As a crusty, cranky old engineer of 50 years I can assure the viewers that this young rooster has the touch. You can't learn it in books..you either get it or you don't. Its a pleasure to watch a Craftsman work.
After 40 years of repairing bumpers i have never seen anyone using a ballpein hammer and sand bag, i have around 30 different hammers , all shapes and sizes, solid steel bench around 50mm thick, but if this process works, then its great, love your channel, keep up the great work, been a fan since the early 80,s with your XA .
Love seeing what a craftsman does behind the scenes to get the results time and time again. keep up the great work and keep the vids coming. As for the Oxalis in your lawn, spray it in the morning while the dew is still present, this will help the poison attach to the foliage then allow the sun to bake those annoying weeds. I'm having the same issues with my lawn after heavy rain and found spraying 1st thing in the morning really helps burn the weeds. Good luck Howard
Hi Howard, Love your work mate, you run a tidy workshop and in my experience that's a sign of a good tradie. Did my apprenticeship with a few old timers building bridges and they would always say stop choking that hammer. Ha ha
It's going to turn great with that Commodore rack , lol . And silver anti silver there hundreds to choose from these days Howard ... Keep up the good work ..
Absolutely loving this series mate! I'm currently in quarantine and this is really helping pass the time while learning a bunch of tips! One question I've (probably a noob question) is there a difference between prepsol and wax and grease remover? Also what's the purpose of the metho/water step? Cheers, Dylan
Another great episode!....of all the things to catch my interest is the mention of the carbon canister, working on an old car myself and helpful hints on your setup to minimise fuel smell would be great as my factory setup just has a long hose that eventually just vents to atmosphere and it taught me why all the older house had detached garages! Never recall a fuel smell in the summernats top 60 hall
They came in, in the late 70’s but wasn’t till much latter that they moved them to the boot. You can set up a elec solenoid to open once the engine is running to vent the canister.
Thanks for sharing all these great videos some very helpful info. Currently hunting down a xc sedan myself always liked them wanting to do one like my fathers one from many years ago.
Great viewing once again Howard. This may sound stupid - but could you please do a segment on how you linish those small parts eg tie rods, trans brackets etc? Thank you
I had planned to do that, I had one done with the intention to film the other one and Darren did it when I wasn't watching. It is difficult to keep moving forward and get the filming done.
Excellent episode again Howard. When you think you are paying attention to detail in your work people, remember....you never are an expert until you epoxy and prime your sandwich plate! Had to have a laugh at that, but then said to myself, attention to detail is everything!
Great video again. Just a suggestion on the rear speaker setup - as tweeters are more directional than woofers have you thought about incorporating them into a cover for the seat belt mounts so they point into the cabin rather than up at the rear windscreen?
I want to convert my single garage into a spray booth and your tips came in handy although I still need to do more research on the many aspects I need to make it a proper functioning booth including the extraction system. Is the refrigerated unit expensive and where would be the best place to look for one Howard ? If you have time, cos I know you're extremely busy mate, could you link the some of the items you point out, such as what I just spoke about and then perhaps the wall mounted filters etc. Your recommendations are worthy of a second look.
The accessibility you give is outstanding Howard. Still enjoying every minute of your series. The drifts you were using. Were they bought or are they Astill specials? And are they just mild steel or repurposed specialty steel? Lawn is coming up a treat. I’m trying to get rid of my clover, but the rain out here is holding me up. Even Pooncarie got 17mm of rain the other day.
Is that your favourite slightly rounded looking wooden straight edge? Haha sorry it just made me smile 😊 I’m pretty sure my bumper would be worse off if I attempted what you are doing! When you say you are doing this for longevity is it because the less bog the better the paint will last?
Hey mate, Yep the least amount of product build up = less shrinkage a movement. especially on the bumper if the car is going to get some use and potential stone chips. The straight edge is a piece of Tasmanian oak. i have many lenghts. 35mm x 4mm
Hi Howard, I’ve been out of the game for a while and I have 2 VB commodores to restore. One I need as a daily and the other to get taken back to bare metal to restore first. I have a dilemma that while I’m doing up my wagon my sedan I have had some surface rust. I’d like to prevent it from degrading any further so before I start the wagon I was wondering if I can sand the surface rust back and treat it, but not as far as bare metal the whole thing until my wagon’s finished in around 12 months plus time. Can I paint over the acrylic? I’ve seen tinted white 2k primer done or a 2k clear done as a rat rod type finish. Could you help lead me in the right direction as there’s so many different opinions? Thanks heaps
If you plan on bare metal once you start it then I would put some industrial rust enamel over the patches and it will then come off with the stripper when you bare metal it. something like rust guard
appreciate you sharing at every step you take, also what you've done for the culture of street/custom cars over your life so far one question, i'm putting XYGT (all exterior) on bf xr8 floor (bumper to bumper and interior) do you have any suggestions re engineers/engineering ? (is this an appropriate question on this platform ?)
Hi mate. What are the laws on having a spray booth at home? I run a small restoration bussines from my home and I usually hire a booth or contract out the paint. If I can have a booth at home it would make life a lot easier

