More will follow, the industry stopped offering reasonable bicycles for the people and went in the direction of the automotive industry focusing on making overly expensive toys for the niche. They got what they deserve, I'll keep riding my vintage bikes.
Yea, it's really gotten stoopid, imho.
100 percent correct. adding unneccsary disc brakes to road bikes and taking their prices into the stratosphere was the last straw. consumerism at its worst. few will enter the road bike sport at these prices. a really short sided dumb greed move. the bikes of the early 2000's were the right mix of price and performance. i dont even go into bicycle dealers anymore. the pricing is offensive. in some cases you can buy a motorcycle for the same money. yet the bike dealer tries to tell you the bike is worth it. come on.
You are correct in the increasing complexity and high prices of today's bikes. It's much less expensive to get a few specialty tools and simply rebuild a used bike.
A lot of these bike videos seem to overlook the boom in electric bikes. Last Summer I think I saw as many Electric bikes on the local bike paths as conventional bikes. It just makes sense that as more of these are sold that the conventional sales would struggle. They do compete for the same market.
Ironically it's only company focusing on mtb. Wonder why 😂
Very good point.
Some people won't know what you're talking about.
I have a modern road bike and mountain bike with internal cable routing add disc brakes. I'm getting rid of both bike.
I purchased a Stumpjumper S S-Works M1 aluminum hardtail, I installed drop bars add ultegra road bike shifters. Cantilever brakes, open cable housing, traditional components allow you to use my traditional tool set to do anything on my bike. Maintenance and repair is super simple. Not so much on my modern road bike and mountain bike.
Yes disc brakes are much higher performance, however the knowledge an expertise required to maintain the hydraulic disc brakes is a lot more than I want to F with.
I run sealant in my tubes. On both my mountain bike and my road bike with tubeless I got tubeless sealant spread all over the components on the bike..... Pause on vacation and couldn't address the tubeless sealant on the bike until I got back home which turned out to be a nightmare. My disc calipers and discs and the rest of the bike were literally 6 to 8 hours addressing the mess.
People that want to ride their bike on the weekends many cannot afford the maintenance required on a modern mountain bike or road bike - the cost of prohibited and therefore bike shops gain clients, but they lose the clients when they can't afford to maintain their equipment
As an old school BMXer from the 1980s this is really sad to see. One of the coolest GT I owned was the Hans Rey team edition trials bike. That thing was so much fun!
Same here, I raced BMX in the early 80's and loved the way GT's looked but couldn't afford one at that time. However it is been of great influence of my love for GT mountainbikes and have owned quite a few 90's GT's.
I currently own 5 GT's, four if which are from the 90's. 1992 was the first year and my favourite for GT's and have owned more of that year than any other year.
I wasn’t sure how to “answer” this comment with a thumbs up or down. It totally sucks and I definitely agree with you.
I built my mountain bike with a 1996 GT Zaskar LE frame (polished aluminum). A fantastic frame that has served me well. The welds on this frame are a work of art.
Same! How many hours did you spend polishing yours?
I believe it took several hours to polish it but it’s been 15 years ago.
@@dad2ni I have 98 Zaskar that I converted to a drop 26er a few years ago. It’s also polished-I use Mother’s wheel and mag polish on it and my titanium GT edge. Works fantastic.
I have a black 99 Zaskar and a polished 98 Avalanche le ,95 timberline in team scream and a LTS4000. The polished avalanche le is the nicest looking i think and its the only year in 90's they made a 6061 Avalanche as the rest were 7005 .
Speaking as the average Joe, the triple triangle design is what made the GT bikes unique and distinctive. As bike design moved forward, that design element got more and more pushed aside until there was nothing left to distinguish GT bikes from the herd. Sad to see them go, but let's be honest: very, very few of us were buying their bikes new.
They had started to do some quite innovative gravel bikes at good pricing.
British brand Hetchins had a "Helenic" model of identical frame design in the 1960s. "Triple Triangle" wasn't unique and added nothing. It was simply a novelty gimmick.
I spent $7k on new GT bikes last year...
@@AlgorithmicApostasy Who needs like twenty bikes in one year?
