So, ironic that in the first video with Michael Jordan, he's shown being guarded by Danny Ainge, who ACTUALLY played 2 major league sports: Ainge played a few seasons with the Blue Jays before joining the Celtics...
Bjørn Wirkola - Norwegian whom is recognised as one of the best ski jumpers of all time, whilst also being a rather sucsessful professional soccer player, winning both the Norwegian cup and the league with Rosenborg in 1971. He was also crowned the league top scorer that year.
Like i genuinley dont care about any of his acomplishments if his heads shaved ontop of being named bjorn. Like homie better really overcompensate or hes just not a human.
Don't forget that Hayley Wickenheiser and Clara Hughes were excellent multi-sport athletes. Clara is one of few Olympians ever to win a medal in both Winter and Summer Olympics, in Speed Skating and Cycling respectfully.
His doctor said just about anyone else in that incident would have strained his hip but no was so strong he ripped it out of the socket......and then popped it back in himself.
I'm honestly surprised WatchMojo had the knowledge to put Jim Thorpe as #1. For all those people thinking Bo should have been #1, do your research on Thorpe then answer this question again. Thorpe was Bo before Bo's parents were even alive.
No it's not as I thought so when I saw ur comment after watching the video I remember all the crazy shit he did (while paving the way for Native Americans) so Bo comes in as basically 1a
Lev Yashin is the best football goalkeeper of all time was a perfect ice hockey goalkeeper. and Vsevolod Bobrov was USSR football champion. And Olympic games gold medalist in ice hockey. how can you forget about these outstanding people?
Bo Jackson Didn't Choose baseball just because the royals won it all the year before. The Tampa Bay Bucs, invited him to a meeting when he was still in college, thus being illegal, and he was suspended from the last season of baseball at Auburn. The bucs hoped to get him to not play baseball, So they drafted him 1st overall, but he declined to sign with them and went for the MLB draft instead. Check your shit Watch Mojo.
Ian Harper Nice to see someone knows something. Watchmojo is garbage. I think they purposely troll us with their lists to get conversation going and traffic to their channel. It's like a Liberal watching Fox News( or conservative watching MSNBC). They yell at the TV in disagreement.
You forgot to mention Charlie Ward winning a national championship for F.S.U.'s football team. He was a joy to watch play. As far as Deion Sanders is concerned, you should've showed the film of his game winning interception in the F.S.U vs Auburn Sugar Bowl. It was so clutch!
I questioned it to an d went back to listen to qualifications again. They specifically said lower level minor leagues. Since the WS's put him in AAA straight away he was technically high tier minors.
The Michael Jordan situation is rather a hard one to chose. The Chi Sox were owned by the Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf. He was honoring Jordan's contract during the "retirement". Probably the only reason he was chosen for the Fall League with being just above the Mendoza Line is due to the strike. And Danny Ainge is the only one to play in the NBA and MLB.
Joaquin Rojas Tineo finally I was searching for this comment smh we are so deep in the comments sections damn a two different hall of fames is unbelievable the most impressive part his entire volleyball career was as a retired nba player
watch mojo u have truly out done yourself, going through all that info and then presenting it all in one single video. You truly are one of..... no u are my most favourite UA-cam channel. thnx for everythin
gosh, no mention of Danny Ainge. Danny Ainge was actually great at 3 sports. The only player in history to be all american in 3 sports. Wow, you guys blew it big time putting people who are great at 1 sport and sucked at the others...
Don’t forget that while Jordan was playing baseball he helped the looney tones beat an alien basketball team. I think that makes him the best of all time.
Kirk Gibson should be on here, most underrated multi sport athlete ever! Dominated college football and made the Hall of Fame there, was a consensus top 5 pick in the NFL draft but chose baseball, went to baseball and made multiple All Star teams and won an MVP. He was an absolute freak of an athlete that doesn't get the attention that he deserves!
+newthrash1221 I like soccer but ive never seen Europe produce a Bo Jackson or LeBron James calibur athlete. America produces freaks of nature and has for a very long time (way before steroids since I know someone will bring that up) Australia is starting to rival (Jarryd Hayne, Ben Simmons)
Well. the best soccer players, from europe or other parts of the world, are incredible athletes, being superior to anyone else in the highest competion there is in sport - for soccer is by far the most performed sport in the world. Maybe you have a different definition of an "athlete", though.
I say Deion Sanders (Football, Baseball, and Athletics), Bo Jackson (Baseball and Football), Hayley Wickenheiser (Softball and Hockey), and Clara Hughes (Cycling and Speed Skating) are the four greatest high performance multi athletes ever.
Ya Thorpe definitely has the most impressive resume. Dave Winfield is a guy who didn't even make the list who should be considered up there with Bo and Thorpe. He was a HOF Right Fielder, but he was actually drafted as a pitcher, being one of the best pitchers in his draft class. He was also a star basketball player at Minnesota, and was drafted by both the NBA and the ABA. He was also drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. He is one of only two people who have been selected in the draft of four different pro organizations. Prob the most underrated multisport athlete of all time. Elway was another guy who is underrated.
Dave Winfield was a hell of an athlete.... In college he lettered in baseball ,basketball, and football... SIGNED with the San Diego Padres and had a Hall of Fame career...

