I bought new 1995 Sportsman Ural. It has a differential full time 2 wheel drive, if the sidecar wheel spins you don't go. I put a 1974 BMW R60 engine with 1974 R90 top end for more torque and speed, I had no problem keeping up with my Harley riders, flying the chair on right hand and sliding through left hand. I put enough miles on to cause the Sportsman final drive to need rebuilt, unfortunately Ural stopped making the Sportsman final drive, since my Ural was my only transportation, the Ural dealer had a patrol final drive on the shelf, so I put a patrol rear drive on welded necessary items to place the engagement items for 2 wheel drive lock now it handles same as yours. top speed is near 100 mph. still only 30 mpg.
Hi Don. I had read about the full time system. Really seems like that would be the ideal setup with the option to lock the rear diff when needed. 160 km/hr on a Ural must be interesting. My Gear Up has seen 120 km/hr once on a big downhill and it was feeling pretty sketchy. No problems running more power through the transmission?
@@AwesomePlayers The gears in 1995 were heat treated by color, 3 shifts, if one was on the red side - soft, if on the yellow side of orange hard and brittle, in the mid orange just right. Apparently he took it to the dealer and all they did was tighten the plug more and the leak went away. We tightened it pretty good and used a new plug so I'm guessing there was a flaw in the seat of the plug or something. I wouldn't want to use too much force on those aluminium threads.
I saw other clips for the ural and they pretty much cross some deep rivers, now I'm wondering what changes they did to it to be able to go so deep in the water. I wanted to get one but I'm not too sure now. Thanks for your clip, was awesome to watch
Apparently they run the air intake into the sidecar. Ural is not an ATV. In stock form the very low mufflers limit it off-road. Great for gravel and bombing around but it has its limitations. I still love mine. Haven't really had the need to do much deep water in it.

I really have enjoyed the Ural's slower pace. I bought it as a bit of a lark since the delivery of my 800 was delayed by a year. I figured I would ride it for one summer and sell it. That was 10 years ago!

