I have been using this bad-boy for 6 years, for work, I take about 3500 photos a year. This has been rock solid, for what I need it for. Good Battery still going strong. Easy transfer to computer. Good flash. It has taken a beating, dropped many times. Replacing it this month with a google pixel xl 2 - that I will use solely as a camera.
Hope everything is going well with the Pixel 2. I loved mine so much when I got it right after release that I never used it as a phone, just as a product photography camera & internet device b/c I didn't want to risk it outside the house. I do still have several old Cyber-Shots, including the W800, b/c there's something about their macro firmware that captures iridescent surfaces that my DSLR likes to try to "correct" really well.

I had used it for a short amount of time many years ago, so I don't know in detail how it works. If resetting the camera doesn't fix it then it is probably malfunctioning. 2:57 The purple streak of light coming off the lightbulb reminded me of early 2010s entry level cameras, too much light and a sensor might pickup on other things. Is this being achieved because entry level cameras have smaller sensors?

This is a very very basic camera. The cheapest you can get from a large company like Sony. If you are going to get it, please try it out for a while before you go on a big trip to make sure it works how you want and the quality is what you expect. You definitely don't want to go on a trip without knowing what to expect from a camera.

If you specifically want optical zoom you can find something. If you want a camera apart from a phone you can find something. It depends a lot on what a person is trying to do. Anything task to top a smartphone is getting into $600+. Pretty much the state of the market and what camera companies offer these days. Sony A6100, Canon R10, Canon M50ii, Nikon Z30, Sony ZV-E10, and others in the entry level bracket will have more features and capabilities than a phone. If you specifically want a pocket camera that's better than a phone the only quality options are the price of a flagship phone (Sony RX100 series).

From what I remember this camera doesn't have wireless connectivity so an app won't work. You need an SD card reader for your computer and/or phone. Most retailers like Best Buy will have them. For the mac you can use a standard USB SD card reader I assume (I don't use Apple stuff so not sure). For the phone sometimes you can find SD card readers specifically for them that have the correct USB connector but that depends on your phone's ability to communicate with the reader properly (called USB-OTG, "on the go" in the micro-USB era and most USB-C phones will be recent enough too. For apple phones a lightning port? SD card reader might be available).

As far as I know the camera doesn't have a slow motion video mode, but I only used the camera for a short amount of time to make this. I would assume the phone is better in pretty much every regard. Your phone even has a 5x optical telephoto module which is the range of this camera's optical zoom lens. Very few cameras like this are relevant compared to phones these days. You'd probably have to get something like the Sony RX100 series camera to get a quality upgrade, but those are very expensive.

The B500 is more functional but won't fit in a pocket. There is a Nikon A1000 that's a mix of the two. If you don't care about zooming in, current smartphones have similar image quality.
Sorry, I only used this camera for a short amount of time last year. I don't recall specifics at this point. Generally cameras will keep some settings between being powered off and on. This specific camera is so limited that there wouldn't be a lot of things to change. Time and date are always kept in cameras if you are talking about settings like that.
If you don't have a manual for the camera, it is available online. I doubt this camera has manual focus mode, but there are ways to adjust how the autofocus works like what that manual page talks about.

The only benefit of this over a smartphone, assuming you have one, is the zoom lens. If you can't figure out the G5 then this might be slightly easier to use, but it's also a very a limited camera that you can't really grow with.
The only benefit of a camera like this is the optical zoom lens, but even then the very cheap digicams like this have pretty low photo quality and haven't been updated in many years at this point. This camera camera came out in 2014 so it's 10 years old.

Again, the only potential benefit is the optical zoom lens if you need more than the phone provides. An actual camera that would even have a chance of competing with a recent iphone is something like the Sony RX100 series of cameras.

