So here's the thing about John Constantine: He knows how to take a losing hand and win with it. That's why he constantly screws over demons; he takes deals and contracts designed to put him on the losing end and manipulates things so he comes up on top. This is a man who beat lung cancer by selling his soul, three times over, to the most powerful demons he could find; the three convened on his death bed, realized that going to war over his soul would be a bloody stalemate, and healed him to avoid the conflict. If you read Hellblazer he starts off with a fair amount of knowledge of the occult and knows how to do a few things with the right set ups but his real power was in his quick wit, charm, ability to influence others, and his sheer dumb luck (which has since becomes a power called synchronicity wave traveling if I recall correctly which is basically luck manipulation). He's a depressed drunk, an occult detective, a swindler, and always gets into trouble or has trouble find him. He was pretty much a regular human with regular human weaknesses who could do extraordinary things but he and anyone who can call him a friend often suffered greatly because of his actions. His power has scaled WAY up over the years to ludicrous proportions which I don't think is for the better, there's not really much reason for him to be so powerful and I think giving him such crazy power really detracts from who he is as a character. Also bonus fact: John Constantine knows all the entrances and exits to both heaven and hell and effectively blackmailed God to not send him to hell as he would cause even more problems if he was there.
Glad you wrote this, cuz I read some of Hellblazer and loved Constantine, but this video made him seem like a completely different character. I guess this is the new Constantine?
A friend of mine thinks John Constantine is the coolest. He likes everything about John, from his powers to his attitude and I do have to agree that yes, John is a bad-ass. I know some people like Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, but I personally prefer Matt Ryan. Not only just because he looks like John Constantine and is British. But because his portrayal is closer to the comics.
@@taytoosharma7003 I did mention that there are people who did like Keanu Reeves as John Constantine. However, I also pointed out that, I, myself prefer Matt Ryan's performance because is it closer to the comics. That is solely my preference.
I don't know, Ryan always feels like a guy doing a very good cosplay of Constantine, but that's all. There's none of the edge, none of John the bastard to him. But that may not really be his fault. Pretty much no adaptation ever wrote Constantine like he really was in the comics. The dirt, grit, sex and politics always get smoothed over for a four-quadrant friendly adaptation. Even in comics John hasn't really been himself since the original Hellblazer title ended.
If he's in Injustice 3 his super move should be forming a magic pentagram around his opponent that he tosses his cigarette onto the salt of the pentagram igniting it with flames from hell.
@@space1734 I wouldn't say low tier, more like mid tier and high tier when he's all hyped up for something. Even when he's drunk he's like mid tier.. Maybe low tier if he lost his arms.
The Shazam part was mentioned in this video. But something happened earlier in that issue that was cooler: He voluntarily stayed inside Enchantress' circle long enough for her to reveal her plan, and then step out of it like it was nothing, while declaring that no magical circle could hold him.
It was a enjoyable movie back then and keanu did a decent performance on how Constantine would be if depowered a bit.. But in terms of Constantine's actual power, it felt kind of lacking.. Maybe because it was a older movie.
@@silencia08 he basically flipped the table. People in the Superman side are basically so OP, that it is impossible for Batman to ever win. So Constantine simply manipulating the strongest 2 to destroy each other (and also some others from both and neutral sides), making it more plausible for Batman to win the war. But in the end, Constantine actually had predicted everything from the start, and he not only manipulating the biggest 2 but also Batman, Superman, Luthor and basically everyone for his own gain. He left in the end and making Bruce looks like teen in his first breakup, but not without putting some idea in Batman's head that will create another chain of events.
I like what they did with him on Legends of Tomorrow and that they kinda brought back the Astra storyline with season 5 but I really wish they would continue his tv show. And I don't know what other people think but if Matt Ryan doesn't play Constantine I'm not interested.
Matt Ryan plays Constantine so well, I also would just lose all interest if someone else played him. His version is so accurate to the comics and really does give justice to Constantine's character. I see so many people wanting Keanu Reeve's version to return but his portrayal just didn't feel right to me personally, not to mention he looks nothing like him and is not British either.
If you really want to be mind blown by the power of some characters watch Webcamparrot. Trust me he is the best power scaler. Ah and btw Constantine is faster then the flash. He rides the synchronicity wave and yeahh that is.. just watch Webcamparrot's video on him....
Part of why i love this character is he's so powerful, but in his earlier stories he's a tortured soul, tragic and his own worst enemy. Very relatable.

