  • The Clothes You’ll ALWAYS Regret Buying | Anti Haul 2023
I love fashion and fashion trends but I'm equally as passionate about not wasting money on clothes you don't get enough wear out of. Of course I've made mistakes in the past buying pieces for all the wrong reasons and I'm hoping today's video will help avoid you falling into the same trap. As I mentioned this video is inspired by the lovely Christina Mychas here on UA-cam and I'd encourage you to watch her video after this one. She has a great channel focused on intentional fashion and minimalism and her content always inspires me. Anyway, I'd really love to hear if you resonate with any of these "regrets" and please let me know of any fashion and trend regrets you have in the comments below. I'd love to hear where you may have slipped up so I also don't make the same mistake. Anyway, thanks SO much for watching and I will see you in the next one.

I don't necessarily have to wear a piece often to feel it has value in my wardrobe. I do have at home clothes for cooking, cleaning, and gardening. I am not going to wear my "good" clothes which will probably get ruined for these activities.

I will have paint from crafting, thread from sewing, or food from cooking stuck to my clothing that I wear around the house. For those saying an apron is the answer, ya'll must be much more tidy than I am, that just won't protect my sleeves, or knees. I keep my house on the cool side, and I wear a fleece jacket over my clothing. I just try not to answer the front door with it on. 😉

Oh my goodness - it's so true, about shopping for the fantasy self. A few years ago, I began following religiously a bunch of fashion content creators, and I'd find myself looking at a dress or outfit in a shop and think, "Well this would be lovely for a garden party/Sunday brunch/girls' weekend away, etc." I do NONE of those things, as dreamy as they all sound. Thankfully, I typically shop at thrift stores, so it wasn't too expensive of a lesson, and I've calmed down and been realistic in my shopping.

My fantasy self has a yacht off the coast! 🤣😂 I don’t live an “elevated” life, and some of those pieces just aren’t worth having for me. I’m becoming much more realistic about who I am, where I live, and what I do. I also live in a smaller home now. I don’t have space to waste.

Exactly right! Also some other hints:
I use really worn or rubbish clothes for gardening, and cleaning up mess. That's something people forget to keep, and this causes better clothes to get ruined or worn out too rapidly.
Also if an item is looking a bit tired, I soak it in nappysan or similar then iron it with spray on starch. It's incredible what this does!
Suddenly your item really starts to sing again! It works for jeans, which you should always wash inside out and with the button and zip done up to minimise stretching at the waist.
Avoid clothes with elastine stretch in the fabric, inevitably the stretch atrophies and they look saggy and awful. Stretch is an excuse for bad tailoring and cheap production.
Just don't do it, or if you must, keep it to a small amount. Iron inside out, it reduces shine and most mistakes are not fatal to the garment. Always have a good haircut and colour, that's essential and keep your shoes nourished and clean. Maintain them with a cobbler they're worth their weight in gold if you can find a good one. I've had heels cut down its saved shoes that weren't comfortable before, and various measures extend life. Many things a cobbler can do, but you must buy the best shoes you can afford, get them in sales and get the basics first.
PS Ihear you on the fantasy life...but it's always good to have one or two outfits for special occasion dressing, bjust in case you get invited to some thing but no more than that! IMO

@@neon-heart Yes but use the guides. I don't use nappysan anymore but I'm in Australia and you won't have the same branding, just use oxygen-generated activation it will work. I just cleaned a bag with woven fabric straps and dipped them into a sink of it diluted...gave it a little scrub, rinsed and voilà! Fantastic result!

My fantasy self is this Boho person. But in reality, I always feel uncomfortable or like I am wearing a costume when I try to dress for my fantasy self. I am more of a minimalist in terms of style and that’s when I feel most comfortable in my clothes. But when I see those dresses from Anthropologie , I imagine myself in the field picking flowers which is Not really me, but I can’t seem to let go of it.. There is another Content creator, who says that when you’re trying to dress for a fantasy self it is a result of wanting something that is lacking in your own life. So I’m thinking maybe I just want more for nature, even though I dressed like a minimalist.