Sony's CIPA rating is "up to 200 shots". No idea how accurate that is and will depend on flash use and how long the screen stays on. This camera does not have wifi or bluetooth, so can't use Sony's phone app. You might be able to buy a special cable for your phone to connect a usb memory card reader (or maybe directly connect the camera through usb), but that feature depends on the phone. Figure out if your phone has "USB OTG" support id tou want to try that. Otherwise get the pictures on a computer then transfer them through usb, email them, or upload them to a service like Google Drive so you can download them to the phone.
There is a good chance your phone takes higher quality photos. The main reason these tiny cheap cameras still are around is the optical zoom lens. I don't think you'd get much benefit from that for car photos. If you want a small camera that has a quality benefit look for a used original Sony RX100. Or if you don't care about size consider a used DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. KEH.com and UsedPhotoPro.com sell used gear with a warranty usually. KEH has a chat feature on their site or you could call them. These companies don't usually sell the camera and lens together as a kit but I assume one of their employees could help you get a compatible camera and lens (eg. a simple aps-c DSLR with a 18-55mm lens shouldn't be too expensive if you ask them for the cheapest option with a warranty)
Is your goal to learn photography? This camera doesn't have any modes that would help with that. I'd suggest saving up for a camera that you can change the lenses attached to it. Maybe something like the Canon EOS M200 or Sony A6000. The problem with cameras like this is that these days they are not much different than a smartphone camera besides the zoom lens attached, though some smart phones are now including zoom lenses and multiple cameras in them too. If money is really an issue you could also consider a used camera.
All of these old 1/2.3" sensor digicams are pretty similar. Getting the most recent one you can find is probably your best bet. If the optical zoom lens isn't the reason you want one of these then use a smartphone instead. Another option if you can find it is an original Sony RX100. It has a larger sensor and should produce higher quality results compared to anything like these cameras.

@@drraf6984 I know nothing about those cameras and this Sony I looked at for a few hours years ago but I will say the Sony is one of the cheapest cameras possible and its features were limited so probably one of the worst options. Like I said a used RX100 is a better option or a phone unless you really need an optical zoom lens camera.

Definitely not. Better to use a recent smartphone. A dedicated camera that would be good for video is a lot more expensive (Sony zv-e10, Canon M50ii, Nikon z30, etc)
I've used this camera for quite some time now: you can use it on a laps of 1-3 days and yes, you can easily swipe batteries on batteries. For the charging it's with a little plug in system. You do not really need to buy a second battery considering the pretty solid quality of the one that is given.

Maybe they're able to do that b/c chip shortages have driven up camera prices. Appears to be a camera from 2012. An amusement to play around with if you have access to one. If your goal is decent photos then use a recent smartphone instead. same goes for this camera in the video. These digicams have an optical zoom lens which is good and still not prevalent in smartphones, but other than that feature they are all old worn out technology that camera companies basically abandoned outside of cameras like the Sony RX100, but even that camera hasn't been updated much lately.

Lauren, I don't use mac computers. I would assume connect the camera through USB and use whatever file management thing is in mac computers to copy over the pictures to your computer. Otherwise you would need a SD card reader to read the memory card directly.

Couldn't find this information anywhere so I'm asking it here. Does this work as a usb powered camera as webcam if it had no batteries? Do i need a dummy battery if that's not the case.
If the example photos in this video looked alright to you, sure. If not then definitely no. All I can do is show people what a camera outputs and they need to decide for themselves. Personally I'd spend more for a camera with interchangable lenses. You could even consider something used to lower the cost. There are online sellers like KEH and Used Photo Pro that sell used gear with a ~6 month warranty.

If you have a recent midrange smartphone it's probably better than either of these cameras with photos. It looks like that Samsung is from 2011, so it's likely that image quality is somewhat worse on that camera than this Sony.

To get higher image quality you'd need to step up to a much more expensive camera, most of them are a lot bigger too. Cameras like the Canon EOS M200 or the Sony RX100 series.