4:34 I think every single comic book confuses the word "kill" with the word "sleep". I mean, you can't blame them; kill and sleep are two *very* similar and *very* tough words. One of my favorite aspects of Constantine is that he is such a powerful sorcerer/magician and one I believe is what makes him so popular, is that he constantly chooses to use brain over brawn, defeating overpowered characters. "He's like *bloody* Batman, but better. 10/10 character." -me
ThisIsMetv yes seeing them fight like they ACTUALLY MEAN IT , they are finally doing what they needed to do , MAKE IT MORE MATURE , I like seeing the seriousness , and the cutting in half and watching the superheroes use their full power
I also do, but I think they made a fine job in the DC universe. While they upped his magical prowesses, they kept the fact that what makes him win isn't pwer but wit, bluff, and the willingness to sacrifice things for victory. Once you get used to him throwing spells around, his DC version is quite endearing. And healthier. Even as a chain smoking, drunken, magic addict, backstabbing, depression on legs, he's more good hearted than his vertigo version. At least in the animated films. For example, Vertigo Constantine happily surround himself with useful people he'll manipulate and sacrifice. DC Constantine tries to avoid that as much as possible, caring a bit more for people and keeping them at a reasonable distance because he knows they'll die if they stick around. He'll still sacrifice them though, but he'll try other solutions first.
Yep And just his utter lack of anything resembling a care factor Swamp Thing used tobacco as an avatar to appear to john So john took a pinch of swamp thing for a smoke🤣
I don't know if it is cannon anymore but I liked the idea that John Constantine is powerful because he's one of the fundamental pillars of the DC magical universe. He is the laughing magician, the joker character who will be there at the end of the universe. He is the only one willing to throw himself on the synchronicity highway (basically the magical roulette wheel of chance) and not be ultimately destroyed because he is destined to survive when everybody else dies. Thing is though, just being destined to survive doesn't make him powerful because just surviving doesn't mean you win every fight, can't get hurt, can't fail utterly or be able to save anyone but yourself. Guaranteed survival doesn't make you powerful, it just means you have to live through and with the outcome of everything good or bad. You feel every painful hit, get scared, fail people all the time, and know that if you take any friends along for ride, you may be responsible for their death and have to tell their family. Even worse, he is addicted to the thrill of magic. He is a drug addict who will never OD but will continue to hurt and ruin the lives of those who get close to him. Friends, teammates, enemies, anyone who gets near him can be destroyed while he will survive, bruised and broken but alive. That's why Constantine is so terrifying.
He's a normal bloke Who knows how to access god like power My favorite part from Hellblazer was only a little thing, but it sums him up pretty well He ran out of Tobacco so he took a pinch off Swamp Thing and started rolling a cigarette🤣
He's not normal, He was born favoured by fate, If he is needed to be somewhere he WILL be there. He beat cheating demons at poker to win a house outside of creation. He got himself banned from any afterlife so when the universe ends only the house and John will remain. He's essentially got Plot armor as a birth power. I'm pretty sure he tried to kill himself with a six shooter once and after he landed 5 clicks in a row he put in the final bullet, The gun broke. It's hilarious sometimes. Even if he succeeded though he would just come back.
@@FeedMeSalt And at the end of the day He just wants a cigarette A tumble And a pint What's more normal than that Btw his power is Synchronicity The power to be in the right place at the right time His true power in the original Hellblazer comics was being able to con people, demons angels etc to gain power How he gained most of his powers relics etc was rigged games of chance He won the house in a game of cards ect The problem is the characters been rectconned too many times He has demons blood His powers were passed down by family He killed his brother to gain them Touched by fate ect Originally he didn't even throw fireballs or anything of the sort but was more of a journeyman magician
They're both brainy characters. Batman is a master tactician, intelligent, resourceful & master interrogator. But always believed of the honor code. While John on the other is a witty, cunning & well-sophisticated. He's another brilliant tactician but master manipulator & trickster. These 2 were equal to each other except their methods were quite different, because John is a nasty piece of work. Fighting dirty. John is pesimistic.
@@chuckie1269 nah, Constantine's morality is vastly different to Batman, also he usually doesn't have the excessive power you'd think, but he knows where to get the power, usually by making deals

Constantine is basically like the British version of Batman with no silly suit, no need for prep time, and magic. Come of think he’s like Sherlock Holmes too but with blond hair and magic.
John is a brainy like Batman. In the orginal comics he always depend on his wits before he faced his foes. Magic is his secondary. John is witty, cunning & well-sophisticated. A brilliant tactician, a master manipulator & tricker. He did all this to either friend or foe. Like everyone said: "Careful what you whished for".

