- How to Add and Subtract Rational Expressions - Simplifying Step by Step
In this video, I explain how to add and subtract rational expressions by finding a common denominator and combining terms. I walk through multiple examples to show how to handle different cases, such as simple denominators, polynomials, and factoring.
What You Will Learn:
How to find a common denominator for rational expressions.
Step-by-step examples for adding and subtracting rational expressions
Techniques for simplifying rational expressions after combining them.
How to handle more complex cases involving polynomials.
Tips for factoring polynomials to find the least common denominator (LCD).
By the end of this video, you'll have an understanding of how to work with rational expressions and simplify them efficiently. This is perfect for algebra students or anyone looking to brush up on their skills in adding and subtracting rational expressions.

Always my backup plan when I dont understand what my teacher is talking about
alright
TempestZero i dont understand this guy
same
It’s been 8 years where are you in life!
WHO IS WATCHING BECAUSE THEY HAVE A TEST ON MONDAY
MEEEEEEEEEE I WANNA DIE
I hate mondays...
Meh
I hate math
Me ikr math so hard
Why the hell can i learn this in 7 minutes in like 2 equations but my teacher cant do it in like 45 minutes to 2 days. ////\\\\\
Isaiah Miller because you have a class consisted of more people than you and and your learning
Beyond You Whaaaa????
Isaiah Miller ikr
Beyond you yeaah true, but still....
You make it so easy to understand, truly a gifted math teacher. Thank you!
Why cant my professor be as relaxed as you are?
Seriously...he PURPOSELY makes these types of things confusing, even though you've shown me that they aren't.
Thanks so much.
I no longer need to go to class... Oh, wait. Participation points... gah! Thanks so much! This is way easier to understand then both my TA and Professor! They need to take some pointers from you!
? Why is that terrible? I'm not good at math.
y'all... there are more advanced classes in college that teach the same things as lower grades
I’m a sophomore learning this
Most UA-camr Math tutors ive seen are left handed, and i have to say you are the best one ive seen. Thanks a lot.
you helped me with my online math class soooo much. Thanks!!! You still rock dude
ha! dont get mad! math is haaaaaaaaard! especially the stuff that you feel like should not be! i always got stuck on everything, so do got give up hope.
work on it for a while, get frustrated, try again, get more frustrated, put it away, and come back to it later. that is the recipe for success in math.
8 minutes of a youtube video + soothing voice > 90 minutes in class + monotone voice.
And I learned more. Thank you youtube.
thanks! i appreciate it!!
good luck on the exam tomorrow!!!!
happy to help!
Thanks alot for the video! I'm in nursing school and have to pass my math class, with your help it makes it alot easier to reach my goals!
Your videos are honestly so helpful and easy to understand. Like you have done a WAY better job at teaching me through your videos than my actual teacher does everyday. So thank you for that.
yep, that is what you would do. same exact idea, only the algebra would get more messy
You make my life easier. I consider you as my savior, i have a report tomorrow and i don't understand about this lesson, but in this video; i learned how to do it. Thnaks man
this helped, a lot
ps:
i still hate math 🙃
Man my teacher makes/explains everything so complicated.I dont know what hes talking about the whole time. But this guy, my cyber teacher, helped me alot more than my actual teacher lol
thanks for showing the step-by-step process on solving it...You made it easier for us to understand...
totally dig your style... you remind me of the glam rockers of the late 70s (the cool ones that is) - you should come to austin, you would totally fit in
Thank you sir! You are help not only to us people at 11 p.m. trying to do homework & don't understand it, but to the people who don't have access to education and come here to learn, you are awesome!!!
you have beautiful handwriting O_O
Thank you so much! My teacher is absolutely dreadful and you've taught me more in one video than he has this entire year. You made a great video, thank you, again.
I LOVE YOU. my math teacher is horrible at explaining things. out of a chapter of 6 lessons, he taught us 3 in one day, 2 in the other, and didnt bother to teach one at all. Rushed through everything. He then left to travel with the varsity basketball team. horrible stuff lol. if it werent for you, i dont know what i would do
Again, I cannot express my gratitude! I've bought a pre-cal book that is impossible to decipher! So, I've just been reading the topics in the book, then going to your videos, then doing the exercises in the book. As far as the explanations are concerned, I only go to you! THANK YOU!
nice to know i am still rockin'! : )
glad i could help
If you know the "Box method", You can do it backwards OR the FOIL method. (x+2)+(x+3)
FOIL it. x(x)=x[squared]. x(3)= 3x. 2(x)= 2x. 2(3) = 6. Now, add like terms. x[squared]+(3x+2x)+6.
FOIL stands for First Outer Inner Last. In this case, x and x are First, x and 3 are outer, 2 and x are Inner, and 2 and 3 are Last.
Hope it helps
yep, same process. i should have some examples somewhere dealing with that...
i have seen this stuff in high school myself and a million times when tutoring other students. many students jump right into calculus in college, so of course those students have seen this stuff in high school
That was really helpful. I missed a bunch of days in math class and this just summed up what my teacher had taught us for an hour and a half.
thanks for the vid but i still hate math
Same
Marh is not for you, I respect that
same
Can you count money yes
Oh no u are terrible at math its easy
patrick your videos help me a lot for my periodic test this monday! keep making educational vids! much love and respect man!
omg! you've helped me more then my teacher has this whole semester. I have last chapter test tomorrow and finals on Wednesday... I am also going to watch all your videos.. on rationals.
thank you for making this, my math teacher doesn't know how to teach and you just saved me from failing a test tomorrow
Man I appreciate your video it saved me from spending a lot of time from reading over notes and getting confused. I liked and subscribed, thank you for the incredibly helpful video!