Consider saving up for a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. There are various websites that sell used ones too, like: KEH, Used Photo Pro, B&H, and Adorama.
I bought this camera recently at $99 expecting a little more than I should have. I have a canon powershot from 2006 that takes much clearer and more detailed photos with accurate colors compared to this sony ☹ i really wanted to like this sony camera for how quick it operates and having modern controls but photo quality looks like a webcam from the 90's with over saturated unnatural looking colors
Yeah, this is a very basic camera from what I remember. There might be a few settings you can adjust to get more natural photos. Here are two considerations to look at in the online manual: Adjusting "DRO"" helpguide.sony.net/gbmig/45333561/v1/en/contents/TP0000234001.html Picture effect (make sure you are on a normal mode): helpguide.sony.net/gbmig/45333561/v1/en/contents/TP0000234004.html Like you said, and older camera that was more expensive and featured is a better bet a lot of the time. Though digicams like these are a forgotten and neglected type of camera by manufacturers, so I don't think there would be anything remotely in that price range that produces quality photos compared to a recent smartphone outside of needing a long optical zoom. The DSC-W800 came out in 2014 so it's a decade old and it started off as the most budget camera in their lineup.
Add background blur? You won't get much naturally with this camera. It's similar to a smartphone. You'd have to bring the photos into a computer and edit them by hand.
The video quality is very low quality but it is at least able to record videos. The photo resolution is not 1080p (that's only 2 megapixel), but yeah, I think many phones could produce higher quality images when used at their native focal length.
Smartphone, You won't find anything at that price new. Maybe something used but a recent smartphone will be better with everything except zoom. In that case get whatever newest name brand camera you can find if you want something small like this. Toward the end of their relevance they were all pretty similar in each price point feature wise.

This is typical with any camera that uses a CCD sensor. CMOS sensors don't have this phenomenon and you'll just get lens glare.

I would assume the phone is better in pretty much every regard. Your phone even has a 5x optical telephoto module which is the range of this camera's optical zoom lens. Very few cameras like this are relevant compared to phones these days. You'd probably have to get something like the Sony RX100 series camera to get a quality upgrade, but those are very expensive.

The B500 is more functional but won't fit in a pocket. There is a Nikon A1000 that's a mix of the two. If you don't care about zooming in, current smartphones have similar image quality.
Does the settings stay after the camera is off or does it restart?
Sorry, I only used this camera for a short amount of time last year. I don't recall specifics at this point. Generally cameras will keep some settings between being powered off and on. This specific camera is so limited that there wouldn't be a lot of things to change. Time and date are always kept in cameras if you are talking about settings like that.

What you see in the video is the extent of what I did with the camera so I can't personally help there. I doubt this camera has manual focus mode, but there are ways to adjust how the autofocus works like what that manual page talks about.

The only benefit of this over a smartphone, assuming you have one, is the zoom lens. If you can't figure out the G5 then this might be slightly easier to use, but it's also a very a limited camera that you can't really grow with.

The only benefit of a camera like this is the optical zoom lens, but even then the very cheap digicams like this have pretty low photo quality and haven't been updated in many years at this point. This camera camera came out in 2014 so it's 10 years old.

@@hoangtran5415 Pretty much all of these old digicams would be considered vintage at this point. Don't expect good image qualify from them. Again, the only potential benefit is the optical zoom lens if you need more than the phone provides. An actual camera that would even have a chance of competing with a recent iphone is something like the Sony RX100 series of cameras.

Sony's CIPA rating is "up to 200 shots". No idea how accurate that is and will depend on flash use and how long the screen stays on. I used this camera for an hour or two whenever I made this video so I've no data on that personally.

Do you know how to transfer photos from the camera to your phone?
This camera does not have wifi or bluetooth, so can't use Sony's phone app. You might be able to buy a special cable for your phone to connect a usb memory card reader (or maybe directly connect the camera through usb), but that feature depends on the phone. Figure out if your phone has "USB OTG" support id tou want to try that. Otherwise get the pictures on a computer then transfer them through usb, email them, or upload them to a service like Google Drive so you can download them to the phone.

There is a good chance your phone takes higher quality photos. The main reason these tiny cheap cameras still are around is the optical zoom lens. I don't think you'd get much benefit from that for car photos. If you want a small camera that has a quality benefit look for a used original Sony RX100. Or if you don't care about size consider a used DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. KEH.com and UsedPhotoPro.com sell used gear with a warranty usually. KEH has a chat feature on their site or you could call them. These companies don't usually sell the camera and lens together as a kit but I assume one of their employees could help you get a compatible camera and lens (eg. a simple aps-c DSLR with a 18-55mm lens shouldn't be too expensive if you ask them for the cheapest option with a warranty)

Is your goal to learn photography? This camera doesn't have any modes that would help with that. I'd suggest saving up for a camera that you can change the lenses attached to it. Maybe something like the Canon EOS M200 or Sony A6000. The problem with cameras like this is that these days they are not much different than a smartphone camera besides the zoom lens attached, though some smart phones are now including zoom lenses and multiple cameras in them too. If money is really an issue you could also consider a used camera.

