Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you repot that splendid Calathea. Absolutely beautiful specimen. Please Stay safe and well too xxxx Mags
Thank you for your informative and very useful videos. It was a delight to watch this video as you speak normally. I don't really know, but I think most people like this natural talking more than that robotic way!
I'm so upset, I didn't repot mine soon enough after noticing it might root bound and it went so limp that I'm going to have to prune a lot of leaves that are too damaged to bounce back - absolutely gutted - thanks for the helpful video!
What a beautiful plant, I am on my 2nd one....it is growing but it has had issues....I hope to have a nice one as yours one day! There us hope! Nice video thank you the green pot does look so nice with the green tops and purple undersides!,,
Thanks for the incredibly informative videos; they’re very concise and too the point, super refreshing! What potting mix did you use for this? I’m aware it depends on micro climate, pot type, plant type etc. and that these are moisture loving plants, but I’m finding really opposing information online and that some people in climates like ours (cold and humid) are actually finding much better results in aroid mixes! Would love to know what you’d recommend
Love your furry feathered cal. Mine exactly same size ❤ Why I'm asking ! You keep saying it's best to cut roots in plants. Knife across bottom. Fresh soil in. So why not in this case ???. Thanks..
Question? If you were to just cut back the roots, replenished with new soil & placed back into the same pot, would it have survived? And if not? why not? thx
Thanks for the video! If the root-bound ness has resulted in a little footy/wooden mound at the heart of where the stems grow from, can I save it, or is it ruined? I have loosened the bottom roots and repotted it, but was worried to unsettle the top bit where the leaves come from and fish breaking up the plant. I’d appreciate a response! I also have only had mine a year and was shocked by the root growth!
I have a rootbound calathea (same type as this one). I would like to divide it because I want to keep it in its current container. Could I cut it in half vertically and also cut off part of the roots from the bottom? Otherwise it won’t have any fresh soil and room at the bottom…. Hope to hear from you!
Great informative video! Cathaleas are challeging indeed. I found that out with my rattlesnake plant that currently has yellowish marks on the top of leaves and brown edges. I've since moved it from a South facing window to a bright northern window. Do you water plants prior to repotting? I have 2 varigated rubber plants that I wish to combine in one pot. Thx.
Put a wet paper towel in the pot and cover your calathea at night with a plastic cloche. This will give it the humidity it needs and help with the browning. I do this every night as my nighttime routine and think of it as putting my plants to bed for the night
Now that this has been re-potted, would you top water it or bottom water it? Since there's no inner container I'm assuming this one isn't bottom watered but if you do I'm curious what your method is (since there's no inner container). Thank you!
Just found out my warscewiczii was just as badly rootbound and repotted it as well. Could this have been the reason that the last 8 new leaves it's put out have been dramatically smaller than the rest?
Which Calathea is this? I have a baby one and it isn't too impressive. I was going to give it away, but now that I have seen the grown up version I am changing me mind...how do I make it grow big fast (before I lose patience)?
I'm glad I found your video! I have a calathea exactly as yours but some steams are bending from the base. the leaves are fine for what I think is the amount of stems that make it bend on one side. Does this makes sense? what do you think and what do you recommend? I hope you can help me
@@SheffieldMadePlants It was a little dry, I gave it a bath and I am wetting the leaves but it still looks “sad”. One side of the plant is completely drooping from below. Do you recommend repotting?
@@andreacardenas7231 repot if it's rootbound otherwise I'd leave it. If it's one side maybe that side isn't getting enough light? I'm sure it will perk up soon but you might need to trim some leaves.
I see this pot’s bottom has only one hole, so what proper pot to grow indoor plants , use one hole or many holes in bottom ? I recently have changed all plants to multiple holes still some plants make it look good some still dying ?
@@SheffieldMadePlantsdoes your new green pot has a hole at the bottom please? I’m new to being a plant parent, I have a few pots like your green one, but they don’t have hole(s) and I’m not sure if it’s safe to use them. Please kindly confirm, thank you 😊
Hi - just caught this - beautiful plant - followed it whilst repotting a root bound calathea - just wondered if the decorative pot it went into has drainage holes? I have quite a few extra decorative pots and wonder if I can just repot my plants into them as they have no drainage holes or any holes to take up water from the bottom 🤔.
He says, "I'll put this tray here to catch any debris....." and he pulls out this little cake pan 'tray'. Really? I repot something and I get dirt strewn from the kitchen to the bedroom, all originating from my living room where I repotted a 3 inch pot plant into a 6 inch plant pot AND I used a 3' x 2 foot low edged tub to do it in! Dirt is magical.... I swear it floats from one room to the other. Sigh.
That is one Gorgeous plant!! I bought one as per your recommendation! I love this plant! I think it's my favorite plant at the moment!

