I love when Mr. Connoisseur comes on! I think what I found most insightful is to when he said “want nothing”. How this resonates with me! I am one of those moms that desperately wants their me time back; it is a MASSIVE source of stress for me. I need to remind myself it’s not about me anymore and my wants. I should want nothing, but find pleasure in the little things that life affords me; my children’s laughter, hugs, afternoon tea, supper with family, A warm bath at night. I don’t think it’s about you not being important anymore and your needs not being important. It’s just that not having me time and being stressed about it is far more stressful than just accepting that you aren’t going to get any xx
Choose to find your ME time in the daily grind. Like, waking up an extra 30 minutes before your littles to enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea and sit in quietness. Menu plan and meal prep so meals go smoothly. 😍
I can recall two pivotal points in my life where I learned through experience about re-framing my mind when dealing with stress. I used to complain a lot about my appearance, in particular my legs. One day when I was complaining out loud, a man passed me in a wheelchair. It was a very humbling moment. Now when I “wish they looked different” I remind myself to be grateful for their function instead of form. (I do know deep inside that outer beauty is not what is most important!) My other experience was stress after my divorce and being a single mom, working through co-parenting, custody, finances, and other worries. Through my work we volunteered at a shelter for women and children that were homeless and came from situations of abuse. I was reminded how fortunate I was to be educated, living in a safe area, financially able to support myself, and while my relationship with my ex wasn’t good, I didn’t fear for my life. Both of these situations put my life into perspective and ultimately helped me to forgive myself and others.
Ben is so wise! Yes please bring him back. I am a retired woman, grown children that have already been educated, grandmother to 2 boys. I can honestly say these are the best years!!! No stress at all. I feel so blessed. It seems the younger years are about getting things and the older years are about letting go of things. Best advice is don't sweat the small stuff and take the time to enjoy the moments in your life. They are fleeting. Great video!
I am committed to reading Proverbs this summer. Reading these you need to think about each verse and the meaning will result in wisdom in ones life. Wisdom leads to less stress. Taking the time to be quiet, read, think, learn and apply can lead to a less stressful life. Taking time out to be quiet is good, thinking is hard work but the only way one will really learn and the application of wisdom to ones life is beneficial. It does not need to be long but a short time every day is helpful.
As a retired teacher and grandmother, I can attest to the fact that life gets less stressful as you get older. Especially for young mothers, I like the advice that you can have it all,just not necessarily all at the same time. Also the days are long but the years are short,in regards to raising our families. Take the time to savour the smallest moments with your children,they are life’s greatest gift. Love your blog and channel,Jennifer. Ben, every one of your suggestions are fantastic! I read an interview w Michael J. Fox years ago. The interviewer asked him why he and his wife chose to have a 4th child later on, knowing that his Parkinson's Disease would get worse and worse. He answered (not an exact quote), "if I worry about how this disease will look for me in the future, I'm putting myself through it twice." This resonated with me so much. At the time I was a SAHM raising 3 kids VERY close in age, we were struggling financially, 2 grandparents terminally ill, husband working full-time + a side business. In hindsight, so much of the stress I experienced was around either issues from the past, unrealistic expectations I put on myself, not taking care of myself in ways that cost little time or money, and fear of all the future unknowns. I've definitely learned to focus on what I can realistically do, and leave the rest in God's hands, where it belongs. Great video, you two!

Ben's advice to "slow down" is something my husband does and says. When things get crazy, slow down, think things through, be intentional. You both gave excellent advice and I enjoyed this video with the two of you. The two of you compliment each other so well. Your faith shines through!
Great points. It is also important to not stress over our blessing. Many times we find ourselves stressing over kids that we tried to have for years, or a job that we went to school and worked hard to achieve. I agree with Ben; changing our respective with the cause of stress.
Love Ben's kind thoughtfulness. Age can bring many positives but also stresses, such as loss of income, competing in the workforce with younger colleagues, illness, dimentia, disability, loss of friends for various reasons, children moving far away, having to leave one's family home as it becomes too much to care for, etc. So keep honing your stress reduction tips well into the future!

Yeah Ben! Yes, I am becoming more and more aware that the things I stress about are wants and desires. When I really think about it, I don't even really want those things.

I don't like it when religion comes through - people are so many different religions and also some don't believe, and it is a real turn off for me to feel that coming through. "Christian" values are most often humanistic values whether you are agnostic, atheist, Jewish, Muslim, etc.

Great video. Loved hearing Ben’s words of wisdom. Here is something that has helped me throughout the years - “ No expectations”. So, no expectations for a vacation, for a night out, etc. and that way, anything good that happens (a sunny day, a good meal, a good nights sleep, etc) is so noticeable and brings a lot of joy.