In my experience it does feel like you're wearing a costume when you try to change everything all at once.
You could try introducing one thing at a time (maybe like a boho scarf with your minimalist outfit). Once you get used to it and feel comfortable you can add another thing and so on

Also, I remember when I bought three items that an influencer shared... Those items weren't for me... I spent around $300 for them, and I donated them... For many years, I've photographed a lot of my clothing, handbags, and footwear items and store the photos in files on my MacBook Air. That way I know what I have. Plus, I also photograph the inside of my closets and also wheeled clothing racks to keep inventory. I seldom end up repeating items while out shopping. Also, a lot of the times I have the photos with me while shopping as I store them on a camera card and I always carry my tiny Canon pocket camera in my tote bag.
I don't do photos on a cell phone. I do them on the Canon and then when I get home, transfer the fashion item photos to my MacBook Air. Before laptops, I had a handwritten journal. But, due to the laptop era, I also type fashion info notes and store them.
When I'm out and about, I take a photo of me in whatever I'm wearing and then store those photos as when it's time to come up with a quick outfit in the future, I can just go through the photo images and select one. Organization in the beginning, saves a lot of time in the end. I've always been very organized.
    Greetings from Los Angeles

@tam regarding the blazer - an influencer I follow dresses her blazer up and down - she paired her boyfriend blazer with a slim flitting hoodie underneath and it looked really good. She’s in her 40s for reference- maybe that style might suit you?
Also I know what you mean about the white shirt and they are always those plain, unisex white shirts - they just remind me of school and the 14 years of wearing white shirts! 😂 If I’m to wear a white shirt I like those feminine, white, vintage, lacey-type ones that Sezane do.

My mom loved to sew, or at least I think she did. She had six kids; she was either in the garden, out in the field helping my dad, milking cows, or sewing. (Really didn't like cooking or cleaning.) For me, this was great! As a 5-year-old, I started looking at the pattern books and the fabrics, and we were always going to the fabric stores, and started my clothing designing career then. My mom could sew absolutely anything. If I told her I wanted "most of the dress" from Pattern A, but I wanted the sleeves from Pattern B, and the hem to look like Pattern C, she didn't even need the other patterns, just the main one.
For my mom, she just couldn't stand the idea of going to a thrift store and buying and wearing something someone else had worn. (She also couldn't stand anyone other than a family member touching her hair, giving her a perm.) I got to be good enough at sewing that I could make my three kids' clothes when they were little, and then when they got older and I worked more and didn't have time for sewing, we went to stores.
Now most of my clothes come from second-hand stores. I've given up on patterns and fabrics. Prices are just too high and I have no time or patience for that anymore. I can mend, though, and if I really had to, I could sew a garment. I think the last thing I actually sewed was a deerskin dress -- that I punched every hole by hand, stitched it together with sinew by hand, sewed on all the beads by hand, and wore that to powwows for years.
By the time I was a first-grader, I knew a quality fabric and what pattern it would work best with. It was awesome, having new handmade clothes all the time -- and the only way I could have had clothes, because I was a "chubby" and couldn't buy clothes in stores.

Fabulous story and life! I grew. up in remote Australian bush and learned to sew at school, and kept myself entertained for many hours making things. Being able to alter an item of clothing or mend it is invaluable; your mother is really talented. I agree fabrics are terrible these days but you can buy what's known as 'dead stock 'excess designer stuff from wholesalers/manufacturers. I have a making do mentality and it's part of my philosophy of not compulsively shopping but rather, filling gaps in my wardrobe and fixing things.
As a result I have few 'failures' of things I bought but didn't work out. I have most things I need now, this year I just bought some linen shirts and one dress for summer. I'm really really careful and try to keep my things for many years. This is respecting the thing that I own, thinking of the person who made it, and respecting the earth to not throw things out. I'm astounded at people who throw clothes and shoes away in the garbage! Why not donate them? I have no words for. manufacturers who deliberately destroy unsold items to keep them
'exclusive' so they don't have to sell at reduced prices. They maintain ridiculously high prices that way.