Yup, all Americans. In New Zealand alone we've had George Nepia, who was similar to your number one, as the first prominent Maori athlete, he played Rugby for the national rugby team known as the All Blacks, and that particular team known as the Invincibles, and also played Rugby League for our national team. Then there are a few who represented New Zealand in both Rugby and Cricket, Jeff Wilson being the most notable but there were others before him I believe, and then there's Sonny Bill Williams, world champion in Rugby and Rugby League, and has also been trying his hand at professional boxing. And I'm sure there are Brits who have represented their country in both either Rugby and Cricket or Football and Cricket. There's Australians and other European and even possibly South American or South African athletes who have also had success in two sports. Maybe you could have done an all American top ten and a Rest of the World top ten?
One of your own cricketers Suzie Bates was in the Tall Ferns in the 2008 Olympics. Over here in Australia we have Ellyse Perry, the only Australian to compete in two Senior World Cups (FIFA World Cup and ICC Cricket World Cup).
Ellyse Perry should be on this list since she's played at the highest level for both sports she represented Australia for in Football and Cricket but Watchmojo dont do enough research to know these things. she won a Cricket World Cup in 2013 and played in the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2011 making it to the Quarter Finals certainly more successful than some on this list for the multiple sports she's played
I never understand how a list on this topic can be made without mentioning Christa Luding-Rothenburger. she won Olympic medals in 1988 in the winter AND the summer games as an ice skater and cycler.
Not that well known outside of Finland maybe, but Tapio Rautavaara won an olympic gold medal in Javelin throw and european championship (team competition) in archery. He was also a successful singer and actor after his sports career. Also, some top level sprinters have had quite a successful career in bobsleigh as well.
TBH his baseball career is far more impressive than most people realise. The guys he played with spent their whole lives playing baseball and even though wasn't good at first, he actually managed to get a lot better and was doing ok towards the end. That is impressive.
Good list. I would have added Bob Gibson (MLB pitcher Creighton basketball player, went on to play for the globetrotters) and Wilt Chamberlain (NBA Center, Track and Field star, Volleyball).
what about Nasser al-attayah, did rallying and Olympic shooting bronze medallist; also alex zanardi, he did motor racing and Paralympic handbike after his accident.
I trained 2 years martial arts, 8 years football and basketball both and i played sports with friends all day. Now i have a big problem, i dont know what to do... I love all. And i have only 15 years
He will never make the Big Show at age 29. Tebow's prime ability will deminish as he ages. He's stiff and his throwing mechanics are horrible. Tebow still throws a baseball like a football
......I was being a troll lol. But I love Tebow for who he is, a great guy, devoted catholic and family man and I've been following him since the year he won the heisman but I do sadly admit he wasn't great at football and probably won't be in great in baseball either.
Josh Poirier That is okay.We all have a little troll in ourselves. Tebow is a phenomenal athlete. I'd like to see succeed in Football because I hear he is a wonderful person. He should give the CFL a try. It may not pay much, but it is a pro league, the game is more exciting than the NFL. The CFL game would help him immensely with his style of play. Right now the CFL is hurting for good quality quarterbacks. He'd have not problem adjusting. Many cheers to you.
I really agree, I wish he just did CFL but tbh I can live with the baseball. I just hope he has some success because he is a phenomenal person in every way possible
Finally what Bo Jackson did is more impressive than Jim Thorpe. It just boggles the mind that just 25 years ago someone could be so great at the NFL and MLB at the same time. What Thorpe did was so long ago and I don't sports were as competitive back then.
Warren Nelson word, but they should still get drafted. That's like the john wooden or Naismith player of the year not getting drafted to the NBA or the McDonald's All-American game MVP not getting any scholorships
Yo Charlie Ward would have been drafted but said he didn't intend to sign with an NFL team if he wasn't a 1st round choice which he believed himself to be which is why he opted for pro basketball
I see the Eurotrash are trying to act like standing around and lightly jogging for a few minutes at a time for an hour and a half makes you a better athlete than guys who crash into each other on ice skates, run and jump and dive, or running and jumping, throwing and kicking, tackling and blocking is more intense and makes you a better athlete.
bjchit you put it with too much emphasis but yeah soccer players are not elite athletes only bale and Ronaldo are something but not nfl and nba standards in some aspects
a few other notables: Danny Ainge (MLB and NBA) Stephen Neal (NCAA Wrestling and NFL, champion in both) Jhavid Best (Olympic Track and NFL) Antonio Gates/Tony Gonzalez (NCAA Basketball, NFL)