@@davidpalk5010 it was only the GT eForce AMP+ and Current. I don't plan on buying another bike for the next decade, as I now have seven...
Ive got two 90s GT mtbs and one of those weird idrive XR frames, was literaly going to dump them last year to clear out the garage, I'll keep them safe.
As sad as it is that GT is going away, I'm kind of glad they won't be going the Schwinn and Mongoose route and selling the brand to a multi conglomerate who will just slap the GT logo on low quality department store bikes.
Pon owns Schwinn, Mongoose and Cannondale as well. Just google Pon holdings.
Like Dicks sporting goods? Low end GT..
My first MTB is a GT Avalanche wayback 2002-03. This is definitely a heartfelt of a sad news…
You nailed the sentiment exactly at the beginning. GT's been circling the drain for the past almost 25 years, so this wasn't a surprise, but it still is at the same time.
When I was 20 and working a 3rd shift job while going to school, I bought a late 80s GT BMX bike from a coworker as an impulse buy. I didn't ride it very long - replacing it with a Diamondback mountain bike, but it got me interested in bikes again, and I've owned at least one bike ever since.
I had my early 1990's GT Avalanche Mountain Bike Restored this past summer (2024). It was in my garage gathering dust & rust, & one day I decided to get it repaired & renewed. Now my GT bike looks amazing & rides even better than years ago. It's a keeper & I'm glad I didn't just throw it away.
I have a GT Avalanche about 15 years old very well built the gears are really smooth a touch heavy but that might be a sign of quality 🇬🇧
Rocky Mountain also just filed CCAA this week to restructure
Wow, I didn't know that. In motorsports, KTM, is undergoing financial restructuring. Strange to see these large, important companies falling on hard times.
As an owner of an ‘87 Pro Performer, this makes me kinda sad. GT BMX was definitely on top of the world in the’80s and ‘90s, then transitioned and absolutely killed it with some of their MTB designs.
Thanks for the memories, and rest in peace!
I’m obsessed with mid 90s bmx and mtbs. As far as I know across all bmx, mtb, and road bikes, the only bikes that appreciated in value above their original retail are the mid 90s Gary Ellis era GT Speed Series (pre-box) and Pro Series. ALL other bikes depreciate, even pre-Trek Kleins
Not unexpected. Not just this company but all the manufacturers are Overpriced, with built in obsolescence, a myriad of differing standards to contend with, over complication for maintenance and more and more targeting the niche end of the market. It’s more akin to the private/bis jet marketplace than buying a bike.
I've been a loyal GT customer since I was 12 yrs old in 1981, this is a sad time for us loyalists.
I've owned......
1985 GT Performer (2 both stolen)
1985 GT Pro Performer (stolen)
1992 GT Outpost
???? GT Pantera
1994 GT Zaskar (still have)
1995 GT Zaskar LE Competition Series (still have)
1996 GT Avalanche
1998 GT Zaskar (still have the frame)
2011 GT Avalanche Expert (still have)
2012 GT Zaskar Carbon 29r (sold it like a dummy)
2023 GT Zaskar LT Expert (just bought)
2024 GT Labomba (upgrading as I type)
and tons of Shimano XT, XTR vintage parts.
Loved my Zaskar and Xizang back in the day! They were dream bikes! Still have a set of GT hub/Mavic wheelset from my 97 Zaskar hanging on the wall.
Still hanging onto my '96 GT Avalanche LE. Beautiful frame
I have a GT eForce Current and AMP+ and i love them. Fantastic eMTBs!
Oh no! Thats so sad. I love my old GT:s. So cool design and everything. This is truly dark times.
Sad to hear, picked up a mint condition GT Ricochet last year through the family network, going to hang onto it now for sure, doesn't even need restoring it rides and looks great, they were one of the early pioneering brands of the industry, I always recall the Zaskar as I'm an older rider.
Hopefully the family can take over go high end. Ti company like Moots, top end steel too.