Ben you have a wise and down to earth presence and you both complement each other so well. I particularly like the comment of ‘wanting nothing’. I study mindfulness and psychology both academically and personally and a lot of Ben’s suggestion are very valid! Ultimately our thoughts about any situation and not the situation itself, is the cause of most, if not all stress.
So many Biblical principals here: A merry heart (laughter) does good like a medicine, Proverbs 17:22...giving in secret, and letting the Father reward you, Matthew 6:4....don't worry about tomorrow, it will bring it's own trouble, Matthew 6:34. Lovely video, great ideas, not to mention how cute you both are! I just wanted to say that having twin babies was very stressful, but they grow and learn, which is exciting and rewarding. A very stressful aspect for many of us who are retired is that of caring for our aging parents. It’s so difficult to watch our beloved parents lose faculties, mobility, and independence. I couldn’t do it without prayer. 🙏🏻
Love hearing Ben's thoughts. He has a lot of common sense, which no one seems to have anymore. "Stop wanting" is a big problem, in my opinion also, as no one seems happy with what they have anymore. This was recommended to me just today and I found it interesting that it is still so apt in COVID times. This has been an unusually difficult time but your tips are so basic and timeless. As with so much of what you discuss on your channel, there is value in revisiting what has helped people for centuries. At least that is true for me. I find the stress percentage low as well. Money has always been a lot of my stress. I love all of these tips as well as urs. I think the key is determining which type of stress ur under and take the appropriate action.

Being retired should mean relaxation, but like many of my friends, our parents are elderly and require our care. Not all become sweet old people, especially when confused with Alzheimer's.
What an excellent and insightful conversation! My friends and I often talk about how we still have stress in our lives and we are all retired. We thought things would be different somehow, but the stressors have just morphed into other issues. I think it is part of the human condition, so it's important to develop healthy ways to combat stress. I'm so thankful Jesus is Lord of my life. His grace and peace are worth more to me than any worldly possession.

The last idea about not wanting put me in mind of a discovery I made when my children were young. They seemed to spend the entire month of December saying, "I know what you can get me for Christmas..." (as though they were giving me a golden opportunity.) I began making a point of completing my Christmas shopping before the end of November. When they would mention what they wanted, I would tell them that I had already finished my shopping. That seemed to cause a shift in the atmosphere of our home in December, and we focused more on the reason for the season. Thanks for another great video!
I’m 45 and I feel that the older I get the less stressed. If I do feel nervous or stressed I just change my thinking. And I agree with what you said about just slowing down everything your doing, sometimes when I feel anxious I do that and it makes such a difference. Also loved having your husband on, you two are great together. I hope he comes on again I really enjoyed this video!
Thanks for the advice! My Ben and I definitely get stressed about the little things. It really is a lack of trusting in God to be good in all the details of the day. As Ben said, it's always good to get back to the root of the issue.

I agree that it works wonderfully doing external things to deal with stress like baths, massages, exercise because for me, stress results in a brain loop that I have to break in order to let go of stress. I always tell my husband “I need to get out of my head and into my body”. Focusing on the physical sensation of actively doing something even for a moment gives me the opportunity to come back to my thoughts or circumstances with a clearer mind and I am a different person entirely in that moment. 😊
As a bus driver of special needs students, I have endured several years of high stress. This year was my first ever visit to a heart doctor because my blood pressure was elevated. I signed up for yoga classes, again, and the breathing techniques you preformed is a technique we do to calm us before movements, during the movements, at the end to release the muscles. It works. My whole body is less tense and I feel more calm. My blood pressure is also lower. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, many will be very helpful to me as I start a different bus route .
I really enjoyed those years with children and when I was teaching. I never felt real anxiety and stress until I retired. Early in my retirement I had a dumb accident that took up nearly a year in rehab. And now several friends are dealing with serious health issues or widowhood. My parents are in their 90s and always have some issue, along with negative dementia-related personality changes. And then there are the money issues. Will I have enough to see me through? I worry more about my children now than I did when they were younger. Physically, I have more and more limitations. So much to stress about. I’m really having to work on my mindset, like Ben talks about.
Well, it was really interesting to hear Ben’s approach. Sometimes is good to change perspective on things. He touched some good points I thought. People in general have been always stressed. If we just think how life used to be before having all the conveniences of our time. Or when gathering food was a matter of life or death. Humans have survived thousand and thousands of years of a very stressful life of hunger, extreme weather, oppression, you name it. Before psychologists, people would share their burden with other family members, neighbors or the other members of their communities. Our modern society kind of lost that habit to build this kind of support network. So we need to go back to be more altruistic, put less emphasis on ourselves, drop the constant go-go- go attitude and make more time for reflection instead. We need to appreciate more what we have and be content with it. so yeah, Ben had some very valid points to add to the conversation.Always a pleasure to watch your channel, thank you!

You and your husband are so wise and funny to boot! :) My husband and I haven't been blessed with children, but in my career as a reading teacher I've seen the stress level of parents rising, along with the stress level of the children I teach. There are many reasons for this, of course, but one thing that saddens me is how BUSY families are. Sports, clubs, endless activities, AP classes...childhood for many has become so much more frenetic. When children talk about their weekend, again and again what they most treasure is just down time...silly time with parents and friends...being outside, daydreaming, reading a book, playing a family game. I'm looking forward to reading your next book, Jennifer. I'm certain you have much insightful wisdom to share. Thank you, and enjoy the day!