My style is very classic with hint of edge. For me a fitted dark jean jacket reads more “put together”-fitted is the key. I got mine from Old Navy years ago. I pair it several ways, for a more dressed up look I do some kind of top, a jean shirt looks nice too, closer fitting sweater or t shirt, and a trouser pant- black, charcoal gray. -green and burgundy look nice too-boots, loafers or low heeled mules. For casual, the same top as above and a pair of trouser jeans. I got mine from J Crew. My go to outfit this fall is a fitted light weight navy sweater, a close fit, slightly cropped dark jean jacket and trouser jeans-slightly dark with multiple shoe options. Add jewelry to your tastes. I dress very minimalistic so I do a less is more approach. This outfit receives positive comments, even from strangers.

This is such a good video…thank you. I agree with you on not wearing clothes you don’t love around the house. If it’s not flattering on me in general then when I see myself in the mirror at home with it on then I am reminded of why I should get rid of that item…I’m actually just accumulating unwanted pieces at that point…such helpful tips…great job! I love and value your work on here. ❤

Many a fashion regret over here partly related to a feeling of scarcity from being plus size and not having many fashionable options in my youth. However, one thing I now try to be more aware of before purchasing something is asking myself if I have the right footwear for it. I’m not someone who wears heels for example as I’m already six feet tall. Shoe comfort and lifestyle are also big factors when making purchases…or at least they should be. 😉

I'm tall too and shoes are a never ending search....II tend to fix my older ones up and keep them....for instance just having the lining fixed on some slides, they are still terrific even though I bought them in 2002. Just need the lining done because it's bunched up. They are red slides and look great with pretty much anything. I'm a big fan of the mule shoe as well. Plus Italian made flat boots, or with a small heel, they are great!

Sooo true the enemy fantasy self or in my case the many fantasy projects 😮 because I am a passionate sewer & upcycler… charity shops really tempt me as I buy clothes often just for the beauty of the fabric…
So this over buying over shopping obsessive behaviour is something we all have to rationalise and constantly question & reassess if we really NEED and really what the intense feeling of WANT is all about… 🧐❤❤❤

Great video and on point! I literally just bought a black lace dress from Zara that I dont have any event to wear to. Just thought, “well it looks great and maybe I’ll have a wedding or party to go to”. Never mind that I have not been to either in almost 10 years and don’t know anyone getting married ! 😂 I follow Nischa and she says “never spend money on future events”. Good advice I seem to forget 😊. Checking now to see if I can still return the dress. AND I confess to having no less than 10 black t-shirts, 5 striped button downs and 16 black sweaters. On the fence about the advice regarding around the house clothes. As a gardener I have a wardrobe dedicated to working in the dirt, etc. I wont ever wear my “A” clothes for this as I’d be ruining them and buying new constantly.

Perfect timing as I am purging my closet of anything that is fantasy lifestyle and not my actual lifestyle. Something that I do, is create a wishlist on my computer and just save whatever I am into at the moment on there instead of going shopping. I go back a few weeks later and usually I don't even want the item anymore, which means most of us buy impulsively without much thought. As for the hat situation, I realized my collecting hats over the past few years is ridiculous. I am not a hat person, but was buying hats just because... for what exactly? I have a few that are great, and a few that need to be donated asap!

This is why I thrift mostly, and keep in mind what I'd do with each piece. I do have a few very fancy gowns I've never worn, and some fancy heels I have barely worn, but they are so pretty and make me feel happy 😅. I'm not normally a shopper who does that, but the dresses are second hand ✋and my guilty pleasure. I can't personally afford to put aside large amounts of $$ for a few pieces of high end, quality clothing.
Things I don't buy anymore: scarves, belts, hats, necklaces, earrings, super trendy items that have a short life in the fashion world, anything from low quality brands, shoes for a specific occasion/highly uncomfortable shoes that are cute