Such a long time coming. Last exciting G.T I rode was a pre release Sanction which I was loaned for the weekend..... a lot of people wanted to check that bike out on he trails, forward 13 years had a Xiang in a window for a year in 2023....no bites.
i've had a pro performer bmx in the mid 90s... then a Palomar in the early 2000... and later this year sold my avalanche elite 9er from 2022....I've always loved the brand, this are really sad news
Our company was hired to wash the windows at GT here in California. They moved to two more buildings. When we showed up as scheduled to the third building they moved to, they were shut down. No notice not to show up because they had closed up shop. This doesn’t surprise me.
I have a 2015 Zaskar GT. It's my trusty workhorse and has had almost no problems in all these years.
Well that is a pity. I'm so glad I've still got the Lightning that my wife bought me way back then
I just purchased a new GT for myself last week, a GT Grade Carbon, always wanted a GT growing up in my youth but ended up on a Stumpjumper. Always wanted a GT though so finally got one and here we are now. I wonder if they will be repositioned as the DTC brand under PON vs Santa Cruz/Cannondale.
Congratulations.
I purchased my Grade Ultegra back in 2016 and still regularly ride it.
When the Grade was released it scooped multiple awards. It was considered an endurance bike, but over time the Grade became a gravel bike.
@@dimimtb I have an 2016 alloy frame that I built up with 105. I was looking at getting a gen three alloy, but there’s no point. The wife walked by and looked down and said “why don’t you get that one?” To which I replied “because it’s $2465.” To which her response was “so? It’s the hobby you love and the brand you love, so this might be your last chance.”
Ordered the carbon pro on December 26 and it arrived on the 28th. The gen 3 stack and reach are insane though! I’m 6’”3 and ride an XL, but I obsessed whether or not I should get the large. I ended up with the XL and after some tweaking, got it just right. Might put on a 60mm stem though.
When I ordered mine, it was the only carbon bike left and was available in all sizes. The next day they were sold out.
I’ve put 22 miles on it and it’s absolutely amazing.
@@pastagreyhound Yup, I'm 5'10" and put a 55mm stem on it but have only ridden it on a trainer so will settle on something in that range once I get it outside. I expect it to be stable given the length of the bike and am used to short stems from my current MTB. Looking forward to some summer riding on it in-between my MTBing.
Growing up in the 80s, I have only the fondest memories of the brand and the bikes. Everything else around at the time was compared to them as THE standard. So this is really sad news. I did buy a Zaskar a few years ago which didn't seem worthy of the name to be brutally honest (mainly due to the parts spec), but perhaps that's more a reflection of the industry in general, than GT. In any case, hate to see them go. Tough times we're living in. But the memories will live on!
I bought my rts3 new in 1995 and I still have it. I guess I'll still keep it.
Parabéns pelo trabalho! Sou brasileiro e tenho uma GT Corrado com grupo fechado XTR e cockpit Ritchey.
It isn’t just prices. These days there are too many brands out there, fighting for too few customers.
I was a pro X-country racer back in the mid 90's.. life and school took over and i got out of it until I had kids , in the early 20teens I was pricing out a MTB for my son ands was shocked at how much had changed, 26" wheels nah bro, thats not even old school thats vintage, ok fine, tech advanced while I was away, but what really had me on the floor was the pricing. The introduction of cheap aerospace surplus CNC was suppose to drop prices, but a good MTB, was so far beyond rational pricing now. As soon as my son found out the price of a good MTB he said forget it. Like Skiing, the MTB world has priced it's self into extinction. gone are the days when $600 would buy a bike you could actually race or learn how tow to fast single track. now $600 won't even buy you a basic cromo frame. I am not surprised GT is out of business, I am surprised so many other companies have survived.
Back in the day you could find bike for anyones pocket but now people want to spend 15K or 20K for new road or mtb bike here in Australia at least! Its becoming a status instead of a passion😢
$600 in 1995 = $1204 today due to inflation. That's something to keep in mind.
I had a GT Dyno VFR back in the late 90s. Loved that bike... until it got stolen off my back porch in 2004.
I've got a frw lancer 26" with a frame in aluminium scadium mtb xc world champion in the 2000 ish soo light and beautiful..what are your thoughts about that?
