  • Update: Before you defend men waxing women, let me say I get that idea. To each their own. I personally wouldn't be cool with it is all. However, this situation was a guy working out of hair salon wearing street clothes and he took 1 hour to do a Brazilian! He was not a legit licensed professional. ie some creepy guy trying to get his kicks.
This is a perfect example of why cheapest is not the best option, especially in beauty services! A new client came to me after a horrible experience from purchasing a Groupon Brazilian Waxing Service. I was in such shock that I just had to share her story!

I do apologize but I have to speak my mind on this video. I normally love your videos, but this one upset me a bit. I follow you because I am an esthetician and I love your advice. This video upset me because I''m just starting out and thinking of doing groupons because I need more clients and regular advertising isn't working yet and I don't want to fall out of practice. I'm also running specials all the time just so I can afford rent.. This is pretty discouraging, especially when it seems like starting out, I have to run lower prices to get myself booked. Also, I've got my time down to 30min but I've also had a brazilian take me 2 hours before, although this was very early in my career it was after being out of school, and once in a while it takes me 45 minutes-1hr sometimes if the hair is being tricky. The lady didn't know if he was new or not, he could have been nervous. While I understand that long of a wax is uncomfortable, understandably so, it can be discouraging to beginners to speak of slow waxes like it means the job isn't done well. To that matter, it's discouraging to say people shouldn't book if a waxer is a beginner. We all start somewhere and it is ok to book with a beginner at a cheap rate unless they are doing very dangerous things in which case they shouldn't be licensed. You can be great at waxing but still be slow at it for various reasons. Also, I understand it can be uncomfortable to be waxed by a male, but I also believe that males should feel welcome in this career. I think this woman had valid reasons to be disappointed, but I think it was unnecessary to make a video on this particular story because its discouraging to waxers who I thought you wanted to encourage. I also see nothing wrong, because the guy was just trying to do his job and it doesn''t sound like he did anything inappropriate, and then you furthered that by titling the video with "Creepy" in the title. That is not right when the only thing he's guilty of is being a male waxer. I just wish this video wasn't discouraging to some.

This is so weird. I don't think "a lot of women" would allow this to happen. I feel sorry for the lady but we need to speak up. If we're not comfy yes Speak up/stop it.

Unfortunately when you’re in a situation like this and in shock you don’t have all your faculties about you and sometimes you lose your ability to speak up for yourself. Because you just are trying to come up and get out of the situation is safely and quickly as you can

I personally would not let a male waxer wax my bits. Everything else yes, legs, underarms, lip area but not my bits. My opinion. If you want to call it sexist fine, don’t care. People really seem to forget that area is called an intimate area for a reason. If it’s comfortable for you either way then do that. If it’s not then don’t.

I was injured cutting a tree. Breaking 28 bones, "A life time of pain"! I was naked for 3 weeks. The ladies were so nice and respectful.💓💓 All your bashfulness goes away. But as a man I couldn't let a man wax me just to weird.

I got a Brazilian by a female waxer and it took over and hour and half. I also thought that was strange at the time because I saw the same waxer before and it didn’t take that long

Men have it done by women. As long as the person is licensed we live in a equal world that all woman have fought for, but not equal now for men.

A hour and half is way too long. Also you should always trust your gut feeling and not do something you aren’t comfortable with. Also that fact that this specific client didn’t remember the salon or the name of it says a lot. It’s possible that she miss read the Groupon

You know sexism is fine as long as done by women. Should a man refuse a female server, he would be vilified. Fine to focus on expertise.

Groupon is the shit!!! I use it weekly... and they are so many great services on there with great prices... so as someone who doesn't use groupon.. she shouldn't be criticizing it like that.. ppl have crazy stories about everything! especially waxing, hair, nails, facials, etc..

I'm not saying males cannot be waxer's. But personally yes it would make me uncomfortable to purchase a service (especially one that is so intimate) and be completely unaware that the person performing it is a male. Even with booking a massage, they ask if you prefer male or female. They ASK. Not saying there's anything wrong with it, but they need to inform the customer before the service. I did not like how the groupon said nothing about it being a male since yes that would make many women uncomfortable. Not to mention, she could tell he didn't know what he was doing. An hour for a Brazilian? Come on. Total scam and unprofessional. But that's just my opinion.

Kristen has the right to express what her boundaries are with respect to being waxed. She is expressing the opinion of most women. She never said men should not be allowed to be waxers.
It's creepy to complain about this being unfair. Most male waxers would be upfront about this in order for clients to be able to make a decision about their own comfort levels.
Also, an hour is way too long. What was he doing ??
EWC does Brazilians in 15 min

love all your videos but highly disagree with this one. My gynecologist is a straight male, so personally the only thing i care about is professionalism. If you think the waxing profession should be strictly for females - that's pure sexism. If you're professional and knowledgeable then why not make a living by removing hair?

I'm not saying males cannot be waxer's or gynecologist's. But personally yes it would make me uncomfortable to purchase a service (especially one that is so intimate) and be completely unaware that the person performing it is a male. When you made the appt with the gyno, did you not know he was male? Or did you walk in to the appt knowing who the doctor was? Even with booking a massage, they ask if you prefer male or female. They ASK. Not saying there's anything wrong with it, but they need to inform the customer before the service. @@hissnkittenwaxing You're response furthers what I said in my own comment just now. It sounds very much like he is somewhat new, and not all of us are fast in the beginning. You also mentioned he may not be licensed which is an unfair statement as well, as she gave you no indication of that unless you forgot to mention something. If you believe that being new and slow=unprofessional then I think you shouldn't be in the field of trying to help new estheticians because this is not helpful to us. Like I said in my other comment, I have taken 2 hours before! And it was because I was newer and a little nervous, and it was her first time so I thought I was helping by taking my time. It wasn't until I got my own first brazilian that I realized its best to get them done as fast as possible and I ended up faster. The groupon may have not mentioned it because maybe there are more than 1 waxers. I just think you have a platform and have great influence and it can be devastating to some who are sensitive and typically seek you for guidance.

    • @sarahoc5952

Estheticians and waxers have historically been female. There is the presumption of the kind of safety that is created in an all female environment. Males can be waxers but they should be upfront about it

Hey Kristen, I've watched most of your videos and must say you offer plenty lot of good information and funny stories as well.
However, I have to say that this video made me quite uncomfortable. You’re saying how you’d be uncomfortable with a male esthetician, but even more so- a straight male esthetician.
I have been waxing myself and getting waxed by salons for 6 years now. I have never felt uncomfortable with a woman, or man waxing me. Let alone their orientation. Even while I was getting a “bro zillian” wax and hearing about how her daughter is about my age.

Thanks for that copy- paste response (you used this exact one for Tvaleriya). It blows my mind how you can not see the sexism you are spewing out right now. It does not matter what gender, nor orientation, is performing your service. You have completely lost my respect.
I hope you never have to deal with the "horrors" of a straight, male esthetician.

I personally would not feel comfortable with getting my Brazilian waxed by a male. After that Groupon didn't specify that, or when she arrived and was pulled into a weird room, and it took him over an hour, that definitely was not cool. But that's just my opinion. I have nothing against male doctors, but this situation made me feel EXTREMELY uncomfortable.

HK Wax Center - Austin Arbor I suppose it depends how you feel but as a professional myself I’d feel hypocritical waxing males but not trusting a professional male waxer. As long as they remain so it’s fine in my opinion.
What about a gay female waxer? Over an hour is a long time but I’m guessing if it’s a groupon they’re newish and building up speed etc. It’s hard to judge really. But if it makes you uncomfortable it makes you uncomfortable