Finding ways to make something work is part of the creative process. Tons of times I've thought something isn't working, when all I needed to do was to style it a bit differently or adapt it with some alterations. Or if it's a colour that isn't flattering to my facial colouring, wear it separated by a colour that is.
Our egos in the West are pretty colossal, pumped up by a false sense of grandiosity, ('because you're worth hit' blah blah blah) and that's what makes us vulnerable to flattery of shop assistants and friends, and to ego gratifying purchases which are unwise.
Develop a deep appreciation who you are, regardless of your clothes, and then they will occupy their rightful place. If something is grossly unfashionable I relegate it to the back of the wardrobe or in a suitcase and stash it away. Then it gets rediscovered. I have bought quite a lot of blue and white this year, but that's a function of my lifestyle these days which is more casual. This is happening with a lot of people. I have 3 hats, 2 of which are on high rotation the other is a special occasion hat, that's it.
Evening wear I have only one dress and it's not a long one. The other items are separates they are easily broken up into more casual settings. I don't worry about recycling I've been doing it for decades now. 2 black leather skirts one A-line and one in softer leather with a slight ruffle or organza netting on the hem.
I give stuff away, sell it (rarely) or throw it out (even more rarely). But generally I keep it. This is a n natural brake on spending as you only have so much room in your closet.

I have A-list clothes and B-list clothes, ones I wear out of the house, and ones I wear at home, for a very specific reason: I have cats. Very cuddly cats. I try not to sit down after I get home from somewhere, before I change clothes. As soon as I am sitting, the cats will be in my lap. Not only are they shedding, but they are climbing all over me. That is when snags can happen. I have more than a few sweaters, etc., that went from being A-list to B-list in a few seconds. So I learned my lesson!

I just cleaned out my closet. And I give most of my clothes to my granddaughters. Two live close and can wear my shoes, clothes and sweaters. My oldest granddaughter lives in another state. And she just came and went through my clothes and sweaters. She can’t wear my shoes. I had a few boxes and bags that went to Goodwill. But I got rid of a lot of things. Then I went through what no one took, and kept a few things. I have nice clothes and clothes for not wearing in public. I live in the country, in Georgia. I have three small dogs who have ruined many of my clothes by getting mud all over me. And the orange clay mud doesn’t come out. So they make a lot of my nicer things into things I only wear around the house real quick. I used to just buy whatever I saw, and thought I needed. I’m getting better. I still buy. But I have slowed down. I only buy particular things I want now. I have run out of room in my closet. And I have things in the guest room closet.

  • @LisaFaiss

I sew. Generally people that have sewn for a while create a muslin made from inexpensive material to ensure style and fit is correct. You can adjust seams, lengths, darts for fit and then transfer to an adjusted pattern and create with more expensive fabric.
Pieces I don’t like go to my painting and grunge work box.
It is difficult to sew for others because they’d have to be available for fitting. And sewing takes a long time so the person you sew for will more likely be a good friend or relative.

I have three pairs of black shorts that I love wearing but all them are made from cotton that attracts lint. It’s so annoying! I have a navy pair of one of the same shorts and that pair doesn’t attract lint and the fabric appears smoother than the black pair - weird!
I sew and I found I was making things I was inspired to make but not wearing them. I now pay more attention to the colours, fabrics, styles and design lines of what I make to ensure they suit me and fit into the rest of my wardrobe. I’ve been wearing everything I make since changing this habit.

On your thumbnail, I noticed you have a striped sweater/top crossed off. I had to smile at that and it made me curious about the rest of the video. Striped tops are so classically French and can so easily be dressed up or down. I love stripes and of course have several and even a pinstriped summer dress. Baseball caps, I absolutely hate them. I never pay attention to designers and in fact avoid anything advertising their logo, be it belts, bags or clothes. If I purchase a designer piece it is because I love it...with an eye on price, of course. My personal style is between classic and elegant but often casually elegant. Except Sundays when I go no makeup and am in my gardening/work clothes.

I appreciate what you said about wearing B level pieces around the house, but that's something I have to do lol. I DESTROY everything I wear around the house (or my kid does). My sisters have the same problem. So for me, it does actually work to wear B level pieces around the house, because it's the worst feeling to destroy awesome pieces of clothing you love, hahahahaha. Thanks so much for this video. I'm actually planning on NOT buying new clothes for 2024, so I'll be reviewing this video and others like it pretty frequently to help motivate me to NOT buy new clothes (unless absolutely necessary).