I still remember getting into bicycles in the early 2000s. I saw GT and felt their bikes were falling behind and just not that great. When you could see Trek, Cannondale, Santa Cruz and Specialized innovate and have great lineups GT just felt kind of uninspiring and not aspirational. I saw plenty of old GT Zaskar and LTS and thought those were neat but the stuff on offer since just hasn’t been great :/
Greg Hill Team GT BMX #3 was my first exposure to GT Bikes.
part me is like, nah that's not going to happen, GT is to big of a brand and too recognizable to go out of business. Then I look at the automotive industry and think about all the HUGE brands that are gone like Pontiac, Chrysler, Saturn etc.
2:43 ❤
That why I see Sur Ron's, talaria' shredding mtb trails 👍
I felt like such a baller back in the day on my STS. Such a beautiful thing!
I also have a Grade, a game changing gravel bike that defined the whole category.
some of my favorite bikes have been GT's. i had 3 STS, avalanche and tempest. that tempest was indestructible.
Triple triangle is too iconic to die
...but copied fom Hetchins. Not original. Added nothing but unnecessary weight. Plain silly.
@@davidpalk5010 Whimsy is its own reward
@@davidpalk5010 yep, triple triangle just made the rear end heavier and stiffer for no reason . After owning one, I yearned for a non triple triangle design.
@@SurpriseMeJT I'm surprised. Could you actually feel a difference? My beef with it is that it doesn't work with a sloping top tube, especially in smaller sizes. GT, like Cannondale and others, stuck with horizonontal top tube and short head tube for way too long. I remember Zaskars fitted with very long 45 degree stems for this reason. Awful! Kona led the way with geometry, which is why old steel Kona XC frames have such a strong following today. Long, sloping top tube with longish head tube - so that a shorter, flatter stem could be used. Kona's geo was way ahead of the others. Nobody will miss GT. Plenty of used GT frames around if anyone really wants one.
@ yeah I could definitely feel the difference when I jumped on a Trek 930 or or something similar. That extra metal really did nothing. Agree about Kona geometry. I have a VooDoo HooDoo (Joe Murray design) and the geometry really is the best of the era for XC riding.
First, it was Nukeproof and Vitus, and now it's GT. The news isn't great for the mtb community, I only wonder if more brands could suffer the same fate in the future. 😢
Next is trek and Cannondale then specialized polygon might survive though
Not so Nukeproof then I guess
Rocky Mountain also announced they are entering bankruptcy protection to restructure the business. Not sure exactly what that will mean for RM’s future, but the North Shore team, which was the core of their development, is apparently done according to the local rumour mill.
@@gulfcitynd 1000% Trek is NOT NEXT. They have cut expenses and have the financial backing to stay around. They also have a solid dealer network and a real plan for the future.
Everyone overpriced their product because of corporate greed
Sad! I had two GT bikes back in the 90s.
GTs are not easily found in my neck of the woods. I have been searching for a black with purple accents GT Karakoram for a few years with no luck. Then I pulled up to my shop one day and someone had dropped off a truckload of bikes; several old Diamondbacks, Treks, Schwins, and among them was a really nice GT Karakoram that just happened to be black with purple accents. As I was standing there trying to figure out where they could've come from, one of my riding buddies texts me, asking if I found the bikes that he had dropped off??? Turns out that he decided to clean out his bike shed and had that GT stashed in his shed the whole time that I was searching for one!
I got a GT Verb 2016. It was their buget friendly full suspension bike for $1000. I thought they had a winner. It was discontinued after 2 years.
Unfortunately PON holdings put no effort into GT. They had great products as recently as 8 to 10 years ago. But they had it in autopilot for too long. There was some push with retro BMX and BMX cruisers that seemed to be doing well. Unfortunately the bike crash of 2024 will probably take a few more. We lost Nukeproof, Vitus, Element, Chain Reaction, Pros Closet, and more. I also know Trek had to make some major pivots. Kona got saved fortunately.