What Bo Jackson did was much more impressive than Jim Thorpe considering it was so modern. Jim Thorpe would struggle in any major sport today as athletes are much bigger, faster, and stronger now. What Thorpe did was impressive for his time but high schoolers today could run circles around him.
in all likelihood, Jim Thorpe would have been built physically of the time just as Bo Jackson or any other athlete does. Modern nutrition, modern weight programs, etc.
then put highschoolers of today back a century ago, get raised, trained and feeded the same way as people back then and see if they "run circles" around Thorpe. Or bring Jim Thorpe as a child here, give him the modern conditions and see what he is able to achieve... Or transfer the athletes of today 100 years in front from now and see how they will compete. And if you CAN'T do that, you should better consider that the only measure for greatness can be the achievement in ones own time. Or was Charles Lindbergh not a great pilot because he didn't cross the atlantic with a modern type airplane or Aristoteles or Leonardo da Vinci not great geniuses because some of their theories turned out to be wrong in modern science with all its steadily growing possibilities? Well, this point is no point actually.
I guess we're glazing over the fact that Herschel was also a world class track star who raced against Carl Lewis and others at the '83 Indoor National Championship.
Jim Thorpe is the greatest athlete ever Olympic runner that one 2 gold medal and was a football player and baseball and basketball and was a all star in all the sports that he played
Manny Pacquiao is a boxer and basketball player world champion in 8 weight classes. Russell Wilson is a 3x Pro Bowler so far as a quarterback, and was drafted by the MLB.
I think Clara Hughes should be on the list. She is the only athlete male or female to ever win multiple medals at both the summer and winter olympics. And she did it between 1996-2010, so it was in modern times which makes it even more impressive.
Mookie Betts: Baseball and Bowling Jeff Samardzija: Baseball and Football Just a few names... :) Anyone know any other multi-sport MLB players? (Current and Past)
A few additions - worthy of honorable mentions: David Debusschere: New York Knicks / Detroit Tigers; Danny Ainge: Boston Celtics / Toronto Blue Jays; and Chuck Connors: Boston Celtics / Brooklyn Dodgers - and TV's "The Rifleman". (He was also drafted by the Chicago Bears, but never suited up for them.)
Ian Botham was the Captain of the England Cricket team. He got injured so to recover from injury and get fit he joined Scunthorpe United FC (football aka soccer) and played 11 times for Scunny. He is the only Scunthorpe United player ever to captain England. Even if it was at Cricket and not the National Soccer Team. Chris Doncaster, England
Rob Waddell - a retired rower, 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist in single sculls rowing who is a current Team New Zealand crewman as a grinder, he also played rugby union as a lock. He still holds world indoor rowing machine record time over 2000m and 5000m. from Wikipedia how can someone like this not mate the list???
So, ironic that in the first video with Michael Jordan, he's shown being guarded by Danny Ainge, who ACTUALLY played 2 major league sports: Ainge played a few seasons with the Blue Jays before joining the Celtics...
I'm not a big fan of Ainge, but I noticed that as well. I think Ainge should possibly have made the Top 10 & if not, for certain Honorable Mention.
I believe Ainge is also the only person to be a first team all-American in basketball, football, and baseball.
I've never even heard of the Canadian guy but I kinda feel like he should be higher up. Pro hockey, football, baseball and boxing?? That's crazy
Don't forget that Hayley Wickenheiser and Clara Hughes were excellent multi-sport athletes.
Clara is one of few Olympians ever to win a medal in both Winter and Summer Olympics, in Speed Skating and Cycling respectfully.
"You can't stop Bo Jackson"
The Cincinnati Bengals actually did.
@Cxh C yeah cause they were the last team he ever played against.
His doctor said just about anyone else in that incident would have strained his hip but no was so strong he ripped it out of the socket......and then popped it back in himself.
WatchMojo: Wrestling isn't a sport.......
The Rock: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK!!!!!!
I'm honestly surprised WatchMojo had the knowledge to put Jim Thorpe as #1. For all those people thinking Bo should have been #1, do your research on Thorpe then answer this question again. Thorpe was Bo before Bo's parents were even alive.
I don't know if you guys noticed or not, but you made a typo. You put "#2" next to Bo Jackson's name.
No it's not as I thought so when I saw ur comment after watching the video I remember all the crazy shit he did (while paving the way for Native Americans) so Bo comes in as basically 1a
He should be number 1 without a doubt
+Kid from Chicago Jim Thorpe is arguably the greatest athlete to ever live, so I think he has earned #1
lol he should of been #3
nebraska avenger Well Bo Jackson IS the greatest athlete to ever live. So he should be number 1.
Lev Yashin is the best football goalkeeper of all time was a perfect ice hockey goalkeeper. and Vsevolod Bobrov was USSR football champion. And Olympic games gold medalist in ice hockey. how can you forget about these outstanding people?
Good point

