- Happy Mother's Day! An early start to our day allowed a quick tour of the shade garden. Shade gardens can be fabulous when you use texture, foliage and mass plantings to create movement and color. See some great plants to use for dry shade, as well as how our shade garden is waking up for the spring!

My 13 year old stand of Hakonechloea grass had to go. It was invaded by underground shoots of nasty grass. It totally ruined the stand, and got worse over time. They are so pretty!

I planted Japanese painted Fern last year and noticed you have a couple growing outside of your garden bed at around 4:25 ... I hope you see this and let me know what is happening with those? Black mulch really makes the plants pop. I just planted a new hosta bed with black mulch and wow how beautiful, especially after I water.

Please take us on an extended tour of your property…looking at the back area of the smaller shade garden, it looks like you live on a cliff. Also the way back area where we could see the sky looks so interesting! My dream was to live in the country as I did when I was growing up, but sadly never happened.
