What I do Dan is get a couple of tins of beans and sausage. From either Lidl or Aldi for around 59p each. Simply put them in the vacuum bags that you can extract most the air out. Seal them and just boil them the same way. Far nicer you can pimp them up with other stuff you like such as grated cheese 🧀 etc. So for ×2 thins £1.18p bit of cheese you've got a lot nicer meal with more beans etc at a fraction of the cost. This can of course be done with other meals. Save a fortune with just a little prior effort 👌🏽

@SonofChurchill They sure are pal. I refuse to buy them. The only time I will is a treat but even then I only buy a pudding not a meal. But basically anything these companies sell we can make them are selves in the vacuum bags 👌🏽

Newbie to wild camping here….if I was to vacuum pack my own meals, rather than using Wayfarers, I’m presuming they wouldn’t be safe after a few days without refrigeration particularly if they contained meat. Or would they? Any advice welcomed 🙂

Very true, I keep MRE ration packs at home and in the boot of the car, but I also keep the tinned stuff. if you don’t have to carry the weight why not just keep the tinned stuff 🤔.
My grandparent went through 2 world wars, one of my biggest memories as a kid was looking into their larder to see rows and rows of tinned stuff on the shelves.

A lot of people are saying heat a tin directly up. However, (most) tins in the uk have a liner in to help keep the food safe. Exposing the tin to heat can leach the liner into your food.

You do know that any food in a tin can is cooked once inside the tin for a couple of hours then let to cool before being labelled ? Before microwaves in the 70's some tinned foods had instructions for heating in the tin.

BEANS AND SAUSAGE: a tasty and flavorful dish, if properly sauced and seasoned. THAT is why it is so popular. In this format: you could have done a comparison with the two-pound cheaper product. At the end of a long day's hike, a hot and tasty meal that is also filling always revives MY spirits.

I always get the Aldi tinned version, take some bread or a couple of rolls and it's more than enough after a good hike. I don't mind paying a fair price for stuff but I refuse to be ripped off and there's a tinned version of most of those Wayfarer meals at a fraction of the cost.
Think about it,. buy the tinned version instead, put the price difference in a jar and after a year or so you'll have enough to treat yourself to a nice piece of hiking or camping gear.

Get 3 cans of Branston Beans and sausages for the same price. The additional weight saving of 60 grams for the steel can over the retort pouch just isn't worth the £3 additional cost unless in high mountaineering expeditions (freeze dried would be more suitable) or for Combat Rations (allows a soldier to carry an additional 5 - 5.56 NATO rounds per empty can weight) rather than sitting in some nearby woods to munch away. British Army Sausage Casserole for £3 is much better than Beans and Sausages.

some people here are totally missing the point of these "pouched" meals, they are designed for hikers/backpackers on multi day trips where food may not be available, so after a long day hiking/bike packing after setting up camp in middle of nowhere, there is nothing better than a hot meal, these are perfect as they are light in weight & small compared to a tin of beans/sausage! If your in a camper van or such or camping where your in distance of a shop, there would be zero reason to use these types of meals!

I don't think it matters where or when people eat the meals mate. Some people just get them to eat normal camping and I know the fire Brigade buy them as fast meals when on call out...

@@englishwoodsman yup thats fine, but when bike packing these meals are great. My reply was to those saying that these are a waste of money, or buy a tin of beans/sausage instead its cheaper! When doing multiday trips Hiking/Biking these are brilliant, yup they are fairly expansive for what you get, but these are among the cheaper of the brands (under £7 for 2 meals if you shop around), some brands are £10 upwards for 1 meal! The only thing better than these when doing multiday trips is dried food packs as they are lighter in weight, but they are not as nice tasting.

To be honest Dan I think they are way over priced for what they are, yeah some are quite nice and you don’t have to wash a dish but give me a tin of beans and sausage heat in the tin then into your rubbish bag to bin when you get home works for me take care mate and all the best 👍👌❤️

Get yourself some of walls finest sausages put in a pan and tip a tin of beans (put in a zip lock bag) in with them. Job done. Tastes better and you are full afterwards. Boil up water in the pan to clean it out easily.

£4.50 is a bit steep, but you are paying for the convenience. I'm lucky with being a car camper, I can put up with the extra weight of the tinned variety. Add a couple of slices of crusty bread and it the food of kings 😁

I have a problem with the price of those meals, I'd rather get a dehydrator and a vac packer so I can make my own meals. At least I'll know what goes into the meal.

In my opinion If you are prepared to pay for these meals then it is your choice , but i'd rather pick up a tin from Aldi/ Lidl's.

Empty a tin of the cheap stuff into your sealable amazon bags, then add some other ingredients as desired: chopped onions, garlic a bit of ginger etc.

Hard to justify the cost against other options but no cooking no dishes just simply boiling water has something going for it

Personally think all meals in this style are over priced. In saying that I do enjoy this particular brand and this particular meal. Yes over priced but good quality and easy to use when on the hill or away for the day.

I do love your work, but you could just be disappointed in your shed
Personally, I feel these are a bit of a rob.But I do mostly use sachet type food. I have way too much 3 in 1 coffee, and the pasta meals are filling but full of Es I freeze mince in a tube shape and keep it in an insulated flask I found out vacuum flasks don't do rucksacks