Thanks Slim, I have had the fortune to work with many talented people over the years. Now its my turn it give some back
Like the way you move old falcon metal those bars are real steel thick

Hey John I’m just making it up as I go.😂
Would love to see how a pro does it. Like I said I’m only getting it ready for filler.
Great mix of content, thanks Howard. Always look forward to when a new episode comes out.
Thanks Joe
awsome to see what goes into a top 60, early morning coffee and Astill update
That’s a very early coffee, cheers H
I love seeing this stuff. Takes me back to when you rolled out the Pioneer coupe, that was drool worthy.
Hi, this build has a really good feel about it, I think it will stack up.

Absolutely
Great tutorial on the bumper bar 🖒
Love the air compressor setup 👌
Ive never seen anything on refrigerated air before🖒
The lawn is looking great.
Thanks mick, the dryer works a treat.

No sure about the wax and grease. The metho and water is a good secondary step to eradicate any oils etc especially from your hands
Prepsol and wax and grease remover are essentially the same thing. Prepsol is a proprietary name given to what is wax and grease remover.
Had to laugh when you said about holding a hammer handle away from the head, my dad told me the same thing almost word for word back when I was a kid.
Yeah my dad had some good one liners

I’m learning something new every week with Howard. Great show as always. And I can’t wait to see the finish car.
Thanks Alan, It’s looking better all the time.
Another great episode Howard,, can't wait for the next.
The week comes around real quick when your making them.
HOWARD I so enjoy your video s my parents owned an xc just can't wait to see the completion. As for your lawn WOW just the best I o
Own a Toro lawnmaster cylinder mower from St Andrews in Scotland, love old school lawn mowing
Thanks David, there is something special about mowing with a reel mower.
Another outstanding episode, Thank you .
Thanks Matt
Great Video, always learning new things. Love your work. 👍👍
Thanks
Entertaining and informative as always mate, thank you and the best of luck with the upcoming new channel!
Thanks Brendan appreciate your support

Glad you enjoyed it
Great video again.
Just a suggestion on the rear speaker setup - as tweeters are more directional than woofers have you thought about incorporating them into a cover for the seat belt mounts so they point into the cabin rather than up at the rear windscreen?
Hi, I guess its always a battle of form over function. I think the bounce off the rear screen will be sufficient. Cheers H

The drifts are just mild steel. Good to hear you got some rain.
@@AstillDesign thanks 😊
Love your work....curious to know your metho and water mix for final cleaning. What's the mix ratio that you use?
As I said in the video I use a pre mixed product. PPG one choice SWX250. Label says 30-60% ethanol? Cheers H

Hi Howard top episode. Is there any reason you do not heat the bar when you are manipulating in?Cheers Paul
Was moving ok cold, if it wasn’t then that would be an option.
@@AstillDesign Cheers thanks for that.
Awesome work as always, bit curious about what's being done about the headlights and tail lights (Original or custom)?.
Cheers.
Grille and lights are stock H4’s and NOS spot lights. Taillight are stock lenses with FG sockets and globes
@@AstillDesign Beauty, Thanks
What a great set up you have sir, have you done any work on the FPV? Cheers mate.
which one are you talking about
@@AstillDesign good one 😂👍, must be hard.🤩

The best advice for engineers is to find one that likes what your doing before you start and work with them all through the build.
Thank you Howard
Looking forward to seeing your next session
You dont seem to use an etch primer. It's supposed to aid adhesion of the next coat. Any reason for that.
Epoxy is all that is required with this range of product from PPG
@@AstillDesign thanks

Yeh I am in a rural town also.
I am on a large 2 acre block
My bumper on the zh took 2 days and it’s still not straight

Do you remember Dulux now ppg wildlife super x
Sure do, had the diff in my van done in silver. Just about cut your finger on them flakes.
@@AstillDesign probably to much bring for today's tast although musel s could look cool 😎

Sorry dude but your storage tank should have air in from the bottom and out from the top
Ok, I’ll have a look tomorrow, it’s definitely out from the top with a drain in the bottom.
👍🏻🍺👏
😀👍
.... and you even said the C word 3 times in this episode, Commodore.
Next is the H word.
Come on, you can say it😁
