  • Sir Tony Blair has urged Labour to reset relations with the European Union and negotiate closer ties with the bloc, if they win the election.
    The former prime minister said it "would be wise" to reboot Britain's relationship with the EU, adding: "There are too many things that affect us that are going on in Europe."
    GB News hosts a panel with Mark Littlewood who is desperate for the U.K. to Diverge and ensure chaos.

      LMAO what a joke,
      Labour under Blair unleashed a massive wave of privatizations in the mid 90s (even your utilities, srsly wtf is wrong with u?)
      Labour, under Blair also pushed AND GOT a hike in tuition fees...
      (Blair is also a slimmey politician who pushed the lies of the bush adminnistration, knew they are lies but pushed for them anyway and got the UK involved, like a good little vassal that you are, to help the americans in Iraq and afghanistan, you ? looking for those very elusive WMDs).
      Labour right now is NOT in favour of rejoining the EU.. and even before the brexit referendum, they were also in favour of it, however they did not wish for a hard brexit like the torries.
      Labour is just a torry (light) party, and is almost as corrupt as them.
      The Labour party betrayed the working class time and time again, it isnt an opposition party, afterall, the railway is still in the hands of the private sector.
      Don't count on Labour to help you, they are merely slightly less corrupt than the torries, and traitors to their own class.

    Popular Conservatives? Isn't that a contradiction in terms? But then the guy thinks a the odd minor trade deal to sell cheese to countries where most of the population is lactose intolerant is more important than trade with the EU.
    Sooner the UK rejoins the better. No doubt the cost will be high, but worth paying for both social and economic reasons.

    • @dantownsend4246
      @dantownsend4246 Місяць тому

      Costs will also be high for the European Union, dismantling border posts, reassigning thousands of civil servants and reinstating regulations for starters. Also undoing the whole mess with roll over trade deals and CPTTP. Also removing those ridiculous MOUs with US states

    • @trident6547
      @trident6547 Місяць тому

      That lactose intolerance myth has been debunked ages ago. In 2021, the production volume of cheese in Japan reached around 168 thousand metric tons. Japan has an artisan cheeseproduction industry. EU exports some 120.000 tons of cheese to Japan yearly ( compare that to some 420 tons that UK exported there) but UK did not get any new quota from Japan after Brexit.
      Since it is the EU commission that negotiates all the trade deals on behalf of all the members in EU the quota is given to EU. When UK left EU all the parts of EU quotas it had with from EU agreements with various third countries went back to EU that split them up between the remaining members. One could call it a brexit benefit for EU.

    In Appendix 14-A of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the UK and the EU the two parties agreed equivalence specifically for the following agricultural/organic exports:
    Unprocessed plant products
    Live animals or unprocessed animal products
    Aquaculture products and seaweeds
    Processed agricultural products for use as food
    Processed agricultural products for use as feed
    Seeds and propagating material
    The principle of equivalence when it comes to SPS products requires both parties to trust that all such imports into both markets from any other trading partner are also subject to the same minimum standards, the same inspection criteria and the same potential penalties for deviation (a precursor to dumping). The moment the UK accepts imports from any other party which depart from these agreed standards, whether through specially agreed dispensation within a trade deal or through adherence to WTO basic principles, then the EU will invoke the anti-dumping protections also specified within the TCA to avoid that possibility and protect its market .
    Legally, it is not a question of whether the UK "wants to diverge" or not. It has signed up to an international treaty in which it has already committed to not doing so. Any such divergence, such as the importing of Australian or American HGP-treated beef, will be considered an immediate breach of the TCA, the immediate loss of equivalence (meaning instant tariffs on all UK exports in the categories above, potential trade embargoes, fines, and even a potential annulment of the TCA itself). The EU is already losing patience with the UK's post-Brexit inability as yet even to demonstrate to which standards it holds itself, let alone imports from other partners (a promise made in the Withdrawal Agreement which it is also currently in breach of).
    To listen to public discourse in the UK however one would be forgiven for thinking that either the UK has "forgotten" it made these commitments at all, or that it simply does not understand international law and what a treaty is meant to be for. However every planned "divergence", whether discussed as hypothetical options or intended deviations, is noted with especial interest in the EU in advance of the forthcoming review of the implementation of the TCA, at which point whoever is in power at that time will be told in no uncertain terms that the UK's traditional disdain for holding itself to its own binding promises any time subscription to the idea of international law simply does not suit it is no foundation for a relationship with a bloc built entirely on rules, laws and adherence to them.
    If you think things are bad now, wait until that bit of slurry hits the proverbial fan!