you need to replace the high-voltage wires with rubber ones like on a car so that the candle is blocked, at least for an off-road, and bring the air intake higher.
Years ago the service manager at the BMW dealer in Raleigh, North Carolina, told me of having a bike in after a certain off-road incident. The rider had setup for a turn in the mountains but read it wrong, ending up going off the turn, down an embankment, and into a pond. The service manager goes into shop to check of water got into the final drive then comes back out and summons the owner by saying, "who's the U-Boat driver?!"
@@AwesomePlayers HA! I had no idea - looking up the release date for that movie I was far too young and my parents too fundie Christian at the time. I assume a vehicle ends up in the drink in the movie?
Watching the video... "hmm... sounds like maybe Canadian guys?"... next shot shows Tim Hortons... We really enjoy getting up to the Algonquin area once a year or two - fun riding and gives us the chance to have some proper poutine. Glad both Urals survived the swim, must be the Russians know how to seal up the bits that can't get wet - there are videos of them crossing water that required snorkel kits that bring the intake up the back of the rider (whole bike under water).
The problem here is the damn salt. You might get one ride before they cover the place in the stuff. Got a little on the bike once and the Russian locktite started right away.
High exhaust options were way too much money when I looked. I have thought about a skidplate but I don't really use the Ural off-road. Mainly to go to Costco...
Hahhahaha.. I guess I would be worried too if I had flooded my engine.. in a brand new bike heheh!! Awesome adventure and congrats to the noobs! Great video mate! \m/
It you want a Honda experience then certainly don't buy a Ural. Most folks I know are happy with theirs. Mine is over ten years old and has only 10,000 kms but so far I have changed one relay for the flashers.
Don't know how I missed this one but love it! Good fun and adventure as usual. Looks like super Dave works at RR on Cote de liesse? My Dad worked there for 35 years many moons ago (retired in 1984). Please say Cheers from Frank!
I'm 23 and love the idea of owning a Ural, but currently I've calculated that I might have to save the money I'm left every month for almost ten years If I want the 2020 ranger 😬
It is just a short piece of old rail bed. Only a few KMs. If you are coming to ride off-road check out the TCAT. www.graveltravel.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2:trans-canad-adventure-trail&catid=1
The Ural kit is great. Even the kit in my 2000 1150GS was decent. Could remove the wheels and do basic maintenance. On my F800 it was non existent, my Husky 701 also had a totally crap kit.
I Just Bought my First 2008 Ural and found it pulls hard to the right when adding power and pulls to the left when backing off power, is this normal?? I would never think about driving it without both hands on the handlebars , it's a fight to keep it going straight using both hands . is this Normal?? this bike with the sidecar is workout driving it are they all this way??
Check your tyre pressures, check you lean out of the bike and toe in of the sidecar. There are videos on how to do this but check your tyre pressures first. The bike will naturally accelerate around the chair and the chair will naturally brake around the bike.
I found your video because I was considering adding a 2006 Ural tourist to my Triumph America and Moto Guzzi California, but I am having second thoughts about that now. Great video and commentary, though, and a very enjoyable watch.
@@AwesomePlayers Actually I have considered several Urals over the last several years, but most were too far away for a casual visit. The Tourist I saw recently on FB Marketplace is also a day's drive away, but near a good friend I need to go visit anyhow. However the $5,600 asking price is more than I paid for my two other bikes combined, and while I definitely like quirky (hence the Moto Guzzi) there is a limit to my willingness to have quirky at any price. I also think the Tourist lacks a bit of the charm of the more military looking Ural models without much advantage, if any, in amenities. A Ural is still on my mind, though, and if one comes along closer to the NADA valuation I'll probably bite (or be bitten). BTW, when I clicked reply to the email notice of your reply, the video came up in some sort of restricted mode with all comments hidden so I had to go look for another of your videos to get back to the comment section. I'll be watching more of them tomorrow.
In the UK back in the 80s the importer would put a refurbed BMW R 80 engine in them for a surprisingly low fee. The base bike was very cheap, suggestion was that the Russian needed the foreign currency .
Out of curiosity what is the lake called? I found the bar you were at on google maps but there are so many tiny lakes in that area, lol. A Black Lake search keeps taking me to a Black Lake in Saskatchewan so that's not what i'm lookin for. EDIT: lol, found it minutes after posting the question. Coords are 45.720042, -74.579057 if anyone else is interested.
Belle ride! Je pense aller voir un Ural qui est a vendre dans les environs. J’aime l’idée d’un model de moto vintage à souhait. Possédez-vous toujours un URAL? Cheers
All I’ve had to replace is a flasher relay which happened the very first week of ownership. As far as tires go, I can source them locally here in Canada with no issue. When I bought the bike, I ordered a bag of 25 oil filters so I’m pretty much set for life as far as that goes. Spark plugs are a standard part. The carburetters are a standard part so jets and needles are easily available.so I guess I’m saying so far no issue with parts
I’ve wanted one for awhile. Seems akin to off-roading my old Subaru. No gears, so give’r! Wonder how they do in the winter? We only get about two feet of very dry, powdery snow each winter. There’s a red sidecar rig here in town, but can’t get close enough to ID it as a Ural.
Can't really play in the snow here much because of the salt. The few time I have had it in the sno it has been fun and the limit has been ground clearance. Not much room under the pipes.
Damn I thought you might emulate the Russians by floating the Ural across the stream.Maybe you need to install some flotation devices like in Canoes LOL :D
Considering all that it comes with, I thought you would get those breather tubes they used to cross that river. Seems weird to say "We made our bikes cross a super deep river!" Yet not provide the tube for such a thing.
Sadly no breather tubes for the air intake. You would also need to run a hose from the final drive breather as it would fill with water and destroy the rear gears.
It is my very dream to own something like a Ural or a BMW RH75 (I'm german after all ;)). Is such motorcycle a good option for MC rookies; and is it a good choice over all since it doesnt really feel like a real real motorcycle with all the bike leaning in the curves etc. Thanks for the advice George
HI George. Honestly I'm not sure. Probably easier if you have a lot of moto experience in that at least you have the basics mastered. The controls are like a motorcycle but it is very different machine. The Ural handling at very low speeds is pretty benign. At real speeds on a twisty road it can be quite bizarre. Once the side car lifts it becomes a motorcycle again! Most people ask what the cruising speed of the Ural is and then right away I know it is not for them. The Ural is slow. You have to be OK with that. It is for those who don't mind getting passed by people. On the other hand on a gravel road once you have some experience it can keep up a quite spirited pace that surprises people. Hope that was helpful?
Hayo, you gave me a little idea. I think you made clear that it is a very special vehicle only suitable for real lovers. I'm interested in "old" Russian and German (especially East German) old machines (like the W50, BMW R75, Ural (Truck and mc)) and I really dont care so much for the speed but for the vehicle itself. The old-oldfashioned style of the vehicle and way of ridin is just a thing I think I'd really love. Also it's a very unusual vehicle. I'll check the price for sucha thing and wait for some time to think about it but I'm really about to just get an Ural and some of me old East German Paramilitia (me Grandfathers friend was in the "Kampfgruppen") stuff and make a real military unicate out of it (and me ;)). It is like a big dream, so I'll think carefully but for now, I'm positive. I have one question left tho. I know the Ural is not really made for it but CAN you take the sidecar off and actually ride it solo, like you can do woth some other SidecarMCs? I'm just curious and that option would be extremely great and make the decision easier (tho I think it's not possible). Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate that. George
Stu Pollock Hey Stu. For GPS I really like the Montana series. Most of us use those now. For GoPro anything 3 or higher has decent image but the 7 and up have amazing service stabilization and a better picture.