Lovely video, great ideas, not to mention how cute you both are! I just wanted to say that having twin babies was very stressful, but they grow and learn, which is exciting and rewarding. A very stressful aspect for many of us who are retired is that of caring for our aging parents. It’s so difficult to watch our beloved parents lose faculties, mobility, and independence. I couldn’t do it without prayer. 🙏🏻

Love hearing Ben's thoughts. He has a lot of common sense, which no one seems to have anymore. "Stop wanting" is a big problem, in my opinion also, as no one seems happy with what they have anymore. Be grateful for all we are blessed with. Good show. My stress in life seemed to be "gimme gimme gimme!" all the time. Now I see how superficial that is.

This was recommended to me just today and I found it interesting that it is still so apt in COVID times. This has been an unusually difficult time but your tips are so basic and timeless. As with so much of what you discuss on your channel, there is value in revisiting what has helped people for centuries. At least that is true for me. I find the stress percentage low as well. Money has always been a lot of my stress. I love all of these tips as well as urs. I think the key is determining which type of stress ur under and take the appropriate action.

Being retired should mean relaxation, but like many of my friends, our parents are elderly and require our care. Not all become sweet old people, especially when confused with Alzheimer's.

What an excellent and insightful conversation! My friends and I often talk about how we still have stress in our lives and we are all retired. We thought things would be different somehow, but the stressors have just morphed into other issues. I think it is part of the human condition, so it's important to develop healthy ways to combat stress. I'm so thankful Jesus is Lord of my life. His grace and peace are worth more to me than any worldly possession.

The last idea about not wanting put me in mind of a discovery I made when my children were young. They seemed to spend the entire month of December saying, "I know what you can get me for Christmas..." (as though they were giving me a golden opportunity.) I began making a point of completing my Christmas shopping before the end of November. When they would mention what they wanted, I would tell them that I had already finished my shopping. That seemed to cause a shift in the atmosphere of our home in December, and we focused more on the reason for the season. Thanks for another great video!
I’m 45 and I feel that the older I get the less stressed. If I do feel nervous or stressed I just change my thinking. And I agree with what you said about just slowing down everything your doing, sometimes when I feel anxious I do that and it makes such a difference. Also loved having your husband on, you two are great together. I hope he comes on again I really enjoyed this video!

I agree that it works wonderfully doing external things to deal with stress like baths, massages, exercise because for me, stress results in a brain loop that I have to break in order to let go of stress. I always tell my husband “I need to get out of my head and into my body”. Focusing on the physical sensation of actively doing something even for a moment gives me the opportunity to come back to my thoughts or circumstances with a clearer mind and I am a different person entirely in that moment. 😊
As a bus driver of special needs students, I have endured several years of high stress. This year was my first ever visit to a heart doctor because my blood pressure was elevated. I signed up for yoga classes, again, and the breathing techniques you preformed is a technique we do to calm us before movements, during the movements, at the end to release the muscles. It works. My whole body is less tense and I feel more calm. My blood pressure is also lower. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, many will be very helpful to me as I start a different bus route .

I really enjoyed those years with children and when I was teaching. I never felt real anxiety and stress until I retired. Early in my retirement I had a dumb accident that took up nearly a year in rehab. And now several friends are dealing with serious health issues or widowhood. My parents are in their 90s and always have some issue, along with negative dementia-related personality changes. And then there are the money issues. Will I have enough to see me through? I worry more about my children now than I did when they were younger. Physically, I have more and more limitations. So much to stress about. I’m really having to work on my mindset, like Ben talks about.

Well, it was really interesting to hear Ben’s approach. Sometimes is good to change perspective on things. He touched some good points I thought. People in general have been always stressed. If we just think how life used to be before having all the conveniences of our time. Or when gathering food was a matter of life or death. Humans have survived thousand and thousands of years of a very stressful life of hunger, extreme weather, oppression, you name it. Before psychologists, people would share their burden with other family members, neighbors or the other members of their communities. Our modern society kind of lost that habit to build this kind of support network. So we need to go back to be more altruistic, put less emphasis on ourselves, drop the constant go-go- go attitude and make more time for reflection instead. We need to appreciate more what we have and be content with it. so yeah, Ben had some very valid points to add to the conversation.Always a pleasure to watch your channel, thank you!

You and your husband are so wise and funny to boot! :) My husband and I haven't been blessed with children, but in my career as a reading teacher I've seen the stress level of parents rising, along with the stress level of the children I teach. There are many reasons for this, of course, but one thing that saddens me is how BUSY families are. Sports, clubs, endless activities, AP classes...childhood for many has become so much more frenetic. When children talk about their weekend, again and again what they most treasure is just down time...silly time with parents and friends...being outside, daydreaming, reading a book, playing a family game. I'm looking forward to reading your next book, Jennifer. I'm certain you have much insightful wisdom to share. Thank you, and enjoy the day!