I still ride GT. I hope Martin or Gary's son in law will buy the name and turn it into a boutique brand
Reminds me of being young I was obsessed with the gts I had 3 in a row than went to powerlite I did try an entry level mtb from gt when I got back into riding like 7 or so years ago. Gt was my jam I remember renting rad from the video tape store every weekend and watching it than suiting all up and hoping on my interceptor riding around the yard lol. Than started racing. Huge part of my childhood.
According to Phil from skills with Phil, Pon declined to sell the brand to the guy currently running it.
I still have my yellow Mach1 from 1993 w/owners manual...
Herd this a week ago sad I have GT Aggressor Pro and a GT 3.0 love Gt
My dad, brother, and I purchased the McGrath BMX bike the week it was released, I think MSRP was $350. We might look to sell soon. It's been in a basement- 0 miles.
Pon group is akin to Stellantis, lots of "brands" getting repackaged.
The people who are invested in the brand get sidelined and the marketing department is the centre of everything... still have my XIZANG!
Being from Wisconsin, I've mostly been a Trek and Gary Fisher rider. I have liked the few GTs I've tried though.
same thing has been happening in the home stereo market and is ongoing. companies no longer able to stay in business.
I have a 2016 GT Palomar, I would love to find a 2000s cro mo
The sad truth of GT Bikes is that is had already been bought and sold nearly half a dozen times since the late 1990s. Each acquisition resulted in further dilution of the brand...along with Schwinn and Mongoose former competing American-made brands owned by the same holding company. Yes, the situation is very sad, but it seems to be a repeating cycle. Perhaps a complete overhaul of company ownership, management, and sales principles is called for...unless it's too late already.
Sad - my winter bike is an old GT Avalanche :( So many GT bikes out in the world - they'll be around for decades to come.
I was wondering why there all sold out on website lol
To be fair they struggled for so long. But still sad to them finally go.
for someone whose first mtb build was a GT, the news felt unreal at first. and now everybody is talking about it, it's starting to sink in. and very sad.
My first build was a GT Karakoram. Got the frame for $75.
Tried to put the bottom bracket in backwards and got it stuck. Bike shop guy wasn't very happy. Got it installed correctly for me.
Absolutely gutted, they are one of the most important and innovative companies in the history of cycling.
This makes me horribly sad because from where I'm at now an entry level gt bmx would be a major step up from what i have now
GT was it “in my day”
No more Triple Triangle!
As a current GT owner this is sad news it's cliche to say this but they really are an iconic brand.
Greg LeMond telling the story of how Lance Armstrong campaigned to kill the Lemond brand was wild.
I am selling GT MTB's in my bikeshop, they look like a Gt but they have a cheap quality, they cost between 400 and 900€.
My mint iDrive lives on.
I have two GT bikes, a 2001 Aggressor with Aluminum frame and a 1992 Timberline from CroMo, both restored but with their original paint, I wouldn't get rid of them. I also have a Kona Rove which is the one I usually use on my long rides.
No, GT Bicycles is not closing down, but it is pausing new product releases and laying off staff:
Explanation
In December 2024, GT Bicycles announced that it would pause new product releases and lay off staff to streamline operations and focus on its core strengths. The brand will continue to sell bikes from its existing inventory, and Cycling Sports Group will handle warranty and customer service.
Background
GT Bicycles separated from Cycling Sports Group in 2022 and became a stand-alone brand owned by Pon Holdings. The brand moved its headquarters from Wilton, Connecticut to Aliso Viejo, California, near its original Southern California headquarters. However, the brand has faced challenges this year, including layoffs and deep discounts on current products.
Future
GT Bicycles says that it remains a brand with strong potential and that this decision is intended to lay a solid foundation for its next chapter.
Their 90s track bikes were gorgeous
The GT show flatland bike was one of the best pro level completes of all time
Private Equity SUCKS.
As with Kona, the issue with GT is that seems to have become a nostalgia brand. People remember loving and riding them in the 90s, and then stopped buying them in recent years. Nostalgia alone won't keep the company alive unfortunately.
It would have helped if they produced more of the retro bikes , every time they released a retro 20’ they sold out
Time to go ebaying for gt.
Sad. My most fun bike is gt peace 9er. Cost me little. Makes me smile lots.
