I had one college math course where I earned a 98% overall grade, 100% on the final. Next semester I enter the next math class and was so confused. I had an idea of what was happening but not enough to do well. I finally started coming up with the correct answers but through a different method. We were given a pop quiz on the second day of class and had to show our work. I failed even though the answers were correct. I failed for not using the same method to get to the answer. I was pissed. Then the professor tells the entire class that 80% of us failed, we're all stupid and going nowhere in life. I packed up and went straight to student services. Sadly, I now realize that's when I stopped attending classes. I should have been stronger and not let one lousy professor kill my joy and motivation.
I love how focused they were on trying to figure it all out, that even when April fool was spelled out, they didn't notice it. Kudos to that teacher for creating such a good learning environment 😊
This is literally how math felt like in high school haha. But I really love the fact that your students weren't scared to ask a million questions and also express they don't "get it." I feel like when I was in high school, a lot of people would just say nothing and try to figure it out after class or suffer in silence rather than admit they don't understand in the middle of a class of their peers. My Calculus professor was being cute one day and put a really complicated theorem on the board. The entire class was panicking trying to figure it out. Almost immediately I raised my hand. (I'm a class clown with a love of books.) Prof calls on me and every head turned to me. I said, with full confidence, "42!" He said "why is it 42?" I said "because 42 is the ultimate answer." I get 10 bonus points on the weekly exam for that and I discovered my Prof likes reading the same books I do. No one else in the class ever got the joke.

This is actually a really good exercise for the students, trying to discern sense from nonsense. They are actively engaging their powers of reasoning.

I thought it was especially funny how he lied about making up the whole thing. This concept is called Reimann's Sum. He got a couple minor things wrong though like the equation for rise over run. I was an A/B Engineering student at UT Austin and aced AP Calculus in high school. He just didn't wanna unnecessarily scare/scar them with just how deep the rabbit whole can go I bet XD

He got a couple minor details wrong like the equation for rise over run, but the overall concept of "sum" or sigma in math is still the same. It's used to find the area within a graph curve or can be altered to find the volume of an oddly shaped object. It can be applied in fields such as statistics or probability for protecting the future outlook of a certain industry or product, in architecture, civil and mechanical engineering, rocket science, and the like... I almost had a panic attack from ptsd flashbacks when he wrote the letter "i". Just Google what are i's in math, I dare you.
Hint: i's in math are used to express/justify the 5th dimension in quantum physics and string theory.
