    I love it when I just sit back and enjoy a video like this and unexpectedly pick up a valuable tip-in this case creating two simultaneous inputs so that you have a track’s view when recording even a single part. So many times when I’ve needed that. Now I’ve got it!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  6 років тому +4

      Awesome stuff Stephen. Yes, this is a cool little trick that makes recording so much easier. I think I’ll make a stand-alone video about it as I’ve had a lot of folks tell me they were not aware of this as they only ever record one track at a time.
      Thanks as always for your support. 👍

      So here it is 3 years later, June 14, 2022, and though I am a regular GB user (mainly due to Pete's tutorials) I never knew this and often wondered if there was a way to record tracks but not be in the "amp" view. Thanks Pete!!

    Did you ever finish/release this?
    This is kind of how I go about writing my stuff when I have my guitar available (see my track Sundaye on my channel). I’ll find the chords I like or just hit record and see what happens and sing along while I do that.

    Hey Pete... Great fun this video! Just wondering ... does it sound any different if you have a cheaper electric guitar or bass vs a pricy one if your recording using virtual amps? Like if everything in the setup is exactly the same (interface, cables etc) except the actual guitar ? Thanks!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  3 роки тому

      So yes, the quality of the signal sent from the guitar is a factor in the overall sound. Depends on exactly how cheap the guitar is. Any decent quality guitar will generate a good tone that you can work with.

    • @earthdweller222
      @earthdweller222 3 роки тому

      @@PeteJohnsMusic So I have a Gibson SG decent quality electric and my husband has a cheaper Yamaha Bass guitar he is thinking of upgrading. We use the Steinburg UR22C interface (thanks for those videos too!). I thought maybe it was like MIDI where its just signals going in. Thanks! 🙏

    Great video pete, reminds me of how I write music, jamming to a cool idea and just letting it evolve as you play is my favourite way of composing. I used to compose in Guitar Pro, arranging everything before I went to record but now I much more prefer the more laidback, "see where it takes you" approach you show here.

    When I use a distorted sound for my guitar it sounds really low quality even for a distorted track any reason why?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 роки тому

      What guitar interface or microphone are you using to record? Analog interfaces (using the headphone jack) can generate much more distortion than a digital (USB/lightning) interface.

      @@mrmaramindit's because if you only record one track at a time you see a picture of an amp instead of the overview of all the tracks, and since he prefers to see the song structure and pre-recorded tracks while recording a new track he uses this trick to make GarageBand show him everything.

    @Pete Johns Did you have any problems with latency when recording vocals ? I've got serious latency problems when i try and record scratch vox in garageband on iphone. any ideas how to work around this one ? cheers.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  6 років тому +2

      Hey there my friend. I haven't had many issues with latency using the Steinberg UR12 interface, and not much with other interfaces either. What are you using to record your vocals?

    • @valium-fm7236
      @valium-fm7236 6 років тому +1

      Hey Pete
      I’ve tried a few things, some irig gadget for mics (irig pre?) a shure mic for iPhone 3.5 jack. I even tried the built mic, but there’s still that latency problem. A bit annoying when you want to get ideas down before you forget them .😁

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  6 років тому +1

      Gotcha. Are you using a vocal preset at all? Any of the presets that have the “enhance tuning” option will add latency because the signal is being processed and auto tuned while you sing.

    • @valium-fm7236
      @valium-fm7236 6 років тому +1

      @@PeteJohnsMusic I'll have to check that next time I use garage band. its probably something really simple...but when you haven't a clue (like me) its like knitting fog. I'll let you know how I get on . thanks so much Pete

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  6 років тому

      No worries. It’s a trap because the two most popular vocal presets (Radio Ready and Lead Vocals) have some bad delay and latency by default. If you want to reduce it, disable the “enhance tuning” on these or use “punchy prescribes” which has no tuning.