I wonder if they are liquidating backstock?
Bikes are at 50% off on their website.
I picked up a Labomba for $350!
You can get BMX parts pretty cheap from GT right now and they'll even ship for free.
Very sad. I have a GT zaskar in my collection and my brother had a GT in.the 90s.
Sad- I feel like someone could take that brand and focus in on 3 classic BMX models and a few MTB’s and make a go of it successfully. This could be a textbook case of how to destroy the value of a brand
Sucks. GT fanboy for years. Have a freestyle and also a 2010 Avalanche 1.0 disc. Have loved GT Bicycles for years, sucked also when they sold out, but still a fan. Hans Rey!!!! Always digged that the year of my birth was the same as the year of GT. 😆
GT went bankrupt in 2001, so this is not their first rodeo. Somebody will buy the rights to GT.
💔What a pity ...l had a GT Talera 95´.beautiful blue, ...not very soft , but a bike for encarnations.....so sorry RIP
The entire bike industry is downsizing right now and then they need to "right size" their projections to get their inventory dialed.
What the industry needs to do is stop trying to pull more high end enthusiasts in to buy $5000+ bikes and go back to creating cycling as a way of family fun, healthy lifestyle, and commuting. Yes, I know those bikes don't have the high gross profit $ of a high end bike, but we need to grow the pie and there's a ton of opportunity there.
Wasnt the current iteration of GT a completely different company than the brand that produced 90s icons like Zaskar and STS
The PON group tried their best… but not really investing in the brand. I wonder why they did not try to sell it out earlier, although it might be that no one would be interested…
The real GT died over 30 years ago when Mitt Romney vultured it out needlessly, despite being profitable at the time. This news about GT this past month is sad mostly because it shows us how distressed the bike industry is right now. Just another canary in the coalmine
This sucks, I had a couple of GT BMX bikes in the early 80s (pre pegs), and my 1st real road bike was a GT (triple triangle) Force. I kept it for from '95 until just last year when i sold my house and reluctantly sold it due to downsizing. GT will be missed, although the GT I feel in love with, really disappeared years ago, at least quality & innovation wise.
As a hardcore GT guy, this is not surprising news-but nevertheless sad. I only ride GT bikes and currently have 12 plus one Gary/Craig Turner hand built BMX in my stable. Yes, Gary and His son have been building frames in the USA for a few years now-google gt1972. I sold half my stable during Covid, including one of Hans “No Way” Rey’s personal bespoked carbon road bikes and a Gold carbon Zaskar that was one of ten in the world. I currently own a Xizang, two Edge Ti road bikes-one a 1996 serial #0002, which was most likely Frankie Andreu’s 1996 Olympic training frame set. The other is the 2014 reissue. Also have a 1998 Zaskar, a Reynolds steel Course road bike and a 1989 Tange steel Avalanche. I’m still looking for a Columbus steel Edge road frame from the mid 90’s in a size 58 and an XL Psyclone frame. Tempted to grab another GT Grade gravel bike because prices are good right now.
How sad they had such great bikes and don't get enough cred
Hope they can save gt be very sad to see another great bike brand go out of business 😢
Somebody will buy the brand name at a deep discount. Maybe it will be the new Walmart bike.
Sad news.
I’ll never sell my Grade,
It sucks to have watched GT die twice now. I hope some of these legacy brands rise from the ashes, but don't hold much hope.
Nossa
Triste notícia 😢
It is sad news, but not surprising. Anyone who has a mint condition 80's GT Pro Performer, or Pro Freestyle are now sitting on a retirement investment, congrats. In having said that I believe that as we 70's and 80's kids start( God Forbid ) dying off Brands like GT, MONGOOSE, HARO, REDLINE will only be pages in the history books. It is we kids of the 70's and 80's who are now old enough to be able to buy our dream bikes of that era who are keeping the prices high.
I don't think it's done, they will come back with better bikes, not the generic stuff they sold lately ... that's my hopes for the brand .
Sadly trek qnd cannondale might be next
Trek is currently the big player. Trek is building corporate stores, and "convincing" independent retailers to only carry Trek brand...
