Alan's appeal--besides his astounding work--is his ability to make photography fun. The sense of playfulness in these videos is a welcome departure from that self-serious vibe we sometimes fall into. Thank you for this channel.
Photograph is supposed to be fun. It's not brain surgery or building a walkway at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City. A mistake has minimal consequence in photography.
7:51 so perfect and funny. This is my favorite new photography channel of 2023, it has it all: humor, great guests, amazing advice, beautiful images. Thanks, Alan.
As a French, I almost had a stroke when I saw you bite the baguette in the middle. I am not sure I will ever recover from this vision of hell. I never suspected such violence to exist.
Great video - my wife and I have only been Paris a few times but I share your love and enthusiasm for the city. I love your photo of the accordion player with the cat - I took a similar photo of the same guy 2 years ago and it is one of my favorites from the trip!
In France the photographer owns the copyright of his photo. There is the artistic freedom in public places, which means you can photograph whoever you want. Freedom of artistic expression takes precedence over the simple desire of a person who does not wish to see their image broadcast. After publication, the person photographed can have the distribution of a photo condemned: - when the image of the person is contrary to their dignity - when the person demonstrates that the broadcast causes “particularly serious consequences”
Hi Alan, No non non, the copyright belongs to the photographer in France...it's called "les Droits d'auteur.." so what you claim at 5:48 is totally incorrect... Also you do have a freedom of artistic expression and/or freedom to inform (ie journalism) to take pictures in the street of people and as such as long as you don't photographe someone in a private place but in a public place and on the condition that it is not an infringement of their human dignity and that the picture can't cause prejudice to them. I'm both French & British but have lived and worked as a photographer in France most of my adult life...
This is such a relief! An a fantastic way to explain it. This always makes me so nervous..I think it's similar in Switzerland. Anyone happens to know more?😅
Very enlightening comment. Would you know if people seated at a cafe's outdoor tables be considered private? If outside the cafe is ok, what about inside? Are these private or public places when it comes to photography?
Public is considered anywhere where the public can access unimpeded. So café terrace or interior is fair game.. unless it’s a private event, and then if you are invited l guess you just need to ask..@@AlexSegre
This is the only channel that has actually captured what photography is like inside of circle of (photo) friends. Sometimes we grab a coffee, sometimes a drink (or 10), most of the time we're laughing and sometimes when we're lucky enough we get some great photos.
Thank you for introducing Matt Stuart. I hadn't heard of him and went down a rabbit hole learning about his work and buying his book on street photography.
Hilarious + informative video = great combo. Champagne + absinthe = (you apparently learned) bad idea gone wrong. Moved to France last year. The people may be aware of the camera and proprietary about their image, but there was a major photography exhibit in almost every city we have visited and I have even found that people and even cars will sometimes stop so as not to interrupt my shot. Magnifique!
Much appreciated! You are absolutely right regarding the drinks. I have found Paris a very agreeable place to photograph, as you said, as long as politeness is extended it is returned in my experience.
Leica Sun! Fantastic video. Funny, I was thinking as I watched that your videos are the perfect balance of photography gold and Top Gear humor, and then you showed your video inspiration !!
If anyone ever embodied the essence of the concept that the journey is as important as the destination, then surely it is Alan Schaller. Taking the photograph is as important and interesting as the actual photo. Very interesting and helpful content, humourously presented, and great fun.
Alan, for a guy who takes incredible artistic photos, I love how much fun you have. A reminder that you can take something serious while having fun. Especially love the lit croissant. Kudos to you and thank you.
So you're considering moving to Paris and staying with us? That's great! Your videos are so entertaining and inspiring, with amazing photos. And your British humor is just the cherry on top!
Amazing content as always. It's so inspiring. What I think it's great of your videos is that they are not a tutorial. They just show your process (in a very funny way) and I get inspiration to go out and take my photos and develop my own process. Thanks and cheers from Italy.
I was always on le fence with Alans work. Then just yesterday I was told the story of a whole load of books melting on a Dubai runway, followed by watching these timeless tips on blending in with les gens ordinaires de Paris. I'm now hooked and look forward to learning how to blend in in other places like Wigan & Mablethorpe. il est bon vivant!!!!
Alan, I have today collected Metropolis from Waterstones. I am just about to throw my camera in the trash. Bloody marvellous. We briefly met a few years ago at the Leica gallery in the City. Well done.
I hit the like button, laughing in the first 15 seconds. And then spent the rest of the video regretting that there weren't MORE like buttons available.
Alan keen eye for composition and storytelling through images is truly inspiring. Every frame tells a story, making the streets of Paris come alive through his lens. 🖤❤️
I love your videos it IS not olnly about photography but you are so spontanius and funny at the same time you go straight to the point and we learn a lot from your videos, please continue inspiring and making us laugh with your great videos !
I'm really enjoying the channel. I've been a flickr insta follower of yours for a while but lost inspiration in my own photography, so your utube venture has kick-started my interest. Cheers.
Leica...SUN! I'm debating how, and if to start a UA-cam channel and coming across yours is so inspiring. I love the hilarity it's so nice to breathe that breath of fresh air. Not to mention I love your photos and editing style. Copy cat coming at you soon. ;)
A Brit in Paris Hola Alan your video is top, finally a different format with humor, I've been following you on social media for a long time and find your street photography super thanks. Ps: I think your book Metropolis is great, it has an honorable place in my showcase.
Thanks Alan! In the old times I smoked a cigarette to relax in between two chores. Now I watch your broadcasts. So much healthier, more humour, and entertainingly. Only downside is that I don't finish my chores in time anymore.....😂 Au revoir Mr Leica
Once again, so much fun. Would love to be on a photo walk with you. Anyone that goes to the bar after shooting, my kind of person. Come to Detroit please.
Alan's appeal--besides his astounding work--is his ability to make photography fun. The sense of playfulness in these videos is a welcome departure from that self-serious vibe we sometimes fall into. Thank you for this channel.
So true....😊👍
Photograph is supposed to be fun. It's not brain surgery or building a walkway at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City. A mistake has minimal consequence in photography.
💯! He is amazing