Minor league doesn't count they said, yet the count Michael Jordan
Didnt he play for the White sox
Matteo Vallejo I noticed that too
Alexander Technically not. He played for the Birmingham Barons..... an affiliate with the White Sox
I questioned it to an d went back to listen to qualifications again. They specifically said lower level minor leagues. Since the WS's put him in AAA straight away he was technically high tier minors.
No he played AA, not AAA. That's really pushing it in terms of their criteria.
Danny Ainge? Played for the Toronto Blue Jays when he was drafted by the Celtics. All American in 3 sports in college
Danny Ainge > Michael Jordan for this particular list
No just because mj is the goat in one sport and still played another
People sleep on Danny Ainge. He should be top 5 on this list easily.
I agree, mj wasn’t good enough for AA and anyone who watched the last dance knows he only played AA so they had enough seats to accommodate the fans
Blue Coyote LMAO the Mendoza Line. George Brett created the ultimate troll job on his teammate. I'm surprised he takes it so well.
Wilt Chamberlain?!! People forget he is in the volleyball hall of fame too
Joaquin Rojas Tineo finally I was searching for this comment smh we are so deep in the comments sections damn a two different hall of fames is unbelievable the most impressive part his entire volleyball career was as a retired nba player
Also Track and Field in college -broke a record or two
oops missed yoru post but I added his track and field feats as well.
Yes, and there are many other sports which he could have dominated, had he chosen to play them.
You left out track and field
watch mojo u have truly out done yourself, going through all that info and then presenting it all in one single video. You truly are one of..... no u are my most favourite UA-cam channel. thnx for everythin