Those guys crossing the crazy rivers in Russia had much bigger balls than me.
Thanks for a great video from an ex dneper owner. try snow next time it's good
The problem here is the damn salt. You might get one ride before they cover the place in the stuff. Got a little on the bike once and the Russian locktite started right away.
Have you ever thought about skid plates and higher exhaust?
High exhaust options were way too much money when I looked. I have thought about a skidplate but I don't really use the Ural off-road. Mainly to go to Costco...
@@AwesomePlayers Yeah I think they are $1,600.
@@scubatrucker6806 That is in US$ imagine in Canadian pesos.
@@AwesomePlayers Yeah it would be over $2000 Loonies. 🤣🤣
New guy is a good sport too keep maken vids guys
Will do.
Hahhahaha.. I guess I would be worried too if I had flooded my engine.. in a brand new bike heheh!!
Awesome adventure and congrats to the noobs!
Great video mate! \m/
Thanks bud.
They used to have a differential on the 2 wheels drive. Then you could use 2 wheel drive on the street.
The Dnepr models did have a differential and could be left in 2 wheel.
How have your Urals done? I hear nothing but bad things about them yet I still want one!
I passed the message on. Cheers.
Funny story, and nice to ear some french too...
Merci mon ami!
I'm 23 and love the idea of owning a Ural, but currently I've calculated that I might have to save the money I'm left every month for almost ten years If I want the 2020 ranger 😬
Go out and buy used. Lots of garage queens out there. The new 2020 won't be 4 times the fun.
yes, it is a old railway track dating to the first world war, you can find the map on the web, and from there take google map and see it!
Cool.
Philippe Gagnon where are you talking about? Doing an off road trip to canada.
It is just a short piece of old rail bed. Only a few KMs. If you are coming to ride off-road check out the TCAT. www.graveltravel.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2:trans-canad-adventure-trail&catid=1
Vous êtes au Québec...? Où je vous trouvais pas mal brave d'aller dans l'eau avec ça....
Pas loins de Montreal. Pas tellement courageux que stupide....
My 94' bmw K75 comes with pretty much the same tool kit, you could build an entire bike on the side of the road lol
The Ural kit is great. Even the kit in my 2000 1150GS was decent. Could remove the wheels and do basic maintenance. On my F800 it was non existent, my Husky 701 also had a totally crap kit.
"Das boot" lol.
Bout fell out of my chair.

