- On this episode we start garden maintenance by cleaning up foliage, deadheading, seed saving and weeding. A little maintenance goes a long way in late summer. We clean up borders on the rock garden, echinacea deadheading and weed management. It’s been a dry year for us in NY zone 5 so things are looking worse than normal for us in early September. Garden chores for fall maintenance and cleanup have begun!
You guys are so entertaining. I need to be outside doing my own weeding but can’t stop watching you weed cause I have so much fun listening to you guys. I learn something every few minutes but in the mean time I keep a smile on my face listening to you guys go back and forth. Your personalities seem so different and yet you both seem to complement each other.. at least from appearance on video. I personally love Brian’s narration and funny comments. Believe it or not.. after watching you I am motivated to go clean out my neglected beds. Love you guys 😂❤️
Very well said. . . they could start a reality TV show. hehe A true marriage for sure. . . . that's the real deal : )
@@GardenHappy Yeah! And her little Yankee accent is so cute! And I mean that in the sweetest of ways ❤️❤️❤️
OMGGGGGGG!!!! I Love you two!! 🌺 The banter between you is too kute!!! 🤣
I love you guys!! Married conversation 😆😆😆😁hubby’s comments and complaints 😅your clap back is HILARIOUS! It’s difficult to pull out plants that “look ok” WE KNOW😁😄😃😅
The 12 pointer handsome Hercules!!! 😂😂😂😂. I love it!!! With a tractor tramp stamp!!!!……. I’m dying🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Everything looks just beautiful as always 🌸
Love listening to the banter between you too. Garden cleanup made everything look nice.
Shelley, that clean up did make a big difference ! It's weird that I enjoy watching other gardeners doing their clean up !!! Enjoy all your videos ! Thank you Brian for filming !!
It’s so nice that you show the reality of gardening at this time of year. The typical garden doesn’t look so grand, but it can spruced up with some maintenance. Someone new to gardening may not realize that this normal and get discouraged. Thanks for sharing this.
Don't stop talking Brian. You are a great part of this channel. People enjoy you! You do a really good job at videography, hope she appreciates you instead of getting annoyed.
I totally agree. . . we grow to love the characters for sure.
“Can I get you some water.”😄😂
I love her sass so much!
So entertaining to watch you banter back n forth. 😀
Sitting here watching you and I should be out doing the same thing! But glad you posted a video…always look forward to them. We have definitely turned the corner!
I've been out in yard trimming pulling weeds etc. Came in and wala now after u told yr husband to relax and have a beer. I thought is she talking to me? I'm so happy I found your channel. You folks are fun! I learn everytime I watch your channel. Nice video. Watching from Iowa
Relax and have a beer. hahaha
It always feels so good pulling all the dead plants and cleaning up the beds for winter!!
Agreed!
You guys make me smile😁
I like to watch you do the actual maintenance.. strangely satisfying to see the before and afters....it didn't look like it needed much but wow when you were done!
Thank you for this episode it motivated me to go out and take care of mine! Great show!
A gardener NEVER has a day off right! Weekend??? What's a weekend??? hahaha I totally understand how you feel. Can't sleep at night unless the projects are tackled. Your garden is always beautiful no matter what season it is. A true labor of love! The dogs are hilarious!!! 💚💛🧡❤💜💙
Yes Shelly! I agree about salvia! I say it smells like cat urine! Your gardens still look gorgeous! My carding mill gives me so much trouble. Always riddled with Black spot. And I love it since kids gave it to me for mother's day a couple years ago. But it's struggled in my garden the whole time. Your husband cracks me up. "OK can't wait to help you" 🤣
You guys are the best. Always look forward to seeing your videos. Please do another detailed one in the fall, they are very helpful.
You two are hilarious! My hubby is sweet. I’m so sarcastic. We’ve had some rough times.😆
Yal crack me up. So glad I subscribed lol. Love watching this clean up video
Bryan what’s you favorite brouhaha? If I’m gonna have one on a hott summer day I’m gonna have “A Spotted Cow!” 🐄 and sit back and smell the Roses 🌹
Glad you figures out the ant problem
I need to use a tarp ! Good idea and Less work than trying to stuff weeds in a bag.
Omg yea! Especially when you have a ton of debris and foliage your taking out!
I agree with you. Wasn’t a great season but can’t win them all. Everything is turning so fast.
❤️🔥🌳🌻🌸LUV YOU GUYS ‼️🌺🌻🌳❤️🔥
This is the worst part of gardening, cleaning up in the Fall. If I had as many plants as you, I'd be overwhelmed. We are still in a heat wave, 90's with wicked humidity, so I still have a little time to start cleaning my gardens. Bryan, did you take notes so next year you can help with the clean-up? 🙂
My dog is going crazy looking for your dog LOL. I always enjoy you two. I'm watching between cutting my own flowers and cleaning up.
Haha! I know how that goes!
Learning so much from you guys
The butterfly bush with magenta blooms is it “Miss Molly”. Also how many years has it been in the ground? Does it come back fresh every year?
