) at how bad the music was when we were kids growing up.
I went to my first Latin mass 3 years ago and within 2 seconds of the mass starting, hearing the choir and seeing the priest sprinkle us with holy water I could have almost cried. I thought to myself....” I’m 50 years old and for the first time I believe I’m experiencing a true reverent Catholic mass.
I joined the parish the next year. Everyone is dressed up, respectful, reverent. It’s hard to compare the 2 different masses. I know there are reverent NO masses out there but I want the “real” thing.
Keep up the great work. At 22 I was a cafeteria Catholic playing the clubs. I could have had a much better Catholic life in my early adult years but music took over. If I had your attitude I probably would have had a more balanced life with a holy marriage and family.
    Cheers...

I’m not Catholic, but I love it and I’m learning a lot. I’m relatively new at spotting Eucharistic/liturgical abuses tho. If a priest is taking consecrated hosts from one “bowl” to another for the “Eucharistic ministers”, and he uses his hands like moving chips from one bowl to another by the handful, is this abuse? I’ve seen this a lot at Novus Ordo. Seems disrespectful at the least.

Good video; I altar served a couple of TLM Masses, I’ve sung in the choir. I love the beauty and the structure.
On that, I frequently attend the Novus Ordo (mostly for Cantoring during the school year) and I saw a couple of things to address:
#1a. Deacons in Canon Law are ordinary ministers of Communion; their hands are not consecrated during their ordinations. I don’t know wholly of that point stands, as much as I understand where you are coming from.
#1c. While not implemented properly, the sign of peace is drawn from ancient times in the Church and is was to be reimplemented directly according to SC in the Second Vatican Council
#1e. I understand the point of drawing inspiration from the devotion of others, but this does not stand and I think dangerously generalizes the capability of reverence and faith within the crowd of people who attend NO; I absolutely believe that TLM encourages/structures this better for someone but I don’t think it’s fair to generalize the Lot of Catholics attending the Novus Ordo.
#2a. Carlo Acutis was born post-conciliar and it’s possible he attended the NO in his own country; I’m not dismissing any of the Saints you noted but there’s many more in this road who’s footsteps one can follow Liturgically and be a Great Saint
#3. As someone who cantors I agree with the need for reverent music; Vatican II esteems both the organ and Gregorian Chant, however it also doesn’t exclude the use (oughtly reverently of course) of other instruments nor labels them as inappropriate. Read Psalm 150 for some extra food for thought on that.
Vernacular hymns are certainly different from the Latin, but as a cantor I’d argue that proper vernacular hymns can be equally theologically/spiritually meditative.
#6. I’m sorry to hear that; I think the stigma comes from Latin Mass being foreign and ancient for new agers. I would say there is a perception even among the Latin Mass goers that people who consistently embrace it as their liturgy are nitpicky and rigid towards others who do not attend, and there’s fewer frequent attendees of the Latin Mass who I haven’t gotten that vibe from. I think you will get that on both ends because both are going against the norms of the other, but there are many who prefer traditionalism who note that the Latin Mass community does not necessarily create a sense of welcoming for non-attendees.
#9. That absolutely will depend on the Priest, and I think to generalize this again it’s dangerous.
That’s just some stuff; the other stuff I think you’re pretty accurate on 👍
I think you’d enjoy Spirit of the Liturgy by Pope (hopefully Saint Soon) Benedict XVI. You should take a look if it’s something that intrigues you.

The following is from the book “God is Near Us” (Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Ignatius Press, 2001).
“If we read what the Fathers say, we can see in what spirit of reverence they received Communion. We find a particularly fine passage in the writings of Cyril of Jerusalem, from the fourth century. In his catechetical homilies he tells the candidates for baptism what they should do at Communion. They should make a throne of their hands, laying the right upon the left to form throne for the King, forming at the same time a cross. …which becomes a throne, down into which the King inclines himself” (p.70).
Both means of receiving the Blessed Sacrament (tongue or hand) should be met with the utmost reverence.