Very true, in the original comic John is a brainy character. he's witty, cunning & well sophisticated. Always depending his wits before facing his foes. A brilliant tactician, a master manipulator & a trickster. A persimistic man who observed everyone & everything. A well prepared guy. Thats why he's the most dangerous non superpowered Human to all of them either friend or foe. People who turned to hate him before, now turned to fear.
this has been vvery informative and done constantine great justice! I've always though constantine to be cool when Keanu played him...at that I didn't know he was a DC character..but now all this exposure for the character is just too good. :)
That's what I like in both Constantine and Bats - they're extremely badass but still humane with their flaws and their inability to always (like in 100%) win. Both make mistakes, both lose the people they love, both suffer a lot and both make decisions which their friends or teammates wouldn't approve. Also I really like the style in which our Johnny boy almost kills himself with all that booze and cigs all the time while easily dealing with extremely powerful beings like First of the Fallen or King of Vampires
Yeah very true, both brilliant tacticians but different methods. 1. Batman is cunning, resourceful & driven. He's a master interrogator & martial prowess, but always keeping his code of honor by not killing. 2. John Constantine is witty, cunning & well-sophisticated. He's a master manipulator & a trickster. He's a nasty piece of work with a cynical attitude & pessimistic. He knew the worst is coming so all he to do is to outsmart your foe by fighting dirty.
That's a rather offbeat, but accurate description The only thing is, Archer doesn't really care if anyone gets hurt John agonized over Astra for decades
John is basically the guy playing in a superhero tabletop game who realizes that there's literal magic in the game system, and decides they're gonna go all in on that.
He did meet Lucifer at some point but not in any comic. John did say there were too much 'blood underneath the bridge' between. After Lucifer left hell, one of the first thing he did is to send John a postcard from Perth.
John was able to defy and deny the spectre, able to trap and bind Trigon, destroyed mr mxylplk and even blackmailed god..I mean, what could be more badass than that?
Constantine is underrated, but I like him that way, he's one of the powerhouses of the DC universe. His sliver tounge and magic abilities make him a threat to any person in the justice league, hell any person in the DC universe.
I think the most terrifying thing about Constantine is that, his Synchronicity Wave Riding aside, all of his magic is just stuff he pieced together. No tutelage from the Lords of Order, no Homo Magi ancestry, no possession by a magical force, no super grimmoire from a lost magical temple. He just pieced it all together by reading anything he could get his hands on. Everything he can do, anyone else could do, in theory at least. Its remembering it all and seeing the loopholes that is the challenge.
John Constantine is especially dangerous because he doesn’t hesitate when he has to put his comrades in danger, he will do whatever it takes to beat the opponent. But will always find a way to save his friends.
I hate how they’ve turned Constantine into a super hero. It completely defeats the point of him being just a casual but reluctant observer in the inevitable tragedies that humanity puts themselves through. Back in classic Hellblazer he was much more likely to make the situation worse than to fix anything. Also they’ve given him proper powers. He used to just be an expert in the occult, now he has full on Doctor Strange type powers. In his Vertigo series he had to buy a gun just to shoot a geriatric with a knife, and it wasn’t any less exciting, it’s just that the comics valued telling a story relevant to the goings on of the times over how hard people could punch or how big of an explosion they could make.
That's the reason why I enjoyed original Vertigo series so much. He was a cocky liar who made mess most of the time rather than fix things. Giving him superpowers is just stupid.
Yeah i do agree. Turning Constantine into a Dr. Strange knockoff kinda ruins the entire point of some of his biggest feats. Where he defeated entities orders of magnitude more powerful than himself though bluffs and misdirection.
Completely agree with you. He is a con artist first and occult speacialist second. His powers not coming from his magic (although here and there he cast up some powerfull spells and incantations) but capable mind that outwits all of his foes even the fallen lords.
You got in one bro. Some people (continents) only understand superpowers they just don't get the classic Constantine and the nuances of his character. They are caught in an arms race of superpowers because they cant deal with characters and storylines, they only understand special effects and big explosions.
before watching I just want to thank you for making this video because after watching the new movie, I was asking myself about Constantine's power level the whole time and I have no one to talk to about this. Thanks! thumbs up!