It’ll bounce back and push out new leaves in no time
Repotted my calathea tonight!

Yeah I really like it. What issues have you had?
Lovely impressive plant. Makes a statement
Looks great in the green pot now
Beautiful plant. Enjoy your videos. Take care.
Yeah I really like it. Not too fussy like other Calatheas too. Thanks for watching!
Hi I'm so happy I came across ur videos I've got this plant & learned alot from ur video hope my plant gets as beautiful as urs

Thanks. I use a simple mix of 5 parts compost 2 parts perlite for pretty much all my non-succulent plants
I have the same pot for my plant!!!
Love your furry feathered cal. Mine exactly same size ❤
Why I'm asking ! You keep saying it's best to cut roots in plants. Knife across bottom. Fresh soil in. So why not in this case ???.

I didn’t really know about it at this point. I’ve done it since
Thanks for the video. Would cutting the bottom of the roots kill the plant?
No root pruning is fine
@@SheffieldMadePlants glad to know. Thankyou 👍😊
Question? If you were to just cut back the roots, replenished with new soil & placed back into the same pot, would it have survived? And if not? why not? thx
Yes root pruning works
Curious as to why you didn't root prune this one, is calathea just too delicate?
It wasn’t on my radar at the time 😁. I’ve root pruned it since

I think I'd leave the central bit alone. You've repotted it and that should be good enough. See how it gets on, it should be fine.
I have a rootbound calathea (same type as this one). I would like to divide it because I want to keep it in its current container. Could I cut it in half vertically and also cut off part of the roots from the bottom? Otherwise it won’t have any fresh soil and room at the bottom….

Thank you. I'm sure it will do well in its new spot. I don't water prior to repotting. I've found it's not necessary

@My Daily Reward What a great tip! Thanks for that, I'll definitely give it a go.
Hi! Im having problems with my calathea rufibarba. Can you please show me where yours is placed in your house? Thanks a lot!
It's about 3 meters from the window but its got a grow light over it
Now that this has been re-potted, would you top water it or bottom water it? Since there's no inner container I'm assuming this one isn't bottom watered but if you do I'm curious what your method is (since there's no inner container). Thank you!
Yeah it doesn't have an inner pot so I top water. Wherever there is an inner pot I'll bottom water
@@SheffieldMadePlants Thank you 💫
Does your new green pot have drainage holes??
It doesn’t. Living quite happily in there 😁
Please Tell me, what do you have as soil ? what is your calathea mixture ?
I get my soil from sybotanica these days. They’ve a mix for most types of plants
@@SheffieldMadePlants i dont leave in your country, could you tell us what there is inside ?
Just found out my warscewiczii was just as badly rootbound and repotted it as well. Could this have been the reason that the last 8 new leaves it's put out have been dramatically smaller than the rest?
Probably yes. Not enough nutrients for it to grow properly
Which Calathea is this? I have a baby one and it isn't too impressive. I was going to give it away, but now that I have seen the grown up version I am changing me mind...how do I make it grow big fast (before I lose patience)?
Elgergrass. Light, water, nutrients and lots of patience 😁
Should I trim the roots when repotting and pruning a root bound calathea?
Yes roots can be pruned. They respond well. Don’t cut off more than a third max.
I was wondering what your soil mix consits of and ratios not sure if you made a video on it. Is it the same for all your plants? Thanks
5 parts general garden compost and 2 parts perlite. Nice and simple

One hole is normally sufficient so long as water can escape.