All of these old 1/2.3" sensor digicams are pretty similar. Getting the most recent one you can find is probably your best bet. If the optical zoom lens isn't the reason you want one of these then use a smartphone instead. Another option if you can find it is an original Sony RX100. It has a larger sensor and should produce higher quality results compared to anything like these cameras.

@@drraf6984 I know nothing about those cameras and this Sony I looked at for a few hours years ago but I will say the Sony is one of the cheapest cameras possible and its features were limited so probably one of the worst options. Like I said a used RX100 is a better option or a phone unless you really need an optical zoom lens camera.

I've used this camera for quite some time now: you can use it on a laps of 1-3 days and yes, you can easily swipe batteries on batteries. For the charging it's with a little plug in system. You do not really need to buy a second battery considering the pretty solid quality of the one that is given.

Maybe they're able to do that b/c chip shortages have driven up camera prices. Appears to be a camera from 2012. An amusement to play around with if you have access to one. If your goal is decent photos then use a recent smartphone instead. same goes for this camera in the video. These digicams have an optical zoom lens which is good and still not prevalent in smartphones, but other than that feature they are all old worn out technology that camera companies basically abandoned outside of cameras like the Sony RX100, but even that camera hasn't been updated much lately.

Lauren, I don't use mac computers. I would assume connect the camera through USB and use whatever file management thing is in mac computers to copy over the pictures to your computer. Otherwise you would need a SD card reader to read the memory card directly.

If the example photos in this video looked alright to you, sure. If not then definitely no. All I can do is show people what a camera outputs and they need to decide for themselves. Personally I'd spend more for a camera with interchangable lenses. You could even consider something used to lower the cost. There are online sellers like KEH and Used Photo Pro that sell used gear with a ~6 month warranty.

As far as I can tell the only different is the lens. The W830's lens is 25-200 mm which would give you more ability to zoom into things far away.

If you have a recent midrange smartphone it's probably better than either of these cameras with photos. It looks like that Samsung is from 2011, so it's likely that image quality is somewhat worse on that camera than this Sony.

@@rochelleaquino8095 The problem with all of these tiny small sensor cameras is that they don't have a whole lot going for them besides the long zoom lens compared to phones. To get higher image quality you'd need to step up to a much more expensive camera, most of them are a lot bigger too. Cameras like the Canon EOS M200 or the Sony RX100 series.

I bought this camera recently at $99 expecting a little more than I should have. I have a canon powershot from 2006 that takes much clearer and more detailed photos with accurate colors compared to this sony ☹ i really wanted to like this sony camera for how quick it operates and having modern controls but photo quality looks like a webcam from the 90's with over saturated unnatural looking colors
Yeah, this is a very basic camera from what I remember. There might be a few settings you can adjust to get more natural photos.

Like you said, and older camera that was more expensive and featured is a better bet a lot of the time. Though digicams like these are a forgotten and neglected type of camera by manufacturers, so I don't think there would be anything remotely in that price range that produces quality photos compared to a recent smartphone outside of needing a long optical zoom. The DSC-W800 came out in 2014 so it's a decade old and it started off as the most budget camera in their lineup.

Add background blur? You won't get much naturally with this camera. It's similar to a smartphone. You'd have to bring the photos into a computer and edit them by hand.

The photo resolution is not 1080p (that's only 2 megapixel), but yeah, I think many phones could produce higher quality images when used at their native focal length.

Smartphone, You won't find anything at that price new. Maybe something used but a recent smartphone will be better with everything except zoom. In that case get whatever newest name brand camera you can find if you want something small like this. Toward the end of their relevance they were all pretty similar in each price point feature wise.