Glad you wrote this, cuz I read some of Hellblazer and loved Constantine, but this video made him seem like a completely different character.

I agree completely
Why do everything has to be similar with comics ? I think Constantine 2005 was actually great portrayal of John Constantine
@@taytoosharma7003 I did mention that there are people who did like Keanu Reeves as John Constantine. However, I also pointed out that, I, myself prefer Matt Ryan's performance because is it closer to the comics. That is solely my preference.
Totally agreed.

The Shazam part was mentioned in this video. But something happened earlier in that issue that was cooler:
He voluntarily stayed inside Enchantress' circle long enough for her to reveal her plan, and then step out of it like it was nothing, while declaring that no magical circle could hold him.
John Constantine is probably one of my favorite comic book characters.
John wick was also Constantine.... he’s bad ass for sure
It was a enjoyable movie back then and keanu did a decent performance on how Constantine would be if depowered a bit.. But in terms of Constantine's actual power, it felt kind of lacking.. Maybe because it was a older movie.

John is very underrated and deserves so much more praise
When John Constantine outwit Batman in Injustice, I swear, I freaking whimpered.
what did he do in Injustice?
I prefer his old school vertigo run the character was more grounded and he only used magic as a last resort
This new Constantine needs a Ravenscar Dosis...
So 2005 Constantine
Yep
And just his utter lack of anything resembling a care factor
Swamp Thing used tobacco as an avatar to appear to john
So john took a pinch of swamp thing for a smoke🤣
They have to buff his magic powers to keep up with the freaks in the DC universe.
That scene on City of Demons where I really thought He could open Hell loose on earth was f*cking amazing.
He's a normal bloke
Who knows how to access god like power
My favorite part from Hellblazer was only a little thing, but it sums him up pretty well
He ran out of Tobacco so he took a pinch off Swamp Thing and started rolling a cigarette🤣

John Constantine's genius is what Batman's preparation 'power' actually look like.
So basically its like batman who has power right?

@@jerseyvoid3123 how about psychic powers? If you could control his mind youd have a big hammer to hit things with
Quite honestly, his main power is basically his knowledge. The more knowledgeable he is over the magic and what he fights, the more powerful he becomes.

John is basically the guy playing in a superhero tabletop game who realizes that there's literal magic in the game system, and decides they're gonna go all in on that.
The thing I know him for is the time he met lucifer.
Yeah & that happened on Earth 666 in Crisis in infinite Earths Part 3.
He did meet Lucifer at some point but not in any comic. John did say there were too much 'blood underneath the bridge' between. After Lucifer left hell, one of the first thing he did is to send John a postcard from Perth.
he meet lucifer in latest run of lucifer . he was invited even to feast table
They also made that scene in the anti monitor thing in the arrow verse show, to bad it sucked so much..
Everyone always leaves out the fact that he made the presence do what he wanted one time
I hope we see Constantine in Young Justice.
John was able to defy and deny the spectre, able to trap and bind Trigon, destroyed mr mxylplk and even blackmailed god..I mean, what could be more badass than that?
Reading the comics instead of watching feat videos?
So john has literal fate armor fatter than even plot armor. I need more of this guy.
Well, he conned God into giving him divine protection.
Constantine is underrated, but I like him that way, he's one of the powerhouses of the DC universe. His sliver tounge and magic abilities make him a threat to any person in the justice league, hell any person in the DC universe.
Don't forget his synchronicity ability! That's his most important magical power.
Not always, he maliciously sacrificed Gary Lester for the greater good
I feel like Constantine is just the embodiment of the whole "surviving by spite" joke
Couldnt have said it better. Comic books have been taken over by braindead normies and children
He's a soldier who looks lost in every single battle but eventually win the war
"Up yours."