If that upset your French heritage, no wonder France lags behind..
Great video - my wife and I have only been Paris a few times but I share your love and enthusiasm for the city. I love your photo of the accordion player with the cat - I took a similar photo of the same guy 2 years ago and it is one of my favorites from the trip!
Leica ... Sun :)))) ... great photos and fun to watch, like always

thx for this clarification! ^^
That's true. We're just grumpy Parisians :D

If you speak French there are several videos by lawyers who explain it.. look for droits à l’image and droits d’auteur @@ouna2893

@@garethdwatkins Thank you for clarifying this point. It's good to know how they differentiate and seems to make sense.
Alen just want to say thank you. It is not just the fantastic photography it is you that put a smile on my face.
This is the only channel that has actually captured what photography is like inside of circle of (photo) friends. Sometimes we grab a coffee, sometimes a drink (or 10), most of the time we're laughing and sometimes when we're lucky enough we get some great photos.
The absolute greatest theme tune of any channel.
You make the only fun and lighthearted street photography videos. Lots of laughs every time I watch one. Never change 🙏
Thank you for introducing Matt Stuart. I hadn't heard of him and went down a rabbit hole learning about his work and buying his book on street photography.

Fantastic photography, along with a fantastic sense of humor.
Nothing makes me want to go out and take photos like your videos!

So good, so hilarious, so light and serious. You are at your best. No tutorial. Man it was good.
Allan ! My good man, we want, we NEED ! more MOAAAARRRR of your videos !!!
Another great video, love that the favourite photo is of steps and a wall. Amazed the shots the M10 can get in such low light as well.
You are one of the world wonders, Alan. Such an enjoyable watch.
Merry Christmas!
1:30 Croissant on fire! Great video Alan, thanks for making these :)
Alan, for a guy who takes incredible artistic photos, I love how much fun you have. A reminder that you can take something serious while having fun. Especially love the lit croissant. Kudos to you and thank you.
Every one of these videos is just so good and I love the sillyness with amazing pictures mixed in
Hop la! Another very pleasing moment watching this video
So you're considering moving to Paris and staying with us? That's great! Your videos are so entertaining and inspiring, with amazing photos. And your British humor is just the cherry on top!
Is he English? His accent doesn't seem to be an English one. His last name seems like a German one.
His accent is very British, @@Anon54387 🤐
An amazing photographer and also entertaining!!! But don’t let the relaxed manner fool you, he is one of the most talented photographers of our time….

Super fun, informative, and inspiring video. Perhaps one of the best in the series. Thanks for your hard work putting this together.
Wonderful Paris, love it.
Great content with alittle help from your friends! Steller video

Mind you I was watching on a 65" tv.

Love it. I’m usually self conscious when in Paris about fitting in. Alan you’ve showed me that I can not give a shit. 😂