Miss Molly comes back every year. I live in 6b and in spring I cut it almost to the ground.
Yes! It’s the most reliable one I’ve had! I’ve had it for 3 years now, and last year I moved it from a shadier spot to the current garden it’s in and it came back gangbusters! I added a second one in the cottage garden last year!
Wonderful video
A water fall would look nice where those rocks are
I like the butterfly bush near your work area, what is the name of it? I wish my weeds pulled up as easily as yours! You guys are hilarious, I love your videos.
That’s the Miss Molly variety! I have two of them currently and they are reliable and prolific! I haven’t had great luck with other varieties over the years. 😊
I don't have the deer, but man the bunnies!!! My yard looks like a litter box and my new (in the spring) David Austin produced so much growth and they chewed it right down....Grrrrr!! I think this year, aside from the hostas I am leaving it all and will deal in the spring! Good luck with clean up 💪🌻
Yep!! They got my new buds on Carding Mill! Two out of the three bushes, they ate the buds right off! Ugh! If it’s not the beetles it’s the deer for me! I’m sure the bunnies are next!
@@GuidingGreenThumbs I hope no bunnies....deer is enough!!
Love your echinaceas. How do you keep bunnies out of your yard. They eat all mine. 😢
Dang Deer! My sentiments also!
I’ve been redoing my beds All summer after deer devoured roses, day Lily, phlox and now my heuchera🤯I’m loving annuals more also, will be adding more next spring 💐
Carpenter ants are just as bad as termites. They ate through the seal plate on the corner of my house. We had no idea until my husband completely remodeled one of the bathrooms. He took the old plaster walls down to the studs and it looked like something from a horror movie 🤣 they were going everywhere..and flying too. Weird thing is.. we never saw them in the house. Not really outside either just occasionally. So my humble advice would be to keep a eye out around your foundation for them.
Your gardens look amazing! You are too hard on yourself! Beautiful! How's the wall coming along?
I’d like to buy some of your coneflower seeds. I love all the colors you are growing. I don’t need many, my space is limited, but I thought you mentioned selling your seeds.
Timely video yet again. I ordered a couple late season blooming plants for pollinators and Dwarf Joe Pye weed was among them. So glad I saw yours so I could get an idea of size. Is that more than one plant?
That is just one plant! 3rd year leap!
@@GuidingGreenThumbs Wow!!
Oh my gosh talk about a stand up comedian act lol. My husband was laughing while listening to you as I'm watching you on my phone . lol Almost everything in August looks very sad because of no rain. I was cleaning up and weeding myself yesterday here in N.Y. And oh man got to love the grabgrass this time of the year. But like you said before, next year can't be worse!! Suppose to get some real rain tommorow on Monday and possibly tonight.
I am loving all this rain! Much needed. ❤️Time to plan for fall moving and grooving haha… what needs maintenance and what needs planting.
Magnifique bravo 😉 😉 😉 😉
Shelly, I love all of your cone flowers, and how good they still look. I live in coastal southeast Virginia zone 8a. After watching your channel, I decided to up my cone flower game, so this Spring I bought at least 20 (various) plants (scattered throughout my garden). Almost all of them have turned black, including the leaves, and look TERRIBLE). What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
Sorry to hear that! So frustrating! You’re in a pretty warm climate… whenever I’ve had the leaves turn black and the plant dies back… it’s generally lack of or too much water, they tend to like it in the dry side so if watering too often, crown/stem rot can happen easily causing the plant to just pull right out of the ground (at ground level) easily and it never establishes. They need great drainage too… so take a look at your soil. (Lack of water will show symptoms of crispy dried up wilted leaves and eventually death if it’s too far gone.)
Coneflowers also suffer from leaf spot, wilt and anthracnose. Take a minute to google them specifically in coneflowers… you might better be able to diagnose and remedy what happened with the ones that didn’t make it. Lastly, take a look at the Mt Cuba Research trials where they compares and listed all the best performing echinacea varieties. That study goes over lots of good growing information as well as common issues, remedies and will give you ideas on which coneflowers to choose for the best performance in your garden. 😊
@@GuidingGreenThumbs WOW...what a very detailed and well thought-out response. Thanks for all the research info, and so much for all the time. 🙏
My boyfriend gets mad about my plumber’s crack too when we are doing yard work together
😂 Well hopefully he’s not filming yours like mine does! 🤣
My husband too gets seriously upset when he comes home from work & sees it...lol...have to wear longer tops..
Do you have any poison ivy in your garden beds? I got a horrible case of it twice the season... it was a nightmare!
Sure do! And I’m highly allergic also so I stay way away! It’s mainly in the wooded part not the gardens luckily!
You 2 are funny
Can you use lysol spray instead of wipes?
Sure can!
I really enjoy you all’s videos, they are very entertaining! So sorry I couldn’t get back with you about Termites’s/Carpenter Ants. They wanted me to change my account from what I have to another and I couldn’t do that. But I would like to know how you found out that it was carpenter ants? I could help you if you give me your phone number in a email.