It saddens me to see it, but I don't want to stop attending, it is been my community for years. And I am a youth leader here, and have lots of responsabilities. Plus TLM is really far away

I really think you really would benefit from watching some Michael Lofton on various traditional topics. No one's tongue is consecrated to receive Jesus either. So "consecrated body parts" makes very little sense, strictly speaking. I receive on the tongue usually, but I think it's important the reasons we give are actually sound and logical. There is nothing intrinsically wrong or desecrating about receiving on the hand; great and ANCIENT saints did this (cf St Cyril of Jerusalem). But for our time and culture it is much more appropriate, reverent, and prudent to receive on the tongue.
Pianos and organs are inappropriate liturgical instruments?? The ancient Israelites used a wide variety of instruments in their worship of Yahweh (which probably continued into 1st c Judaism, i.e. the time of Jesus?). Not saying they or the Old Testament should set the standard for us, but again, I think we have to be careful not to go to extremes or make blanket condemnations of any or all instruments.
Does the priest act "in persona Christi" at mass or not? If so, is there anything intrinsically wrong with the priest facing the people as the person of Christ? Anyone ever brought up this point to you? Is it not at least worth considering?
What about all the rites in the Catholic Church that do NOT use the Latin language? Are their masses less sacred for their lack of Latin?

It is not a matter of "right or wrong" it's a matter of "tradition". The Church has and will continue to evolve and some traditions can be modified. However, one must NEVER forget that whether you receive in the hand or on the tongue, the eucharist IS the TRUE BODY, BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY of our Lord and Davior JESUS CHRIST. I just feel like receiving the Eucharist is more respectful on the tongue and kneeling. Just think about how you will greet Jesus when you finally meet Him face to face. Will you remain standing or will you kneel or maybe prostrate yourself at His feet. The Catholic Church has always interpreted the traditions handed down from our apostles. Receiving on the tongue was traditional at an early period in the Church. The second Vatican council made some modifications to the oldest traditions but not by any means to minimize the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It is very acceptable to receive the Eucharist on the tongue or in the hand as long as you believe that you are participating in receiving the True Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. Hope that answers your question. God Bless you.

Why is the priest the only one who should be able to touch Jesus Christ truly present in the Eucharist?
    I’m asking in sincerity.
Coming from a Protestant background, I don’t understand this. Because all kinds of ppl touched Jesus when he was here on Earth with us. And it healed them.
I don’t understand why we shouldn’t be able to hold him now. Isn’t that kind of the point?
Also, in the early church, bread was broken and eaten meal style.. people would literally bless a loaf and then each person would break off a piece of the loaf and pass it.

    • @Brandonthesnifferofall
      @Brandonthesnifferofall 8 місяців тому +1

Also here from a Protestant background.. recently converted.
I by no means know the best answer here.
I can only tell you what I’ve been taught and seems to be correct to me.
The priest represents Christ giving the Eucharist, to us.
He washes/cleans his hands and says a prayer blessing them before giving of the Eucharist. Making them clean to touch the body of Christ.
The Priest emulating Christ in the last supper, giving of body and blood. Makes his hands clean.
I know my hands aren’t clean enough, it is also tradition that’s been lost.
“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself “
      1 Corinthians 11:27-29
I wouldn’t touch early Church teachings as a Protestant yet.
Learn more about the Catholic faith 1st.
Remember Protestant churches picked and chose what they wanted from the complete Catholic faith.
The more you learn the more you’ll understand.
Find out what your original faith was founded in, trace that back and you’ll run into the what it’s grounded in.
The Latin Mass is correct too but father down your path.
      You don’t change a 1500 year tradition.
      God bless you.

Got to disagree with you on Gregorian vs hymns. I sing in the choir at a TLM and of course we do Gregorian for the liturgy itself, but we sing an entrance hymn in English or Latin, a communion hymn which has to be Latin, and then a recessional hymn in English or Latin. For the Assumption this year we're singing the Cum Jubilo Mass, but we'll also sing Arcadelt's Ave Maria, Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus and Hail Holy Queen Enthroned Above. All beautiful hymns. Our choir isn't skilled enough to sing it, but Allegri's Miserere Mei is, in my opinion, the most beautiful piece of music ever written, far more beautiful than Gregorian chant and completely appropriate for the Mass.