This is the Ural way. After a day of riding my shoulders hurt.
Don’t let this experience scare you. I still have my Ural and still love it. They are quirky but a lot of fun.
Phil Warner Strange about the video. I will check it out.
Ive wanted a ural for many yrs but watching this convinced me not to get one.thus is really disappointed that some hub deep water kills them.
don't let my experience sour you on these machines. Plenty of other folks have had epic adventures on Urals.
Wake Up America I submerged the engine on mine and never had a problem you just got to keep the gas on and keep your momentum up
Robert Esposito Haha ! Not if the air intake is underwater ! 😂
Folks go deeper than this, but they snorkel the engines
I can remember when New Urals were $3900 brand new.

Always been fascinated by these bikes, would love to have one, quirky, like an old VW?
They are a lot of fun. Easy to work on and a create way to meet people.
Has anyone tried to put a BMW or a Japanese drive in one of these using the Ural two wheel drive?
It has been done but if you up the power you will just start braeking other parts. The final drive isnt up to handling 80hp.
In the UK back in the 80s the importer would put a refurbed BMW R 80 engine in them for a surprisingly low fee. The base bike was very cheap, suggestion was that the Russian needed the foreign currency .
Great Video Thumps up :-)
what kind of driving license is required to drive a Ural with sidecar in Quebec?
Standard motorcycle license. The laws just changed so now someone with a learners permit no longer needs an escort. Much better better idea.
This was nice
What is like to ride a ural sidecar?
"It's like racing with a boat"😂
I like it!
LOL I bet he was surprised as well ;-) cheers
I'm defiantly making a point to get out there this year with the drz
I would love to get up on the VMUT one day as well.

Cheers
How neat would it be all wheel drive ?
Would be fun but the Ural barely has enough power to drive two wheels!
@@AwesomePlayers needs a turbo upgrade.
@@Mr1971tommyboy Was thinking nitrous but a Turbo or two would get it done!
@@AwesomePlayers with turbo then you can also put intake tubes up much higher so no more water in the engine also ?
If this engine is a reversal engineered of the bms.
It would also stand to reason a K1 engine swap would not be out of the question either ?
It’s currently 23 Aug 2024, have you had any problem with parts for the ural?
All I’ve had to replace is a flasher relay which happened the very first week of ownership. As far as tires go, I can source them locally here in Canada with no issue. When I bought the bike, I ordered a bag of 25 oil filters so I’m pretty much set for life as far as that goes. Spark plugs are a standard part. The carburetters are a standard part so jets and needles are easily available.so I guess I’m saying so far no issue with parts
Bravo 👍😁
Thanks bud.
@@AwesomePlayers 😁🖐️
I've seen these bikes almost float while making a water crossing.... Why were these bikes having such a hard time ??
Air intake was raised. I believe it was routed into the sidecar somehow.
In Eastern Europe the going price for a LADA is 1 ton of potatoes OR
13 URINALS 😂🤣😂
I’ve wanted one for awhile. Seems akin to off-roading my old Subaru. No gears, so give’r! Wonder how they do in the winter? We only get about two feet of very dry, powdery snow each winter. There’s a red sidecar rig here in town, but can’t get close enough to ID it as a Ural.
Can't really play in the snow here much because of the salt. The few time I have had it in the sno it has been fun and the limit has been ground clearance. Not much room under the pipes.
Nice Video. 👍
Damn I thought you might emulate the Russians by floating the Ural across the stream.Maybe you need to install some flotation devices like in Canoes LOL :D
I saw that crazy video.
ROCK ON Dave is awsome
How come some urals die in the water while others seem amphibious?
When you see them crossing super deep water, they usually have a snorkel kit or a hose that actually goes into the sidecar
Hayo,
you gave me a little idea.
George

you think the BMW f800 gs think it can hold a ural attch to the bike .
Maybe....
I’m soon getting a gear up and what would you recommend for gps system and go pro. Love your vids
Stu Pollock Hey Stu. For GPS I really like the Montana series. Most of us use those now. For GoPro anything 3 or higher has decent image but the 7 and up have amazing service stabilization and a better picture.
Running the sidecar tire at 5psi below max will help keep the sidecar from lifting up on you.