    What I understand is that British Farmers were broadly in favor of leaving the European Union and voted in that direction. Now they want some kind of isolationist protection from competition. In short, then, they were hoping for a captive audience amongst us Britons.
    The whole of the British countryside has been sodden wet through / saturated by the rain that has not stopped pouring for the last month and a half. Ergo, there shall be a shortage of British grown food on the grounds that the farmers are struggling against the "British" weather, and since Brexit imports of foodstuffs have become more expensive and we may look forward to a further increase in costs due to our weather.
    Another " Brexit Bonus :" here you are and here you shall stay and live out your retirement - because you are no longer free to retire to the southern European sunshine.

    I just do not understand why UK politicians are still terrified of upsetting a dwindling number of rabid Brexiteers. The UK economy is on its knees. UK cost of living is in crisis. Yet we are still hog-tied to hard brexit policies nobody voted for. The Referendum took us out of the EU, but nowhere did it mention leaving the Single Market or Customs Union. Doing so is the largest single factor damaging UK prosperity. Enough of this nonsense.

    Tony Blair is absolutely right, but we also have to acknowledge that the momentum has to come from the UK and accept that the EU is moving on reasonably well from Brexit. There won’t be the same degree of enthusiasm from Europe. A lot of EU businesses that have traded with us in the past under single market terms now trade with other firms in the trading bloc. We’re the losers. The UK has to accept we’re no longer the powerhouse of Europe - we’re ’Little Britain’ - Brexiters have delusions of grandeur.

    The UK will never become a member of the EU. And there's one simple reason; the EU want deviate from the principle that the UK's offshore bank industry must be regulated and taxed. So if the UK wants to rejoin the EU, then they will have to accept the EU's new tax legislation. And that legislation the Tories want accept - because the new tax legislation was the real reason for the brexit referendum. Try as he may, Cameron could convince the EU that the UK should be granted an exemption, from the EU's new tax legislation. That is the Gothic-knot between the EU and the UK today. And when Starmer takes the helm; it will remain so; he will make very little headway with the EU!! For the UK; the EU is a bridge too far.The EU are not going to let UK offshore banks, drain the EU for it's assets.

    • @trident6547
      @trident6547 Місяць тому +1

      Well that is just a hypotethical knot. UK is so far from complying with the criteria for joining anyway so a possible scenario where UK would be close to complying and get candidate status while it fixes some issues to start the accession process is at least a decade or 15 years away in the future.

      "hypotethical knot"
      Well, when considering, that offshore tax havens and the taxing thereof, was the vary crux of the reason why the Tory's wealthy, hoodwinking the electorate, into screwing themselves, then the regulation of the offshore banking industry, won't in any way, be acceptable to the Tories.
      There's a lot of animosity between the Tories and the EU. The primary reason for this, is that wealthy UK investors also have investments in the EU, but now however, tax must be paid at the source, of that EU investment-income; before and under the old EU lax legislation, UK investors were allowed to move their investment-dividends to offshore bake accounts and low taxation countries. That's now has all gone.
      I was this change in taxation, that Cameron tried to negotiate, an exemption from; he failed. And because he couldn't control the ultra right wealthy wing; of the Tory party, he then set brexit into motion .
      So the knot is still very real. And the next blow to the UK's wealthy and banking system; will be of € clearing to the EU's financial centres.
      So lets hope that one day, the UK will become a P/R-ented democracy. And to that ends, one shouldn't pin one's hopes, on either the Tories or Labour.

    You will be back in the EU sooner than Mr Mark thinks. Not tomorrow, not next year, but believe that in 10 years poverty will become greater and greater. It won't stop next year or the year after. You are simply running slower than the rest of the Western world and are falling further behind every year. And it will not be easy to convert the EU, but with certainties that will ensure that you do not hold strange referendums again next year. The euro, metric system and right-hand traffic are options. So let's assume in 10 years, due to that poverty, the UK is ready fob apply. It will need several years to meet the criteria, it will need even more years to get through the accession chapters, it needs to convince the EU members it is trustworthy etc. So add another 15 years, so we are looking at 25 years.