Bo Jackson should be number 1
Yup cause Bo Knows #1
I have to disagree with you.
+Megamania 215 ok
Agreed Jackson was great
yea

Top 10 North American Athletes Who Played More Than One Sport
it's because American athletes are the best at sports
No shit what about Sir Ian Botham
what, is there a bunch of European players who excell at fucking soccer and cricket? lol

No Danny Ainge?
Deion also played a baseball game and football game in the same day. He is my favorite multi-sport athlete.
Anyone saying Jim Thorpe doesn't deserve the top spot should do some fucking research
agreed.
Absolutely! The greatest athlete of all time!
Ya Thorpe definitely has the most impressive resume. Dave Winfield is a guy who didn't even make the list who should be considered up there with Bo and Thorpe. He was a HOF Right Fielder, but he was actually drafted as a pitcher, being one of the best pitchers in his draft class. agreed on Winfield. A cousin of mine played with him at the U (Baseball) and echoes your words.
Hmmm, I see this guy named Vincent Jackson who played football and baseball, definitely the best of all time to play multiple sports.
Dave Winfield was a hell of an athlete.... In college he lettered in baseball ,basketball, and football... SIGNED with the San Diego Padres and had a Hall of Fame career...
Neymar is a great diving champion
Lol

Why include so many pro wrestlers in the voting list if you weren't going to allow them to qualify for the top 10?
Jackie robinson and bo jackson are probably the 2 best overall athletes ever. especially Jackie the guy could compete pretty damn good at everything
Mr Thorpe is definitely placed in the right spot. Thanks for that.
Bo Jackson better be first..
yup
That's what I am saying, dude is a rare BEAST of an athlete
You should know by now with WM, the entry that should be #1 is always #2.
I'd put him ahead of Jim Thorpe for sure.
Jim Thorpe
Great vid thx
Writing before I start, if Bo Jackson isn't 1st I quit
Wtf !!!! I quit!!!
Jackie Robinson will always be a fantastic athlete to break any color barrier
Yup, all Americans. Good rule about the fighters by the way
However, there are more than just MMA fighters and boxers, there's kickboxers, etc.
Ellyse Perry should be on this list since she's played at the highest level for both sports she represented Australia for in Football and Cricket but Watchmojo dont do enough research to know these things.
she won a Cricket World Cup in 2013 and played in the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2011 making it to the Quarter Finals
certainly more successful than some on this list for the multiple sports she's played
Deion should be one or two.
Why?
I never understand how a list on this topic can be made without mentioning Christa Luding-Rothenburger. she won Olympic medals in 1988 in the winter AND the summer games as an ice skater and cycler.
Shawn white too. won x games gold in summer and winter.

Also, some top level sprinters have had quite a successful career in bobsleigh as well.
Mj sucked in baseball. .202 with 3 bombs is below average at best
He played in the minors, and he practiced swinging a bat every day until his hands bled.
Still doesn't make him a good baseball player though
TBH his baseball career is far more impressive than most people realise. The guys he played with spent their whole lives playing baseball and even though wasn't good at first, he actually managed to get a lot better and was doing ok towards the end. That is impressive.
name one great minor league baseball player because I'm sure Mark couldn't name at least one
List isn't about how good he was
Good list. I would have added Bob Gibson (MLB pitcher Creighton basketball player, went on to play for the globetrotters) and Wilt Chamberlain (NBA Center, Track and Field star, Volleyball).

bo was inspiring! great memories watching him! I can't think of an athlete I'd rather take the lunch! So many good times watching him
But has anybody ever been considered one of the best at each sport? Not just good enough be compete?

Wilt Chamberlain - Volleyball and Basketball

Jim Thorpe
Nobody outside North America. Lev Yashin won the Ballon D'or in Soccer and was also a first Division Player in ice hockey.
Right. He should be mentioned.
Denis Compton, won the Ashes for England in 1953, won an FA Cup for Arsenal in 1950!
but he's not American and arsenal suvk
But he didn't play multiple sports dumbass
Cricket for England, Football for Arsenal. your google skills are lacking for 21st century.....dumbass
Jackie Robinson and Michael Jordan are two legends in their own right

Sonny Bill Williams! Rugby Union, Rugby League, MMA, Boxing
How the fuck does a heisman winner NOT get drafted?😐
Bucs drafted Bo but he didn't go with them because they sneakily disqualified him from finishing his baseball season in college.
He was talking about ward
Because most Heisman winning QB's were flops at the NFL level.
Warren Nelson

Well sure but athletes today have access to a lot of things people at that time didn't. Especially the pharmaceuticals if you catch my drift. ;)
not every great athlete does roids, there is such a thing as hard work ;)
in all likelihood, Jim Thorpe would have been built physically of the time just as Bo Jackson or any other athlete does.
Simple response: Wrong
Will this channel ever have 1080p videos ?
good job
Hershel Walker was so fucking dope. All these athletes are inspirations.
What about sonny bill Williams? Played rugby union, rugby league, boxing and mma
I guess we're glazing over the fact that Herschel was also a world class track star who raced against Carl Lewis and others at the '83 Indoor National Championship.
As a European I must say:
Baseball, Basketball and American Football must be very easy since most "athletes" on this list did this sports...

Damn that control on the ball
That intro of BASEketball was epic

Élysées perry plays international cricket and football (soccer) for her country
i thought there would be Sonny Bill Williams
I think Clara Hughes should be on the list. She is the only athlete male or female to ever win multiple medals at both the summer and winter olympics. And she did it between 1996-2010, so it was in modern times which makes it even more impressive.
What about John Surtees? He was the only man to win world championships on 2 wheels and 4
Deion Luwynn Sanders Sr., The Greatest Multi-Sport Athlete In North American Pro Sports History.

I love the Tom Brady mention, but if you include him you have to include Frank Thomas, John Elway, Danny Ainge, and Dave Winfield.
Wow, what a fail not having Dave Winfield on the list, not even an honorable mention!!! Drafted by 4 different pro leagues (3 sports).

The video states that athletes with "small minor league success" won't make the list but Michael Jordan was number 10??