This was really helpful! My math teacher just barely explains anything to us and kind of throws us in the dust so this was really a great help. Thank you so much! I will definitely be watching more! :)
but i appreciate that you take the time to let me know i am helping!
@Itsmyfaceonthescreen do you mean (6x+8) / ( 2x + 2y) ? if so, the answer is no. you can factor a 2 out of the numerator and denominator and cancel those however.
After not doing maths for about 3 years, this was easy to learn again. Thanks!!!
The best part of this online teaching video is that u can pause and
replay what you didnt get without classmates judging you :-)
This helped sooooo much! I wish you were my teacher 😭
I don't get it... I used to love math but now... with my new math teacher... well .. i don't know.. she's really quite fast.. and using some difficult methods.. and I don't like the way she teach.. so I research about our topic and find out how to solve it then I found this.. I don't know but I still don't get it.. I was the best math student when I was in 7th grade but how come now??
ARMY spotted xD Hiiii xD Goodluck ^w^)/
+sachi Potato haha thanks! 😂

it was a brilliant leap!
Thanks man have big test tomorrow and i didn't understand a thing until i watched your video going to tell all my friends about you
you are my hero man... thanks for helping me, i punched 4 holes in the wall and shattered 2 glass bottles while frustrated at not understanding this... usually im a 96% average student and it made me extremely mad when i didnt understand this..
Thank you very MUCH for the help, Patrick.
Saved me from failing my math test.
@Mcciiee monetary gifts are always accepted! : ) you can donate on my old website justmathtutoring... there is a link on my channel page. thanks a bunch!
thanks! my mathematician/artist wife is always trying to get me to draw. she likes my simple stuff! but, i get nervous when she watches and i usually scribble everything out! : ) so, i never develop past stick figures : )
she really likes my leonardo (from the teenage mutant ninja turtles) that i drew from one of the very old comics. but i was about 8 years old then, so i think she is just being nice!
you really saved me! i was just learning this math lesson and i couldnt understand how to make it the same common denominator, well, my teacher does it in a different and confusing way, but yours is more understanding! you really saved me thanks!!!!!! :D
My teacher is awful and you just saved my life. Thanks so much,
I really appreciate that you've taken the time to make these videos. They're incredibly helpful. Thank you! :D
One of the hardest topics in math :(
!!!
Brendan Graber it's good to be versatile in every subject, that way you won't have trouble when you are asked to do what ever subject may be needed.
pano ba mag search
lol
i agree
@RhiannaCzennelle what is a rational equation?
Thanks so much your video was simply and very straight forward! I totally forgotten how to the rational expressions, I really appreciate it! I will definitely be checking out more of your videos soon!!! Thanks!
man, you explain this so much better than my teacher. She goes way too fast, writes too small etc...
Amazing. Supremely helpful. I looked at this right before a test and hopefully I'll do well now.
Bless your soul, for putting these tutorials up. I know where I'm going when I need help with college algebra. Holla. Peace and blessings
i would think that having it factored is often better than having it multiplied out
Thank you playa :) I learn way better from you than my Alg 2 teacher that I have an A in.
Missed this lesson in class yesterday. Thanks a lot for the help.
that might be stretching it : )
It was really helpful. Thank you for taking the time to provide this explanation
Thanks so much! You helped me with my periodical exams for tomorrow.
Thanks for the wonderful explanation of rational equations addition and subtraction!
I swear I understand an 8 min video on the whole lesson than the 3 days it takes in class. why cant u be my teacher!!! :'@
You are the best man, you just won a new subscriber, god bless you!
@crazyjloop89 you can not post url's as comments as youtube blocks them. there is a link to my website on my channel page.
THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!!!! YOUR TUTORIALS ARE SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND!!
this guy would be the best teacher ever if i had him!
I learned more from this video in 8min then I did from my teacher in one week.
it's like late in the evening and i have to study for a test tomorrow aND I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND BUT YOU AWESOME BRO I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN
Thank you. Very easy to understand the way you explained.
Truly a life saver, thanks man!
Really awesome video!!!! Helped me to finally understand how to substract or add rational expressions :D
thanx dude really needed help i'm taking an online class so no teacher and my teacher in school never explained anything.
i feel sad for the other videos about math. your the top dog!
@patrickJMT True, true. But when I was in 8th grade, my math teacher said that most of the stuff we would be doing is only important if you plan to be a math teacher, and despite extensive searches, I've yet to find relevant uses for most of the upper math concepts.
Thank you Patrick, that was really helpful!!! Gettin ready for finals!
4:19 the "answer" seems much more complex than the original "problem"
good luck!
Great vid, was absent the day they taught this at school. really helped me. And i know this isnt something im supposed to be focusing on, but your lines are straight even when youlift ur hand off the table. thats impressive. consider architecture... cuz you have a stable hand and that comes from art and creativity. plus you obviously knowu r math so :P
.
This makes much more sense to me now. Thank you! Great math teacher.
thanks!you helped me a lot!!!!now im ready for my test tom!!!!!
I'm watching this because I failed my test which involved this, and I have another test involving this tomorrow and I couldn't understand it from anywhere else ahaha
Thanks bro. I understand it more than my teacher's explanation. Lavyah
